Benches clear after altercation between

Dodgers' Dave Roberts and Padres' Andy

Green Dennis Lin

Two normally mild-mannered managers were at the center of a contentious scene Friday at Petco Park. Both the Padres’ Andy Green and the Dodgers’ Dave Robertsearned early ejections after a benches-clearing altercation in Los Angeles’ 10-4 victory.

The fracas stemmed from the bottom of the first. Dodgers starter Alex Wood yelled at Jose Pirela, believing the Padres left fielder was signaling batter Manuel Margot from second base. Home plate umpire Greg Gibson issued warnings to both dugouts. Before the start of the second inning, a brief meeting near home plate ended with Roberts going after Green.

Both managers had approached Gibson for an explanation. As Green later recalled, he had disagreed with the officiating crew’s decision not to eject Wood. He shared his view and, as he began walking back to his dugout, delivered some parting criticism of Wood. Roberts reacted.

The Dodgers manager charged toward Green and bumped him. Both benches and bullpens spilled onto the field, with players and coaches getting between the skippers. Roberts had to be restrained. Amid the commotion, he pointed at Green and said, “You and me.”

Soon, order was restored. Neither side, however, budged after the game.

“I think the No. 1 thing I took issue with was the threat on the mound from their pitcher to our player that he was going to drill him, with some expletives mixed in,” Green said. “It’s unacceptable, and I don’t think there’s anyone on our club that’s going to tolerate that and just yield to that.

Page 3: Padres Press Clips - Major League Baseballmlb.mlb.com/documents/9/2/6/239859926/Padres_Press_Clips_07.01.17_x837n4v6.pdfJul 01, 2017  · outfielder Franchy Cordero to El Paso. Cordero

“I voiced how I felt about what their player had done … and I said it probably dripping with a little bit of sarcasm.”

Green and Roberts did not specify what had incensed Roberts, but the Dodgers manager referenced “pointed comments.”

“I was just wanting to get his attention,” Roberts said. “I probably got too emotional, but I think we all care about our players. When things are said about your player, I think you get a little bit more sensitive to it.”

The game finished without further incident. It wasn’t much of a contest.

Dodgers catcher Austin Barnes, who had launched a grand slam off Clayton Richard in the top of the first, homered again in the sixth. Richard would be tagged for a season-high seven runs over 4 1/3 innings. Padres catcher Hector Sanchez mashed a pinch-hit, two-run blast in the ninth, merely delaying the end of a rout.

The postgame commentary contained more of a back-and-forth.

Wood denied threatening Pirela.

“I just thought they were giving location,” the pitcher said. “I’ll never know if they were or they weren’t. … I didn’t mean to overreact if that’s how it came across. I just got caught up in the moment.”

Gibson and second base umpire D.J. Reyburn offered a different version of events.

“D.J. overheard him say, ‘If you keep giving away location, I’m going to (expletive) drill you,’” Gibson told a pool reporter. “I went to the mound to change balls out. I’ve known Alex for a while. I said, ‘Alex, what’s going on?’ He said, ‘If he gives away the signs again, I’m going to drill him.’”

Pirela, whose English is limited, said he initially was unaware he was the subject of Wood’s ire.

Page 4: Padres Press Clips - Major League Baseballmlb.mlb.com/documents/9/2/6/239859926/Padres_Press_Clips_07.01.17_x837n4v6.pdfJul 01, 2017  · outfielder Franchy Cordero to El Paso. Cordero

4

“I thought he was mad with himself, because I honestly didn’t know what he said in the moment,” Pirela, who had led off with a double, said through an interpreter. “When I realized that it wasn’t that and he was yelling at me, I didn’t understand it.

“For him to think I was at second giving signs, that was surprising. I don’t think it made any sense in any way.”

Margot was in the batter’s box when Wood barked at Pirela.

“You can go back and watch,” Margot said through an interpreter. “I was never, in any moment, trying to eye (Pirela) up or get any sort of sign. So I really had no idea what the pitcher was doing at that point.”

Like Green, Richard directed criticism at Wood.

“It’s nice to be in this fraternity of baseball players where there are so many legitimately tough people involved, because it’s such a grind, physically and mentally, to go through a season,” Richard said. “Unfortunately, there’s a few guys that act fake-tough when they’re given an opportunity.”

Richard also expressed surprise at Roberts’ actions. The latter was on the Padres’ coaching staff for five seasons, the last two as bench coach. In late 2015, he did not receive an interview for the managerial job that ultimately went to Green. Last season, after being hired by the Dodgers, Roberts was voted National League Manager of the Year.

“I love Doc,” Richard said. “Doc’s one of the best guys in baseball. And he’s in a situation where he has to defend his guys. As for what he did … I’m not going to speak for him, but it was definitely out of character.”

Both managers indicated a desire to move past Friday’s confrontation. Neither seemed particularly interested in smoothing things over.

“No, I won’t be reaching out to Andy,” Roberts said when asked if he would.

“Sure hope not,” Green said when asked if he expected lingering tension. “At the end of the day, here’s where the true story is in my mind right now: They beat us to death

Page 5: Padres Press Clips - Major League Baseballmlb.mlb.com/documents/9/2/6/239859926/Padres_Press_Clips_07.01.17_x837n4v6.pdfJul 01, 2017  · outfielder Franchy Cordero to El Paso. Cordero

on the baseball field tonight. They’ve beaten us repetitively on the baseball field. They’re the best team in the National League West right now.

