Mass Intentions — from Fr. Joe

Every week in the Sunday Bulletin you may have noticed a name to the right of many of our regularly scheduled Masses. These “Mass Intentions” are prayers that parish members have requested for a person (such as a deceased loved one, or for someone on their birthday or anniversary) or a situation (such as for world peace). An offering is typically made of about $10.

The Mass intention will not be stated aloud, as that is not a part of the rubrics for the Eucharist. But the priest and community will know for whom or what they are to pray that day. A public prayer is a beautiful way to honor the living and remember the dead.

An ancient practice mentioned by early Christian writers, it is inscribed in the catacombs on a tomb of a bishop, Abercius who died in 180A.D. and begs for prayers for the repose of his soul. Tertullian wrote of offering a Mass for a deceased spouse around 200A.D. St. Monica, as she lay dying, asked her son St. Augustine: “One thing only I ask you, that you remember me at the altar of the Lord.”

The Canon Law of the Church says: “The Christian faithful who give an offering to apply the Mass for their intention

contribute to the good of the Church and by that offering share its concern to support its ministers and works.” (Can. 946)

This is not the same as offering money for holy things (simony). There will be regularly scheduled Masses regardless if anyone choses to attach intentions to them. It is a way to support the church and her ministers which is the duty of all Christians. Where does the money go? Since St. Anthony’s is staffed by the Conventual Franciscan Friars, this money is sent to our local headquar-ters at Mount Saint Francis and comes back to us in the form of support provided for our living expenses. That which is left in surplus supports our seminaries and missions at home and abroad.

If you wish to make a Mass offering for a loved one, please use the form provided here. Your offering may be placed in the Sunday collection basket or delivered to the Parish Office.

For over 100 years it has been a tradition here at Saint Anthony Parish to hold a summer picnic. This summer we are starting a new tradition!

The focus for our event will be on the delicious chicken dinner prepared by the Men’s Club. We will continue to have the Capital Prizes, Special Raffles and games of chance and skill, but held in air-conditioned comfort. The intention is to have nothing out of doors at the mercy of the weather. We will focus on those things that build up our sense of community and earn a little money.

We look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday, June 16 from 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

Youth Ministry News — from Stacy Gillenwater, Youth Minister

We then discussed different scenarios that could happen to each of them in everyday life (on the playground at school, classroom, home, etc.) and had groups of kiddos role play ‘positive’ solutions to potentially negative situations. We also participated in other hands-on activities.Bailey Barron spoke about How God Teaches Us To Accept & Love Everyone… How We Are All Made In His Image. This was an interactive activity involving puzzle pieces. We kept the theme very positive-minded, and also tried to keep their attention by playing various games in the gym, led by Connor Finnegan. We concluded our time together in closing prayer and then recapped our day. I was impressed by the focus and inter-action from the group, including the excellent discussions, small group activities and especially the large group settings.

7th Grade RetreatAs I reflect on Be the Light Retreat, I have many thoughts I want to share about our awesome 7th graders! They are a very fun-loving, energetic group. Our day started with daily Mass at 8:00 am, and we dove right in after that. We had a snowball fight—in August! Each person wrote down three questions and wadded their paper up like a snowball and threw them at each other—all at the same time. Afterwards, they picked a “snowball” off the ground and got into groups and answered out loud the questions they had received.

6th Grade RetreatThe theme of the Retreat was How We All Fit Together. We began with Mass at 8:00 am. We were pleasantly surprised to discover that day’s readings and homily tied in wonderfully with our theme. The Holy Spirit at work since I chose the theme for the retreat several weeks prior. Our Bible verse focus: Anyone can find the dirt in someone. Be the one who finds the Gold. ~ Proverbs 11:27Opening prayer was led by High Schooler and St. Anthony Parishioner, Hannah Hanlon. We were fortunate to have several St. Anthony graduates (current High School students) participate in the Retreat by sharing their experiences and insights with the group. For example, Brady Gentry shared his thoughts on the Golden Rule...how to treat others. Natalie Gallegos played the song, “Count on Me” by Bruno Mars, and asked the kids to share their feelings about what the song meant to them. Some of the students performed a skit about their reaction in front of the group.

Youth Ministry was thrilled to be the host of three retreats for the middle schoolers this year. This is the rst year having the 6th grade retreat, so that experience was particularly wonderful for both the 6th grade attendees and the team facilitating.

