A WORD FROM YVON LAPLANTELa Classique internationale de canots de la Mauricie is the oldest river marathon competition in the world. For 85 years, canoe ath-letes and, more recently, rabaska and kayak crews, bring a new energy with their perseverance and determination to travel down the St. Maurice River from La Tuque to Trois-Rivières. Each year, the Classique team celebrates the majestic river extending through the beautiful region that is the Mauricie.

La Classique remains the largest truly regional sporting and cultural event, involving multiple public and private partners from all communities, dozens of volunteers, hundreds of athletes and thousands of supporters from all over Quebec, Canada and the United-States.

La Classique takes great pride in hosting this exhilarating competition which takes place through a forward-looking celebration of nautical sports’ traditions.

CLASSIQUE INTERNATIONALE DE CANOTSDE LA MAURICIE HISTORY

Each year since 1934, the Classique internationale de canots de la Mauricie is held. As a sports and cultural event, the Classique is a front runner at organizing events in the Mauricie region. Here is a short overview of the origin, legends and highlights of the Classique.

Originally It was in 1934 on the occasion of the Trois-Rivières tricentennial festivities that the Radisson Club or-ganized the first canoe race from La Tuque to Trois-Rivières in order to pay tribute to the first martyr of Trois-Rivières and Jesuit missionary, Father Buteux. This event rooted itself in the history and traditions of Mauricie.

The first raceSaturday morning, August 18 1934, eleven teams of paddlers were lined up along the old dock of La Tuque for departure. The race organized as part of the celebrations of the tricentenary of Trois-Rivières was led by the Radisson Club. The race from La Tuque to Trois-Rivières was split in two stages. The first start signal was given at 7 hours, 22 minutes and 15 seconds. Jos «Bin» Lachance and Victor Gélinas won this first edition with a time of 16 hours, 7 minutes and 30 seconds. They were rewarded a bronze medal of the tricentennial of the city of Trois-Rivières, a 40.00 CAD prize from Shawinigan Water & Power (company that sponsored the team), a 40.00 USD (as a gift of victory) and 1.00 CAD from Mr. Albé Matteau, awarded when he shook hands with the winners at the Trois-Rivières dock.

During the warFrom 1941 to 1945, the race was not officially held because of the Second World War raging in Europe. Human and material resources were then concentrated to resolve the conflict. Even so, a symbolic starting signal was held each year.

The After WarThe war now over, the race came back to life in 1946 with the help of the wealthy families McCormick and Stillman. They will be the main organizers in 1946 and 1947. Today, the memory of the one who revived the Classique is Anne McCormick. Nicknamed the Queen of Mauricie, she is commemorated by a cup named after her: the prestigious McCormick Cup. This cup, presented each year to the champions of the Classique, was bought and chiselled in New York at Birks for the first time in 1936. Jean Lemay and Armand Sauva-geau were the first to win the cup. She is the most coveted by paddlers from all over North America. It’s the Stanley Cup of the canoe.

The Classique becomes internationalIn 1949, the Classique became an international competition with the participation of two American paddlers: Eugene Jenson and Tom Esters. They were the winners of the 1949 race. They performed under the watchful eyes of more than 10,000 people in Shawinigan along the boulevard St-Maurice. This edition also marked the first weighing and first measurement of canoes.

The Triple Crown of Canoe Racing in North AmericaThe Classique formed a cumulative scoring competition in 1992 in three well-known races with the General Clinton Canoe Regatta and the Au Sable River Canoe Marathon.

A Classique’s legendWithout a doubt, Serge Corbin is the most achieved paddler in the history of the Classique internationale de canots de la Mauricie. He won the Classique 26 times. He is still the record holder (13:58:08) at the AuSable River Canoe Marathon with his 1994 partner Solomon Carriere. He also won the Clinton Canoe Regatta 28 times out of 29 participations. He is undoubtedly a talented paddler. Moreover, the one nicknamed «The King of the River» was inducted with his brother Claude (winner of 8 Classiques) at the Temple de la Re-nommée du canot (Canoe Hall of Fame) in 2012.

The least we can say is that the Classique international de canots de la Maurice has a rich history rooted in Mauricie. Will you be able to make it into the Classique’s history?
