Mean annual wheat yield increases must change from currently 1.1% (2001-2010) to 1.6% (2011-2050) to meet demand trends and for prices to remain stable
Need for increased coordination
Main objectives of Wheat Initiative
Encourage and support the development of a vibrant global wheat public-private research community sharing resources, capabilities, data and ideas to improve wheat productivity, quality and sustainable production around the world
Develop a global strategic agenda for wheat research that can best be achieved by international coordination and collaboration between researchers, research institutions and funding organisations
Encourage efficient investment in wheat research based on the capabilities of, and synergies among, national and international programs
Initiate the development of new collaborative programmes and coordinated actions across developing and developed countries
Develop and coordinate knowledge sharing amongst the international wheat community
Improve access of all to resources, services and facilities
Governance framework
Wheat Initiative first activities
Attracting members to populate the different committees
Setting up website (www.wheatinitiative.org) and implementing it
Writing Vision Document
Survey and concept note on Wheat Information System
Setting up Expert Working Groups (Wheat Information System, Durum wheat genomics and breeding, Breeding methods, IWGSC)
Challenges for the future
The success of the Wheat Initiative will be dependent upon engagement of the global wheat community : Attract members of non G20 – countries Provide information about wheat research in all countries on website
organised in a searchable database Connect scientists from North & South & International organizations on
common topics of interest
Encourage collaboration among national research and development donors to fund transnational research programmes and create global synergies
