PAAlumni NEWSLETTER When I see alumni come back or reach out to later generations of PAA, I cannot help but believe that they do so out of love for a space that helped to cultivate them, and that only inspires me to continue doing work in an organization with such a legacy. You were here. You know our struggles. You’ve done the “Isang Bagsak.” And we would not be here today if it wasn’t for you. Each member of PAA, past and present, has done his or her part in shaping the organization. Such work should always be remembered and appreciated. I hope that PAA can strengthen its relationships with alumni, not only to help its own growth, but to also support those who contributed so much to it in the past. I wish you all to see this effort in reaching out to you as a step towards that stronger relationship. It is also a representation of our appreciation: an indication that we haven’t forgotten the people who came before us and made this organization what it is today. In the rest of this short newsletter, you will find introductions to this year’s CORE, pictures from the Fall 2012 semester, and a message concerning a project that needs your help. I hope you can take a few moments out of your time to look over these items. Each year, the Pilipino American Alliance strives to serve the Pilipin@ community by promoting a network of social support through the encouragement of academic excellence, political struggle, and cultural awareness. In addition, we always encourage our CORE members, interns, and general members to take the skills and hystory they’ve learned in this 43-year-old space and apply them to a larger setting, whether it be the Pilipin@ community, the UC Berkeley community, or a larger community outside of UC Berkeley. The work that PAA does is both for the community’s growth and for individual growth.

Fostering leaders is an important commitment intrinsic to PAA’s purpose, and it is with this in mind that we hope to launch an Alumni Mentorship Program for CORE and interns. With this program, we hope that you will help to provide our members with guidance for life after college. There will also be opportunities for alumni mentors to provide guidance as former CORE members, but the primary objective of this program concerns

the paths that begin after the undergraduate education. We ask that mentors help mentees in choosing and succeeding in specific careers or graduate paths. Ideally, mentors and mentess will develop relationships that endure beyond the first semester of pairing. The idea is similar in nature to the Kuya-Ate-Ading program.

Right now, I would like to launch a pilot version of the program, in hopes that by the end of Spring 2013, we can officially implement this program. Within the next month, I will be sending out a survey to all the alumni within my reach. If you are interested in mentoring a current PAA member, I encourage you to fill out the survey when it comes your way.

In addition, I believe that this is a wonderful opportunity to provide a space for alumni to be involved and give back to PAA, if they so choose. Please know how greatly your participation will be appreciated.

Thank you!
