MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT

4

We left behind a year full of extremely important developments. 2015 saw two important general elections in Turkey. Political stability having been rebuilt in Turkey will bring along some new business opportunities. The Medium-term Economic Program announced by the new government offers highly positive prospects for Turkey.

Given today’s intense competition across the world, using knowledge is not enough as we should produce more and more. We can only then compete with global brands and also have our say in the industries we are engaged in. Using an innovative and high value-added production model is the key to generating knowledge. For that reason, we need to increase the production and export of high value-added products in Turkey.

Ranking among the few industries that have no trade deficit and make positive contribution to the national current deficit, the Turkish packaging industry disclosed a foreign trade surplus in 2015 as it did in previous years. The industry’s 2015 exports and imports stood at USD 3.7 billion and USD 3.1 billion, respectively. Having adopted a high value-added and sustainable production model, the industry recorded a trade surplus of USD 595 million in 2015 and continued to contribute to the Turkish economy’s growth.

Since the global economy has been facing uncertainties and risks recently, our packaging industry needs to diversify its markets. Asian and Far Eastern markets offer great business potential that can not be neglected. We need to work harder to sell more products and more packaging to Asian markets that account for nearly 50% of the global economy and 60% of the world population. In that context, we hosted the Asian Packaging Federation’s (AFP) Annual Congress and events in November 2015. The three-day events were attended by some 100 representatives from 36 major packaging manufacturers having presence in 11 Asian countries. In addition to the Congress, we hosted more than 200 B2B meetings. I believe these meetings, shedding light on the business opportunities and potential in the whole region, will bring new horizons to

our industry. As part of the events, an awards ceremony was also held for the AsiaStar 2015 competition where the best packaging designs in Asia were selected. Having participated in the competition for the second time, Turkey won a total of 18 awards, ranking fourth among the participating countries. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the award winners.

Packaging Manufacturers Association (ASD) has joined the Save Food initiative, formed under the leadership of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to develop projects intended to prevent food loss and reduce food waste across the world.

The “Bread Waste Prevention Campaign”, launched in 2013 under the coordination of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, the Turkish Grain Board and ASD, has been praised by Save Food, saying that it can serve as a good model for the rest of the world. We are proud that our food-waste prevention projects are welcomed across the world.

Turkish Packaging Manufacturers Association (ASD) and REED TÜYAP Fuarcılık A.Ş. are jointly organizing the Eurasia Packaging 2016 Istanbul, the 22nd International Packaging Industry Fair, with valuable support from other industry associations, including Packaging Machinery Association (AMD), Label Manufacturers Association (ESD), Carton Board Packaging Manufacturers Association (KASAD), Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association (MASD), Corrugated Board Packaging Manufacturers Association (OMÜD) and Rigid Plastic Packaging Manufacturers Association (SEPA), Both the major events will be held between 2 and 5 November 2016 (Wednesday to Saturday). Our International Packaging Industry Fair, which has grown 30-fold in 21 years and is showing the high level of solidarity and cooperation in the industry, will continue to grow in 2016 with your support. Registering to the event’s official website, exhibitors and visitors will be able to communicate with each other by leaving messages or scheduling an appointment. In addition, a mobile

The industry’s 2015 exports and imports stood at USD 3.7 billion and USD 3.1 billion, respectively. Having adopted a high value-added and sustainable production model, the industry recorded a trade surplus of USD 595 million in 2015 and continued to contribute to the Turkish economy’s growth.

application will be available at the Fair, meaning that visitors will, once they downloaded the application, be able to locate the exhibitors they look for, virtually walk around the venue and to communicate with friends and exhibitors online on the social media. The latest trends and technologies in the printing industry will also be showcased at the Printpack Technologies Special Section of the 2016 Eurasia Packaging Fair Istanbul where industry players and the industries they are serving will be brought under one roof.

This year, we will organize the seventh version of the Packaging Crescents and Stars of Packaging Competition, which has become a success story and a national brand name and has been receiving more and more participants every passing year. The competition opened for applications in February and remains open until 3 June 2016. The Crescents and Stars of Packaging Competition opened its doors to foreign competitors last year and, thus, Turkey will name the ‘World Crescents and Stars’ of Packaging 2016.

