Program Objec�vesThis course is designed to provide local governmentprofessionals with an opportunity to par�cipate in communica�on skill-based training to strengthen their individual and team performance. Managing change, collabora�ng and naviga�ng difficult conversa�ons are essen�al communica�ons competencies, which local government professionals must demonstrate daily. This course will assist par�cipants to become more effec�ve in these areas.

Time and PlaceThe 2019 session of MATI Advanced Communica�onSkills will start at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 28 at Bowen Lodge, Bowen Island. The course will run all week, with par�cipants living “in residence” at scenic Bowen Lodge.For more informa�on about Bowen Lodge, see:www.bowenislandlodge.ca. The program will end at 10:30 am on Friday May 3, so that par�cipants can depart on the mid-morning ferry from Bowen Island. Note that it is a 20 minute ferry trip from Bowen Island to Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver.

Communica�ng with Diverse Popula�onsAn experienced team from the City of Vancouver includingAnne Nickerson, Director, Equal Employment Opportunity, and Paul Hendren, External Rela�ons and Protocol, will focus on giving par�cipants tools they need to deal more effec�vely with diverse popula�ons in BC communi�es, including poten�al use of social media for outreach.

Leaders RoundtableDiscuss with senior local government leaders including Paul Gipps, MATI Mentor and CAO, FVRD; Emanuel Machado, CAO, Town of Gibsons; Madeline McDonald, CAO, Village of Harrison Hot Springs; Peter Sparanese, CAO, City of Abbotsford; Ted Townsend, Director, Corporate Communica�ons and Marke�ng, City of Richmond.

Communica�ng Effec�vely with and Through the MediaWhether you are working directly with the media or beingcovered as part of your presenta�on to Council/Board, effec�ve communica�ons is cri�cal. Jan Enns, Communica�ons Consultant and Trainer, and Julie Rogers, Communca�ons Manager, District of Sechelt, lead this interac�ve session in which you will improve your ability to work with the media to promote your ini�a�ve and learn how to respond effec�vely when they call. Effec�ve use of social media will also be discussed.

Public Consulta�on SkillsAlison McNeil, Instructor, Capilano University, will lead this session focusing on building consensus with stakeholder groups, solving problems around sensi�ve issues and making local government more accessible to the public. This session will also refer to current prac�ces by local governments in their use of social media.

MATI Advanced Communica�on Skills Wrap-UpPar�cipant teams will present demonstra�ons of what they learned at MATI AC and the gradua�on ceremony will be held. Par�cipants and faculty will take the mid-morning ferry from Bowen Island.

University Credit

As with the other MATI courses offered by Capilano University in partnership with LGMA, participants are strongly encouraged to enroll

in the program as a three-credit Capilano University course, PADM 205. Students and employers tell us that they get more out of the course when taken for credit. All credit students will complete two short assignments and receive their final grade on the last day of the course.

Interna�onal Ins�tute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC)The IIMC grants the professional designa�on known as Cer�fied Municipal Clerk (CMC). To earn the CMC designa�on, you must have the educa�on and per�nent experience required by the IIMC.

Each of Capilano University’s Local Government Program courses (including all Capilano MATI courses) is accepted by the IIMC towards the CMC designa�on when taken for credit.

MATIs offered through Capilano University each provide 30 points of the total required 60 IIMC points. For more details on Capilano University courses and IIMC requirements, contact Alison McNeil at Capilano University ([email protected]) and visit the IIMC website at www.iimc.com.

FeesThe fee per par�cipant is $3000 (plus $150.00 GST). LGMA members are en�tled to a discounted rate of $2,730 plus GST. Upon comple�on of this MATI course, the LGMA will provide a reimbursement to your organiza�on for this member-preferred rate. If you have any ques�ons, please contact [email protected]. This is an all-inclusive fee, which will cover tui�on, course materials, accommoda�on, all meals and refreshment breaks, and all special recrea�onal ac�vi�es. Board of Examiners Cer�ficates and Scholarships

MATI AC par�cipants will be eligible for a scholarship from the provincial UBCM Commemora�ve Scholarship fund. Those interested in a scholarship

may apply by submi�ng a scholarship applica�on to the Board of Examiners. Applica�on forms are available on-line from the Board of Examiners website, or search for Local Government Staff and Development on the Government of BC website www2.gov.bc.ca.

If you are working towards cer�fica�on from the Board ofExaminers, please note that MATI AC, when taken as a credit course, will be accepted as an Elec�ve for the Provincial Board of Examiners’ cer�fica�on. For this reason, the Board will award credit students with higher scholarships than non-credit students.
