We have been running the competition to find the BBC Young Musician for more than 40 years.
We expect over 450 young musicians to enter the competition.
Everyone who applies who is eligible will perform at Regional Auditions.
We will then choose about 125 young musicians to perform at the Category Auditions.

BBC Young Musician 2020
There are 5 Categories:
• Strings
• Percussion
• Woodwind
• Brass
• Keyboard
Five performers from each category will go through to the Category Finals which will be filmed so it can be broadcast on BBC 4.
The winner of each Category Final will go through to the Semi-Final which will be filmed so it can be broadcast on BBC 4.
From the Semi-Final 3 young musicians will be asked to play in the Grand Final where the winner will be chosen.

You must:
• Be Grade 8 standard on your instrument
• Be age 18 or under on 1st January 2020
• Live in the UK
The competition is open to all people who are eligible. We welcome applications from Deaf and Disabled musicians.

Who can enter the competition?
You will be asked to play at one of the Regional Auditions.
They take place in September and October 2019.
They are in Cardiff, Manchester, Glasgow and London.
You can choose what to play.
It should not last more than 10 minutes.
You can bring someone to accompany you. We will provide a piano.
You need to give us 3 copies of the all the music you are going to play.
You will be told the result of the Regional Audition on Monday 28 October 2019.

Regional Auditions
About 125 people will be chosen to play at the Category Auditions.
We will let you know the dates and where the Category Auditions will take place. They will be in November and December 2019.
You can choose what to play.
It should not last more than 12 minutes.
You can bring someone to accompany you.
We will provide a piano.
You need to give us 4 copies of all the music you are going to play.
We will choose 5 people from each category to play at the Category Finals.
You will be told the result of the Regional Auditions on Monday 16 December 2019.

Category Auditions
You will play before a panel of judges and an audience.
You will be filmed for television.
You can choose what to play.
It should not last more than 16 minutes.
We will provide a piano. If you want we will provide a harpsichord.
You can bring your own person to accompany you, or you can ask the BBC to provide someone.
The winner from each Category Final will get £1000, a trophy and a place in the BBC Young Musician Semi-Final.
The results will be announced on the night.

Category Finals
The Semi-Final will take place in March 2020.
You will play before a panel of judges and an audience.
You will be filmed for television.
You can choose what to play. You can play the same as you played in the Category Final if you want.
It should not last more than 16 minutes.
We will provide a piano. If you want we will provide a harpsichord.
You can bring your own person to accompany you, or you can ask the BBC to provide someone.

Semi-Final
Three performers will go through to the BBC Young Musician 2020 Grand Final.
The results will be announced on the night.

The Grand Final will take place on 10 May 2020.
You will play before a panel of judges and an audience.
You will be filmed for television.
You will also have to come along for rehearsals.

BBC Young Musician Grand Final
You can choose what music to play but it must be written for a solo instrument and orchestra.
This must last between 15 and 30 minutes. You will perform this piece with a professional symphony orchestra.
The winner will be called BBC Young Musician 2020, and given £3,000 and a trophy.
All three finalists will also get help and support for 2 years from the Young Classical Artist Trust (YCAT).

• Either: • Provide a copy of your Grade 8
certificate or
• Performer’s Diploma or
• Get your teacher to sign that you are Grade 8 standard
• Tell us what music you want to play at the Regional Auditions and the Category Auditions

How to enter
You must play an instrument that has a concerto or other orchestral work written for it.
You have to provide your own instrument unless you play the piano, organ or harpsichord.
Percussionists should include tuned and non-tuned percussion in their performance.
Percussionists can bring up to two accompanists.
The BBC will provide a range of professional percussion instruments.

There will be television cameras at all stages of the competition.
You may be interviewed and recorded.
Recordings of your interviews and performance may be used on radio, television and online.
Music
You can play from memory or from music at any stage.
You should include details of the music you want to play in the application form.
If you want to change the music you are going to play you must tell us by:
• Regional Auditions: 13 September 2019
• Category Auditions: 15 November 2019

An accompanist plays with you when you perform. Usually on the piano.
For the Regional and Category Auditions you have to pay for your own accompanist.
For the Category Finals and Semi-Final you can have an official BBC accompanist if you want.
