If the Professional Van Operator is the backbone of the company, what is the sales department? The lungs that fill the

body with oxygen. Then what is customer service? They are the nervous system, making sure the body knows what

causes comfort and what causes pain. If that’s true, what are the branch offices? Why, the branches are the arms and

legs, the fingers and the toes.

As long as we are working on this analogy, let me tell you what the local and long distance opera-

tions folks are…they are the blood that carries the oxygen and healthy cells to all parts of the

body. And the corporate team? The folks at HQ are the gray matter that regulate the systems of

the body, to fight off infections and keep the organs functioning. And the marketing depart-

ment? They are the ears and the nose.

We now know the results of the Safe Driver Week that occurred a few months ago we would like to share!

We are always working to better ourselves and our drivers for not only the safety of the public roadways, but for the drivers them-

selves! Commercial motor vehicle (CMV) enforcement personnel patrolled roadways during Operation Safe Driver Week, July 15-

21, 2018, to identify CMV drivers and passenger vehicle drivers engaged in unsafe driving behaviors. Officers issued 57,405 cita-

tions and 87,907 warnings to drivers throughout the week. This safe driving enforcement and awareness campaign aims to call atten-

tion to driver behaviors, the main cause of crashes, and combat those behaviors through heightened traffic safety enforcement and

educational outreach.

The top five citations issued to CMV drivers were: State/Local Laws – 6,008 citations

Speeding – 1,908 citations

Failing to use a seat belt while operating a CMV – 1,169 citations

Failure to obey a traffic control device – 754 citations

Using a handheld phone – 262 citations

Speeding was the second most cited infraction for both CMV drivers and passenger vehicle drivers. According to the National High-

way Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2016, 18 percent of drivers involved in a fatal crash were speeding at the time of the

crash and 27 percent of those killed were in a crash involving at least one speeding driver.

Failure to wear a seat belt was the third most cited offense for both CMV drivers and passenger vehicle drivers. As a percentage of

the total number of citations, failure to wear a seat belt represented 10.9 percent of Operation Safe Driver Week CMV driver cita-

tions.

NHTSA research found that of the total number of people killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2016, 48 percent were not wearing a

seat belt. Seat belts could have saved an estimated 2,456 people if they had been wearing one. For professional drivers specifically,

safety belt usage by commercial truck and bus drivers was at 86 percent in 2016, according to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Admin-

istration (FMCSA) survey data.

When it comes to distracted driving, 211 passenger vehicle driver citations during Operation Safe Driver Week were for texting; 20

texting citations were issued to CMV drivers. 127 passenger vehicle drivers and 262 CMV drivers were cited for using a handheld

phone.

According to NHTSA, in 2016, 3,450 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted dr ivers. NHTSA also

estimated that of the total number of roadway deaths, crashes and injuries, 660,000 drivers were using an electronic device while

behind the wheel. Of the total number of fatal crashes, 10 percent involved the use of a phone.

Specific to CMV drivers, 17 were cited for operating their vehicle while ill or fatigued, and 14 received citations for using/equipping

their CMV with a radar detector.

Safe Driver Week In Review

January seems to be an important month for Fred DeLuna who was born in Whittier, CA, in Janu-

ary, and then moved to Downey, CA when he was still a baby. He has lived in Downey with his

parents, two brothers and a sister for over 23 years. Fred started working with line drivers as a help-

er, and, after a couple of seasons, was hired by Ace 25 as a helper in January 2017. In January

2018, Fred was promoted to Driver.

People around Ace 25 know that Fred is a big sports enthusiast, especially football. Fred is a life-

long Rams fan, and when they announced (in January of 2016) they were moving back to Southern

California, it was a dream come true. Fred is also a big player of Fantasy Football. He plays in, and

manages, several leagues each season. Fred has a good eye for talent and does well in Fantasy Foot-

ball. The first ever sporting event that his dad took him to was a baseball game at Dodgers stadium

when he was very young. A true LA sports fan!

When asked what he liked best about working at Ace, he said his co-workers. He said that they

have a cool vibe and are good to work with. His love for his job shows because recently Fred has received three perfect scores on

Military evaluations.

Fred has been a great addition to the Ace 25 team, and we are proud to have him on it.

When asked about the future, Fred said that he would like to become a local contractor. His younger brother has been working as

well, and would like to be on Fred’s crew. During the slow season, Fred plans on completing his PUC application and testing to take

the first steps toward going into business for himself. Maybe that will happen in January?

Hello from Orlando!

Wow, this summer went by quick, but still doesn’t seem to be quite over. A special thanks to all of our crews, staff and

PVOs across the country that helped pull all of this together for another successful busy season.

