Annual Financial Statement October, 2017 Dear Parish Family of St. Mary of the Annunciation: The pages which follow contain our annual financial statement for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2017, along with other important measurements of parish life. We are profoundly grateful to the many, many members of our parish family who so generously give of their time, talent and treasure in order that St. Mary of the Annunciation might serve the mission of Christ and his Gospel. While the financial picture certainly isn’t anyone’s favorite dimen-sion of parish life, nevertheless the reality is that our resources are an essential component of fulfilling our shared responsibilities of worship, charity, and growing disciples. We need sufficient resources in order to carry out the mission that Jesus entrusted to us. St. Mary also takes very seriously our responsibility to be transparent with the funds you so generously give. I would like to offer a few observations regarding the state of our parish finances: • It is with deep gratitude that we acknowledge the tremendous

commitment and generosity of the many parishioners who responded to the To Teach Who Christ Is capital campaign. The sacrifices of many enabled us to exceed our $2.35m pledge goal. Pledge payments are now making steady pro-gress towards the point where we will be able to retire our outstanding construction debt! During fiscal 2017, $626,000 in pledge payments were received. We will continue to place a monthly update in the Bulletin to share the details of the cam-paign’s progress.

• With regards to day-to-day finances, however, 2016-17 was

unfortunately not a good year for us. For the first time in sev-eral years, we ended the fiscal year with a deficit in parish ordinary operations. And it was a sizeable loss of $111,213. Contributing to this deficit was a drop in income of nearly $55,000, primarily from a continuing decline in Sunday collec-tions and other donations along with lower proceeds from Harvest Fest 2016. On the expense side, payroll and benefit costs were up along with maintenance and mission trip ex-penses.

• Of the factors shaping our finances, the multi-year downward

trend in Sunday and holy day collections, which provide 87% of St. Mary’s income, is of the greatest concern. Since 2014-15, our collections have declined by more than 3% and overall income declined by 5% ($75,000). During this same period, expenses have grown by 11% even with our tight controls.

• We continue to be blessed by the generous response of the

parish to the Annual Catholic Appeal. All gifts received be-yond our parish goal are returned to St. Mary. This year the “rebate” was over $124,500, providing us with a very im-portant source of funding for the functioning of our parish and ministries. Indeed, this year it was the Appeal rebate that enabled us to address our operating deficit without dipping

into savings. However, using the rebate for the deficit meant that we did not have these fund available to help with other extraordinary needs such as emergency repairs that are out-side the scope of our normal budget.

• As one of the parish’s key ministries, we provided more than

$86,000 in support for our elementary and middle school through direct financial payments along with maintenance of the school building, grounds and mechanical infrastructure. In addition, we assumed more than $20,000 in other school expenses. The financial and educational operations of the school are administered by the Archdiocesan Office of Catho-lic Schools and are reported on the financial statement of the Catholic Consortium of Lake County (now called “Frassati Catholic Academy”).

• Statistically speaking, our giving patterns are not robust and

they eroded a bit this past year. We recognize no discernable income from 28% of our registered households. Another 26% of our families average $2.32 per week. Nearly 66% of our registered households contribute less than $8 per week. Put another way, 78% of parish families (1160 households) pro-duce only 25% of our Sunday income. At the other end of the giving spectrum, 2% (25 households) provide 19% of our in-come. While 72% of parish households contribute at some point during the year, only 27% give on a weekly/monthly basis.

• To sustain and grow St. Mary’s programs, ministries and char-

itable efforts, we need to see our financial foundation become more robust. Given the trends of recent years, it is becoming even more difficult to sustain our current ministries and pro-grams. Therefore, we sincerely ask you to prayerfully deter-mine how you can increase your financial support for the par-ish. If you aren’t currently giving, we ask that you please start. If you only give now and then, please increase your amount and/or frequency. Please consider signing up for online giving through our parish website to make regular Sunday giving easier. Even small steps like an additional $10 or $15 per week would greatly help to provide St. Mary with the financial resources needed to sustain and grow our Gospel works of charity, formation and worship.

