FAIRVIEW’S NEW WHEELCHAIR VAN

For the longest time Fairview had a wheelchair accessible van on its wish list. Well, our prayers were recently answered by an anonymous do-nor. A completely renovated van was recently presented to Fairview which will now allow us to transport wheelchair bound residents to dine-outs, for mystery rides, and for other short trips and excursions. This will significantly enhance their quality of life. We wish to thank our anonymous donor for his extreme generosity.

BAR SCANNERS NOW IN USE AT FAIRVIEW NURSE’S STATIONS

Through the generosity of Pfizer, Inc. Fairview nurses and staff now have the ability to review lab work and order resi-dent medications directly with L&M hospital and our medica-tion supplier. Pfizer donated five laptop computers that are being used at Fairview’s nursing stations for ordering and logging resident medications and for lab work and test results. This is a huge time saver for the nursing staff and also assures for more accuracy. Pictured is Cindy Mantle, medical records secretary, at one of the laptop work stations.

OUR INTERGENERATIONAL PROGRAM AT FAIRVIEW

Fairview residents Flossie Beale and Paul Starling are giving insight to one of Fairview’s Child Development Center youngsters. Over the last quarter Fairview residents have been to the child development center for several activities. Recently, they joined with the children to listen to a story teller, bake yummy holiday cookies and visit classrooms to observe and join in the activity of the day. The children also come to Fairview’s Recreation Room and participate in art projects and story time with hot chocolate. They also come through Fairview’s halls regularly and greet our residents.

FAIRVIEW CHRISTMAS PARTY

The Fairview Resident Christmas Party was held December 23. Pictured above is Santa’s helper, Tiffiny Stanley, Santa, played by Tim Stanley, and Santa’s other helper, Jennifer Johnson. The residents enjoyed cake, punch and cookies while receiv-ing a generous gift from Santa. After the party was over in the auditorium, Santa continued to visit residents in their rooms. They were absolutely delighted to meet him and re-ceive a gift.

FOURTH GRADERS VISIT FAIRVIEW TO INTERACT WITH RESIDENTS

A group of fourth graders from the Nathan Hale School in New London now make monthly visits to Fairview to meet new friends and to help the residents with various art projects. Mrs. JoAnn Francisconi, pictured standing in the rear, is the class’s teacher. JoAnn’s mom, Doris Kanabis, is a resident at Fairview.

FAIRVIEW HOLDS THIRD ANNUAL ANTIQUES & COLLECTIBLES AUCTION

& DESSERT EXTRAVAGANZA

Fairview held its third annual charitable Antiques and Col-lectibles Auction on Saturday, November 5 in the Broomfield - Wilson Auditorium at Fairview. Over 140 guests attended and enjoyed delicious desserts and specialty coffees/teas pro-vided by some of the area’s finest restaurants. Also attending again this year was special guest auctioneer, Daniel Buck Soules, (pictured) who appears as an appraiser in Decorative Arts and Collectibles on the Emmy nominated hit PBS televi-sion program, “Antiques Roadshow.” Over $50,000 was raised for Fairview’s building campaign to help fund its on-going new addition and renovation. We want to extend a special thank you to our auction com-mittee members: Richard Burke, Evelyn Harris, Mildred Carlson, Dean Anderson, Susan Reyher, Marilyn Searle, Mae Horan, Gail Breslin, Jane Hickok and Carol Boiselle. We also want to thank all of the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs who so generously provided great financial and moral support in order to make this year’s auction the most successful yet.

Fairview held a “Hard Hat” tour of its new 16,000 square foot addition on Friday, October 21. Tours were given to approximately 60 attendees includ-ing those pictured: (L-R) Bob Tabor, Sr., Vice President of Chelsea Groton Bank and Fairview Development Committee member; Jane Hickok, a resident of Fellow-ship Manor; Jim Malloy, Fairview Administrator; Rich-ard Kenyon, architect; Connie Klowskowski, Treasurer of Fairview’s Board; Peggy Trakas, member of Fair-view’s Board and Development Committee; Tricia Barkley, Interim Director of the Greater Mystic Cham-ber of Commerce; John Gagliardi, President/Owner of CORE, general contractor for Fairview’s new addition; and Tony Sheridan, President of the Chamber of Com-merce of Eastern CT. This event was co-sponsored by the Greater Mystic Chamber and the Chamber of Com-merce of Eastern CT. Children from the Fairview day-care center, Friends Learning Together, also attended escorted by Center Director, Rebecca Cruelles (standing at right).

