Padres, Sanchez walk off against Giants

Dennis Lin

Hector Sanchez found himself in an unexpected position Saturday night. A few swings

during batting practice had revealed that starting catcher Austin Hedges was less than

100 percent. Sanchez replaced Hedges in the lineup, beginning a game behind the

plate for just the fourth time this season. A procession of familiar faces cycled through

the batter’s box.

Nearly three hours later, Sanchez found himself being mobbed by his current

teammates. The Padres’ backup catcher had delivered a 5-3 victory over the San

Francisco Giants, crushing his former club with a two-run, walk-off homer at Petco

Park.

“Sometimes,” Padres right-hander Jhoulys Chacin said, “you have to be ready when

the opportunity comes. I think he was.”

Sanchez’s first-pitch swat off Steven Okert reached the top deck of the Western Metal

building and upstaged the return of Giants ace Madison Bumgarner, who came off the

disabled list to log seven innings. The switch-hitting Sanchez went 0-for-3 with the

left-hander on the mound.

In the ninth, Bumgarner could only watch as Sanchez launched his seventh hit of the

season, and his first from the right-handed side of the plate. His average rose from

.143 to .163.

“You look at his stat line, you wouldn’t come away thinking, ‘Well, how is that guy

winning baseball games for us?’” Padres manager Andy Green said. “But he’s done it

over and over.”

On April 30 in San Francisco, Sanchez socked a two-run, pinch-hit homer, forcing

extras in an eventual victory for the Padres. On June 24, Sanchez, recently returned

from a lengthy DL stint, electrified Petco Park with a pinch-hit, go-ahead home run

against Detroit.

Though Saturday’s blast came in a starting capacity, another trend continued. In his

career against the Giants, Sanchez is now 6-for-12 with three home runs and eight

RBIs.

“No matter who’s the other team, I just try to help my team, doing what I have to do

to win,” said Sanchez, who spent parts of five seasons and celebrated two World

Series titles with the Giants.

Now in his second season with San Diego, the 27-year-old is a sparingly used yet

noticeable presence. Primarily a pinch-hitter, he doubles as a third catcher and a

reserve first baseman.

“I know my job,” Sanchez said. “I have to be ready every single day. I have to come to

the ballpark, get ready, put myself in the situation where, if something happens, I

have to be ready.”

Said Green: “He’s loud in the dugout, he’s got life all the time. … Some guys, they sit

on the bench, they get stale, they just sit there. He’s bouncing all over the dugout,

talking non-stop.

“He’s been such a good teammate, and he’s had such limited opportunity to play.

When you see a guy throw a guy out at second base (Sanchez did in the seventh),

block the ball really well and then step up and hit the home run after struggling from

the right side all day against Bumgarner, it’s fun to see him to do that.”

The home dugout had been relatively somber early the game. Chacin struggled with

his control, yielding two runs in the first inning and throwing 58 pitches before the

third. Bumgarner, seemingly unaffected by a long layoff, retired the first seven batters

he faced.

Left fielder Matt Szczur, another Padres reserve making a start, broke the pattern in

the bottom of the third, cranking a solo home run to left.

Right fielder Jabari Blash, who had been recalled from Triple-A El Paso on Friday,

deposited a two-run homer beyond the centerfield fence in the fourth. The Padres

suddenly had a 3-2 lead.

Chacin, who by then had regained his bearings, carried that advantage into the

sixth. Joe Panik led off the inning with a game-tying homer. Chacin retired the next

three batters, finishing with a quality start.

“First inning was rough, about as rough as I’ve seen him all year,” Green said.

“Fortunate to get through that. But it’s a credit to him, to see him settle down, to

make good pitches for most of the rest of the ballgame. You talk about six innings,

three runs … that’s a really good response.”

The score remained deadlocked into the ninth. Blash opened the bottom of the inning

with a single. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Up came Sanchez, swinging

at the first pitch, delivering once again.

Padres' Austin Hedges scratched for precautionary reasons

Dennis Lin

Citing precautionary reasons, the Padres scratched catcher Austin Hedges from their

lineup about two and a half hours before Saturday’s game against the San Francisco

Giants. Hedges, who had his bell rung by a foul ball Friday, did not feel “quite right”

while taking batting practice, manager Andy Green said.

“They don’t think it’s a concussion,” Green said. “They think it’s just a little hazy right

now, for lack of a better term. And it was not worth him trying to go out and catch

today.”

