Amrita Rao: Eijaz Khan’s hot, Shakti Arora looks great and Siddharth Nigam is totally adorable! 08 MAY, 2016 [email protected] 3 Anil Kapoor: I've always been a supporter of independent films Finally!! Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt BEGIN shoot- ing for the sequel of Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania! Tiger Shroff set to have a FANTASTIC career, reveal trade experts! A ctor-producer Anil Kapoor says he is a big supporter of independent cinema and has pursued the career of an independent filmmaker when he had started produc- ing films. "I've always been a supporter of independent films. I myself have been an independent filmmaker when me and my brother started... The biggest example of an independent film was 'Slumdog Millionaire', which was a small, little film which became so huge," Anil told IANS. "All the independent filmmakers should dream... Anything can happen, they might make a film which might be seen all over the world. I want to wish all the independent filmmakers all the best for the future films which they will be making," he added. Anil ventured into production with the 2002 film 'Badhaai Ho Badhaai' and subsequently produced and co-pro- duced numerous films such as 'My Wife's Murder', 'Short Kut: The Con is On', 'Aisha', 'No Problem', 'Khubsoorat' (2014) and 'Gandhi, My Father', which had even won a National Award. He is also producing the Hindi ver- sion of the popular international series, '24', which will return with its second season later this year. "I am extremely delighted with Anil Kapoor's comments and it is a big boost to our campaign. It is a matter of great pride that such a big name, Anil Kapoor, also supports independent filmmakers and the biggest motivation for all of us is that he is a superstar, but he, too, had to start as an independent filmmaker," Pandey said. Shruti Haasan plans to return back to her FIRST LOVE! S he started making movies to fund her music. Then the movies took over her life, in a way she likens to Godzilla. Now, after six years of non-stop acting, Shruti Haasan is going back to her roots, roots that have nothing to do with film or her famous film-star parents and everything to do with a little band she started in LA back in the 90s. Here’s an excerpt from the interview which features in the May 2016 issue of GQ India, where she talks about the varied tunes of her semi-charmed life and how does it feel to return to her first love, music. Shruti waited patiently inside a box for her cue. It was to be a surprise performance at an event starring her famous par- ents. Her mother was to query, “Where’s Shruti?”, and the consummate ideal of a celebrity daughter would pop out and make her singing debut in front of a 200,000-member audi- ence. And then she popped out but the music wasn’t there to back her up — just the vast silence of expectation. But instead of cracking, Shruti thought, “Screw it, I’m gonna sing any- way,” she explains, “and I went a capella. Then the track final- ly queued, people started cheering, and I just went, ‘This is the shiz. This is what I wanna do for the rest of my life.’” She was seven years old. Twenty-three years later, she hasn’t strayed from her decision, made at an age when you couldn’t be trusted to tie your own shoes. “There’s just been nothing else that gave me that feeling,” she says. “Even singing in the studio,” she explains, “is nothing like singing in front of peo- ple. I get a similar feeling sometimes when I sneak into a movie screening of mine and the audience is really going nuts for a scene. Only then do I feel like I’m standing onstage. That immediate energy you receive from the audience is the stuff I live for.” “I was just a weird, awkward kid, “ she giggles, “and then growing up I was an awkward teenager, and then I became an awkward adult, and I just realised that I am awk- ward as a person. I’ve had crippling confidence issues, or image issues, so many things. And now I’ve just come to a point where beyond a point I generally don’t give a crap about things I can’t change. There is a kind of peace. I guess it’s taken me longer than most human beings to get to a place where I’m absolutely cool with myself…I really don’t know how to play the game. I am still an outsider.” Aside from the trilingual movie with Dad, 2016 is the year Shruti Haasan the movie star gets back to her roots: Blues. Rock ’n’ roll. Punk. LA punk, like The Germs. “Now I’m grown up,” she says. “I’m crazy in a way that works for me, as opposed to how it works for the business. But you know, I still relate to the same stuff, I’m still pretty much complaining about the same stuff as ten years ago, the whole ‘Why don’t you love me? No, I don’t need you. So it’s fine. I work so much, if I were to actually have a boyfriend, he’d have to be a pilot that takes me around, you know? It’s angry girl music.” BOLLYWOOD Y es! It’s happening! And here’s all you need to know about the first schedule of the film, which begins today… So BollywoodLife was the first ones’ to break the news over the sequel of Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. Our source EXCLUSIVELY revealed to us, “We are taking the Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania franchise ahead and we are planning a few movies around the franchise. Our next has Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan.” As if this wasn’t enough to get us excited, we soon also got to hear the name of this sequel which is reportedly titled, Badrinath Ki Dulhania. In fact, things got even more exciting after Varun and Alia further decided to tease us by engaging in a ‘Dulhania’ Twitter chat yesterday where Varun tweeted, “I hear the 1st ever love franchise is in the air! @dhar- mamovies @karanjohar @aliaa08 is that for real??” To which, Alia replied, “The “dulhania” is on the move!! Is this true though??” Well, it was certain that an official announcement around the same is just around the corner. And turns out today is that lucky day guys. Yes! E arning laurels for her role of Kalyani in Meri Awaaz Hi Pehchaan Hai, Amrita opens up to BollywoodLife about her first stint on TV. India’s quintessential girl-next-door, Vivah actress Amrita Rao said hi to Indian television this year by taking on the role of Kalyani on the musical saga. The actress plays a charac- ter that is inspired by India’s nightingale, Lata Mangeshkar. Excerpts