It is possible that the trouble which is now brewing~mong the miners in the Randsburg mining district.In. Kun County, may result in a general strike. TheMiners' Cnion demands an increase in wages to $3.50for miners and $3 for muckers. The Yellow .as.terCo~pany. ~be largest in the district, has postednohce~ saYlD~ tha t the union would no longer berecog~JZed. Ihe matter probablj' will be taken up b)'the Y\ estern Federation of Miners, which is now insession in DeD\'cr.

The Los .Angeles Chamber of Commerce has passedresolutions asking the supervisors of In)"o and SanBernardino counties, California, and of Lincoln andKye counties, Xevada, to est..'lbli ..h wells of waterin the desert and also to erect sign posts to showtheir locations. It is said that there can be noreasonable doubt but that valuable undiscoveredmines exist in the desert regions, particularly thoseportions near Death Valley, which are now almostinaccessible in summer because of tile heat and lackof water. With wells and guide posts pro\"ided, theentire region, it is thought, can be prospected, evenin the hottest. portions of the year.

....- It is stated that the present production of theGold Peak mine, near Victoriaville, San BernardinoCounty, is $6,000 per month, with expenses of $2,000per month, leaving a neat profit for dividends. Newore bodies are being rapidly opened up, &nd thesuperintendent says that the present profits arelikely to <"Ontinue for a. long time.

The Pacifio Coast Borax Company is making anew departure In the line of lraction transportatJonIn connect.ion with its new borax mines in SouthernCalifornia, .A 12·miJe railroad gives connection withthe Santa. fe rood at Daggett, The company hasbeen milling at Borate, CaL, for some years, but theexpense of operating has been increasi.ng la-tely, adepth of 600 feet having been reached. There is 8tilla large quantit.y of borax to be taken out here, butthe company will suspend operations and transferthe miners to the new borax mine, which is now beingdenloped by a force of 30 men. About 100 minerswill be required in all, Shafts will be sunk and tunnels and drifts run the same as in quartz mining. There is SOme placer ground, but water is very scarce. The long haul from this mine to t.he Santa Fe Rail·road branch at Ivanpah will be made by trains ofelectric cars running without rails over a macadam·ized roa.d 100 miles in length, The new system willbe given a trial next Spring, taking the place of thewagon traill"~ hauled by 20-mule tea.ms. About 100men are working on tbe road, which is being BUb

stantially constructed, from 10 to 12 feet in widthund with no grades exceeding 6 per cent, Ther.are Rome heavy rock cuts on the line. The rQad wascommenced lust June and is more than half completed.