Hector Sanchez replaced Hedges in the lineup. The reserve catcher hit a walk-off

home run in the ninth.

In the seventh inning Friday, San Francisco’s Brandon Belt fouled a ball directly back

and into Hedges’ face mask, jarring the catcher. Hedges rose from his crouch and

removed his mask as a team trainer and Green went onto the field. After a brief

conference, Hedges remained in and finished the game.

“He’s got one of those concussion masks that supposedly absorbs some of the blow,”

Green said after Friday’s game game. “That was about as loud as I’ve heard somebody

get hit, but he’s feeling fine, to my knowledge.”

Hedges, 24, has started 67 of the Padres’ first 90 games. He will be re-evaluated

Sunday morning.

Hot-corner debut With Giants left-hander Madison Bumgarner returning from the disabled list

Saturday, Jose Pirela received his first major league start at third base. Matt Szczur,

another right-handed hitter, started in Pirela’s typical spot in left field.

Pirela, who is batting .282 with four home runs since being called up last month, has

made 36 minor league appearances at third, including three last season with Triple-A

El Paso.

“It’s just a way to get another right-handed bat in the lineup against Bumgarner,”

Green said. “The way (second baseman) Carlos Asuaje’s been swinging, the way he

competes in the box, we chose to leave him out there and give Pirela the day at third.”

Notable

• Outfielder Travis Jankowski (right foot fracture) will begin what Green called a

“relatively lengthy” rehab assignment Saturday night, starting for AZL Padres 2.

Jankowski hasn’t played in a game since April 22.

• Left-hander Robbie Erlin, who underwent Tommy John surgery last May, is

playing long toss but not close to a rehab assignment. “He’s had some stops and

starts where he’s been on the mound and been backed off and back on the

mound and backed off,” Green said. “Just with the rehab process with Tommy

John, you don’t know how long it’s going to take for some guys.”

• Right-hander Kirby Yates and his wife, Ashlee, welcomed their first child,

daughter Oaklee, on Friday. Yates is expected to return from paternity leave on

Monday.

Cal Quantrill makes Double-A debut

Jeff Sanders

Josh Naylor hit his first home run in his fourth game at Double-A San Antonio. It did

not arrive in time to help Cal Quantrill exit his first Texas League start with a win but

it ensured he would not lose.

Quantrill allowed four runs in 5 1/3 innings in his Missions debut, Naylor hit a two-

run homer in the seventh inning and San Antonio beat host Frisco, 9-7, in 13 innings

on Saturday night.

Nick Torres doubled in the go-ahead run, one of four hits to lift his average to .263.

He also drove in three runs, while Ty France (.293) drove in two on four hits.

Naylor (.263) and Nick Schulz (.257) each had three hits.

The eighth overall selection last year, Quantrill (6.75) surrendered 10 hits and two

walks despite starting the game with three scoreless innings.

Cahill wraps up series against Giants

By Nathan Ruiz / MLB.com

Concluding a brief homestand, Trevor Cahill and the Padres face Jeff Samardzija and the Giants on

Sunday to complete the teams' series at Petco Park.

Samardzija pitched against San Diego in late April, going seven innings, striking out five Padres and

allowing three runs (two earned). Samardzija has pitched effectively since the calendar turned to June,

lasting at least six innings in seven straight starts.

Cahill has started against the Giants the third-most times of any team in his career, but he

hasn't started against them since consecutive outings in April 2014 as a member of the D-

backs. Pitching in relief with the Cubs last season, he threw 4 1/3 scoreless innings against San

Francisco in three appearances.

Making his third start since coming off the disabled list, Cahill should be extended enough to

pitch with few limitations. He allowed three home runs in five innings against the Phillies in his

final start before the All-Star break.

Things to know about this game

• Samardzija hasn't walked a right-handed batter since June 21, a streak that spans 53 plate

appearances.

• Padres catcher Austin Hedges was scratched from Saturday's lineup for precautionary

reasons and was replaced by former Giant Hector Sanchez. Hedges' 13 home runs led National

League catchers entering Saturday's game.

• The Padres will be without right-hander Kirby Yates for Sunday's finale. Yates and his wife,

Ashlee, had a daughter, Oaklee, on Friday. Yates has a 1.93 ERA in 30 games with San Diego

and is expected to rejoin the team Monday.

Sanchez hits walk-off shot to beat former

team

By AJ Cassavell and Chris Haft / MLB.com

SAN DIEGO -- For the most part, Madison Bumgarner was sharp over seven frames in his first

start back from the disabled list Saturday night. But it was his former batterymate who stole the

show and spoiled Bumgarner's return.