Our goal is to make the competition, which has become a national brand in as short as 6 years, a regional one, spanning first the Eastern European, Balkan, Middle Eastern and North African countries and Turkic Republics, and then to grow in into an international one. At ASD, we are working hard to improve the Turkish packaging industry, which contributes greatly to the national economy, and we are glad to see you all on our side.

Last year, we held the 11th version of the National Packaging Design Students Competition, which is intended to encourage industrial design students in Turkey to get involved in packaging design as well. The designers of the top three winning designs and of those judged as meriting an honorable mention in the 12th version of the Competition will be awarded various prizes and an annual “ASD & TÜYAP Scholarship” in an effort to help them maintain and improve their success. I congratulate the winners and wish them more success. Their prizes will be presented at an award ceremony which will be held as part of the inauguration ceremony for the Eurasia Packaging 2016 Istanbul, the 22nd International Packaging Industry Fair which is organized by ASD jointly with Reed TÜYAP. The award-winning and finalist projects will also be showcased at the Fair which will be held between 2 and 5 November 2016.

The weekly TV show “PACKAGING WORLD” broadcast on BloombergHT TV, intended to provide insights into the global competitive power of the Turkish packaging industry and to share the industry’s agenda with the public accurately and effectively, will continue to be broadcast throughout 2016 with ASD’s support. On the fortnightly show, leading figures from the industry are hosted to discuss almost all the aspects of the industry. Video recordings of the show are available on YouTube for those missing it.

We continue to distribute our complementary booklet, “Things to Know about Packaging and the Environment”, which features useful articles and information on what consumers should do to minimize the impacts of used packaging on the environment and to preserve our natural resources in a sustainable manner, and on how to increase public awareness about these issues. Distributed to nearly 113 thousand children so far, the booklet’s 4th edition has been printed in 40 thousand copies. We will continue to distribute it to children in the next education year as well.

A well-trained and highly qualified workforce, who has the necessary know-how and professional skills and is dedicated to life-long improvement, is the key to sustainable growth in the world of business and economy. Accordingly, we have been developing projects continuously on the basis of our 24 years of industrial experience and putting them into practice at our Packaging Academy in a bid to expand the industry’s qualified human resources. Hundreds of participants enrolled in the courses offered by the ASD Packaging Academy in 2015, and the number is continuing to grow in 2016.

Please visit www.ambalaj.org.tr for details on the Academy’s Training Calendar. Together with the distinguished members of the ASD Board and ASD employees, we will continue to develop new projects in 2016 to help the packaging industry grow even bigger.

I wish you all the best.Yours sincerely,Sadettin KorkutPresidentTurkish Packaging Manufacturers Association (ASD)

UNIVERSITY – INDUSTRY COOPERATIONCooperation is being established with universities in Turkey that give training and carry out academic work in packaging area. In the researches that we made about the work done in Turkey in this field, we found that there are 103 different courses given in 12 departments of 41 universities. We share information that universities may need about the subject of packaging. Time to time, we try to contribute with conferences, panels, workshops and operation tours. We plan to expand this work, which in the past period was carried out mostly at local level, to an increasingly wider geography.

ASD PACKAGING ACADEMYWe are organising seminars on several subjects in order to increase and develop the vocational knowledge and competencies of our members. We are holding these seminars in our hall in the general Packaging Industry building or in other venues depending on the number of participants. Some of these seminars are as follows

These are enhanced every month by about 100 regular and non-regular publications. In order to make the sources more easily accessible, we are renewing our catalogue and classification. Our Packaging Literature library is open free of charge within working hours to everyone who wants to carry out research or professional study about packaging. Our aim is to transfer this collection to cyber environment to make it accessible 7/24.

GOVERNMENT RELATIONSWe are getting involved in programs organised by Ministries in order to have our industry be informed quickly and effectively as part of the harmonisation work that is carried out parallel with the EU legislation. We are sharing with our members the information that we obtain from these programs. We are also trying to answer our members’ requests about legal processes and practices with the help of related authorities

competition where 169 packaging entries were assessed in 9 categories, 88 of them were awarded. One of the awards was for

Switzerland in the Competition which accepted foreign entries for the first time this year.

Results Announced for 2015 Crescent And Stars of

Packaging Competition

Gold Packaging Award winners received their awards from President of ASD Sadettin Korkut and TSE President Sebahittin Korkmaz.

