HOWDY, HOWDY!!I may not look it, but I’m as old as dem der hills. I’ve been

around this here camp for nearly twenty years, and my original Girl Scout Troop girls are turning 36 this year!! Never too old to

keep havin’ fun, I say! This year is a mite diff’rent. Since we all need to socially

distance while eatin’ (& un-masked!) I figgered all the girls would need a sit-upon to spread out when they eat. I will be

handing out supplies and giving a quick scheduled lesson to all Daisy, Brownie & Junior units at the flag station on the first day of your camp. Then I will send you back to your units with the

supplies for each girl to assemble her sit-upon. Older girls may make sit-upons in their spare time or bring their own from

home.

How to be a counselor, not a camper (Noodles):

•Treat it like a fun summer job• Little campers don’t see you as young kids, they see you as PA’s.

• Don’t be intimidated by older PA’s

• Be sure to establish clear boundaries (climbing, holding hands); know what you are comfortable with.

Page 13: PA Training 2021 Mountaindale North Day Camp

How to be a counselor, not a camper continued (Grizzly):

• Your role as PA begins the minute you arrive at Mountaindale and ends when you leave (unless a bus PA).

• Girls are watching you closely, be a positive role model

• Make sure you are not just “hanging” out with your Co-PA but engaging with the campers (this is your primary job).

• Make sure that all girls are interacting with each other. Be extra mindful of the girl who maybe doesn’t know any of the other campers.

Page 14: PA Training 2021 Mountaindale North Day Camp

Conflicts with campers (Sparky):

• Minor discipline reminders are appropriate from a PA

• Serious disciplinary incidents will be handled by adults.

• Instead of “don’t do____,” say “do____”

• Do not pick favorites when resolving conflicts

• Involve an adult leader is the conflict cannot be resolved

Page 15: PA Training 2021 Mountaindale North Day Camp

Interactions with CO-PA’s (Peaches)

• You will be with at least 1 other PA and potentially more

• Newer PA’s:don’t be afraid to ask older PA’s questions. They know that you are new and will have questions.

• Older PA’s: be kind and show patience with the younger PA’s. They are learning from you. Lead by example.

Page 16: PA Training 2021 Mountaindale North Day Camp

Conflicts with Adult Leaders/PA’s (Pumpkin)

1. Try to resolve it yourself. Talk to individual calmly and with a buddy2. Talk to PA Council.

3. Talk to Frenchy/Aran4. If you are on the receiving end of criticism, know that it took the other PA

courage to speak up and try to improve things. Do not argue but instead listen closely to the concerns and work together for a solution.