Hector Sanchez, a late entry into the Padres' lineup after starting catcher Austin Hedges was

scratched, launched a walk-off two-run blast off the third deck of the Western Metal Building,

sending the Padres to a 5-3 victory.

"I know my job," said Sanchez, whose playing time has been limited this season. "I have to be

ready every single day. I have to come to the ballpark, get ready, put myself in the situation

where if something happens I have to be ready."

It was the first career walk-off homer for Sanchez, who spent five seasons with the Giants from

2011-15 -- and has tormented them ever since. He capitalized on a poorly placed fastball from

Giants reliever Steven Okert for his seventh homer since joining the Padres last May. Three of

those have come against San Francisco, including a game-tying blast in the ninth inning earlier

this season.

Before Sanchez's heroics, Bumgarner allowed three runs on four hits, while striking out five in

his first start since he injured his shoulder in a dirt-bike accident April 20. He opened the game

by striking out the side, but surrendered a solo homer to Matt Szczur in the third and a two-run

shot to Jabari Blash in the fourth. The Padres didn't do much damage otherwise.

"I felt pretty good the whole time," said Bumgarner, the four-time All-Star and 2014 postseason

hero. "I gradually built up to it. I was making my pitches from the first inning."

Padres starter Jhoulys Chacin withstood a rocky first couple of frames, before settling in for six

innings of three-run ball. Joe Panik took Chacin deep in the sixth, tying the game at 3, but the

veteran right-hander was otherwise sharp as the game progressed.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED

Blashtoff: Blash was red-hot at Triple-A El Paso before his callup Friday night. That's carried

over at the big league level. He launched a Statcast-projected 427-foot blast to straightaway

center field against Bumgarner, putting the Padres on top in the fourth after their sluggish start.

Blash, who is 4-for-8 with a walk since his return, also singled to spark the ninth-inning rally.

"The swing looks shorter, more compact, gets to pitches a little bit better," said Padres manager

Andy Green. "He's got tremendous power. I've always wanted to see him get a consistent

opportunity here, and now his swing ... warrants that kind of opportunity."

Settling down: Fifty-seven pitches into his outing, Chacin had recorded just five outs, and the

Giants were threatening to blow the game open. With the bases loaded in the second, Buster

Posey sent a deep fly to left, but Szczur tracked it down a couple of steps in front of the wall. It

marked an early turning point, as Chacin found a bit of a groove from there.

"We're an inch away from having a six-run lead there," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.

Chacin allowed a cue-shot double to Brandon Crawford to start the third, but held the Giants

hitless otherwise over the next three frames.

"After Posey hit the fly ball in the second inning, deep to left, that's when I started thinking you

have to settle down and start making good pitches," Chacin said. "That's when I turned the

page."

will be re-evaluated Sunday morning.

WHAT'S NEXT

Giants: Jeff Samardzija, who has done virtually everything he can to succeed yet owns a 4-10

record, will start Sunday's series finale beginning at 1:40 p.m. PT. The right-hander has

sustained astounding command, striking out 127 while walking 14 in 118 innings.

Padres: After an injury-plagued first half, Trevor Cahill has finally put his shoulder and back

issues behind him. He'll take the ball for Sunday's series finale with first pitch slated for 1:40

Szczur makes most of starting chance

By Nathan Ruiz / MLB.com

SAN DIEGO -- Despite limited playing time during his Padres tenure, Matt Szczurhas remained

ready for any opportunity. Saturday night, he seized one with a two-strike swing

against Madison Bumgarner.

Bumgarner, the Giants' dynamic left-hander and 2014 World Series MVP, cruised early in his

first start since being sidelined with a shoulder sprain in late April, retiring the first seven Padres

he faced in the Padres' 5-3 victory. Szczur seemed destined to make it eight after falling behind

1-2, but he fouled off successive pitches and took a ball before pounding a Bumgarner curveball

out to left-center field.

The 414-foot homer, Szczur's second-longest since Statcast™ was introduced in 2015, cut a

two-run deficit in half and provided the first run of San Diego's comeback.

"I was just battling," Szczur said. "[Bumgarner's] fun to compete against because you know no

matter how he's feeling or how he's doing, he's going to compete. It's a fun at-bat."

Acquired from the Cubs on May 8, Szczur has most often served as a late-inning defensive

replacement in the outfield. Saturday was only Szczur's seventh start since June 9, his last

multi-hit performance before doing so in the first half's finale against Philadelphia.