CHAIRITABLE GIVING TO FAIRVIEW IS ON THE RISE! Through the generosity of many donors and friends of Fairview we are pleased to report that our fund-raising goal of $40,000 for our annual Antiques & Collectibles Auction was surpassed…by over $10,000! (See story/pictures on page 6). We will be conducting our first Annual Fund appeal within the next few weeks. A solicitation mailing will be followed-up by a phonathon. All proceeds from the appeal will be available to Fairview in an unrestricted manner, meaning that we can use the funds where we think they are most needed for the annual operation of Fairview. Our goal this year is $10,000. A donation envelope is included in this newsletter for your conven-ience. Our fundraising cycle began on October 1, 2005 and ends on September 30, 2006. Other gift opportunities also exist including:

• Building Fund • Endowment • Memorial Gifts • Appreciated Stocks & Property • Child Development Center • Leaving a Bequest in Your Estate Plan

Please contact David Brown, Director of Development, at 860-445-7478 or at [email protected] if you would like more information regarding how you can make a charita-ble donation to FAIRVIEW. Thank you!

NEW ADDITION ON SCHEDULE TO OPEN IN JANUARY

The new building expansion pictured above will be ready for occupancy in January. The renovation of the existing nursing care center will then begin with a target completion date of June. A grand open-ing celebration will take place sometime during the summer.

Friends Learning Together Receives A Grant!

Friends Learning Together, Fairview,s Child Development Center was the recipient of a $510 grant from The Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism. The Center will use the grant (combined with funding provided by The Mystic Rotary Club and the Center’s Parent Committee) to celebrate emergent literacy with The Connecticut Storytelling Center’s “Littlest Listeners” program for preschool children ages 3-5. The program is designed to develop and support emergent literacy and is based upon the benchmarks for school readi-ness prepared by the State. Story times are led by talented professional storytellers, many of who are designated Master Teach-ing Artists by the Connecticut Commission on the Arts. Catherine Marx (right photo seated on floor), Director of the Governor’s Eastern Connecticut Office, attended representing Gov-ernor Jodi Rell for the initial session of the “Littlest Listeners” program which was held on November 30th at the Center. Resi-dents of the nursing home also attended as part of the Center’s Intergenerational Program. . For more information about upcoming storytelling sessions, please contact Rebecca Cruelles, Director, at 860-446-4337.

FAIRVIEW HOSTS CHRISTMAS PARTY FOR LOCAL CHILDREN

Through the efforts of Stonington Lodge #26, Niantic Lodge #17, and the Rebekah Lodge #20, over 30 children accompanied by their parents enjoyed a Christmas Party they won’t soon forget at Fairview. Charlie Beebe from the Stonington Lodge I.O.O.F. planned and organized a Christmas party for children from Stonington and Groton who might not have had the opportunity to receive a visit from Santa this year. Sponsors were recruited to donate $25.00 each in order to buy gifts for Santa to distribute in Fairview’s auditorium on Saturday, December 17. Face painters were also on hand along with ornament makers to help lend an extra bit of holiday cheer for the children and their families. Cookies and punch were provided by Fairview. TRIBUTE TO LORETTA SABBATH – DIRECTOR OF SOCIAL SERVICES by

Joanne Golembeski, RN

The following was read by Joanne Golembeski at Loretta Sabbath’s retirement party on December 19th. Loretta retired from Fairview on December 30 after over 32 years of service.

Welcome everyone. Thank you for coming to pay tribute to our friend Loretta and to wish her well on her retirement. I was asked to say a few words tonight since my relationship with Loretta actually began years ago – only for you Loretta would I date myself! It is very difficult to put into words everything that should be said in acknowl-edgement of all of Loretta’s dedication and service to Fairview…to the residents, their families and to the staff – but I will try. I remember hearing the Odd Fellows Home was hiring a nurse and how great a place it was to work. Driving up the driveway to the facility I reminisced about growing up in the area often sliding in the snow and fly-ing kites on the Odd Fellows property. We would wave to the people watching from the windows as we cajoled in our kid-like play. I was curi-ous about this old mansion and what went on inside. It was a scary look-ing place but as fate would have it, I would learn you can’t judge a book