“We’ve got a long way to go, and right now, it’s about winning series against them. Pretty soon, it’s going to be about winning seasons against them. We’re not going to yield. We’re not going to just stop because they want to intimidate us on the mound screaming at our baserunner.”

Dillon Overton to start against Dodgers Dennis Lin

Left-hander Dillon Overton will start for the Padres against the Dodgers on Saturday. Overton,

who pitched for Triple-A El Paso on Monday, was claimed off waivers from the Seattle

Mariners on June 19.

With a couple of recent off-days on the schedule, the Padres had not needed a fifth starter to

replace the injured Miguel Diaz until now. Overton had a 9.33 ERA in seven appearances,

including one start, with the Mariners this season. After arriving in the Padres’ clubhouse

Friday, he said El Paso pitching coach Bronswell Patrick had informed him he was tipping his

pitches.

“I was like, ‘What the heck? No wonder y’all were smashing balls off me left and right,’” said

Overton, who faced El Paso earlier in the season. “That’s exactly what I’ve been working on since

I’ve been there.”

On Monday, pitching for El Paso, the 26-year-old allowed one run over five innings. It was an

encouraging performance for a pitcher who had been designated for assignment June 18.

“When you get DFA’d like that, especially right after you had a child, you buy a house, all that

stuff … it just kind of starts hitting you real quick,” said Overton, whose son, Oliver, was born

three months ago. “My wife kept telling me, ‘Don’t worry about the money, we’ll figure it out.’

We prayed for two nights straight, and the next morning, we got a call that said I’d been claimed

by the Padres. I’m going to be honest, I got emotional at the time ’cause I was happy.”

A corresponding roster move will be made when Overton is officially recalled before Saturday’s

game.

With utility man Chase d’Arnaud returning from paternity leave Friday, the Padres optioned

outfielder Franchy Cordero to El Paso. Cordero made a promising major league debut in late

May after Manuel Margot went on the disabled list, but he had struggled recently.

In 27 games, Cordero was hitting .230 with three home runs and 42 strikeouts. Margot, the

Padres’ starting center fielder, returned to action this week.

“I had a great conversation with (Cordero),” manager Andy Green said. “For him, it’s putting

balls in play. He is dynamic, exciting, young, does a ton of really good things, covers ground in

the outfield. He’s going to work on left field and right field, play in the corners a little bit more to

increase his versatility.”

Notable

According to MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo, the Padres signed their 16th-round draft selection,

Kailua (Hawaii) High left-hander Joey Cantillo, for $302,500. Earlier this week, San Diego

signed its 15th-rounder, Hamilton (Ariz.) High right-hander Cole Bellinger, for $350,000. The

deadline to sign draft picks is July 7.

Wil Myers: 'I don't feel like I've put up All-Star numbers' Dennis Lin

Fan balloting for All-Star Game starters concluded Thursday night with no Padres position players near the National League’s leading vote-getters. The full roster, including reserves, will be unveiled Sunday.

Wil Myers, who represented then-host-city San Diego last July, who signed a franchise-record extension in January, who’s become the face of a franchise with few other established names, wouldn’t be surprised if he is left off that roster.

“If anybody’s deserving on this team, it’s Brad Hand,” Myers said before Friday’s series opener against the Dodgers. “I don’t feel like I’ve put up All-Star numbers in the first half, and I feel like Brad has been our guy since day one.”

The first baseman’s statement stemmed from an acknowledgement of reality, not a lack of self-confidence. While Hand has gone from discarded reliever to key trade asset, Myers is short of the pace he set a year ago.

In the first half of 2016, he hit .286 with a .351 on-base percentage, 19 home runs and 15 steals. A torrid June carried him to his first All-Star berth and an appearance in the Home Run Derby. Mutual interest in a long-term contract was revealed a few days later.

Entering Friday, Myers was hitting .264 with a .339 on-base percentage, 16 home runs and nine steals. His defense and baserunning, improved of late, had been shoddy early in the season. In FanGraphs’ version of Wins Above Replacement, he ranked 11th among NL first basemen.

Page 9: Padres Press Clips - Major League Baseballmlb.mlb.com/documents/9/2/6/239859926/Padres_Press_Clips_07.01.17_x837n4v6.pdfJul 01, 2017  · outfielder Franchy Cordero to El Paso. Cordero

9

“It’s been OK,” Myers said, assessing his season to date. “I feel like there’s been some good things and there’s been some bad things. There’s been a lot of things that I’ve learned. My numbers aren’t terrible, but I feel like there’s a lot more in there. I feel like I’ve been saying that for the last two years, so it’s time for me to make a step towards becoming a better player.”

In April, Myers, 26, looked to be building on his career season. Although he walked only twice all month, he logged 16 extra-base hits to go along with a .310/.325/.593 slash line.

Then the calendar turned and pitchers began taking advantage of Myers’ aggressive approach. A prolonged slump covered most of May and part of June. In a three-strikeout showing a few weeks ago, Myers’ average and on-base percentage sunk to season lows of .255 and .307.

Since then, Myers had gone 18-for-61 (.295) with four home runs and, noticeably, 16 walks. Even as a depleted lineup welcomed back table-setter Manuel Margot, the Padres’ No. 3 hitter drew five free passes in as many games.