After beating Bumgarner with the long game, Szczur used his short game to achieve his second

straight two-hit game. He noticed third baseman Eduardo Nunez playing back in the fifth and

dropped down a bunt single.

"He's been working so hard," manager Andy Green said. "... He's put a ton of effort into trying to

find his swing as he's kind of battled himself since he's been here. But he's a tremendous

teammate. People thrive just being around him."

Szczur pestered Bumgarner again in the seventh, drawing a walk off the San Francisco ace. Not

only was it Szczur's first time reaching base three times in a game since June 6, but he also

matched the number of times he'd reached against Bumgarner in 11 plate appearances coming

into Saturday.

Page 15: Padres Press Clips - MLB.comJul 16, 2017  · Padres Press Clips Sunday, July 16, 2017 Article Source Author Page Padres, Sanchez walk off against Giants UT San Diego Lin 2 Padres’

15

His irregular playing time aside, Szczur has continued to work hard as a member of the Padres,

enjoying his time with the organization. He said the staff has always been willing to assist him,

whether that's through batting practice or pregame outfield work. Szczur has worked on a

consistent, repeatable swing, hitting coach Alan Zinter said.

Szczur's performance against Bumgarner raised his average with San Diego from .182 to .203.

Although his overall numbers are below where he would prefer, Szczur proved he has the ability

to take advantage of his opportunities.

"He doesn't sit there and complain about playing time," Zinter said. "He's always ready. He

comes in here and works just as hard as anybody on this team, and he's ready for that

opportunity. He doesn't get down. He's always positive. He's always on the fly, ready to go. You

can call on him at any time, and you're going to get the best of Szczur.

"It's nice for him to get in the game and get in some rhythm and get a couple of big hits for us."

Szczur hopes Saturday's outing means there are more to come.

"It just helps your confidence," he said. "When you go in the box and you know you had a good

day the day before, you're feeling confident and like you can compete and do well against

whoever's on the mound."

Sanchez making most of chances for Padres

By Bill Center / San Diego Padres

Hector Sanchez is making the most of his limited hits for the Padres this season.

The 27-year-old reserve catcher has seven hits.

Four of those have been homers.

Three of those homers were pinch-hit shots, two of which have led to Padres wins.

Then there was Saturday night's two-run walk-off homer against his former San Francisco Giants

teammates -- marking the second time this season that one of his homers helped the Padres defeat the

Giants.

Three of Sanchez's four homers were instrumental in Padres wins. A quick recap of Sanchez's 2017

homers:

April 30: His two-run pinch-hit shot in the top of the ninth off Giants closer Mark Melancon allows the

Padres to avoid the shutout and tie the game at 2-2. The Padres win 5-2 in 12 innings.

June 24: His two-run, pinch-hit homer in the bottom of the eighth erases a one-run deficit and

gives the Padres a 4-3 lead over Detroit. The Padres score three more runs in the inning and

win 7-3.

June 30: His third pinch-hit homer of the season is a two-run shot against the Dodgers. But the

Dodgers are far ahead and win 10-4.

Saturday night: Sanchez made only his fourth start of the season behind the plate when

regular Austin Hedges was a late scratch. His two-run, walk-off blast in the ninth gives the

Padres a 5-3 win over the Giants.

On the season, Sanchez, who has twice been on the disabled list in addition to spending time

with Triple-A El Paso, is hitting just .163 (7-for-43). But he has four homers and 10 RBIs and is

4-for-19 with three homers and eight RBIs as a pinch-hitter.

Sanchez is now 6-for-12 with three homers and eight RBIs in seven career games against San

Francisco, his former team.

And Saturday's walk-off homer off Steven Okert was the switch-hitter's first hit against a left-

handed pitcher in eight at-bats this season. He had been 0-for-7 with four strikeouts.

Noteworthy

• RF Jabari Blash is 4-for-8 with a double and Saturday night's two-run homer off Madison

Bumgarner in his first two games since returning from Triple-A El Paso as a sub for the

injured Hunter Renfroe (neck). Blash has three RBIs and three runs scored with a walk in the

two games. Up until his return, Blash had only three hits in his first 29 at-bats as a Padre this

season.

• 2B Carlos Asuaje was 1-for-3 with a run scored Saturday night to extend his career-best hitting

streak to a seventh straight game. He is 9-for-26 during the streak with three walks for a .414

on-base percentage.

