• The teaching of a skill that enables children to read and write independently from an early age

Jolly Phonics
• Sounds are taught and consolidated daily through oral and practical activities – go over sounds each night
• Handwriting is taught alongside this but at a slower pace due to the need for plenty of practise
• Sounds are taught in all positions of the word i.e. beginning, middle and end
• Parts of Jolly Phonics –
1. Learning the letter sounds – 26 initial letter sounds plus ch/sh/th/qu

2. Learning the letter formation –
• We use various mediums e.g. pencils, in the sand, paint, shaving foam
• Ensure correct formation• Handwriting guide sheet• Keep an eye on pencil grip• Modelled, shared, guided,
independent writing
3. Blending
This is when the children put the sounds together to read words

4. Segmenting • This is when a child can split a word
into individual sounds e.g. if you say cat – they will be able to identify the 3 sounds:
• c – a – t• Depends on the child
5. Tricky Words• There are some words that cannot be
sounded out – we call these tricky words – for example want/here/are
• These are sight words and have to be learnt
• Your child will come across some of these in their reading books
Reading • Early reading skills require a good
grasp of telling stories through pictures
• Your child will receive a variety of picture books each with different learning themes
• Reading books need to brought to school every day
Story Worlds• It is a simple guided reading book• Adult/teacher/parent reads the
story• Child is encouraged to read what’s in
the speech bubble• Enables the child to enjoy a complete
story while reading their first sightwords
• Begin with 1 book then onto 2 • Key-rings– make it fun – every night• Strong finger• Initially all the same book – word
assessment – grouped according to ability
• Strategies – look at the picture for clues, initial sound, sound it out