It was another record summer for our Orlando branch, we broke one million dollars in revenue in June, July and Au-

gust. Way to go team!! We will also be accepting the Milt Hill award for 2 years running, so thank you to our PVOs,

you play the biggest part of making that happen.

We have made some additions to our staff here in Orlando, starting with sales. With the help of Larry and Richard we

were able to bring on Jill Knicely. Jill is a corporate account sales representative with twenty years of experience and

will help us build national account business in the southeast region. In the office, Angie Ramirez has taken on the re-

sponsibilities of storage and military coordinator. Angie moved here from Michigan in April, I think she will enjoy our

winters. Janet Beeler has been with Ace over a year, in April we asked Janet to handle our commercial services and

storage accounts. Once she conquered the WISE learning curve, she has done an excellent job coordinating our projects

and commercial moves. Yolanda Castro has been working in our operations department for the past 4 years, in January

Yolanda was promoted to local dispatcher where she has done a great job.

Terri Anne Wytrwal celebrated her 10th anniversary with Ace in March. Other anniversaries were Candace Kidd - 9

years, Oscar Hernandez - 7 years, Michelle Dillard - 5 years and Angel Resto - 5 years.

Our crews and local capacity continue to grow as our contractors Steve Chucka, Ricky Cisco and Curt Maes, along

with our operations department, are constantly recruiting and training high quality drivers and helpers. We believe in

growing within our organization; this year a congratulations to Carlos Valecillos and Sean Munoz who both started as

helpers and are now class A drivers. Alex Chucka also returned to us this year as a class A driver.

Our HHG storage business remains strong. Starting in June and still going, we have been running at capacity or close to

it. Our commercial warehouse is starting to feel the squeeze as we have started handling a large hotel project for

Wyndam Resorts. Kyle Ferris brought this job in at the perfect time of year for us. The retail sales team of Candace

Kidd, Amanda Cooper and Michelle Dillard continue to work and build our referral business with new business and

opportunities. Ace Orlando was recently featured in an article for a Realtor’s magazine “Real Producers” where

Candace Kidd and myself were interviewed about our company. Great exposure, and good pictures of our crews on the

job, this came as a direct result of Candace’s networking efforts.

Thank you everyone on the Ace Team for making 2018 a successful year.

Claims Prevention Tips by PVO Tim Ruddle (Ace 25)

Reg & Kathy’s Crew on the Move - The 2018 Breast Cancer Walk

PVO Tim Ruddle, who’s been driving for over 15 years, shares some claims prevention tips.

Conduct a thorough walk-through.

- Inspect all the floors and doorways for any damage. Make any damages known to the customer and

have an existing damage form completed. Take photos or videos of damage during walk through.

- Take your time doing walk-throughs. If going into storage use colorful descriptions of items in or-

der to identify them easily.

Prioritize the Part Box

- As soon as the Parts Box is off the truck place it on a counter that cannot be touched until the entire house is unpacked. Explain to

the customer the importance of the Parts Box, especially if it’s out of storage. Assign one main person to be in charge of the Parts

Box and only open it when it’s time for reassembly.

- A more detailed Parts Box practice is to bundle all parts that are for the same piece of furniture. Place that bundle on the inventory

sheet. For example, place all screws for the bunk bed in a bag and give it its own number. Write this bundle on the inventory list to

make sure it gets checked off.

Simple Tip for Disassembly

- When taking things apart, label all parts with the same number as the furniture. That will make assembly faster and easier.

Home Protection musts

- Take your time and make sure all walls are covered before beginning move.

- Use plenty of runners to protect hardwood floors. Pad all doors.

- Use the proper tape – a light adhesive tape. Don’t leave tape down for any longer than needed so that it doesn’t stick to surface.

Get Organized

- Create labels with the proper (local) Ace logo, registration number and customer’s name and place on every box.

The Making Strides Cancer walk has become a tradition here in San Diego for over 10 years. We walk

for everyone who has been touched by this horrible disease in our Ace/ARCA family and beyond.

The walk will be on Sunday, October 21. Come join us if you can!

Last year Ace was in 10th place for total donations in the San Diego walk, and we want to move up a

few spots!

Connie Shutters, our team leader here in San Diego, has already started raising money by selling ice cream treats on Friday and

snacks during the week. Other fundraisers are coming in September! We are counting on each branch to find a creative way to raise

money and contribute to this cause.

Send your cash and checks to Connie by Monday October 15th to count for the match.

To donate by credit card and/or join the walking team use this link: http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR/?

Something new this year!

Larry Lammers has promised that if we raise $5,000 in donations that not only will Ace match that amount, but he will wear

a pink tutu on the walk. So empty those pockets and let’s get the tutu!
