An Example of BIM Application in Detail Design &
Information management
What is BIM?
Building Information Modeling (BIM)
Is a process involving the generation and management of
digital representations of physical and functional
characteristics of places . A BIM is a shared knowledge
resource for information about a facility forming a reliable
basis for decisions during its life-cycle; defined as existing
from earliest conception to demolition. (NBIMS-US, 2016)
(BIMs) are files which can be extracted, exchanged or
networked (Interoperability) to support decision-making
regarding a building or other built asset.
BIM Maturity Level
Summary of What We Have Done
DATA Gathering* Gathering all existing Drawings , Models , Docs, …
3D Modeling (Selecting Appropriate Software & LOD)* AVEVA E3D as Common Platform (Platform for Combining all Models)
* AVEVA E3D as Pipe, Duct, Cable Way Modeler
* Tekla as Structure Modeler
* Autodesk Revit as Architecture and Civil Item modeler
* Autodesk CIVIL3D as Road and Land Scape Modeler
* Autodesk Inventor & 3D MAX as Equipment modeler
AVEVA NET Models
* Setting up Server for Project
* Importing 3D model into AVEVA Net Server
* Attaching all DWGs & Docs to their relevant objects in model
3D Modeling LOD
LOD : Level of Development or Detail
LOD 100: SCHEMATIC DESIGN (SD)
LOD 200: DESIGN DEVELOPMENT (DD)
LOD 300: CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENT (CD)
LOD 400: CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION (CA)
LOD 500: AS BUILT MODEL
P1 3D Modeling LOD
LOD 100:
Foundations, Roads & Pavement, ELE & Control Room
Architecture, Cranes, Transfer Car, ELE & Mech. Equipment
LOD 200:
Structure ,Piping ,Cable Ways,
Imported Models Tekla Structure (for steel structure)
Imported Models Revit (for Foundations , Building Architecture)
Imported Models Revit (for Foundations , Building Architecture)
Imported Models CIVIL3D (for Roads & Rail Track)
Imported Models 3DMax (for Making equipement)
Modeling in AVEVA E3D Piping ,Pipe Supports, Cable Ways ,Conduit Banks, Hand Rails & Simple
Equipment such as J.B., Finally Put All Equipment in their Locations
Integrating All Models in AVEVA E3D AVEVA E3D
Benefits of Integrated Model :Clash Management
& More Clear Details for Contractor
Pipe Routing & Fittings locations is coordinated with other disciplines
(Examples as below)
BEFORE AFTER
Benefits of Integrated Model :Clash Management
& More Detail for Execution (cont.) Example of a 2D Drawing of Oxygen Pipe Route before Using BIM
Benefits of Integrated Model :Clash Management (cont.)
Electrical & Mechanical equipment location coordinated with other disciplines objects Cause Reduce Waste During Construction
Benefits of Integrated Model: Fast & Accurate QTY
Survey Reporting Quantities of Bulk materials (Steel structure weight, Conc Vol, Trays,
Pipes , … ) by few clicks Cuase More Accurate Procurement
Benefits of Integrated Model: Future Development, Training,…
Facilitate Future Development & Change Management by Inserting
Changes in Model, it is possible to Make Better Decisions
Integrating Model Can’t be used directly for :
Calculating Strength or Capacity of Steel Structure
Members Due to Change in Loads
Calculating Piping Diameter Due to Change in
Consumptions
Calculating ….
In general 3D model can be used for exporting existing
situation to analytical software and make change as per
requests. The approved final new situation can be imported
again in 3D model
AVEVA NET dashboard
In-built visualization of all project data including 3D modelling and
associated document links in HTML format environment
Future Services
Upgrade design model to as-built model based on handed over changes by contractor
Modify assigned information according to last changes
Assisting Client to Prepare BIM Based Contracts to Enforce New Contractors Adopt this Technology
Initiate Information management system for operation phase
Support system during operation & maintenance and preserve model & information update always
Conclusion
Use of BIM in Engineering Cause Higher Quality , Lower Costs & Better
Control on Project
Use of Net Technology in Asset Information Management Cause Less time for
Finding Information By Owner & Operators and Better Decision Making.