“One thing I’ve learned, seeing all these elite players in the game, they all take their walks,” Myers said. “That’s something that I haven’t really focused on in the game, and that’s something that I know, if I ever want to get to that level, I need to do. For me, this is the time where you want to learn to do that. You want to learn to get better at taking your walks, controlling your zone better. And if I feel like if I can do that, I’ll turn my 0-for-4s into 0-for-2s. You’ve got guys like (Paul) Goldschmidt and (Joey) Votto, when they get 0-2, they get to 3-2 three pitches later and they get back in the count.”

On his defense, Myers said: “I feel like I’ve done a very good job over there at first in the last two months. I feel like have gotten the work in I need to, I feel like I’m moving my feet better, I feel like I’m getting off the bag better.”

Regarding his baserunning, Myers admitted that broadcasting his goal of a 40-40 season during spring training may not have been the best idea. He also noted that, after he swiped 28 bags in 2016, opponents were bound to adjust.

Page 10: Padres Press Clips - Major League Baseballmlb.mlb.com/documents/9/2/6/239859926/Padres_Press_Clips_07.01.17_x837n4v6.pdfJul 01, 2017  · outfielder Franchy Cordero to El Paso. Cordero

10

“Last year, I felt like I kind of snuck up on them, stole those bases,” Myers said. “This year, they’ve paid a lot of attention to me, so it’s learning how to take that next step of learning how to be a better baserunner, watching film on pitchers, knowing their tendencies, knowing when the right times are to run.”

Padres manager Andy Green, too, was candid in evaluating his star player’s mixed first half.

“I like the walks,” Green said. “The power comes right back as soon as the walks come in. ... He’s trending back in the right direction, and that’s really all I’m concerned with. All-Star-caliber season relative to a couple of the NL first basemen? Probably not, but he’s not that far off. He’s on pace for the most home runs he’s ever hit in his major league career. Average is trending up. On-base is trending towards .350 right now. Those are high-water marks for him. So there’s still some really good things, even if it’s not meeting his expectation level.”

Sunday, it seems likely that Hand will be named the Padres’ lone All-Star representative. Myers does not see a problem with that.

“I feel like it’s going to be Brad, because he’s been a guy that’s taken the ball almost every single day and thrown the ball really well,” Myers said. “Whatever happens, happens. If I make it, great. If not, I’ll go home and see my family.”

TinCaps' Zunica continues powerful June Jeff Sanders

Something certainly clicked for Brad Zunica in June.

The 6-foot-6, 254-pound Zunica homered for the eighth time this month in low Single-A Fort Wayne’s 12-5 loss to host Dayton on Friday night. The blast gave the 21-year-old Zunica his 14th of the season, both tied for a career-high and the second-most in the Padres system.

Jabari Blash also has 14 homers at Triple-A El Paso, while Christian Villanueva has 15 after hitting two Friday night.

A 15th-rounder in 2015, Zunica entered the final game of June hitting .377/.456/.754 with 15 RBIs 20 games. He is hitting .265/.384/.548 for the season after hitting a three-run homer in four at-bats on Friday and hit .242/.294/.401 with 14 homers and 61 RBIs last year at Fort Wayne.

Center fielder Buddy Reed (.261) doubled twice in four at-bats and shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. (.259) went 1-for-4 with two RBIs, a walk and a run scored.

Right-hander Pedro Avila (2-1, 7.40) started the game with seven runs allowed on six hits and three walks in two innings.

Fort Wayne’s loss dropped the team to 33-46 overall and 7-3 in the first half.

Logan White saw big things in Cody Bellinger's future. He didn't see this. Jeff Sanders

Because Cody Bellinger managed a single home run as a high school senior, because he was barely pushing 160 pounds on a 6-foot-nothing frame, some in the Dodgers’ scouting and player development didn’t believe he’d develop into much of a power hitter. Logan White, who’d known his big league father, who’d followed Bellinger’s career from the Little League World Series through the high school ranks, whose own son played ball in the same circuits, was firmly in the other camp.

“I thought he’d hit .275 to .280 in his career and hit anywhere between 18 to 25 homers a year,” White, now a senior advisor with the Padres, recalled. “I’d be lying to you if I thought he’d have this kind of power.”

This kind of power this early in a career has been unprecedented.

The 21-year-old Bellinger is not only the National League’s leading power hitter despite starting the year in the minors, his 24 home runs through his first 57 games is the most in baseball history. That monumental introduction includes several bullet-worthy asides:

• He’s the first player in major league history, at 21 or younger, to log back-to-back multi-homer games;

• His six multi-homer games are a Dodgers rookie record and one behind Mark McGwire’s all-time rookie record in 1987;

• He’s already blown past Adrian Beltre’s 20 homers in 2000 for the franchise record for an Age 21 season;

• He’s joined Shawn Green as one of two Dodgers to hit 10 homers in 10 games, a first in the majors since Troy Tulowitzki in 2010;

Up next?

Surely a spot in next week’s All-Star Game, a date in the home run derby – so long as his pops, Clay, can maneuver his work schedule to throw to him – and, at this pace, a chance to finish the season as just the third player to ever win Rookie of the Year and MVP honors in the same year.

The Dodgers, after all, have surged from a 9-11 start to an NL-best 53-28 record since Bellinger’s debut.