The awards for the Crescent and Stars of Packaging Competition 2015 organized by the Turkish Packaging Manufacturers Association (ASD) were distributed at an event held at Shangri-La Bosphorus on 8 December 2015. Champions were announced for the 2015 Crescent and Stars of Packaging Competition, the award ceremony of which has been postponed to a future date in 2015 because o f the terrorism actions taking place in the Eastern and South-eastern regions and due to respect for the memories of our martyrs that struck us with grief. Of this year’s 169 packages in the competition, whose award ceremony will later be announced by ASD, 16 were granted ‘Gold’, 20 ‘Silver’, 18 ‘Bronze Awards’. 34 packages in various categories received ‘Competency Awards’. 3 packages selected in cooperation with Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) from among the ‘Gold Award’ winners won the ‘Gold Packaging Award’.

This year Crescent and Stars of Packaging Competition, where packaging manufactures, brand owners and designers participated with their commercialised packages, had the highest number of entries in Food, Graphic Design and Beverages categories. Considered to be one of the most valuable awards in Turkey, the competition had more than 50 percent of the applications from food, graphic design and beverage sectors. In the Industrial & Transportation

packages category, there were about 3 times more entries as compared to the previous year. This year the highest number of applications was in the graphic design category with 39 packages.

The jury, after doing a one-by-one assessment of the packages that entered the competition in the branches of Industrial and Transportation, Flexible, Health and Cosmetics Products & Pharmaceuticals, Packaging materials, Presentation and Protection Products, Non-Food Packaging identified the champions of 2015 through a difficult process. This year’s ‘Gold Packaging Award’ was granted to 3 products from Food and Exposition, Presentation and Storage Product at Points of Sale category. A packaging from Switzerland was also granted an award in this year’s competition where entries from foreign countries were accepted for the first time.

President of ASD Sadettin Korkut gave the following information about the results of this year’s competition: “One of the primary targets of ASD is to bring our sector to a more competitive position in international markets. Our Crescent and Stars of Packaging Competition, which is now an international brand, was opened to foreign countries

this year. With the Crescent and Stars of Packaging Competition having gained an international nature, Turkey now will select World Crescent and Stars of Packaging. When the number of entries from foreign countries in our competition increases in the future, Turkey is expected to become a global and not only a regional centre of attraction in packaging sector.”

Indicating that the finalists who were granted at least Competency 2015 Award in the Competition will be entitled to participate in the WorldStar Competition organised by the World Packaging Organisation and the AsiaStar Competition organised by Asia Packaging Federation, Korkut said, “We will demonstrate the current position of Turkish packaging sector to the whole world in these international competitions which are supported by the member countries of these organisations and in which ASD has been giving votes as the jury member.”

Serving as an umbrella organization for leading packaging manufacturers in Turkey, ASD has joined the global Save Food initiative. Having developed and implemented some significant projects to prevent food loss and waste reduction to improve food safety across the world, the Save Food initiative was founded in 2010 with the support of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization and Messe Düsseldorf. The Save Food initiative aims to encourage dialogue between industry, research, politics and civil society on food loss and waste reduction. For this purpose, the initiative regularly brings together stakeholders from the food, packaging and logistics industries involved in the food supply chain for conferences and projects. Thus it creates various platforms to highlight examples of best practice, develop innovative solutions and raise consumer awareness of the impact of food loss in order to ensure that food resources are used more efficiently.

ASD President Sadettin Korkut said, “Packed products is an indication of the importance being attached to consumers in terms of hygiene and health. Packaging helps us keep track of products and prevent illegal production. This, in turn, contributes to both the national economy and food safety. Packaging also helps us transport foods intact, keep them fresh for longer period of time. In short, packaging is essential to preventing food loss. In countries where packaging consumption rates are high, particularly in western Europe, food loss is as low as 2 or 3% thanks to packaging. However, in other countries where packaging consumption rates are low, food loss is as high as 50 or 60%.’’

Referring to the “Bread Waste Prevention Campaign” was launched in 2013 under the coordination of both the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock and the Turkish Grain Board, ASD President Sadettin Korkut said, ‘’Packaging loaves of bread properly and offering them to the consumer in small portions has made a contribution of TL 2.8 billion to the national economy

ASD Joins Save Food The Packaging Manufacturers Association (ASD) has joined the Save Food initiative. Pioneered by the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Save Food initiative aims to prevent food loss and waste reduction to improve food safety.