Thank you again for your generosity and sacrifices. All that you and I have is indeed a gift from God: Our talents, our health, our good fortune to live in 21st century America. Out of gratitude for our many blessings, let us return to Him a share of what we have received. May we continue to grow as stewards of all the gifts and blessings the Lord has given us. Through our efforts and sacrific-es, may St. Mary of the Annunciation and the work of the Gospel may flourish today and for decades to come! Yours in Christ,

Deacon Howard W. Fischer Director of Parish Operations

Notes on Assets and Liabilities

1. The Abundant Hope $10m capital campaign raised $1.99 million from 2008-2014. $820,000 was used per plan to service existing debt. The balance remains in a separate, dedicated bank account pending our ability to implement the campaign vision.

2. Restricted funds are donated with a designated use and may only be used for that purpose. Unrestricted funds may be used for general operations.

3. Home School Association accounts and gift card assets were transferred to the Catholic Consortium of Lake County/Frassati Catholic Academy.

4. Payments to the Archdiocese for the Church Building Construction Loan have been halted for several years. Debt repayment has been included in the To Teach Who Christ Is capital campaign.

5. Certain unpaid obligations that carry over into the next fiscal year (including prepaid REP fees for 2017-18) are listed as liabilities.

Notes from the Financial Statement: 1. As one of our vital ministries, the parish provides direct financial support for our school along with providing maintenance of the

school building and mechanicals. The operations of St. Mary School are administered by the Archdiocesan Office of Catholic Schools and are reported on the financial statement of the Catholic Consortium of Lake County (now called Frassati Catholic Academy).

2. Miscellaneous income includes donations not received through offertory collections as well as gifts received specifically for adult formation, Youth Ministry, teen mission trips, etc. Income from mass stipends, vigil candles, pamphlet sales, bank interest, etc., is also recorded in this account. Miscellaneous expense includes hospitality, ministry formation, Youth Ministry activities and mission trips, etc.

3. Payments to the Archdiocese for the Church Building Construction Loan have been halted, although we must still accrue the interest due on our financial statement. As of the end of FY2017, $1.575 million in interest and principal is past due. However, debt repayment has been included in the To Teach Who Christ Is capital campaign.

4. The FY2017 "Other" Extraordinary Expense reflects the transfer of Home School Association accounts from the parish to the Catholic Consortium of Lake County (now called Frassati Catholic Academy).

5. FY2017 Capital Improvements Expense was for the patching of potholes and deteriorated sections of the school and church parking lots that were safety hazards.

The Jesus Question by

Matthew Kelly

Jesus was walking along the road one day with his disciples when he asked them two questions. The first question: "Who do people say that I am?" The second question: "Who do you say that I am?" Matthew Kelly calls this second question THE JESUS QUESTION. How you answer this question will affect every aspect of your life. In this presen-tation, beloved Catholic author and speaker Matthew Kelly encourages listeners to rediscover the real Jesus by presenting a life-changing habit that will help us all answer THE JESUS QUESTION.

I-Oka, Mount Prospect Check in at 8:30 am ; Training from 9 am until noon Presenter: Maureen Evers, Pastoral Associate at St. Mary of Vernon Lectors have a critical role in the celebration of the Mass. This training will provide the skills and self-confidence needed for those who wish to become lectors in their own parish or for any lector who would like a “refresher” course. Register at: www.vic1chicago.org. A follow up session will take place in your parish that will include any particular practices for your parish. Questions? F isch–ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer

In today’s Gospel, Jesus’ enemies once again try to trap and discredit him when they ask about the paying of taxes to their

hated Roman oppressors. His answer is more than a clever escape. Jesus says that the coin should be returned to the person whose image it displays. We focus on this half of his response, but the sec-ond half is the real kicker – Jesus also says that God should be given those things that bear his imprint. Since, as Genesis tells us, each of