“As far as rookie of the year, I can’t see anyone else climbing past him this year and I think talk of an MVP, that’s valid,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “You look at what he’s done in the short time he’s been here and you’re talking about the best team in the National League and he’s really helped carry us.

“He’s in the conversation.”

Based on where the Dodgers are sitting, Bellinger might even be leading it in some circles.

He’s tops in the NL in slugging (.654), fifth in on-base-plus-slugging (.654), sixth in extra-base hits (39), ninth in RBIs (56) and is homering at a mind-boggling rate – every 9.5 at-bats – that will push him toward the top of the WAR leaderboard before long.

There, Paul Goldschimdt (4.2) reigns for now, but Bellinger (2.5) is closing quickly because of a quick, left-handed swing, off-the-charts baseball IQ and the DNA to tie it all together.

In fact, White and area scout Dustin Yount were counting on the latter all along when the Dodgers signed him to a $700,000 fourth-round deal, $300,000 over the slot recommendation.

“I’ve always been,” White said, “big on bloodlines.”

Still is.

Page 16: Padres Press Clips - Major League Baseballmlb.mlb.com/documents/9/2/6/239859926/Padres_Press_Clips_07.01.17_x837n4v6.pdfJul 01, 2017  · outfielder Franchy Cordero to El Paso. Cordero

16

Four years after drafting Bellinger, White’s Padres drafted his younger brother, Cole, in the 15th round out of Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz. The youngest son of former big leaguer Clay Bellinger is a lean, projectable left-handed pitcher with a 92 mph fastball that figures to play up as he adds another 30 pounds of muscle, as Cody Bellinger did.

The Padres this week signed the younger Bellinger away from Grand Canyon University for $350,000, according to MLB.com’s draft tracker, more than double the $125,000 slot recommendation. The family’s long-time relationship with White – who lived five minutes away from the Bellingers and extended an open invitation for the Bellinger boys to use his batting cage – didn’t hurt.

“It was nice knowing someone had your back,” Cody Bellinger said. “It’s a tough business.”

Tough on both sides of the equation, although White’s had more than his fair share of success.

Just look at the Dodgers.

Clayton Kershaw, Corey Seager and Joc Pederson were all fruits of his department’s labor during his 13 years in Los Angeles and now Bellinger is emerging as a star on a team that’s already won four straight NL West titles. Bellinger is even taking his cues from his Dodgers teammates in a one-sided rivalry with San Diego, piling up three homers and nine RBIs in two games at Petco Park earlier this season that tugged at White’s loyalties if just a bit.

“For me knowing him and his family and the people they are, it's awesome for me to see it happen for him and his family,” White said. “It's almost surreal, but I told him when he plays San Diego I don't want him beating up on us anymore.”

SIBLING RIVALRY

With Cole officially in the Padres organization, the Bellingers can dream of shifting a sibling rivalry from video games and ping pong tournaments at home to under the bright lights in the NL West. To date, the only on-field run-in for the Bellinger boys was in a Hamilton High School alumni game.

Big brother, naturally, had the upper hand.

“I hit a single off him,” Cody Bellinger said with a smile. “I was first-pitch swinging.”

The brothers will have to wait quite a bit longer for an official showdown in the majors, as Cole Bellinger is ticketed to start his career in the Arizona Rookie League later this summer.

Cody spent parts of two years in that circuit before putting himself on the prospect map with a 30-homer season as a 19-year-old in the California League in 2015.

Big brother, not to mention dad Clay, is already a guidepost for Cole.

“I’ve given him a lot of information,” Cody Bellinger said. “What the grind is actually about, if he’s actually ready for it. He said, ‘Yeah.’ He’s a hard worker. I’m pretty proud of him.”

Padres drop feisty opener with Dodgers By AJ Cassavell and Ken Gurnick SAN DIEGO -- Some early fireworks erupted at Petco Park on Friday night. But the Dodgers -- on the strength of seven RBIs from Austin Barnes and another Alex Wood gem -- made certain there was no late drama in a 10-4 series-opening victory over the Padres. Managers Dave Roberts of the Dodgers and Andy Green of the Padres were ejected when a meeting with umpires concluded with Roberts going after Green, triggering both benches to empty. The skirmish was the result of an earlier altercation, when Wood accused Padres left fielder Jose Pirela of signaling pitch location to Manuel Margot from second base. Wood threatened "to drill" Pirela, home-plate umpire Greg Gibson later said, resulting in warnings to both dugouts and leading to the clash between Roberts and Green when Gibson explained the warning to the managers between innings. Full Game Coverage "They chose to handle it with warnings, and when they brought us together to talk about it, I made sure that they understood I took issue with the fact that they were simply letting him off with a warning," Green said. "He was threatening to hit my guy for something he wasn't even in fact doing." • Skippers spar over signs, and benches clear Dodgers, Padres exchange words All of that overshadowed remarkable performances by Barnes (who slugged a grand slam and three-run homer) and Wood, the All-Star candidate who became the first Dodgers pitcher to begin a season 9-0 since Rick Rhoden in 1976. The franchise record is 10, done four times, the last by reliever Ed Roebuck in 1962.

After the ejections, Wood struck out the next six Padres he faced, finishing six innings having allowed one run on two hits with eight strikeouts and three walks while lowering his ERA to 1.83. He is 8 1/3 innings short of qualifying for the league lead.

Wood later admitted that he overreacted to Pirela and said his emotions sapped his energy.