Referring to the “Bread Waste Prevention Campaign” was launched in 2013 under the coordination of both the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock and the Turkish Grain Board, ASD President Sadettin Korkut said, ‘’The campaign, which has prevented waste of 1,05 million loaves of bread a day, amounting to 384 million a year, has been mentioned by Save Food as a good example worth imitating across the world. It is essential that every individual across the world has access to safe and adequate amount of food. At ASD, we are determined and assume responsibility to contribute to the efforts intended to solve this matter.’’

in only one year. “The campaign has been mentioned by Save Food as a good example worth imitating across the world in terms of prevention of food loss.’’ Korkut added, “The annual loss of fresh vegetables and fruits that are grown through hard work is nearly TL 16 billion. We have a similar problem with legumes. About 30% of these products are placed on the market in packages. But packaging can help us prevent food from being dumped. Through the extensive expertise of ASD members in this area, I believe we will be able to make significant contributions to the global Save Food initiative which is working to find out ways and develop solutions to prevent food loss and reduce food waste across the entire value chain. It is essential that every individual across the world has access to safe and adequate amount of food and we will continue using all our resources to make this ensure that. We are determined and we assume responsibility to contribute to the efforts intended to solve this matter.’’

Positive contribution to current deficit The industry recorded a foreign trade surplus of USD 595 million in 2015 and thus continued to provide positive contribution to the current deficit which is one the national economy’s major problems. In addition, the industry recorded an exports unit of 2.158 (USD/KG) in 2015, which confirms the industry’s exports performance was above the average of Turkey’s overall exports. Our industry has been making considerable positive contribution to the current deficit. It is important for us now to tap the existing potential in an effort to grow bigger, and also to continue to add value to the national economy.” The Turkish Packaging Manufacturers Association (ASD) published its 2015 report, prepared on the basis of data from the Turkish Statistical Institute and containing the industry’s foreign trade data for 2015. According to the report, the industry increased its exports by 17%, compared with 2014, to USD 3 billion 740 million.

Germany top export destination In 2015, Germany and the U.K. were the top export destinations for the packaging industry with exports of USD 287,3 million and USD 269,5 million, respectively.

Stating that 2015 was a tough year for the Turkish economy, ASD President Sadettin Korkut said, “Despite all the geopolitical risks, political uncertainties caused by two successive elections, escalating terror incidents and the

negative effects of the Euro/USD parity encountered by the Turkish economy last year, the industry showed good performance. The industry will focus on high value-added products and explore new markets in 2016 to take strong steps towards recording USD 10 billion worth of exports as part of its 2023 vision.”

Exports up, imports down According to the data released by ASD, the packaging industry’s exports grew 11% in terms of volume, but lost 12% in value, in 2015, compared with 2014. Importing 1 million 921 thousand tons of packaging materials in 2014, the industry improved its performance in this segment in 2015, importing 1 million 719 thousand tons of materials. This decrease in imports reflected at a higher rate in the industry’s import expenses, declining from USD 3 billion 583 million to USD 3 billion 145 million. Supported by the growth in exports, this decrease in imports resulted in a trade surplus of USD 594,7 million.

An examination of the import figures in terms of packaging types shows that plastic packaging products held a share of 55% and paper/cardboard packaging 35% in the total imports. The highest drop was observed in the imports of glass packaging products in 2015, decreasing by 51% in terms of volume and 42% in terms of value. This segment was followed by paper/cardboard packaging by a decline of 8%, while imports of wooden packaging and of bags/sacks grew 14% and 13%, respectively, in 2015.

ASD released the foreign trade data of the packaging industry for 2015. Turkey’s exports fell 8.6% last year, while the industry achieved to increase its exports by 17% and decreased imports, recording a foreign trade surplus of USD 595 million.

Packaging Industry Exports Grow 17%

The Turkish Packaging Manufacturers Association (ASD) released the industry’s foreign trade data for 2015. Commenting on the data, ASD President Sadettin Korkut said, “The industry exported some 1.7 tons of packaging products in 2015, recording USD 3.7 billion in import revenues. In 2015, Turkey’s exports in terms of volume fell 1.5%, compared with 2014, while the packaging industry increased its exports volume 17%. In addition, the amount of cash paid by the industry for packaging imports fell some 11%. The industry’s exports have outpaced imports thanks to the added-value we have created.