us is made in the image and likeness of God, Jesus is really saying that must offer our whole selves to God. There is nothing in life that we can withhold from him. Jesus’ answer has nothing to do with the separation of Church and State, a concept that was unknown in his time, but it has everything to do with deciding where our loyalties rest. If God is truly the center of our lives, it will be no problem to give our other obligations their proper due. Too often Jesus’ response has been misunderstood and twisted to mean that faith and politics should never be allowed to mix. This was not his intent and such a conclusion is actually counter to the mission of Christ. The Gospel isn’t just about changing our personal lives; it’s also about changing the whole world!!! We have many “Caesars” in our lives demanding our loyalty – the government, our occupations, and the culture around us, to name but a few. It often seems that we are giving one of life’s “Caesars” more than his due and giving God only that which is left over. And so Jesus asks of us the same question that he asks about the coin: Whose image do we bear, God’s or Caesar’s? On a different note… Last week’s Gospel parable pointed out that we have been invited to God’s sumptuous feast, yet we often resist the invitation. Thus, one church planned a “No Excuse Sunday,” humor-ously announcing: 1 - Cots will be placed in the vestibule for those who say, “Sunday is my only day for sleeping late.”

2 - Eye drops will be available for those whose eyes are tired from watch-ing TV too late on Saturday night.

3 - We will have steel helmets for those who believe the roof will cave in if they show up for church.

4 - Blankets will be furnished for those who complain that the church is too cold. Fans will be on hand for those who say that the church is too hot.

5 - We will have hearing aids for those who say that the priests do not talk loud enough. There will be cotton for those who say that the priests talk too loud.

6 - Scorecards will be available for those who wish to count the hypocrites.

7 - We guarantee that some relatives will be present for those who like to go visiting on Sunday.

8 - There will be TV dinners available for those who claim they cannot go to church and cook dinner too.

9 - One section of the church will have some trees and grass for those who see God in nature, especially on the golf course.

10 - The sanctuary will be decorated with 30 Christmas poinsettias and 30 Easter lilies to create a familiar environment for those who have never seen the church without them.

May you and I shed whatever excuses we use to hold God’s invitation at arm’s length. If you wish to contact me, just leave a note in the parish o-ffice or send an email to [email protected].

October 9, 2017 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On behalf of our brothers and sisters who have been severely af-fected by Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma, it is my wish to sincerely thank you for the tremendous outpouring of support you have shown them during this challenging time. Banding together to answer the cry of those in need, the Archdiocese of Chicago com-munity has seamlessly partnered with Catholic Charities USA, local parishes, and schools to bring financial, physical, and spiritual aid to those who have lost so much in the Gulf Coast. The September 9-10 collection raised more than $600,000 for these efforts, a true testament to the compassion of the people of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Now it is time once again to stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters affected by natural disasters that have oc-curred over the last few weeks, including Hurricane Maria and the earthquakes in Mexico. As requested by the USCCB, all parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago are invited to take up a second collec-tion at all Masses on the weekend October 28-29. Proceeds from this special collection will support humanitarian and recovery efforts in Mexico and Puerto Rico. There is also an option for your parish to donate directly to these efforts. To donate, please visit http://pvm.archchicago.org/hurricane or mail contributions to the following address. Please make all checks payable to the Natural Disaster Emergency Appeal. ATTN: Natural Disaster Emergency Appeal 3525 South Lake Park Avenue Chicago, IL 60653 It is my prayer that we continue to support those affected by these natural disasters through both prayer and action. With every good wish, I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich Archbishop of Chicago

Remembering Our Dead in November The Remembrance Table

On the west wall of the church, near the devotional shrine, we will have a memorial area with a remembrance table. The Book of the Dead will be placed on the table and you may write in it the names of deceased persons you would like to be remembered. Surrounding the Book of the Dead will be framed photos of loved ones who have died. Beginning the first weekend of November you are invited to bring a photo of your loved one and place it on one of the tables. The photos will be on display for the month of November. Please remem-ber to place a note on the back of the frame with your name and phone number. At the end of the month you will be asked to pick up the photo and take it back home with you. Our hope in having this special memorial area and is to as-sure you that your loved one and your family are loved and not forgot-ten here in the community of St. Mary of the Annunciation.

Children and Grief Grief is a personal experience, which no two people experience in exactly the same way. Grief occurs not only after a death, but with each loss or change. What you can do to help children deal with grief: • Listen. • Try to keep routines as consistent as possible. • Tell children what to expect. • Respect the individual child's uniqueness. • Encourage those who interact with the children to use the proper words, such

as "dead" or "dying" And avoid euphemisms, such as the deceased is "sleeping" or on a "long trip."