"You're already in competitive mode, fighting mode, and something happens and you start seeing red," said Wood. "I barely even remember what happened tonight. I came out [of the game] and thought I struck out four guys. It was all a blur. It happens in the first inning and I was pretty tired the rest of the game. It was a little battle to get through." Logan Forsythe had four hits and a walk, Justin Turner had three hits -- including a two-run homer -- and a walk, and the Dodgers finished with 16 knocks on the night, one shy of their season high. The Padres mustered six, two of which came courtesy of Hunter Renfroe.

Turner's two-run homer MOMENTS THAT MATTERED Two-out rally: Richard, who allowed seven runs on nine hits over 4 1/3, actually retired the first two hitters he faced in the top of the first inning. But, as was the case in his early May start against the Dodgers, he quickly ran into command problems. Turner singled, and Cody Bellinger and Forsythe walked, setting the stage for Barnes' first career grand slam. Wooden resolve: The managerial clash didn't faze Wood, who responded with six consecutive strikeouts. He fanned the side in the second and third innings, allowing the Dodgers to build an early six-run lead, while the Padres' bats remained quiet. Wood strikes out the side PUIG IN LOVE Moments before the two managers were called to meet behind the plate, Yasiel Puig ended the bottom of the first inning by covering some serious ground to make a remarkable diving catch on a Renfroe popup. He stayed on the grass for a moment, and then Puig, being Puig, removed the ball from his glove and planted a kiss on it, before trotting toward the on-deck circle to lead off the next inning. • Puig kisses ball after grab Puig kisses ball after catch 'WE'RE NOT GOING TO YIELD' Make no mistake, the Dodgers and Padres are teams with very different outlooks in 2017. The Dodgers are in first place and on track for a fifth straight National League West title. The Padres, meanwhile, fell 14 games below .500 and are looking toward the future.

"They beat us to death on the baseball field tonight," Green said. "They've beaten us repetitively on the baseball field. ... We've got a long way to go, and right now, it's about winning series against them. Pretty soon, it's going to be about winning seasons against them. We're not going to yield. We're not going to just stop because they want to intimidate us on the mound screaming at our baserunner."

Green briefly addressed his team after the game. He was quick to note that it's an uphill climb. But he insisted that the season -- and particularly Friday -- was full of moments to build on.

"Somebody'd be lying if they said we're going to overcome a 20-game deficit and overtake the National League West this year," Green said. "No, we're trying to win a series right now. We're trying to teach guys how to play the game the right way every single day. And then we're coming. We're coming with the kind of team that's going to start winning seasons and not just series." Green, Roberts on altercation QUOTABLE "Mac's a pretty big guy. I'll stay away from him." -- Wood, who found himself briefly squared off with

hulking Padres bench coach (and former Dodgers hitting coach) Mark McGwire during the skirmish, only to be whisked away by Clayton Kershaw "We're not going to take lightly to someone saying they're going to throw at one of our guys. To me, that's kind of fake tough to threaten to throw at anybody." -- Richard "No, I won't be reaching out to Andy." -- Roberts SOUND SMART WITH YOUR FRIENDS The Dodgers finished the month of June with a franchise-record 53 home runs, slugging at least one in 21 of the last 22 games. WHAT'S NEXT Dodgers: Rich Hill lost his most recent start, but it was arguably his best of the season because he made it through seven innings. Hill utilized a modified stretch delivery for the first time and the result was better command and more consistent velocity. He faced the Padres on April 5 and allowed one run on two hits in five innings for a 3-1 win, and he'll look for more of the same when he takes the hill at 7:10 p.m. PT Saturday in San Diego. Padres: Dillon Overton is set for his Padres debut in the series' middle game at 7:10 p.m. PT Saturday night. San Diego claimed the left-hander off waivers from Seattle on June 19, and he made one impressive start for Triple-A El Paso before receiving the big league call.

Skippers spar over signs, and benches clear By AJ Cassavell / MLB.com SAN DIEGO -- Benches cleared and tempers flared during Friday night's 10-4 Dodgers victory at Petco Park, in which Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts went after Padres skipper Andy Green during a meeting with umpires before the second inning. The issue arose in the bottom of the first when Dodgers starter Alex Wood chirped at Jose Pirela, who was on second base. Both benches were warned, and when the inning ended, crew chief Sam Holbrook and home-plate umpire Greg Gibson called a conference with the two skippers in foul territory. That's when things got heated. Full Game Coverage Speaking to a pool reporter, Gibson said Wood told him, "If he gives away the signs again, I'm going to drill him." Gibson informed Green, who quickly grew irate. As umpires escorted him back to the dugout, Green got in one last verbal jab, and Roberts clearly took issue. He bolted toward Green and made contact, sending Green stumbling backward. Roberts had to be restrained as both benches cleared.

"The No. 1 thing I took issue with was the threat on the mound from their pitcher to our player that he was going to drill him -- with some expletives mixed in," Green said. "Colorfully telling a guy you're going to hit a guy on the field -- it's unacceptable. And I don't think there's anyone on our club that's going to tolerate that." Green, Roberts on altercation Said Roberts: "There were some things that Andy directed at our player, and at some point I took exception. So I thought it was excessive, and I got emotional. As an opposing manager, to talk about the situation and agree or disagree with how the umpires handle it -- that's his opinion. But when you start pointed comments about a player, then I think I've got a problem with it."