Unpacked Cheese Banned from Market

Developed in line with the Turkish Food Codex as a result of long work done in consultation with industry players, universities and NGOs, the Regulation introduces new rules requiring that cheeses intended for retail can only be marketed in packages and at places meeting the related hygiene criteria. Packaging for cheeses will have to comply with the requirements provided in the Regulations on Substances and Materials in Contact with Food Products promulgated as part of the Turkish Food Codex. Commenting on the Regulation, Sadettin Korkut, President of ASD Packaging Manufacturers Association, said, “The control over the production and sale of cheeses that are highly susceptible to counterfeiting, giving rise to risks particularly in terms of hygiene and health, will now be clearer.” Stating that any unpacked food product is a risk to human health, Korkut said, “In developed countries, one can not find any unpacked food product. Accordingly, any food product must be offered in a package on the market to make sure they are healthy and hygienic.”

Highlights from the Cheese Regulation: Cheeses shall always be stored, transported and placed on the market at a temperature below 10 C˚. No ewe’s milk aroma, goat’s milk aroma, butter aroma or other similar dairy product aromatizer

shall be added to cheeses. Labels on cheese packages shall not contain misleading words like ‘farm cheese’, ‘traditional cheese’, ‘natural cheese’, etc. Kosher cheeses may be labeled ”aged” only if it is ripened for at least 120 days. Cheeses shall be classified into 4 main groups: whole fat, semi-skimmed, low-fat, and fat-free. Labels on the packaging of cheeses made from raw milk and placed on the market after being ripened shall state the date of production, and clearly read “produced from raw milk” and the period of ripening. Cheeses produced from non-pasteurized raw milk may be offered for sale only after they have been ripened for at least 4 months. Cheeses shall contain less salt than they do today. Production of blue cheeses shall be strictly controlled.

A regulation, titled “Cheese Regulation”, introduced by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock and published in Official Gazette of 8 February 2015, bans the placement of any unpacked cheese on the market as of 1 January 2016. The Regulation introduces new rules, governing the production, packaging, transport and marketing of cheese.

Two different sets of numbers, one set being visible and the other hidden, will be printed on the packaging of all the products in 6 groups initially selected.

The set of numbers hidden under an orange sticker on the label will be used to inquire about the safety of product.

Consumers will remove sticker to view the inquiry numbers on the product they purchase to inquire about the safety of the product via the Internet, or a mobile application, SMS or voice response system.

The smart labels will also contain warnings, such as “do not consume with alcoholic drinks” in case of energy drinks, allergen warnings in case of baby foods, “Not substitute for medication” or “Not intended for treatment of diseases” in case of food supplements.

Before buying a product, consumers should check the label on the product to see if it is damaged or manipulated, and should avoid buying the product if it has no label on it or its label is damaged.

The label will provide information on all the processes through which the product has gone until it has reached the consumer. The consumer will enter the code number on the label to the system to find out the producer, or the country of origin (if imported), expiry date, contents and all allergen components, if any, contained in the product. This will be possible even if the label on the product was replaced, or its expiry date was changed, or even if the label does not provide information on the allergen components contained in the product.

How wil l the System work?

The Product Verification and Tracking System, intended to prevent forgery and counterfeit products and help consumers access to safe food, was launched in 2016. Postponed for the last in May 2015, the System was put into practice officially on 31 December 2015 and help consumers check the safety of any food product they intend to buy at supermarkets. Stating that packaging is integral part of food safety, Sadettin Korkut, President of the Turkish Packaging Manufacturers Association (ASD) said, “Packaging is an essential means of communication that can be used to ensure food safety and, with the help of the label on it, to inform consumers about the food product they intend to buy. Ensuring food product traceability will protect consumers against counterfeit products that could pose serious risk to their health and will also prevent both dissemination of misleading information on products and illegal production.”

Cost-benefit Analysis Stating that, as part of the Turkish packaging industry, their production capacity is capable of responding to expansions of any size in the domestic manufacturing industry, Korkut said a cost-benefit analysis of the System should be made and commented: “We believe a proper cost-benefit analysis of the new System should be made. For instance, the System may be put into practice gradually, applying to certain categories of food products in the first place. Taking steps without first making the necessary preparation would both increase packaging imports and push packaging costs up, though temporarily.”

