Animal Neglected Animals Receive Compassionate CareOn November first we responded with Washington County Sheriff’s deputies to a complaint of numerous animals living in deplorable conditions in an Aloha home.

After gaining permission, a Sheriff’s deputy entered the house and was overwhelmed by the strong odor of excrement. He saw a large number of animals in the house, including dogs, cats, chickens, exotic birds and goats. Authorities were told there were dead animals in the garage, but the garage was so filled with garbage they were unable to search that area.

Many of the animals were sick and some were close to death. The conditions inside the home were filthy and unfit for humans or animals to live in. The owners of the animals voluntarily gave up rights to most of the dogs

and cats to Washington County Animal Services. Three people, Nyls and Brenda White and their 24-year-old daughter Tessa White, were cited for Animal Neglect I and II.

Overall 47 dogs and cats were turned over to us and taken to our shelter. “Sadly, one kitten died and two other kittens and a cat were euthanized due to their extreme medical circumstances,” says Deborah Wood, manager of Washington County Animal Services.

The surviving animals received medical examinations. “We are seeing a number of medical problems, such as severe skin problems in some of the dogs, wounds in some of the cats and infections in some cats and dogs,” says Wood.

The shelter is committed to making sure that every animal that can be made healthy enough to become adoptable will receive the medical care it needs. After medical assessment and treatment, the animals may go to rescue groups or be put up for adoption at the shelter.

Finding their way to the compassionate care at Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter was the best thing that ever happened to these neglected animals. “We will treat these animals with the same care we treat our own pets,” says Wood.

Manager’s CornerBy Deborah Wood, Animal Services Manager

On November first, we got the call that no animal shelter wants to receive. The Sheriff’s Office had received a report of a houseful of dogs and cats—and they appeared to be in trouble.

We responded to the scene with the Sheriff’s Office. By the time the night was over, we had 19 dogs and 28 cats from inside the small house at our shelter. It was the largest hoarding case in our County in almost four years. It was heart-breaking to see the animals, crawling with fleas, some with life-threatening infections, all reeking of feces and urine.

But in addition to sadness, I had another emotion. I felt so proud of our shelter and the work we were doing for these animals. We had prepared long and hard for this day—and we rose to the occasion.

We’d built excellent relationships with the Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office, so we all worked together as a team to identify the problem and use our abilities to solve it.

Our four Animal Services Officers on duty that day worked until nearly midnight—every one volunteering for the task. Our Certified Veterinary Technician came back in to the shelter late at night to give the sickest animals first aid. By morning there was a veterinarian on duty providing forensic examinations of the animals, so that if the case goes to court, we can show evidence of the physical problems faced by each animal in that house. We worked with other shelters to provide the dogs and cats with specialized medical care. Our shelter was now well over capacity with animals, many needing special care. Without complaint, our shelter staff cared for each animal with the love and tenderness they give their own pets. And PeTCO volunteered to groom the dogs once their basic medical needs were met.

The situation that brought these animals to our shelter was sad. Our response was one of the proudest moments of my professional life. I want all of you who care about our shelter and who have supported our work over the years to share the pride that I feel.

We are truly making a difference. We know it most when the call comes—and we respond for the animals.

The HolidaysA Time to Adopt? Or Not? Don’t consider adoption if this is a hectic time of year for you. If you’re traveling or have lots of rowdy relatives coming for a visit, wait until a quieter time to consider a new pet.

Do consider adoption if this is quiet time for you. Lots of people have time off at the holidays, and it can be a great time to bond with a new pet.

Don’t surprise someone with the gift of a pet. If you know someone wants a new pet, give them an “IOU” for the adoption fee, and come together to look for the perfect animal. Give them a training book or pet toys for a gift under the tree.

Do have a lovely holiday season and give lots of love to the animals in your life!

Grover is a sweet old border collie who spent several weeks at the shelter. Turns out, he disappeared from his home in Multnomah County and his loving owners had been looking there. A Bonnie Hays volunteer recognized this darling dog and told his owners where they could find him. His lovely owner reclaimed the old boy and all are thrilled.

Kind People + Microchip = Return HomeMojo, a black domestic shorthair kitty, snuck into a home in Forest Grove and hid in a couch. The nice people retrieved the scared kitty from the couch and brought him to Bonnie Hays Small Animal Shelter. Mojo had a microchip, so we called his

owners. He had been missing for a month and a half—and traveled all the way from Tualatin to Forest Grove. To top it off, he gets around on just three legs. Mojo and his owners had a happy, happy reunion.

Fly Away HomeLadybug, Ladybug fly away...to your new home! Ladybug was returned 10 years after she was first adopted from Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter. A Bonnie Hays volunteer adopted Ladybug to provide her a wonderful new home for her golden years. Senior pets have things to offer—maturity, a well-developed personality and a willingness to just settle down and be companionable—that many younger pets just haven’t mastered. It can take years to get this great!

Belle ThrivesWhen Belle was adopted, she was pretty rough-looking—thin with porcupine injuries to her face and a touch of stress mange. The Great Dane/Rotweiller mix had been through a lot and finally came to Bonnie Hays after being removed from an unsatisfactory living situation. Now a gorgeous shiny reddish blonde, Belle is flourishing in her new home. After just four weeks in a manners class, her new owner says she has become “as close to perfect as possible” and loves to learn new things. A dog who was once doomed to an unhappy life is now cherished as “the definition of joy” and is a treasured member of her family.

Happy Reunions and New Beginnings

Why Donate During the Holiday Season? The holiday season is a time to cherish and honor those dear to us. Our animals give us so much—each and every day, all year long. What better time to honor them than during the holidays? As you look back on the past year and ahead to the new, please remember the animals awaiting homes at the Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter. It’s easy to make a tax deductible donation by coming in to the shelter, on line at washingtoncountypets.com, or through the mail. And you can feel good knowing 100% of your contribution goes directly to animal care. Not a penny goes to administrative or overhead costs.

Donor SpotlightJan Karius packed many things into her life: a long career with the Oregon Health Division, 30 years of service with the Air National Guard which included humanitarian work all over the world, and a deep and life-long connection with animals. Karius died of cancer at age 61 in May 2010.

She and her life partner Carrol Haines shared their lives with many dogs over the course of their 28 years together. While Karius was most comfortable as the one who documented things behind the scenes, she came to enjoy working with her dogs in agility and musical free style. Haines continues to dance with dogs, especially Breezee, Karius’ beloved Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

Haines says, “Jan always said to me that she hoped I would not be offended that she leave some of her money to the animals. She knew I could take care of myself and the animals could not, they need help. [It was] truly the way she saw life.”

With that philosophy in mind, Karius generously left more than $16,000 to the animals at the Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter by making the shelter one of the beneficiaries of her IRA. Her generous gift will continue to help the animals she loved so much for many years to come.

Thank You!We couldn’t do what we do every day without the hundreds of donations of food and other supplies we receive every year. There are too many individuals and companies to name but make no mistake about it—your generosity means the world to the animals and the people who care for them every day. Because of your generosity, our animals have warm beds, full tummies and extra comforts that help make them ready for their forever homes.