Only minor shoving ensued as the teams converged. Roberts and Green were ejected. After the game, Wood, who pitched six innings of one-run ball, denied that he had threatened to hit Pirela. He added that he couldn't remember their conversation, because he "was seeing red," though he acknowledged frustration at the belief Pirela was giving away the location of his pitches to Manuel Margot.

"2-1 changeup, and Barnes set up away early," said Wood, now the first Dodger to open a season 9-0 since Rick Rhoden in 1976. "I watched the runner, and it was so obvious. I just thought he was giving location. I reacted and got caught up in the moment." Wood on 1st-inning altercation

Page 22: Padres Press Clips - Major League Baseballmlb.mlb.com/documents/9/2/6/239859926/Padres_Press_Clips_07.01.17_x837n4v6.pdfJul 01, 2017  · outfielder Franchy Cordero to El Paso. Cordero

Pirela emphatically denied stealing locations or signs from Barnes (who recorded his first career multi-homer game and drove in seven). Pirela, whose English is limited, said he initially wasn't sure why Wood was upset.

"I didn't know what he said, and at first I didn't even really think he was talking to me," Pirela said. "His attitude, his reactions, they were surprising. ... For him to think I was at second giving signs, that was surprising. I don't think it made any sense in any way."

After Gibson had spoken with Wood, he called all four umpires together in front of the mound. They promptly issued warnings to both teams, but did not allow either manager onto the field in protest. The inning continued, and Pirela was stranded at second base when Yasiel Puig made a brilliant sliding catch. (Puig, being Puig, followed that up by planting a smooch on the baseball). The two skippers, however, weren't in such a loving mood. Green was initially left unaware as to the reasoning behind the warnings. When Gibson told him what he'd heard from Wood, Green fumed.

"He wasn't stealing signs at all," Green said. "He wasn't doing it. Now, if they're frustrated with stealing signs, change your signs." Green on altercation, loss In the middle of the fray was Padres bench coach Mark McGwire (who found himself in the middle of a similar fracas among coaching staffs in 2013 when he served as Dodgers hitting coach). McGwire praised Green afterward. "Andy was awesome," McGwire said. "That's what you do. That's just a common sense thing. You protect your own." Said Padres starter Clayton Richard: "We're not going to take lightly to someone saying they're going to throw at one of our guys. To me, that's kind of fake tough to threaten to throw at anybody."

Richard played under Roberts, who spent six seasons on the Padres' coaching staff with then-manager Bud Black. When the managerial job became open during the 2015-16 offseason, Roberts did not receive an interview, as the Padres opted for Green instead.

Shortly thereafter, Roberts landed the Los Angeles job and earned major accolades in a successful first season at the helm.

"Doc's one of the best guys in baseball," Richard said. "And he's in a situation where he has to defend his guys. But as for what he did, that was definitely out of character."

Friday marked the first ejection of the season for Roberts and his third since he took the helm in Los Angeles. It was Green's second ejection this year and his fourth overall. It's also the second straight night benches have cleared in a Dodgers game. On Thursday in Anaheim, Angels third baseman Yunel Escobar took issue with a plunking from Dodgers reliever Brandon Morrow. An exchange of words followed, but little else came of that situation.

This incident, however, could potentially have a lingering effect in the form of a suspension or fine for Roberts.

"I haven't really thought about it," Roberts said. "I'm sure they'll do what they feel is best. Yeah, I did initiate contact with Andy. It was more trying to get his attention and let him know I didn't appreciate some of his parting comments.

"I probably got too emotional. But we all care about our players, and when things are said about your player, you get a little more sensitive about it. So, I probably could have handled it differently."

Overton gets a fresh start with Padres By Nathan Ruiz / MLB.com SAN DIEGO -- Dillon Overton wandered around the Padres' clubhouse Friday afternoon, somewhat lost.

He shook hands with his new teammates scattered around the room. Claimed off waivers from Seattle 11 days before, Overton knew few members of the organization, let alone San Diego's 25-man roster, which the left-hander will join Saturday before starting the team's game against the Dodgers. Full Game Coverage But at the locker to his left, Overton made a connection. Infielder Chase d'Arnaud, reinstated from the paternity list Friday, introduced himself and began to make small talk. The conversation quickly shifted to d'Arnaud's newborn son, Jagger, the first child he and his wife, Kaitlyn, have had. Overton shared his son, Oliver, had been born only three months before.

After Oliver's birth, Overton and his wife, Morgan, bought a home. Then, on June 18, the Mariners designated him for assignment. Overton felt an emotional weight to support his family.

"When you get DFA'd like that, especially right after you had a child, you buy a house, all that stuff -- 'Am I gonna be able to pay for him? Pay for this house?'" Overton said. "It just kind of starts hitting you real quick."

Morgan told him not to be concerned about the money. They turned to prayer.

"We prayed for two nights straight, and the next morning, we got a call that said I'd been claimed by the Padres," Overton said.

"God is good."

After the claim, Overton's agent texted him. He noticed Overton struggled against El Paso, the Padres' Triple-A affiliate, allowing 12 runs in 6 1/3 innings over two starts.

El Paso pitching coach Bronswell Patrick told Overton he'd been tipping his pitches.

