ALL-PARISH PASTORAL PLANNING GATHERING APRIL 27

TH AT 7:00PM, SCHOOL CAFETERIA

On February 21st, the bulletin included a letter from Arch-

bishop Sartain and some additional information about the North Seattle Deanery Planning Process. Representa-tives from our parish and school attended a deanery meeting on February 29

th, and were presented with the

current goals of our deanery and demographic infor-mation. Please join us for an all-parish gathering about the planning process. We will share the same materials that were presented at the deanery convocation and have an opportunity for discussion with specific consideration to possibilities for our parish community. The demograph-ic information can be previewed online at www.stbens.net. Please RSVP online or by calling the parish office at 206-632-0843.

Dear Sisters and Brothers:

On April 8th, Pope Francis published his much awaited papal exhortation, Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love), on love in

our families. He does not change Church teaching in any way but encourages all pastors, really all of us, to exercise care and compassion when working with couples and families whose relationships are in need of pastoral care. In last week’s bulletin, we shared a statement by Archbishop Peter Sartain about Amoris Laetitia which he describes as a docu-ment of hope. He writes: “It reminds us of the great blessing married couples and families bestow on all of society.” And your families truly do that in every way.

In the past several weeks, I have had firsthand experience with the actions of the Holy Spirit in bringing families and cou-ples back to the Church for pastoral assistance like Pope Francis is describing. Adults are coming forward to be con-firmed in the Church; couples who were married outside the Church are coming for the sacramental blessing of their marriages; parents are bringing their children for baptism; men and women seeking to be remarried in the Church are asking for assistance with the annulment process. All of these are great sacramental moments of grace in their lives and the lives of the parish and wider Church. Let us rejoice at how God is working in our lives just as He did in the lives of the Apostles after Jesus’ resurrection and ascension into Heaven!

Fr. Bryan and I are here to assist you, your spouse, and your family with anything that needs to be set right sacramental-ly in the life of your family. Thank you for coming back to Church every Sunday and seeking the sacraments regularly. We rejoice with you in God’s grace and look forward to travelling this path of Divine Mercy and Love with you.

Many continued Easter blessings…….

Your brother in Christ, Deacon Roy

ST. GEORGE & ST. ADALBERT St. George was a soldier from Syria who was in the guard of em-peror Diocletian. Although historians feel that he did, in fact, exist, the details of his life have been obscured by the many legends that grew up around him. The Golden Legend relates the ac-count of George slaying a dragon. He is honored by Catholics, Anglicans, Lutherans, the Orthodox and even adherents of Islam. Depicted in art as a soldier on a white horse carrying a white shield with a red cross (known as St. George’s Cross), slaying a dragon. This cross is displayed on the flags of several countries including England and Georgia. St. Adalbert came from a wealthy Czech family. He became bishop of Prague before the age of thirty, but resigned because paganism persisted among the Christians there. Adalbert went to Rome and became a Benedictine monk but after 4 years, the pope sent him back to Prague to resume his role. He founded the first monastery of the Czech region, but during and uprising, all of his brothers were murdered. He went on to evangelize in Hunga-ry, Poland and Prussia where following the Christian missionar-ies, he chopped down the sacred oak trees to show the people that the trees were not supernatural. He was executed for this. He is the patron saint of Bohemia, Poland, and Prussia and is honored by both Catholics and Orthodox churches.

stewardship

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE Paul and Barnabas encountered both violent rejection and joyful acceptance of the message that they preached. We, too, may meet with mixed reactions when we use our gifts in the service of God. But, the Gospel assures us, the reward for those who follow faithfully is eternal life.

FIGHTING HUNGER IN WALLINGFORD 2016 We want to call attention to one of our St. Benedict Kindergarten-ers who had a birthday this month. He had a party and instead of gifts, he asked the attendees (others from St. Benedict) to bring a can of food for the foodbank. When you celebrate your 6th birth-day and use that celebration to selflessly give to the community, it is an outward sign of God’s love that he is learning and practicing. Thank you and blessings to our kindergarten class.