by it cover. I was brought back to reality as I approached the building. I studied its cold stony appearance, long old driveway and small park-ing lot with time worn lighting. As I walked to the main entrance and opened the heavy wooden door, I had to walk up two flights of wide flat-painted gray staircases where the main floor was located. After entering through a pair of heavy steel doors, I found myself amongst chatter, laughter and several workers scurrying about in their duties. I observed the high ceilings, shiny natural woodwork, arched hallways and crown moldings. I even noticed an ancient elevator with an accordion style folding metal door still operating in spite of its squeaking and creaking. I thought it must be fun getting stuck in that thing! I also noticed several nicely dressed residents being lovingly cared for. They were being greeted by a well groomed gentleman who I would later learn was “Mr. Van”, Fairview’s Administrator (Jack VanVerdeghan). He in turn referred me to a young CNA with a broad smile and as we walked down the hall I asked her how she liked working here. Her reply was “it is great, real homey.” That was my first meeting with Loretta Sabbath. Then suddenly a nurse came around the corner carrying a wash basin and wearing a protective Johnny. This was my first introduction to my new DNS, Mrs. Duguid. I knew I would like it here. I thought everyone worked together and Loretta was right – it did not take long to be at home! Not long after our first encounter, Loretta was named Social Services Director. Now thirty years have passed, progress has been made and Fairview has grown with many changes taking place. One thing re-mains constant; Fairview is a highly respected facility providing quality care second to none! How great it is to be a part of that!! This is your night, Loretta. Your friends, co-workers, and families can’t thank you enough for all of your dedication. You are a genuine, compassionate, and empathetic lady. You have given unconditionally from the heart. It is immeasurable the people you have touched both professionally and personally. You have been our “comfort-zone.” Everyone knows we could walk through your door at any time, sometimes in tears, only to leave with a smile and encouragement. In spite of your trials and tribulations, you have always been there for others. You have set an example of how dealing with try-ing times can be turned into a positive thing, building resiliency and character. You are a woman of integrity who never compro-mises your values. You have earned respect by setting an example. For your kind and loving nature, we thank you. We wish you well as you begin your retirement and want you to know this is not ‘good-bye’, but ‘so-long for now’ because you can always ‘come home’ again!

JOANNY’S RETIREMENT PARTY

On October 14, 2005, Joan Jordan said farewell after twelve years of service and dedication to Fairview residents. Rowena DiMartino, President of the Resident Council, pre-sented Joan with a cherry wooden photo album. “Thank you for your love and dedication to the Fairview Residents” was engraved on the cover. These words were chosen by many of our Fairview residents. Once again from the Fairview residents and staff, “THANK YOU for your love and dedication and the way you touched many lives at Fairview.”

EB Management Club Visits Fairview The Electric Boat Management Association made a visit to Fairview on December 17. This has become an an-nual event that Fairview residents greatly look forward to. Santa and his helpers arrive on a gigantic sleigh for a visit with residents that included singing and the passing out of good cheer. Pictured are Santa and his helpers along with their sleigh.

GROTON LIGHT PARADE

Fairview participated in the Groton Lights Parade held on December 3. Mary Greebe from Fairview, Yolanda D’Elia, Patricia Bromley from Fellowship Manor, Tomi Stanley from recreation, Sarah Stanley, Volunteer Coordinator and David Brown, Director of Development with his wife Louise rode in the Fairview van. It was decorated with garland and large ornaments along with red bows. Fellowship Manor and Fair-view residents had a great time waving to all the people watching the parade. They are greatly looking forward to next year’s parade.

Carol Boiselle has been a volunteer since 1990, the year her mother became a resident of Fairview. When Carol’s mother passed away in 1995 she continued to serve as a volunteer and has dedicated countless hours to helping staff with various programs, particularly the weekly coffee socials organized by the Recreation Department. Carol has provided invaluable service as the editor of the “Point O’ View” which is published four times each year. She spends several hours each quarter laying out and editing the newsletter. Her expertise has added a much higher degree of professionalism to the newsletter which serves as Fairview’s main method of communication with its constituents. Carol also produces the Antiques & Collectibles Auction program book which is another time-consuming project.

Besides her volunteer work at Fairview, Carol also works occasionally as a fill-in secretary at the Poquonnock Bridge Baptist Church.

Tiffiny Stanley, daughter of Sarah Stanley, Volunteer Coordinator, has been a volunteer for a little over two years. She has a great rapport with the residents and attends many night functions as well as afternoon events. She has logged the most volunteer hours over the past years averaging 8-9 hours per week. She helps with the resident chorus and many other evening pro-grams. She also participates in the baking and glamour groups as well as other entertainment and birthday party events. Tiffiny is sixteen years old and is home-schooled. Her other passion be-sides helping the staff and residents at Fairview is participating in many local bowling leagues. She is a model for younger adults who might be thinking of volunteering at Fairview or with any other worthy organization.

We want to thank both Carol and Tiffiny for their dedication and commitment in helping to enhance the quality of life for our residents at Fairview.