• OF Matt Szczur is 4-for-6 with a walk in his last two starts after going 2-for-26 between June

10 and July 8. His solo homer in the third inning Saturday night was the Padres' first hit off

Bumgarner.

• RHP Jhoulys Chacin allowed three runs on six hits in six innings against the Giants Saturday

night. It was his seventh quality start in his last nine outings and his team-leading 11th on the

season. In 10 starts at Petco Park this season, Chacin is 5-2 with a 1.94 home earned run

average -- still the best home ERA mark in the National League.

Padres beat Giants; spoil Madison Bumgarner's return

Associated Press

SAN DIEGO -- Madison Bumgarner was back on the mound after three long months away. The San Francisco Giants left-hander was making his first start since April 19 at Kansas City. The next day, he wiped out while riding a dirt bike on a day off in Denver, spraining the AC joint in his left shoulder and suffering bruised ribs. He pitched seven innings Saturday night and left with the score tied at 3 after allowing four hits, including home runs to Matt Szczur and Jabari Blash, while striking out five and walking two. The San Diego Padres won the game 5-3 on Hector Sanchez's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth. "I felt pretty good the whole time and we kind of gradually built up to it," said Bumgarner, who threw 102 pitches. "I knew I wasn't going to be able to get much over 100, or they wouldn't have let me anyway. So yeah if you can get out there for seven, I'll take that any time."

The lefty retired the first seven batters before Szczur homered to left, his third. Bumgarner walked Carlos Asuaje leading off the fourth and retired the next two batters before Blash drove a two-run shot an estimated 424 feet to straightaway center field for a 3-2 lead. It was his second. "Obviously I'd like to be able to have a redo on a couple pitches, but they weren't bad pitches," Bumgarner said. "Obviously now looking back they were probably the wrong pitches, but I mean I felt pretty good for the most part for especially the first time back in three months or whatever."

The ace said he "tried to be all business about it. Any negativity is just going to make it worse, so you've got to try to find a way to make the best out of whatever situation you're in."

Sanchez, the backup catcher, found out during batting practice Saturday that he would start in place of Austin Hedges, who took a foul ball off his mask the night before. Several hours later, after going 0 for 3 against Bumgarner, Sanchez hit a no-doubt, two-run homer off Steven Okert to lift the Padres. Four of the switch-hitting Sanchez's seven hits this year are homers -- three as a pinch-hitter and then Saturday night's walk-off.

"It's fun seeing him succeed," manager Andy Green said. "He's been such a good teammate and he's had such limited opportunity to play. He's been big for us. He's been worth like probably three wins. "You look at this stat line, you wouldn't come away thinking, `How is that guy winning baseball games for you?' He's done it over and over," Green said.

Sanchez came in hitting .154 in 39 at-bats in just 29 games.

"It's not an easy job, but I know my job. I have to be ready every single day," Sanchez said. "If something happens, I have to be ready."

Blash started the winning rally when he singled leading off the ninth against Cory Gearrin (3-3) and advanced on Erick Aybar's sacrifice bunt against Okert. Sanchez said he was looking to hit a line drive to bring in Blash. Instead, he drove a fastball an estimated 407 feet off the Western Metal Supply Co. Building in the left-field corner for the win.

"It's great," Sanchez said. "To get the victory for my teammates and my team, that's more important for me. That's all that matters."

Padres starter Jhoulys Chacin was happy for Sanchez. "He wasn't expecting to play and he got the huge hit," Chacin said. "I know how much he wants to play but sometimes you have to be ready when the opportunities come, and he was."

Brandon Maurer (1-4) pitched the ninth for the win. The Giants lost for the sixth time in eight games. It was San Diego's sixth win in nine games.

Joe Panik tied it at 3 with a solo shot to right leading off the sixth, his sixth. Chacin gave up three runs and six hits in six innings, struck out four and walked four.

He labored through a 34-pitch first inning, when he loaded the bases on two walks and a single before allowing a two-run single by Hunter Pence.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Giants: Johnny Cueto was placed on the 10-day DL with blisters on the tips of his right thumb, forefinger

and middle finger that forced him out of Friday night's game after four innings. With Cueto expected to

miss at least two starts, Matt Cain moves back into the rotation.

Padres: Green said Hedges "didn't feel quite right" during batting practice. The Padres don't think Hedges

has a concussion.

are tied for the most in the NL.

Padres: RHP Trevor Cahill (3-3, 3.38 ERA) is scheduled to make his third start since coming off the DL
