Twenty days after 250 of their troops got into a fist-brawl at the Pangong Tso Lake in Eastern Ladakh,India and China have still not sorted out what pre-

sumably were localised irritants on the 3,488-km Lineof Actual Control (LAC) between the two countries. The Chinese blame the confrontations on India’s build-ing of roads in the Galwan Valley. India says theseroads, meant for locals in this sparsely populated re-gion, are well within its side of the LAC.

Matters escalated with the fisticuffs on May 5 inLadakh, and a brawl on May 9 in Sikkim involving 100soldiers; the visual sighting of each other’s military hel-icopters at the LAC; an Indian Sukhoi LAC sortie in-side Indian airspace; and the erection of 100 Chinesetents in the Galwan Valley along with the movement ofheavy vehicles and monitoring equipment.

The Army denied reports that Indian soldiers werebriefly detained after the Ladakh brawl, though someIndian injuries were serious enough for evacuation toLeh for treatment. Reports indicate that about 1,000Chinese troops crossed the LAC at each of three points;as a result, now, at various points spanning 80 km, Indi-an and Chinese troops are stationed about half a kilo-metre from each other. India may be moving in moretroops.

This confrontation comes at an unfortunate momentwhen the world is combating the coronavirus pandemic.Cases have this weekend surged in two regions accord-ing to the World Health Organisation: Latin Americaand India. New Delhi not only has to reckon with thesurge in cases but also the economic crisis caused by itslockdown of the country that is lifting unevenly. EasternCommand had to send three columns of soldiers toBengal to help the state government in relief and rescueoperations in the aftermath of cyclone Amphan. Onehopes the government does not get distracted by theevents on the LAC from its task of preventing deathsand reviving the economy. The two governments’ spe-cial representatives have spent years evolving mecha-nisms and protocols to deal with such local flare-ups,but five meetings between local commanders from bothsides seemed to have done little to lower temperatures.A visit by Army chief General M.M. Naravane to XIVCorps headquarters in Leh on Friday appears to havehelped, but there is still a ways to go. No doubt the Chi-nese feel irked with India of late: over the constructionon our side of the LAC; over India’s move to curb Chi-nese foreign investment; over India’s splitting ofLadakh, of which Aksai Chin is historically a part, intoa separate Union Territory; over the Army chief’s recentpointing to China as being the agent provocateur for therecent border quarrel between India and Nepal.

COVID-19's dangerous cardiovascular complicationsArecent guide from

emergency medi-cine doctors details

the potentially deadly car-diovascular complicationsCOVID-19 can cause, in-cluding heart attacks, heartfailures, and blood clots, that can lead to strokes.

The new paper fromUVA (University of Vir-ginia) Health's WilliamBrady, MD, and col-leagues aims to serve as aguide for emergency-med-icine doctors treating pa-tients who may have orare known to haveCOVID-19. The authorsnote that much attentionhas been paid to the pul-monary (breathing) com-plications of COVID-19,

but less has been saidabout the cardiovascularcomplications that canlead to death or lasting im-pairment. "In writing thisarticle, we hope to in-crease emergency physi-cians' knowledge andawareness of this newpathogen and its impact onthe cardiovascular sys-tem," said Brady, ofUVA's Department ofEmergency Medicine.

"As we encountermore and more patientswith COVID-19-relatedillness, we are increasingour understanding of itsimpact on the body in gen-eral and the cardiovascularsystem. The rate of learn-ing in this area is amazing-

ly rapid. Information con-tinues to change weekly, ifnot daily," noted Brady.Heart failure is a particularconcern in patients withCOVID-19. One study, thearticle authors note, foundthat almost a quarter ofCOVID-19 patients - 24per cent -- were sufferingacute heart failure whenthey were first diagnosedwith the coronavirus.(This doesn't mean that 24per cent of all COVID-19patients will suffer heartfailure. The authors statethat it remains unclear ifthe heart failure was theresult of COVID-19specifically or if the viruswas worsening undiag-nosed heart failure.) Of the

patients with heart failure, nearly half were notknown to have high bloodpressure or cardiovasculardisease. The paper alsonotes that COVID-19, andother diseases that causesevere inflammationthroughout the body, in-crease the risk that fattyplaque built up in theblood vessels will rupture, leading to heart attacksand stroke. Influenza andcertain other viruses havebeen associated with in-creased risk of plaque rup-tures within the first weekafter the disease was diag-nosed, the authors state in their review of the avail-able COVID-19 medicalliterature.

Advisories across theglobe to "Stay at home"and maintain social dis-

tancing has become the mantraof the current turbulent times.Solutions are still to be found.Symptomatic treatments andpreventive measures are invogue. The effort is to breakthe chain of spread throughquarantine, isolation and by de-veloping immune which canfight this deadly contaminatingdisease.