The 7th Grade Retreat also had two St. Anthony graduates (current High School students) who spoke about “being the light.” The first speaker was Natalie Gallegos. She talked passionately about how others were the light for her in a time of need. The second speaker was Brady Gentry. He talked about “being the light” in friendships and relation-ships. The students seemed to listen intently to the talks, many taking notes. Everyone had the opportunity to discuss the talks in their small groups and then shared their observa-tions to the larger group.

Some of the retreat activities focused on working together as a team, including how each of us can “be the light” for other people. We also talked about how others are often the light for us. Each student wrote affirmations that were sent home that week in their Wednesday folder.

The students had some free time, and they certainly enjoyed lunch. Of course, food is important for the soul and mind, especially to a 7th grader!

After lunch they participated in the Shoe Game, an activity that helped them learn more about their classmates.

Next came a challenging activity that involved making a lantern out of a glass jar and using wire to make the hook around the jar. Each student could add designs from differ-ent materials and spray with a clear gloss. It was great fun to watch them engage (and sometimes struggle) while using their creative energy to make the lanterns.

We split up in groups and had a Lego creation for each group that focused on communication, leadership and listening skills.

It was a wonderful day for the kids to be open minded, express themselves and spend the time together participat-ing in ‘reflective’ activities.

Parents of the 7th Graders were asked to check out the App: Sprinkle of Jesus which the kids downloaded. This is another tool for them to help strengthen their faith life.

8th Grade RetreatThe 8th Grade Retreat focused on how the students could Stay Connected. This is important as they leave St. Anthony to continue their education journey... another big chapter in their lives which we discussed throughout the day.

We began with prayer, then chatted about what “retreat” meant to each of them. Our bible verse focus was: I am the vine, you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit, apart from me you can do nothing. ~ John 15:5

Of course, we were sure to have a small ice breaker: “to get to know others better,” diving into our first talk about SELF.

Our first activity was Let’s Go Backpacking. The students were given a scenario about going on day trip, and they were told they could only take the amount of survival items that could fit into their backpack. Since space was limited, they had to really be selective on the items they could bring. They were reminded that it is definitely helpful to prepare, but sometimes in life they wouldn’t know what they would need until they reached various stages of life’s journey, like High School! They were told to reflect on what they will truly need in High School and what “will no longer fit into the backpack.”

Hannah Hanlon gave a sincere and passionate talk on “Faith.”

The final talk of the retreat was given by Natalie Gallegos who covered “Relationships.” She spoke about what it means to be a good friend to others and what characteristics are needed in a good friend.

We then played a “Lock Game” to keep them on their toes along with another fast paced interactive game.

Students learned about and were asked to download the Laudate app. A great app, it features daily readings, saints of the day, an interactive rosary, and so much more.

Youth Ministry News — from Stacy Gillenwater, Youth Minister

Each year the New Albany Deanery awards and recog-nizes special contributions throughout the deanery, and I am pleased to announce that St. Anthony of Padua had seven graduating seniors that were recognized.

Caroline Elliott from Jeffersonville High School and Katie Baker, Connor Finnegan, Natalie Gallegos, Emma Flispart, Brady Gentry and Hannah Hanlonfrom Providence High School were presented with a Certificate of Leadership, Service & Faithful Involvement.

The New Albany Deanery has had a long history of hav-ing teenagers involved in youth activities and programs above and beyond the call of duty. Because of this, the Outstanding Leadership & Service Award for Youthbegan in the late 1960’s for teenagers who have made significant contributions to their parish and/or deanery through their continued leadership and involvement.

To be considered for this award, students must demon-strate significant leadership and involvement in parish and/or deanery youth ministry programs for several years continuing through their senior year. A commitment to volunteer service in the community, taking a leadership

role in support and promotion service while being active in school and/or work, community and family is key. St. Anthony’s had two students receive this award: Natalie Gallegos and Katie Baker. Congratulations! The parish community is extremely proud of these young people for their dedication, time and service they have provided and can’t wait to see what their future holds!

Thanks to everyone on the team for your hard work planning, hosting, cleaning up and everything in between. You have been a joy to work with and I can’t wait to see what next year will hold! The team has been blessed in recent years to have four outstanding Seniors: Natalie Gallegos, Emma Flispart, Katie Baker and Hannah Hanlon who volunteered countless hours of service by providing direction and leader-ship. The team and I will definitely miss these four role models as they head off to college. Thank you so much, and may God bless each of you during the next chapter of your journey.

These are the fine young people who served on the Saint Anthony Activities Planning Team this year!
