OUR LITURGY

Today, we are warned of God’s wrath if we commit any unjust act toward those who are weak. God is compassionate and hears the cries of those who are hurting. Paul praises the Thessalonians for their faith and for being role models to the world. Jesus teaches us the basis of all law: love for God and unselfish love for one’s

Deodorant and Razors, Shampoo and Conditioners, and Laundry Detergent and Dish Washing Soap. Thank you! Next Saturday October 29th, at 10:30 AM, we will have our Fall Anointing of the Sick Mass. We invite all who are suffering from the effects of old age or long-term illness, going in for surgery, or just diagnosed with an illness to come to this Mass. Also next weekend at all of the Masses, some members of the parish family and I, will speak about Stewardship. In the fall, we concentrate on how we can be the best stewards with our treasure. We will go over the parish’s financial needs and realities, and how we can all help to do our part. In the springtime, we will discuss time and talent-how we can use the gifts that God has given us and use them for the good of all. After we talked about this last year, our weekly donations increased and I am so grateful for your wonderful response, and I am asking for your continued support and help once again. Please remember that Tuesday November 1st is the Feast of All Saints and is a Holy Day of Obligation. The Mass Schedule is Monday Evening October 31st at 7:30 PM, Tuesday November 1st at 7 AM, 9 AM, 12:10 PM, 5 PM, and 7:30 PM. On Wednesday November 2nd The Feast of All Souls, we will celebrate as Special Mass of Remembrance at 7:30 PM. At this Mass, we will announce all of the names (during the Prayer of The Faithful) of those who during the past year had their funerals celebrated here at St. Joseph’s. However, all are invited to attend this Mass and come up and light a candle for loved ones who have passed on. Let us pray, Gracious God, we come together with thanks that you have created us in your own image. We pray strength to love You by loving our neighbors so we can show Your face in this world. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.

God Bless You Always! Fr Mike

“Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone! Therefore, you shall love the Lord, our God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength.” (Deut. 6:4 & 5) This ancient quote from The Book of Deuteronomy, is known as the Shema-the essential creed of Judaism. This is the sentence with which every Jewish service opens and the first text, which every Jewish child commits to memory-including Jesus. It tells us, that to God we must give total love, and this love must be a love of dynamic action. This is what Jesus is calling for, when He offers His answer to the Pharisees and the Scholar of Law who asked Jesus which commandment of the Law was the greatest. So, Jesus quotes Deuteronomy Chapter 6 is telling us that Faith and Religion are all about Love. But how do we do this, actively-Jesus gives us the answer. “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Let’s look at this answer. One cannot love his/her neighbor without first loving God, but we cannot truly love God if we do not see God in our brothers and sisters. God created us this way- to be like Him and so like God we are to care for others. That is why God does command the people in the Book of Exodus not to oppress aliens, or neglect widows and orphans, or take interest on a loan, etc. So, Jesus’ answer reflects the bringing together of the ancient teachings of Israel-Love God and Love Neighbor. But we know that it is not easy to love one’s neighbor. So, Love God first! Only when we love God first do our neighbor’s become lovable-again because God created us in His image and likeness-so if we can see God in our brothers and sisters, well you know the rest. We can only do this together and with the help of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, the next time you find it hard to love your neighbor-try to see God in him/her and look beyond that which gets in the way of blinding you! One way to show our love for our neighbors (in a small way) is to help the needy in our community during the upcoming Holiday Season. So many people make food donations, and we thank them for this and ask you to keep doing so, but our brother and sisters need personal items as well. Starting next weekend and for the next 4 weekends we will be asking you to donate some of these items. You can bring them to Mass with you and place them before the statue of The Blessed Mother. If you are able, next weekend please bring with you TOOTHPASTE AND SOAP. In the following weeks, we will be asking for:

RESPECT LIFE Today let’s look at a few excerpts from various sources, which all have something to say regarding abortion: “The abortion was almost nine years ago. I think of my baby

who I know deep in my heart was a boy – I named him Baby “J”. I think about him everyday, and I cry everyday for him. I found this site by accident and the tears just flowed. I am sick with grief, self-hatred over my abortion. I have told no one, Baby “J’s” father insisted on that. I was a single mom at the time, no health insurance, working a minimum wage job. I had no family support at all. I felt I had no choice. I wish so much he had been born, perhaps I could have given him up for adoption. Sometimes the pain and grief is so overwhelming, I feel that I have no right to have a happy life.” “Today is so hard. My child would have turned seven this week. He should be here with me, we should be together. Instead, I sit here alone, head pounding, tears falling, feeling myself drifting back into that pit of regret and pain that I fought so hard to get out of. Every time I feel like I’ve moved on, it comes back. When will this stop?” Anonymous letters to a post-abortion website “This (Korean cloning of a human) is a sign of moral regress. Human cloning turns procreation into a manufacturing process, treating human life as a commodity made to pre-set specifications. Science and technology are great human goods when placed at the service of the human person. Here the opposite occurred. Human beings were treated as products of technology, then used and discarded.” Cardinal William Keeler, February 12, 2004, on the announcement that Korean scientists had successfully created a human clone. According to Dr. Martha Shuping, a psychiatrist with more than ten years of experience in helping women with post-abortion issues, delayed reactions are often triggered by subsequent life events such as the birth of a baby, the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, a religious conversion, or even physical changes like menopause. Many women have “anniversary reactions”, such as anxiety attacks, depression, suicidal impulses, or abdominal cramping around the anniversary date or month of the abortion, or around the time when their babies would have been due. Should you know of anyone suffering so, please tell them that help is available. The organization called Rachel’s Vineyard was formed for just that reason. You can contact them through the Life Center of Long Island, telephone 631-243-2373.

PREGNANCY CRISIS HOTLINE - We are here to

St Joseph’s School

So many wonderful things have gone on in our school in the past two weeks. Our 7th and 8th grade students placed 2nd last week in the Newsday Stock Market Game. Our students have competed with local public and private schools and our school has scored in the top ten for the intermediate level!

Watch for our students to be named in Newsday each week!

The students in grades Nursery-Grade 8 have worked in Cooperation with The Red Cross preparing toiletry packets for the victims of the hurricane who have been placed into our area. We prepared 112 family packets and 140 individual packets! Our Third Graders and our Student Council worked very hard at putting the packets together to be sent off. Thanks to everyone who participated.

Students in Grades 5 and 6 participated in a workshop by the Health Department on the Dangers of Smoking. The students learned a great deal from Mrs. Anderson who came to our school and gave an excellent presentation.

Our students in Grades Pre-K - Grade 3 walked through a “safe house demonstration” from the Fire Department. They learned what to do in a burning house. They also received fire hats, coloring books, etc. for being such great helpers.

Students in Grades N-5 will be participating in a Halloween Fun Night on Friday evening, October 28 from 7:30-9PM. Students in Grades 6-8 will be attending a Halloween Dance in the gym from 6-9PM.

Good luck to all of our 8th grade students who will be taking the High School Placement Exam on Saturday, October 29th.

Even Used Inkjet Cartridges, Have Their Uses

We have found a way to help St Joseph and keep those complicated pieces of plastic, metal and printed circuit boards out of the land fill. Drop them off (in a plastic baggie) when you come to mass. We will send them to a company who reuses them and gives the parish a bounty for each. One note, to clear confusion, if it is larger than a fist, it is not an inkjet cartridge!!!
