Process: I used Illustrator to create my logo. First I traced an image of aninsect and then I used a type font called philosopher for the text. After I created my logo I used InDesign to create a simple foldingbrochure. For the image of theladybug and aphid I used the quick select tool in photo shop tocut out my image, I then used rene mask to smooth, feather, andapply contrast to the outline of the image.I then placed my image in InDesign and wrapped text aroundthe image.

Let the bugs ght your battle

Millions of dollars are spent on chemicalseach year to control pests on agricultural andornamental crops.

Chemicals are dangerous to human andenvironmental health, but there isa solution.

Benecial insects have controlled thepopulation of pest insects for thousands ofyears, and with the help of Assassin’s BioControls you can use this natural process tocontrol pests in your retail nursery, greenhouse complex, or home garden.

A ssassin’S Bio Controls

Things to know

Once you notice a pest on you plants it is often too late to control the problemwithout removing the plant or resorting to chemical sprays, so the key to using bio con-trols is to use them as a preventative part of your pest managment program. It wouldbe a good idea to invest in some sticky traps and spend some time monitoring to ndout what pests you have.

Once you know what pests are on your plants, learn about their life cycle so you knowwhat predator insects to use as a control. It is important to learn what predator insectsto use on each pest because if you release a predator without pests insects to eat thatpredetor will soon die and you will have wasted your money.

One of the biggest st ruggles with using benecial insects is notbeing afraid of seeing pests on your plants. Predator insects

will control the pests but will not eliminate them, andthe key is to establish a balance between keeping the

populat ion down but not out of con- t rol.

What are

beneficial

insects? Most everyone knows theimportance of insects likebees who are majorpollinators in nature, butmost people do not realizethat there are many otherinsect that play animportant role in theecosystem. These insectsare the natural enemies ofmany garden pests such asaphids, mites, thrips, andscale insects. This meansthere is a non-toxicapproach to controllingthese bothersome pests.

  What’s the deal with chemicals?

The problem with chemical pest controls is that they are not selective of the bugs theykill, which means that the good bugs get killed along with the bad. Once there are nomore predators to keep the population of pests in check, the bad bugs return with avengeance. When use chemicals, continual applications are necessary to keep the pestproblems from getting out of control. Another drawback of using chemicals is that in-sects will develop a resistance to the chemicals being used, so other more toxic chemi-cals have to be applied to keep ahead of the pests. With benecial insects you will neverhave to worry about the pests developing a resistance, and you will not have to spray somany chemicals.

Event Ad Description: A color full-bleed event ad promoting a fund raiser sponsored bya company of my choice using only Microsoft Word and a scanner.

Process: I scanned the bike image and decided not to change itother than enhancing the sharpness and lighting. I thoughtof the message I wanted for my event ad, and then I createdthe boxes for color and text. I chose a split complimentarycolor scheme of green, blue, and brick that matched thepicture. After working for a while I decided to add the mattextured boxes behind all my other boxes to give the de-sign depth and make it more interesting. I also combined asemi-transparent mat with solid green to create texture for

MontageDescription: An spiritual montage made by blending two images and incorpo-rating text.

Process: After loading both images into Photoshop I enhanced the natureimage to bring out the colors and make the image lighter. I select-ed the part of the image of the woman I wanted to use with the las-so tool using a 30% feather and dragged it onto the other image. Icreated an mask over the image of the woman and used the brushtool with a 30% strength to blend the two images together. I addedsome type with two contrasting fonts and I added a drop shadow tomake the text more legible. I had to adjust the color and sharpnessof the nature image and the text multiple times to get the colorsright before my design was nished.

For my second design I used the shape toolto create a box, then I chose two different fonts for my text. For the last effect I used the wrinkle tool to make the logolook like the woods. For my last logo I found an image of a

Sasquatch foot print and used the pen tool to trace the toes, then I found an image of a shoe print and used the pen toolto trace the tread markings. Then I put the text over the topand chose an appropriate color scheme.

Web Design

Description: Web page designed to showcase a personally designed logo

Process:

After inserted my image, I attached a pre-made CSS documentto my HTML., I then used the colors from my logo as the colorsfor my web page. I found these colors by opening Photoshopand using the eyedropper tool. I also changed my fonts to TimesNew Roman and Charcoal. I declared some backup fonts just incase the viewer’s browser doesn’t have these fonts. I also usedpadding around the logo and text so that they would not be tooclose to the edge of the web page. I made the foregroundslightly transparent so the background picture would be morevisible, and I stretched the foreground so it would ll up more ofmy web page.