from an interview… What made you take up Meri Awaaz Hi Pehchaan Hai? Firstly, it was a novel concept. I don’t think it would have worked on an already established GEC but it is fits the bill of a young chan- nel like &TV. Moreover, I could relate to the story as an audience. I can never do a project that I cannot relate to as a viewer. The con- cept, role and the presence of Kushal Zaveri were the three main fac- tors that prompted my decision. I have seen Kushal’s work on the youth show Kushal and he left me totally impressed. The makers told us that you were the first choice for the role. Did that surprise you considering you had zero TV background? When I met Vikas (Vikas Gupta) for the first time, he told me that they had conducted a multi-city survey to find out who would suit the best for the role and my name was the first preference. It was huge- ly encouraging. I can relate to Kalyani at many levels. She is passion- ate, simple and totally dedicated to her craft. At the same time, she won’t compromise on her ethics. There is a child-like innocence in her. Kalyani relies on her talent and is totally devoid of all the trappings that form a part of the entertainment world. I could see myself in Kalyani as I too believe in my craft and have never been interested in stuff like fashion, partying, networking, etc to grab the limelight. You are performing with veterans like Zarina Wahab and Deepti Naval. How was the experience? It is a dream cast. One can only put down such names on paper and to see them actually come together is a miracle. It seems like the cast- ing was done in jannat (heaven). It is surprising but Deeptiji (Deepti Naval) looks a lot like me. The way we act, emote and our body lan- guage is also quite similar. It is a seamless transition. I have been a fan of her since her Chashme Baddoor days. She too has done very relatable films and was not the typical glam diva. I am thrilled to know that she will take my character forward. How much time did you invest on learning music? I learnt music for three years as a school-kid. I revisited those days. I did Riyaaz for one and a half months. I also learnt a bit of the sitar, which is used to add the effect. I observed a lot of singers and live con- certs to pick up the nuances. It was a challenge. How was it different, the experience of working on a TV show? Did you have to take any extra efforts? Meri Awaaz…is very different than what’s currently on air. It is shot like a film with a lot of detailing. Kushal is a fine director and gives us a lot of liberty. He keeps a positive vibe on the sets. The equipment used is hi-tech much like ones used in films. Moreover, we don’t shoot in plastic sets. The crew has worked hard to hunt down locales in and around Mumbai that have the retro feel about them. It is a very tough as everything is so modern but they are doing it week after week. Which are your favourite shows? Well, I don’t watch a lot of TV. I loved shows like Dekh Bhai Dekh, which was a classic. Shows made in the 80s and early 90s have a lot of quality in terms of acting and story-telling. I also enjoyed Nukkad and Mungerilal Ke Haseen Sapne. It is sad to see that when it comes to mature content on fiction shows, we haven’t made any progress. We are just going backwards creatively. The kind of stuff on TV right now just scares me. Makers are writing what not in the name of fic- tion! Who are guys from TV whom you find good-looking? Hmmm…my co-star from the show, Eijaz Khan is quite handsome. I have seen Shakti Arora. I think he is one of the best-looking guys on TV. However, I simply adore Siddharth Nigam on Ashoka. He is cute and a power-packed performer. T iger Shroff‘s Baaghi released last weekend and in the first three days it nearly earned Rs 40 crore, which is a HUGE number for a newcomer and we are sure in the next few days, Shraddha Kapoor and Tiger’s film is all set to create new box office records. Tiger’s second film has impressed one and all and it seems that he is all set to have a FANTASTIC career ahead… As exhibitor and distributor, Akshaye Rathi reveals, “Tiger’s USP is his action and his dance and he is phenomenal at both. I believe that going by the rate of one or two films a year, he can have a fantastic career catering to the mass audience. I am pretty sure he will do well. Up next he has a Remo D’Souza film – A Flying Jatt, which looks great. Forget Varun Dhawan, if a bunch of non- star dancers and a Jacky Bhagnani can cut across the mass audi- ence with the help of Remo, then I am sure that with A Flying Jatt he can surely do that. Tiger’s film along with the impact he has made with his first two films, will only add to that mass value of A Flying Jatt. And I am sure it will be phenomenal film, which will cut across the multiplexes, single-screens, class and the mass. It is a good time for Tiger Shroff on this front.” Trade expert and Editor of Supercinema, Amul Mohan says, “It is a great time for him. It is only his second film and for his second film to do nearly Rs 40 crore in its first weekend, is tremendous that too when other films have struggled. Baaghi did it so easily, so it is great for them (Tiger and Shraddha). In fact, Tiger has signed some good films, so it is a good scenario for him right now.” Tiger is a gem. He appeals to the mass audience, which only two other next-gens actors do. As Akshaye Rathi further adds, “I believe there are only three actors from this generation – Varun Dhawan, Ranveer Singh and Tiger Shroff who have been able to cut across the masses, classes, the multiplex audience, the single screen audience, the metros and the Tier II & III cities. So far, even though they are good performers, the others have really not been able to break the ice with that single-screen pan-India audience. That is a HUGE competitive edge that these three have over the others, as of now.” But, what sets them apart from the rest? Akshaye adds, “This has happened consciously! If you look at the kind of films that these three guys chose, whether it is Main Tera Hero in case of Varun, whether it is a Bajirao Mastani in case of Ranveer or Baaghi for Tiger, which really did well at the Tier II & III belts. To be a true blue superstar, who can do a certain degree of business irrespective of how good, bad or ugly the film is, you need to have that audience who look forward to your film – which is the mass audience.