Acommunity on whichmajority of India thrives formeeting our day to day needsin this unexpected time are Ki-rana stores. These unorganizedkirana, scattered network pres-ent inside galis, mohalas areoperating without any specificguidelines or standard operat-ing procedures but serving uswhole heartedly. These Kiranashops might be small with fewhundred square feet of physicalpresence having a stock ofnearly few thousand items.Their tendency is to serve usfor long hours restricted fromearly morning to late nightevery day. This is now limitedto few hours only. Even thenthe kiranas are helping all of usto run our homes with com-plete devotion. Nowadays, eyes gazing and ears wait to lis-

ten to loud street cries orchants, the pushcarts movefrom one street to another arenone other than local streetvendor or hawker serving usfresh fruits and vegetables. TheMinistry of Housing and Urbanpoverty alleviation states thatthere are 10 million street ven-dors in India.

The pushcart hawkers andkiranas stores, all businesses inyour vicinity referring to Hyperlocal platforms are solving theproblem of matching immedi-ate demand of grocery with thenearest available supply in themost optimized manner in to-day's time.

The reality is that we takethem for granted. Street ven-dors have played a critical rolein the current crisis. The bigmandis did not have people todistribute the vegetables and

fruits at the level of retail afterthe immediate shutdown. Streetvendors did not have the per-mission either. However, theGovernment allowed them toact and they risked their lives torestore the supplies across thecountry and became lifeline forall. It is ironical that India doesnot have a clear-cut trade poli-cy. Technically speaking a ki-rana store needs to register with"Shops and establishment Act"along with statutory tax com-pliances. The reality remainsthat even these compliances areconspicuously absent for mostof the kirana. Protection of anykind is also not available forthem except for the fact thatthey may or may not be part ofany union. Additionally, theStreet Vendors of India werenot even recognized by thegovernment for a very longtime. It was only in 2014 that"THE STREETVENDORSACT" was enforced. Over theyears the street vendors haveorganized themselves into tradeunions and associations, andnumerous NGOs have startedworking for them.

Arecent research haspointed out thatmovement-based

yoga can significantly im-prove mental health duringthe ongoing COVID-19 cri-sis.

The new research fromthe University of SouthAustralia was published inthe British Journal of SportsMedicine.

The world-first studyconducted in partnershipwith the Federal Universityof Santa Maria, UNSWSydney, Kings College Lon-don and Western SydneyUniversity found that move-ment-based yoga improvesthe mental health of peopleliving with a range of men-tal disorders, with the bene-fits being incremental withthe amount of yoga theypractised.

Lead researcher, UniSAPhD candidate, JacintaBrinsley says it's a welcomeand timely finding givenstrict social distancingmeasures that limit exerciseoptions.

"As self-isolation esca-lates and people find them-selves working from homeand unable to physicallycatch up with their friendsand family, we're likely tosee more people feel lonelyand disconnected," Brinsleysays.

"Exercise has alwaysbeen a great strategy for

people struggling with thesefeelings as it boosts bothmood and health. But asgyms and exercise classesof all kinds are now closed -even jogging with a friendis strongly discouraged -people are looking for alter-natives, and this is whereyoga can help.

"Our research showsthat movement-based yogaimproved symptoms of de-pression (or improved men-

tal health) for people livingwith a range of mentalhealth conditions includinganxiety, post-traumaticstress, and major depres-sion. So, it's very goodnews for people strugglingin times of uncertainty."

The research, publishedin the British Journal ofSports Medicine, examined19 studies (1080 partici-pants) across six countries(US, India, Japan, China,

Germany and Sweden),where individuals had a for-mal diagnosis of a mentaldisorder, including depres-sion and anxiety.

The researchers definedmovement-based yoga asany form of yoga whereparticipants are physicallyactive at least 50% of thetime, that is forms of yogathat emphasize holding pos-es and flowing through se-quences of poses.

Globally, around 450million people suffer frommental health issues, withthe World Health Organiza-tion reporting that one infour people will be affectedby a mental health conditionor a neurological disorder atsome point in their lives. InAustralia, almost half ofadults (aged 18-85 years)will experience mental ill-ness. Assoc Prof SimonRosenbaum says while the

results are promising, chal-lenges remain. "Important-ly, the most vulnerable inour community are often theleast likely to have access toexercise or yoga programsdespite the potential bene-fits," Assoc Prof Rosen-baum says. "Our resultshave significant implica-tions and demonstrate thatyou don't necessarily needto go for a jog to benefitfrom movement."

Yoga a powerful tool toimprove mental health

"As self-isolationescalates andpeople findthemselvesworking fromhome and unableto physicallycatch up withtheir friends andfamily, we'relikely to see morepeople feellonely anddisconnected,"Brinsley says.
