PACIFIC COAST TOURS T H E R E are many attractive routes to the Pacific Coast, but every traveller should select the Canadian Pacific if he wishes his tour to e m b r a c e themostinterestingandremarkable display of mountain scenery to be found anywhere in the world. From Montreal and Toronto, through trains are op- erated to Winnipeg and Vancouver, or, if desired, the Company's splendid Great Lakes Steamships may be used between Owen Sound or Sault Ste. Diverging f rom the main l ine o f the CanadianPacific at Dunmore, an attractive alternative route isoffered to the Pacific Coast via the Crow's Nest Branch,through the great ranching districts of Southern Albertaand the vast mining regions of the Kootenay; thence byway of Nelson, the Columbia River, and Arrow Lakesto Revelstoke, where the main line is joined for con-tinuance o f trip, as already described. T h i s rai l andwater route, combining the fascinating beauty of valley,lake and mountain, appeals strongly to tourists becauseof its varied general attractiveness.

Traveling one way via the Canadian Rockies, thetrip through the Kootenay i n the reverse directionmakes a particularly attractive and enjoyable tour.

ST. PAUL-SPOKANE-PORTLANDTHROUGH SERVICE

Another route is by the Crow's Nest Line via Kings-gate and Spokane t o Portland. A t Kingsgate t heInternational Boundary is crossed and the l ine thenruns through a country remarkable for its scenic attract-iveness a n d wonderfully r i ch bo th i n mining andagriculture.

SP0KANE, WASH., is the commercial metropolis o fthe "Inland Empire," and a good example of the pro-gressive western c i ty. I t has many f ine buildings,parks and pleasant driveways.

Continuing from Spokane the route lies through ahighly productive wheat and grain country. Crossingfrom Washington into Oregon, the valley of the Colum-bia is followed, and that majestic stream is seldom outof sight of the railway for the remainder of the journey.

PORTLAND, appropriately designated as the "RoseCity," is beautifully situated near the confluence of theWillamette and Columbia rivers, in the midst of a richagricultural country. I t is a thoroughly modern ci tywith well-kept streets, handsome business buildingsand dwellings. T h e climate is pleasant and healthful.

Passengers en route to California have the choice ofeither an overland trip or sea voyage from North Coastpoints.

THE ALASKA TRIP

T HIS t r ip is unquestionably unsurpassed fo r

beauty of scenery and novelty of experience,together with the general charm and interest

from ten to twelve at night and sunrise from two to threein the morning. I t embraces a visit to the home of thetotem pole, in the primitive Indian villages, to great icefields and glaciers, magnificent mountains and pictur-esque fiords, and has also innumerable other attractionsat the various ports of call.

Canadian Pacific steamers, "Princess M a y " and"Princess Royal," maintain weekly service from Victoriaand Vancouver to Alaska. T h e y are designed especiallyfor this service with a view to the comfort and safety ofpassengers, and no expense has been spared to make themmodels in appointments and construction. T h e y havelarge and comfortable observation rooms on the forwardpromenade deck, fine commodious smoking rooms, wire-less telegraphy, and all modern appliances for safety.

Wrangell is an enterprising business city. T h e pas-sage through Wrangell Narrows is one4f the most inter-esting of the entire trip.

Juneau is also an industrious town, noted as a gold-.mining center. T h e largest stamp-mill i n the world

is situated a t the Treadwellmines.