• Keep explanations short, simple and truthful. Repeat them as many times as needed.

• Be honest. • Remember that different people have different reactions to death. • Provide opportunities for children to express themselves. • Allow children to cry. • Cry and laugh with children. • Make the child feel special and important. If you would like more information about supporting children who are grieving, please contact Diane Mulroe in the parish office.

We can respond to Pope Francis’ Call to Action by following suggested ways to make a difference. This week’s tip to Care for our Common Home is: Do a home energy audit. You will be able to identify where you can patch air leaks, switch out light bulbs, or improve insulation. You’ll conserve energy, reduce emissions that contribute to climate change, and save money! Check out the Archdiocese website: pvmarchchicago.org/creation

Ministers of Care bring communion and prayers to those who are homebound. If you or someone you know would like to receive a visit, please call the office.

Every day 6,200 children die of starvation... But YOU can make a difference by joining the Human Concerns and Parish Life Com-missions in the 2nd annual service project at: FEED MY STARVING CHILDREN

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month What is domestic violence? Domestic violence is any kind of behavior that a person uses, or threatens to use, to control an intimate partner. The two key elements are threat and control. Domestic violence can take various forms: Physical – Violent actions such as hitting, beating, pushing, and kicking. In many cases physical abuse becomes more frequent and severe over time. Sexual – Includes any sexual acts that are forced on one partner by the other Psychological – Includes a wide range of behaviors such as intimidation, isolating the victim from friends and family, control-ling where the victim goes, making the victim feel guilty or crazy, and making unreasonable demands Emotional – Undermining an individual’s self-esteem, constant criticism, insults, put-downs, and name-calling Economic – Examples include limiting the victim’s access to family income, preventing the victim from working or forcing the victim to work, destroying the victim’s property, and making all the financial decisions Characteristics of victims • Female, although men can also experience domestic violence • Younger, often in their 20’s and 30’s • More likely to be dating or cohabiting than married. Nearly half live in households with children Why do women stay? Women often stay with their abusers because of fear. They are afraid that the abuser will become more violent if they try to leave. Some fear that they will lose their children. Many believe that they cannot make it on their own. Some abused women believe that the abuse is their fault. They think that they can stop the abuse if they just act differently. Some cannot admit that they are abused women. Others feel pressured to stay in the relationship. They may feel cut off from social support and resources. Abused women often feel that they are alone, and have nowhere to turn for help. Why do men batter? Abusive men come from all walks of life. They may be successful in their career and respected in their church and community. Abusive men often share some common characteristics. They tend to be jealous, possessive and easily angered. Many abusive men believe that women are inferior. They believe that men are meant to dominate and con-trol women. Typically, abusive men deny that the abuse is happening or they minimize it. They may blame their partner for the abuse, saying, “You made me do this.” Alcohol and drugs are often associated with domestic vio-lence but they do not cause it. An abusive man who drinks or uses drugs has two different problems: substance abuse and violence. Both must be treated.

For abused women WHERE TO FIND HELP: • Believe that you are not alone. Help is available for you and your children. • Talk in confidence to someone you trust: a relative, friend, pastor or family doctor If you choose to stay in the situation, set up a plan of action to ensure your safety. This includes hiding a car key, per-sonal documents, and some money in a safe place and locating somewhere to go in an emergency. The National Domestic Violence Hotline provides crisis intervention and referrals to local sources of help in all 50 states. Call 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or 1-800-787-3224 (TTY). For men who abuse: • Admit that the abuse is your problem, not your partner’s. Begin to believe that you can change your behavior if you choose to do so. • Be willing to reach out for help. Talk to someone you trust who can help you to evaluate the situation. Contact Catholic Charities or other church or community agencies for the name of a program for offenders. Call the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233) for information about where to find help.

St. Mary of the Annunciation Domestic Violence Ministry Mission Statement: “We are called by Christ to serve our community by raising awareness, working for the prevention of abuse and

violence and by compassionately supporting victims with resources to find help.”

St. Mary’s Domestic Violence Ministry meets once each month to plan awareness and prevention programs. Join us on the 2nd Monday of each month at 7:00pm. If you would like more info, please contact Diane Mulroe in the parish office.