"I was like, 'What the heck? No wonder y'all were smashing balls off me left and right,'" Overton said. "He was like, 'We had 90 percent of your pitches,' because I was tipping. That's exactly what I've been working on since I've been there."

He made one start for El Paso, the fixes seemingly working as he pitched five innings of one-run ball. Although his turn in the Chihuahuas' rotation lined up with the Padres' need for a Saturday starter, Overton did not overthink his duties. After Thursday's game, Patrick told Overton he was getting promoted.

"My thought process the whole time was, 'As of right now, I'm throwing Saturday in El Paso,'" Overton said. "I didn't really care what was going on. When I get the call, I get the call." Overton's callup will require a roster move Saturday. To clear space for d'Arnaud, outfielder Franchy Cordero, hitless in his previous 26 at-bats with 17 strikeouts, was optioned to El Paso.

This will not be Overton's first showing in the Majors, having made six starts over the past two years for Oakland and Seattle, but in his new clubhouse, he's making plenty of first impressions.

Padres-Dodgers a Bellinger family affair LA's Cody hopes to one day face brother Cole in Majors

By AJ Cassavell / MLB.com | SAN DIEGO -- This weekend's series at Petco Park officially marks the start of a Bellinger family rivalry.

That's because earlier this week, Cole Bellinger, brother of slugging Dodgers first basemanCody Bellinger, signed with the Padres for $350,000. Full Game Coverage As a 15th-round Draft pick out of Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz., Cole has a long way to go until he's taking part in these rivalry games himself. But Cody's mind has already drifted to the possibility of facing Cole, a right-handed pitcher, in the Majors.

"That would be my top [baseball] moment, just because of how hard it is to get here," Cody said before Friday's game. "To have both of us get this far would be cool."

With a four-year age gap, Cole and Cody have squared off on a baseball field only once before -- in an alumni game at Hamilton. Cody singled. • Cody will take Derby hacks, if dad pitches

On Friday, he joked that he didn't think he'd be able to provide an accurate scouting report, given how little he's seen of Cole over the past four years.

"I know he's extremely intelligent in how he pitches, and he's got really good stuff," Cody said. "So I'm excited for him to learn from professional coaches."

On Thursday, Cody learned he'd been invited to participate in the T-Mobile Home Run Derby on July 10 at Marlins Park. But he's waiting to learn if his father, Clay, will be able to pitch to him before he commits. Clay played parts of four big league seasons with the Yankees and Angels.

Cody, of course, has been on a tear since his big league callup in April. He's leading the National League with 24 home runs, and he's fifth with a .993 OPS.

"As far as the past couple years, being in the Majors, he's definitely helped me realize that's what I want to do," Cole told MLB.com earlier this month. "He's talked to me about how cool it is, but how much hard work it takes. He has hopefully guided me down that path."

Cole, who was previously committed to play at Grand Canyon University, signed with the Padres on Wednesday and has already begun working out at the team's complex in Arizona.

It's the first step in his professional career toward a matchup with his brother in an NL West rivalry game.

"He's a few years away," Cody said. "But to do what he did and to make it as far as he has, it's kind of special."

Hill looks to spoil Overton's Padres debut By Nathan Ruiz / MLB.com

Dillon Overton's Padres debut will come against the National League's best team, as the left-hander will square off against the division rival Dodgers and veteran Rich Hill at 7:10 p.m. PT Saturday at Petco Park.

The Padres claimed Overton, who pitched in nine games with one start for Seattle this season, off waivers on June 19. He made one start with Triple-A El Paso, allowing one run in five innings in his debut with the organization. He's pleased to be in San Diego. Full Game Coverage "Weather's beautiful," he said. "Can't beat it, so I was happy when I got called up."

Dodgers left-hander Rich Hill will face him. Hill struck out seven Angels over seven innings in his previous start. Things to know about this game

• With the exception of a rough outing against Cleveland, Hill was excellent in June. The Indians tagged Hill for seven runs over four innings, but he posted a 3.00 ERA in his other four starts during the month.

• Despite his June success, Hill had some trouble throwing strikes leading off an inning. Over the past 30 days, Hill has walked 26.9 percent of hitters leading off an inning, which is the worst walk rate among qualified starters.

• This will be Overton's seventh career start. He made one for Seattle this season and five for Oakland in 2016. He has a 9.85 ERA as a starter.

Feuding managers help spark Dodgers-Padres altercation Mark Townsend Big League Stew

Managers Dave Roberts of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Andy Green of the San Diego Padres were at the center of a tension altercation that nearly led to a brouhaha on Friday night.

It happened immediately following the first inning after the managers had huddled with home plate umpire Greg Gibson to iron out developing tensions between Dodgers starting pitcher Alex Wood and Padres infielder Jose Pirela.

As was confirmed following the game, Wood believed Pirela was stealing and relaying signs during the first inning, which violates one of baseball’s countless “unwritten rules.” Gibson originally warned both benches, later telling Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times that fellow umpire D.J. Reyburn overheard Wood threatening to hit Pirela his next time up.

Both Roberts and Green were not privy to that information at first. That ultimately led to the between-inning discussion, and that’s where things turned hostile.

For his part, Wood would deny that accusation. But nobody was buying it after the umpires gave their perspective. That’s especially true of Green, who shared his displeasure and some other “pointed” words with Roberts.

Roberts then took exception to Green’s comments and charged towards him, leading to some minor contact and both dugouts and bullpens clearing.

