TACTICS How To Fish The Long Pole
to bag up on your local commercial fi shery?Preston Innovations-backedAnt Rogers reckonsyou should, to stay ahead of the opposition.
Would You GoThis Long...his Long...P
icture the scene: you arrive at your
local fshery to fnd there has been a
heavy ground rost and all the pre-
match banter is about who will get the frst
bite! Things are not looking too good. Thento cap it all you draw a peg that has good
orm in the summer, but it defnitely isnt
summer today.
Theres an island within reach o your
peg, but only i you have 19 metres o
carbon to get there and oating poles
arent allowed. However, you take the
extra extensions needed rom your
holdall and set about targeting the
island, and you are the only one
to attempt to fsh it with a pole.
Five hours later you need help
heaving your three keepnets
out o the water and weigh
in a new winter matchrecord o 180lb, and
second place is a modest 42lb. Sounds too
good to be true? Not i youre Ant Rogers!
This was the exact scenario he aced
in a winter-league round and he even
surprised himsel with the overall outcome.I never even imagined that sort o weight
was possible, commented Ant. You fsh
these matches looking or a
section win to help your
team win the day.
I didnt catch
much early on
because I fshed
a line at 14.5
metres to see what
was in the peg and
only shipped out

just 10lb in the frst hour. Its hard work
but there are ways to make it easier or
yoursel. A lot o anglers asked me ater the
match how I did it, so Ive brought the APF
cameras along to the same peg to show
how to make the most o the long, long,
long pole!
The venue is question is Izaak WaltonFishery, near Chebsey in Staordshire. Its
a well-established our-lake fshery only
yards away rom the cottage where Izaak
Walton once lived, many years ago. Ant
added: I dont live too ar away rom here,
so I like to fsh the teams-o-three league in
winter. Its a very competitive league that
means you have to fsh very well on each
round to win your section.
There are several pegs on
the bottom lake that
are within reach
o a 19m
pole.

ROLLERS
To get the best from your collection of rollers they need to be in the
right positions. This will allow you to ship backeasier and quicker.I like
to have one quite close behind me to take the strainvery quickly as I
ship back. I like to position it about four metres behind me and at a
slight angle. If you are right-handed like me then you will tend to strike
to the left, bringing the butt sections behind you round to the right. This
is where the roller should be. The second roller should be positioned
well back, at around the join between the 16msection and the 17.5m
extension. This roller should be higher than the front roller so youship
backwith the butt higher than the tip.The last roller should be placed
in the middle of these two, where the pole sags slightly. This willtake
the strain of the middle length. Again, this should be higher thanthe
front roller but lower than the backroller.

BAIT PREPARATION
Pour in one bag of the
sonubaits.com Fin
Perfect Micro Pellets
into a large bucket.
Add about a third of a
pint of water.
Mix the water and
pellets vigorously to
evenly spread the water
among the pellets and
prevent them from going
mushy.
Wait about 20 minutesfor the pellets to absorb
the water. Repeat the
process twice but with
a little less water each
time.
The pellets should be left
for a while then put into
a sealable plastic bag
and placed in a fridge
overnight. They will be
perfect in the morning. Can your pole do this?
Many anglers use a small eeder or
straight lead but accuracy at such short
distances is very hard to achieve, and
many a eeder has been lost in the ar-bank
vegetation. By fshing the pole you can be
accurate with your eeding and rig placement
and you can strike at any indication, which isneeded on some colder days. The hardest part
is getting to grips with the extra length!
Naturally I use Preston Innovations
products or all my fshing, including a 2G91
pole. All o the Genis poles have parallel 16m
extensions available, so you can extend your
pole to whatever length you need or want.
Most poles having these parallel extensions
can be used, as long as they are quite strong
and have little ex through the middle. This
will help keep the pole o the water and
prevent you having to lean back too much to
support it.
The hardest part o fshing with a pole
this long is getting it out to 19 metres with apole-mounted pot o bait. To do this properly
you need at least two rollers; I have three and
use the very large Preston Pro-V Rollers. The
large target area between the two upright
rollers makes it easier to locate the rollers
when trying to ship a fsh back and gives you
more room or error. The more rollers you

use the more support your pole gets. Its
crucial to position your rollers in the right
place to help you ship out smoother and
quicker.
When you are ready to start shipping
out, make sure its done smoothly. Speed
is not o the essence here getting to
the ar bank with bait in the pot and
an untangled rig is. I tend to ship out
as usual to about 16 or 17 metres then
shue the pole out using my orearm
and thigh as stabilisers. Once I get to 19
metres I will rotate the pole and tap it to
release the bait, then lay my rig in over
the top. Its then time to sit and wait or a
bite. By using your thighs and arms more
than usual this method isnt too bad and
long stationary periods can be achieved
without any aches and pains.
I have seen a lot o people try to ship
out maggots and loose pellets then look
in despair as they reach 17 metres and
the pot spills bait into their peg. The lids
on the Carp Cad Pots do help to prevent
this, but I have a better way o ensuring
your bait ends up in the right place every
time. I use sonubaits.com Fin Perect
Micro Pellets that have been wetted and
prepared the night beore. By doing
this the pellets are slightly heavier and
pull through the surace tension easier,
preventing them rom blowing away in
windy conditions. These can then be
compressed into a small Cad Pot with a
ew grains o sweetcorn
and the consistency
o the pellets holds
everything in. You
can even ship out
upside down and
they stay in! The
only baits I used
when I weighed
in 180lb were
a tin o
corn and
a bag o
sotened pellets.
Rig wise, I have ound simplicity is
by ar the best option. The more you
complicate the rig by adding loads o
shot the more chance you have o it
tangling. I used a 4x10 Preston Chianti
tied to 0.13mm
PowerLine.
The hook was
a size 16 PR32
on a 0.11mm
PowerLine
hooklength
set a couple o
inches overdepth. My shotting was very
simple, with three No10s as a bulk 12
inches rom the hook and one No10 six
inches below as the only dropper.
Throughout this winter campaign I have
been helping develop the new Preston
Pulla Kit, which allows you to pull the
elastic through a strengthened area
o the top kit, thus enabling you to
alter the amount o elastic in
use. This is especially useul
when using sot elastics
and trying to land
big fsh.
I have seen people ship out apot of bait, then as they reach17 metres the bait spills into
their peg not good.
SHIPPING OUT11Ship your pole out as usual using your
arms for strength.22 Once you have gotas far as possible,
use your thighs
more as a rest and
push it out across
your legs.
You will need
to use yourforearms to
shuffle the
pole along
your legs.
Tuck the
pole
under your
forearm
and across
your thigh to
support the
majority of the weight. Tap the pole with
your front hand to release the bait from the
pole pot.