Countdown to Smart Labels

TURKISH PACKAGING INDUSTRY FOCUS

Packaging holds an increasingly important place in the purpose-oriented marketing, and particularly in the exportation, of various agricultural and food products and other non-food products made in the existing and developing branches of industry in Turkey. Meanwhile, for the last few years, although the economic recession in the manufacturing sector of the contained final product is reflected also to the packaging sector, developments in packaging, quality improvements, rationalisation and environmental conformance actions taken for the main and auxiliary substances have been in progress both in global markets, particularly in developed countries, and in Turkey. Moreover, as new production plants are added to the manufacturing industry, Turkish Packaging Sector, in an effort to meet demands, demonstrates faster development than the EU countries with advanced economies which have relatively saturated packaging markets.

TURKISH PACKAGING EXPORTS BY YEARS (BILLION $)

For the last ten years there have been significant changes in life standards due to the increases in the average per capita income. Growing urbanization trend, increasing average lifespan, increasing involvement of women in working life, changing consumption habits and consumer expectations lead to the development of self service methods in centers of consumption and encourage the country-

wide spreading of chain hipermarkets, supermarkets and markets which make direct sales to consumers. In the meantime the said retail sales systems support the development and use of serving-based packaging. Likewise consumers have the opportunity to find a wider range of products, quality and reliable products at affordable prices and a balance between price and quality in markets with a large marketing area. Apart from that, factors such as customer service, sales point promotions, special discounts, free product vouchers encourage customers to do shopping in markets. In short, chain marketing and shopping centres feed the system of sales from shelf and, consequently, the demand for packed products.

SIZE OF PACKAGING SECTOR

PACKAGING INDUSTRY GROWING FAST

Packaging sector basically does not manufacture to stock. Manufacturing depends on orders. Therefore, production can be considered as equal to consumption. On the other hand, due to the lack of statistical data in the country, production figures may

only be obtained with a delay of about one year from the works of specialised sector associations and from various resources and intermediate periods are calculated by extrapolation based on some assumptions.

One of the few trade surplus-generating industries in Turkey, the packaging industry has been writing a success story through its valueadded and sustainable production model. While the global packaging industry is growing by an average of 3%, the Turkish packaging industry has been growing by an average of 15% since 2011. The Turkish Packaging Manufacturers Association (ASD)released its report “Turkish Packaging Industry 2015”, which provides some comparative data on the packaging market’s dimension and position both in Turkey and the rest of the world and also and analyzes the industry’s export and import figures.

The report suggests that, as new production plants are popping up in the global industry, the Turkish packaging industry is growing faster than its developed competitor in the EU to meet the ever growing demand. According to the report, where the global packaging industry growing by an average of 3% is expected to reach a turnover of USD 820 billion in 2016, the US packaging industry is the world’s biggest packaging consumer with its USD 137 billion worth of industry, and it is followed by China in the ranking with a demand volume of USD 80 billion. It is projected that China, growing at a fast pace, will leave the US behind in 2017.

IMPROVING PERFORMANCE SINCE 2011

EMPLOYMENT AND NUMBER OF COMPANIES ANDREGIONAL DISTRIBUTION OF COMPANIES

The report provides striking details on Turkey… Having survived the 2008-2009 global financial crisis, without any slump in 2008 and with a slight contraction in 2009, the Turkish packaging industry embarked on a fast growth route as of 2010, closing the year with a production growth rate of 18%. The industry went further up, recording a production volume of 6 million tons and a USD 12 billion turnover in 2011, 6.4 million tons and USD 14 billion in 2012, 6.9 million tons and USD 16.2 billion in 2013. In 2014, the industry’s production volüme grew by 6% to 7.3 million tons, while its turnover increased 5.5% to reach USD 17 billion. Having recorded an annual growth rate of at least 15% since 2011, the industry maintained its growth trend in 2014 at a rate nearly twice that of the national economy.

It is estimated that in this sector 90.000 - 100.000 people are employed in about 3.000 workplaces with various sizes. This is a technology-dominated rather than labor-intensive sector. Packaging companies are established very close to manufacturing industries. They are most intensely located in İstanbul, followed by İzmir/Manisa and then by various places

in Anatolia. The following graph shows the distribution in our country according to a review made in mid 2015. Figures should not be interpreted as a weight of capacity, but only as the number of companies. Therefore, a single company in a region may have the capacity equal to the total of a large number of companies in that region.