The altercation was barely a scuffle, featuring more finger-pointing than anything else.

There was also a possible challenge.

Once order was restored, it was confirmed that both managers had been ejected. It’s entirely possible a fine or even a minor suspension could come for the contact and the managers playing a part in escalating the situation.

In the top of the second inning, Justin Turner was hit by a pitch from Padres starter Clayton Richard. That would be the last notable sign of tension. In fact, the next time Pirela came to bat there was no hint of retribution. Instead, Wood dispatched him by striking him out.

Perhaps the players all decided to let the managers blow their steam off for them, or maybe they realized getting that upset over an unwritten rule was a waste of energy.

Whatever the case, it was a wild scene that seemingly came out of nowhere.

Barnes' two homers lifts Dodgers to 10-4 rout of Padres Associated Press SAN DIEGO -- Austin Barnes and the Los Angeles Dodgers put on another power display while tempers flared between the two maangers. Barnes hit two homers and drove in seven runs in a 10-4 victory over the San Diego Padres on Friday night in a game where both managers were ejected early on for arguing with each other. "Crazy stuff like that happens," Barnes said.

Barnes hit a grand slam and a three-run shot while teammate Justin Turner hit a two-run homer as the Dodgers finished June with 53 home runs, a franchise record for any month. But the talk afterward centered on Dodgers pitcher Alex Wood threatening "to drill" Padres baserunner Jose Pirela and an ensuing altercation between Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and counterpart Andy Green that led to Roberts shoving Green, the Padres manager. Both managers were ejected.

"I probably got too emotional," said Roberts, who could face punishment from the commissioner's office for also bumping crew chief Sam Holbrook when he charged Green.

Roberts said he was sticking up for Wood in response to Green making a derogatory remark about the pitcher.

Wood, who went six innings with one run allowed, improved his record to 9-0 and lowered his ERA to 1.83 -- but not before screaming a threat at Padres baserunner Jose Pirela in the first inning.

Plate umpire Greg Gibson said second-base umpire D.J. Reyburn heard Wood threaten Pirela, who was at second base.

"He said, `If you keep giving away location, I'm going to.drill you,' " Gibson said. "I went to the mound to change balls out. I've known Alex for a while. I said, `Alex, what's going on?' He said, `If he gives away the signs again, I'm going to drill him.' Right then, my hands are tied."

Gibson issued a warning to both managers but opted to defer a full explanation because he wanted to keep the game moving.

Wood said he believed Pirela was gesturing to Padres hitters the set-up location of Barnes.

"I was seeing red," he said. "Things are said that nobody probably means."

When Gibson summoned the managers for an explanation before the second inning, the managers got into an argument.

Page 31: Padres Press Clips - Major League Baseballmlb.mlb.com/documents/9/2/6/239859926/Padres_Press_Clips_07.01.17_x837n4v6.pdfJul 01, 2017  · outfielder Franchy Cordero to El Paso. Cordero

Roberts broke away from Gibson and knocked Green back a step while contacting Holbrook in the back.

"I probably could have handled it a little differently," Roberts said.

Roberts said he considers it part of the game when a baserunner "gives location" to a hitter.

He shared that opinion with Wood, he said.

But he said he "didn't appreciate" Green's comments about Wood.

"The number one thing I took issue with was the threat on the mound from their pitcher to our player, that he was going to drill him," Green said. "It's unacceptable."

The Padres manager didn't approve of Gibson's response to Wood's threat.

"I understand what the umpiring crew was trying to do by issuing warnings, but to me if you're making threats to hit a guy on the baseball field, that's an ejection right there, and they didn't choose to handle it that way," Green said.

Barnes gave the Dodgers a 4-0 lead with a two-out drive beyond the left-field wall, off Clayton Richard (5-8) in the first. Homering twice in a game for the first time, Barnes made it 10-1 with his fourth, off Jose Valdez in the sixth. Logan Forsythe had four hits and a walk for the Dodgers, who are 6-1 against San Diego this season. L.A's 54-28 record leads the National League West.

ALL-STAR CONFLICT?

Roberts acknowledged Clayton Kershaw is on track to be ineligible to pitch in the All-Star Game because he would pitch next Sunday. "We'll cross that bridge when we get to it," Roberts said. "But I would think he would probably make that start for the Dodgers." Kershaw is to start on Tuesday, followed by the start Sunday at Dodger Stadium against the Kansas City Royals. OOPS

Hunter Renfroe's flyball landed in left-center field between Dodgers outfielders Chris Taylor and Joc Pederson, good for a double. A Padres ballgirl caught a live ball near the left-field line, likely preventing Manuel Margot from scoring on Renfroe's fourth-inning double. But, Cory Spangenberg's groundout scored Margot. Dodgers: Corey Seager, who has been hampered by a hamstring injury, was held out and Roberts said his shortstop, who played Thursday, "is fine" and probably will start Saturday's game. Padres: Infielder Chase D'Arnaud came off the paternity list and joined the active roster before the game. Padres On Deck: Tatis Homers as Fort Wayne Wins Sixth Straight Pitchers Michael Kelly, Eric Lauer promoted By Bill Center

Eighteen-year-old Fernando Tatis Jr. hit his 11th homer Thursday night as Single-A Fort Wayne defeated South Bend 7–4 to win a sixth straight game and run their second-half Midwest League record to 7–1.
