Stewardship

Next week, the second collection will be for the Church in Latin America. For many in Latin America and Caribbean, rural terrain and a lack of ministers are obstacles to practicing their faith. Your support to the collection provides lay leadership training, catechesis, priestly and religious formation, as well as other programs to help share our faith with those who long to hear the Good News of Christ. From Our Pastor

“All life has inestimable value even the weakest and most vulnerable, the sick, the old, the unborn and the poor, are masterpieces of God’s creation, made in his own image, destined to live forever, and deserving of the utmost reverence and respect.” — Pope Francis

This weekend the world’s attention is cast upon our nation’s capital where thousands gather to peacefully march in defense of life. This defense does not end at the birth of a child, for the Church has for centuries championed the sanctity of life from its beginning to its natural, and dignified, end.

So when we march, we march not only for a child’s right to life, we march for that child to live in a society where it is cared for, nurtured and free. We march in support of its parents and of the countless organizations who seek to support families. We march in support of the poor and disenfranchised, the lonely, the sick and the infirm. For in a society which values perfection and tends to turn askance to people and things which make them uncomfortable, the Church stands boldly for them.

Marching in January can be hard. Weather can wreak havoc, making each step a challenge. Yet standing for life means moving ahead; it means taking those difficult and sometimes unpopular steps. But we must continue to move. Our care for the unborn and the poor should not end at Constitution Avenue or on a warm bus ride home. We must, in our daily lives, be their voice. We must remember that, “we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works God has prepared for us in advance, that we should live in them.” (Ephesians 2:10)

If we espouse St. Paul’s words, taking them to heart and to action, our march will lead to better things here and to our Father in heaven.

Thank you to Rich Hunter and our Pro-Life Committee. for organizing the bus to the March for Life. I am grateful for their efforts throughout the year.

~Fr. Posey

Behind the Scenes – St. James Operations Update The St. James fiscal year begins on July 1st, so we reached the half-year mark on December 31st. During the first half of our fiscal year, we did well compared with our budget; income was up by +3% over the budget, while expenses were kept -2% below budget. Offertory collections totaled $1,020,301, which was +$99,301 (or +11%) more than we conservatively budgeted for the half-year.

We completed 13 building improvement projects during the first half of the fiscal year, as shown below: Project Completed Funded by Replaced Church Kneelers & Pew Cushions 125th Anniversary Donors Repaired Cracks & Repainted Walls & Trim in Church 125th Anniversary Donors Installed Locking Push Bars on Church Transept Doors 125th Anniversary Donors Installed Digital Displays in Church Vestibules 125th Anniversary Donors Replaced Heating/Cooling System in Church Sacristy 125th Anniversary Donors Replace Carpets in Church 125th Anniversary Donors Renovated School Cafeteria School PTO Installed LED Message Sign on School Front Lawn School PTO Replaced all School Water Fountains School PTO Installed Handrails in all School Stairwells 2008 Capital Campaign Filled Cracks and Repainted "A" and "B" Parking Lots 2008 Capital Campaign Reconfigured Heller Hall Stage to Remove Step Hazard 2008 Capital Campaign Reset Stone Wall in Front of School along Broad Street 2008 Capital Campaign

As you can see, we were able to achieve solid gains in the appearance, functionality and safety of our church and school buildings this year, thanks to your generosity.

In the works, we are finalizing a comprehensive Emergency Response Plan, in collaboration with Diocesan experts and local law enforcement officials, to ensure the continued safety of our church community. We have implemented an electronic maintenance work order system to help manage and track the many facilities requests received every day by our small but dedicated three-man maintenance team. And we have just begun the cycle of mid-year job performance evaluations for our staff members.

If you have any questions or comments regarding church operations, please feel free to contact Rich at [email protected].

Renew, Revitalize, Grow: Very Rev. Patrick L. Posey 2006-Present

An Arlington, Virginia native, Father Patrick Posey attended St. Agnes and Bishop O’Connell before studying at St. Charles

Borromeo in Philadelphia and Mount St. Mary’s in Emmitsburg. After his ordination in May 1991, he served at Sacred Heart Parish in Winchester.

In 1995 he was sent to the diocesan mission in Banica, Dominican Republic, where he was not only the parish priest, but a social worker, farmer, builder, reluctant veterinary aide and one time dental assistant. He returned to the area in 2003 where he was named pastor of St. Francis de Sales in Purcellville. Bishop Loverde assigned him to Saint James in 2006.

By 2008 it was evident that time had taken a toll on our beautiful parish campus. Windows both in the school and our historic church were in need of replacement or repair. Crumbling foundations, parking lots, curbs and retaining walls had fallen victim to weather and use. Roofs needed to be replaced and security upgraded. Moreover, a sustained commitment to providing tuition assistance was a high priority. As such, Father sought to raise $2.5 million to face these pressing issues. After an initial silent phase, the Legacy of St. James Capital Campaign went public in October: the day of the sharpest decline in the stock market since the 1920s. Nevertheless, our goal was met and exceeded! Today we reap the benefits of parishioners’ generosity.

Ever mindful of opportunities for outreach and evangelization, Father Posey began an email newsletter and now oversees a robust social media presence with Facebook, Twitter and our own You Tube Channel. Utilizing Constant Contact to inform and inspire, he has brought weekly and Lenten reflections to parishioners. Our bulletin highlights the many and varied activities of our busy parish, complete with his own weekly column.

Yet Father’s communications are not limited to a quick tweet. He takes time to hand-sign hundreds of birthday cards a month and Christmas cards for the entire parish. Each spring Father, our priests and deacons honor the more than 300 volunteers by serving them dinner at our annual volunteer recognition event. In September, what began as a small picnic after the 5:00pm Mass several years ago has burgeoned into an all-day gathering of more than 1000 people.

During Father Posey’s time here, we have seen an increase in the number of spiritual and educational offerings – Bible Studies, guest speakers, Prayer Partners for our Homebound, retreats, pilgrimages, and a new Parish Library. We have also seen greater integration of our Hispanic community, improved volunteerism and activism in our community. Parishioners regularly donate for emergency needs – be it hurricanes or earthquakes. Father has led groups to rural Kentucky bringing Christmas cheer to those who see very little of it.

In 2012, Father and then-principal Sr. Nancy Kindelan, IHM embarked upon a five-year strategic plan for the School. The combined efforts of a large volunteer committee has resulted in greater stability in enrollment, increased engagement of parish and parent community in the life of the School and additional funding for improvements and scholarships. In 2014, the School was awarded an unprecedented (in the diocese) second Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence.

Page 9 January 21, 2018

More than six years ago, parishioner Tim Aubry came to Father with the idea of a Lenten Fish Fry. Actually, multiple fry(s) as each Friday during Lent sees more than 500 SOLES (!) sharing food and fellowship. Each year has a theme, from the original Act of Cod to the more current May the Fish Be With You. More than 24,000 meals have been served by a large and dedicated cadre of volunteers.

In 2016 Father celebrated his 25th Jubilee. A Mass and reception brought hundreds of parishioners, family and friends together to celebrate this milestone event.

Last May, we celebrated our 125th anniversary with a Mass and reception. Newly appointed Bishop Michael Burbidge was present as we gathered once again in friendship.

Today we are a faith community reminded and inspired by our patron Saint. “As James tells us, we are called to be doers of the word, not hearers only,” says Fr. Posey. “I am blessed to be surrounded by women and men of faith who walk with each other, who share the joys and sorrows of life, who remind me daily of the power of discipleship. I hope that what we do here is to renew our calling to Christ and to each other; to revitalize our spirits; and always to grow in love of the Lord.”