According to the 2014 production data provided in the report by packaging material types, the production of plastic packaging grew 38%, corrugated cardboard packaging 27%, glass packaging 15%, wooden packaging 7%, cardboard packaging 6%, metal packaging 5%, and paper packaging 2%. The industry also performed well in foreign trade in 2014, recording an increase of 8% in terms of export volume and 9% in terms of value.

The industry exported 696,569 tons of packaging in the first 6 months of 2014 and improved that figure up to 790.680 tons in the first 6 months of 2015. Apparently, the industry will keep growing at its current pace. It is projected in the report that the overall value of the Turkish packaging industry will stand somewhere between USD 18 and 19 billion by the end of 2015, and this will positively affect our national economy worth of some 300 or 320 billion USD.

A Glimpse in to the Realm of Packaging Packaging is a part of a total system which processes raw material into a product and delivers it through a marketing chain to the consumer. There are various other definitions of Packaging. It may be defined as a means of ensuring the safe delivery of a product to the ultimate consumer in a sound condition at the minimum overall cost or it as the art, science and technology of preparing goods for transport and sale or simply by saying that a package must sell what it protects, and protects what it sells. Most of these definitions are related to the functions of Packaging. The basic packaging functions have different levels of importance depending on the particular packaging level and intended destination. Some of the basic functions of packaging are given below:

Containment: This function is always related to the time factor. The package has to contain the product and the time period the package can maintain the quality of the product from the time it is packed is related to the Containment function of the packaging material.

Protection and Preservation: Protection of the product packed from outside environment like gases, moisture, micro-organisms etc. and exigencies of the journey between the manufacturer and ultimate user. In some instances, package

may provide an environment suitable for the product when outside conditions are unsuitable.

Preservation is inhibition of chemical and biological changes in the packed product and is in fact it’s maintenance of sterility or extension of shelf life.

Communication: The package has to identify the contents and also sell the product. To promote the contained product effectively, the package must appeal to the customer.

Convenience: Convenience refers to such factors as easy opening and handling and also convenience relating to the storage, inspection, inventory control of the packages.

Machine Performance: Packaging material used in packing of products must be capable of performing satisfactorily and economically on package making, forming, filling and closing machines.

Designing of a Package has to be done keeping in mind the required functional characteristics of the Package and the type of product to be packed. The Package designing for a liquid product will be quite different from that of a solid product. The

size, weight, nature of the surface of the product, type of protection needed, its sensitivity to moisture, gasses, light, microorganisms, shelf life of the product etc. have to be taken into consideration in designing a package.

The method of distribution of the packed product and the journey involved in the distribution chain has to be carefully considered during the designing stage of the package. Designing of the package that has to be sent by airfreight will be different from what has to be transported on land by a lorry or inside a container by ship as loose cargo.

Market considerations in relation both to the product and the distribution method too have to be given prominence place in designing of a package.

Proper assessment of the products to be packed has to be done prior to the designing stage of the package for any product. The physical form of the product and its general nature has to be considered in selecting the material or type of packaging to be used.

PRODUCT ASSESSMENT

PHYSICAL FORM GENERAL NATURE

Gas Corrosive

Mobile liquid Toxic

Viscous liquid Volatile

Paste Odorous

Liquid + solids Perishable

Powder (free flowing?) Sticky

Granules Corrosive

Tablets Fragile

Capsules Abrasive

Solid block Easily marked

A package designed for a volatile Gas will be quite different from a package designed for a perishable solid like biscuit. Unless the correct Package is designed to suit a particular product having any of the above physical forms it can get damaged due to various factors some of which are given below.

The package designed for a particular product that may get damaged by any of the above damage causing factors should be tested to check whether the package would withstand the threat of damage after packing.

HOW CAN IT BE DAMAGED?

By mechanical shock? Fragility factor By oxygen? How?

By vibration? Frequency range By odours? Which?

By abrasion? Surface finish By light? Fading

By crushing? Safe load By spoilage? Chemical change

By temperature changes?

Safe rangeBy incompatibility with

materials?Which ones?

By moisture and r.h. changes

Critical values By rodents, or insects? Specific

The critical level for each damage causing factor for different products has to be determined. For example the fragility factor for a pack of glass bottles of known specifications could be determined by using equipment available and lay down the required standard for the Packaging material. After determining the critical level it is possible to test the packaging material at the production stage to determine whether the material conforms to required standards.

Similarly if a food product that gets deteriorated with ingress of Oxygen, the critical level at which the Food starts getting deteriorated could be determined and a standard could be laid down giving the maximum Oxygen transmission rate that could be allowed for the packaging material that has to be used to pack the product. Even after using a package that could protect the product from all above damage causing factors it may still be unsatisfactory.

HOW CAN THE PACKAGE BE UNSATISFACTORY?• Admits dirt• Leaks• Not sift proof• Not compatible with product o Transfers odours or flavours to product o Causes corrosion of product o Reacts chemically o Loses strength in contact with product• Easily pilfered• Stains easily

If the correct closure is not used to close a container it may leave room for extraneous matter to enter the package. If a laminated flexible pouch after filling with a product is not sealed properly or the mouth of a multi walled sack filled with tea or other product is not sealed properly, moisture and air could enter through the poorly sealed mouth and contaminate the product. If the sealing strength of a packed and gas flushed pouch is poor the gas inside can leak out gradually or if the mouth of a flexible pouch that has been used for vacuum packaging is not sealed properly air can enter the pouch through the sealed area due to poor sealing.

If a product sensitive to moisture or gases is packed in a pouch with a high moisture transmission rate or a high gas transmission rate; moisture, gasses or even volatile agents from other products stored nearby can pass through the packaging material and the packed product could pick up the odour of other products contaminating the product inside giving different odours and flavours to the product and also may cause it’s deterioration.

Similarly flavours and odours of the packed product or gases from gas flushed packs can escape out if the product is packed in material with poor gas barrier properties. Trapped solvent between layers of films during solvent

lamination can pass through the inner heat sealing layer that may have poor barrier properties to gases in pouches, contaminating the packed product and similarly strong volatile agents found in some products like certain spices can escape out through the inner heat sealing layer of the laminates forming the pouches and destroy the adhesive layer used in the lamination process as well as the printing ink found in the inner surface of the outer barrier film used unless the inner heat sealing layer has comparatively high barrier properties to gases.

Compatibility of the packaging material with that of the product has to be considered carefully before selecting the type of packaging material that has to be used. Leaching or migration of additives and unpolymerized monomers in polymer films used to pack products could contaminate the contents causing taste or odour change. Eg. Ethylene from PE and Vinyl Chloride from PVC. Contamination from printing inks, varnishes, solvents could be potential hazards. It is not recommended to use material based on the following elements in printing food packs which are direct or incidental contact with food.

Lead, Arsenic, Chromium, Copper, Cadmium, Antimony and MercuryIn certain instances the packaging material may pick up chemical entities from the solutions of the food and beverages. One good example for this phenomenon called “Dilute solution absorption” is the reaction of certain edible oils on the surface of Polyethylene containers.. Edible oils when packed in PE containers, Heptanes /Hexane contents in oil (non- polar in nature) disturb the surface of PE which turns gummy in storage in prolonged storage (water in PE containers does not pick up)

In order to provide the suitable conditions for the food products to have the desired shelf life they have to be packed

in the right packaging material having required barrier properties.

Material having puncture resistant properties has to be selected in designing a flexible package for a food product or any other object with irregular or rough surface to prevent damage, pin holing leading to reduction in the strength of the pack. The designing of a package could not be considered satisfactory if it is not pilfer proof to avoid pilfering of parts of packed product or to avoid wilful insertion of extraneous material after packing.

Overcoming methods of distribution hazards like loading and unloading, movement while in vehicles, warehousing and climatic factors have to be looked into in designing a secondary packaging. These distribution hazards may be Mechanical like dropping of packs during handling and transporting, stacking in positions that may cause damage,

stacking several high that may lead to damage when the packs drop down from high elevations, dropping on to an uneven and rough floor from a high stack, impacts with other packages that are identical or are of similar or different material, vibration with or without stacking loads and crushing forces in stacks, nets and slings.

The distribution hazards may also be climatic like coming in contact with liquid water from rain, sea spray or condensation, Inclement Humidity causing loss or gain of moisture, corrosion or physical changes and unsatisfactory temperatures Causing melting, emulsion breaking, embrittlement and deterioration.

Market considerations related to the product, its retail outlet, the targeted customers, type of package, convenience and use, graphics and design too have to be clearly understood prior to deciding development of a proper package to suit a given product.
