MAKITA celebrates its centenary in 2015 and to mark this industrialmilestone an additional swathe of high performanceaccessories has been added to this already compre-hensive range. Based on the thesis that there is nopoint in investing in a high quality tool and thenbuying the cheapest available drill bit or blade, theMakita accessory products are paired with theappropriate machines to deliver the maxi-mum performance in operation.

Amongst the new range of products are thincut-off wheels that are ideally suited to use withcordless tools but can equally be used with mainsgrinders to cut steel and stainless steel. These 0.8mm fast-cutting wheels are available in 115 mm and125 mm diameter and deliver a fine cut that leavesfewer burrs on the material edges and less swarf residuefrom the cutting action.

New tungsten carbide grit tipped hole-saws are available in seven sizes from 33 mm to 83 mm and are idealfor boring through soft brick, soft tile and GRP. Multi-purpose TCT tipped hole-saws were recently introducedas a nine or ten piece set and have proved a high performance accessory. These are now available as individualitems in the Makita accessory range in 21 sizes ranging from 22 mm up to 105 mm. The body of these hole-sawsis carbon steel and the TCT tips are tungsten carbide making these useful hole-saws ideal for work with wood,MDF, plasterboard, PVC, glass fibre, soft tile, brick and limestone.

The range of Makita machines utilising two 18 V lithium-ion batteries to generate a mightly 36 V of power isexpanding quickly. Therefore the new twin-port fast charger that takes just 22 minutes to fully charge two18 V 3.0 Ah batteries will prove invaluable. This new twin-port charger will charge two 4.0 Ah batteries in 36 min-utes. With an LED charging display, and full charge audible alert, the Makita DC18RD fast charger has a usefulUSB port to charge your smart phone, a forced cooling system for battery protection and a built-in electroniccurrent limiter for overload protection.

If you are taking a mitre saw on site for second fix operations, the new Makita DEAWST06 portable, extend-ing mitre saw stand will be very useful. Compatible with the majority of popular Makita mitre saws, the standallows the mitre saw to slide for convenient positioning. There are adjustable extending arms on both sides ofthe stand and one arm has a built-in roller support making material placement easy and accurate. Fully ex-tended the stand supports are 2.55 m wide. LEADING timber merchant WestMidlands Merchant Trading hasrecently installed the latest dustextraction technology at its fouracre site in Walsall, West Mid-lands. The company, which is adivision of GE Robinson andpart of the Haldane FisherGroup of Northern Ireland, stocks both timber and sheetmaterials.

From its Walsall base, andstrategically located quays aroundthe country, the company can ef-fect prompt deliveries to cus-tomers using its own transportfleet. Stocks range from palletwood and rough sawn timber, through to decking and specialistmachined products — all of whichcan be supplied with a variety ofdifferent timber treatments andpreservatives.

Following its acquisition by GERobinson in 2014, the companyhas seen upwards of £500,000 ofinvestment in new plant andequipment, including the recentinstallation of a state-of-the-artdust extraction plant completewith Ecogate energy saving tech-nology. Supplied by dust extrac-tion specialists, Dust ControlSystems Ltd (DCS), the new planthas been designed to extract

wood dust and chips from high-performance planer moulders andother woodworking machines inthe firm’s machining shops.

Paul Kavanagh, operations di-

rector at GE Robinson, says: “It wasdecided that the existing dustplant was no longer fit for purposeand we called in DCS to discussour needs — DCS installed and

maintain our dust plants at ourSalford and Garstang sites, and wehave been pleased with all aspectsof the service they provide. Aftercarrying out a full appraisal of our

requirements, DCS recommendeda modern extraction plant con-trolled by their Ecogate system. This system would satisfy our ex-traction needs and cut electricitybills by providing the optimumamount of power to meetdemand.”

An externally-sited modular fil-ter unit, capable of handling largeair flows with heavy material con-tent, was installed. The filter incor-porates screw and rotary valvedischarge to a wood waste trans-fer system which feeds waste to ei-ther one of two 13 tonne capacitycontainer trailers.

Designed to handle a total air-flow capacity of 65,000 m3/hr, thesystem employs two 55 kW, low-noise, main fan-sets and a 15 kWwaste transfer fan. System controlis provided by two Ecogate PowerMASTER® variable speed driveunits, complete with integral Eco-gate greenBOX® 12+ controllers.

Each woodworking machine isfitted with a motorised Ecogatedamper gate which automaticallyopens and closes as machinescome on or off line. Responding

‘on-demand’ to variations in ma-chine usage, the Power MASTER®units continually adjust the speedof the fans, and optimise energyconsumption.

“DCS completed a highly profes-sional installation over a time con-tingent four day period andeveryone at our Walsall branch ispleased with the performance of the

M & R JOINERY Services Ltd is a premier manufac-turer and installer of traditional timber windowsand doors in the North West of England. Operat-ing out of a manufacturing facility in Knowsley,Liverpool, with its excellent transport links, thecompany offers a nationwide service, from initialquote to surveying, manufacturing, installationand aftersales.

Recently, the company has invested in a KündigPremium-2 1350 RP sander customised for work withjoinery, from Carl O’Meara of Kündig Ltd.

“We needed a wide belt sander to save time and toreduce the dust in the workshop,” M & R’s Phillip Lev-ensen told Panel, Wood & Solid Surface. “Before webought the Kündig we were using hand held sanders,so the best size on that is 100 mm wide while the belton the Kündig is 1.3 m wide: that is, 13 times thewidth of the hand held sander!

“So the precision is much better and there is muchless dust: with a hand held device even with a dustbag fitted the environment can become quite dusty. The Kündig sander has its own dust extraction sys-tem, which cost a few thousand pounds, but is sepa-rate to the dust extraction system for the othermachines. It is better for the workshop in terms ofdust: and we can put more items through it and more quickly than usinga little portable hand-held tool.

“A wide-belt sander is much more expensive than a hand-held tool, but we did some trials at Carl’s place and were very pleased with the re-sults. We had only used the sander a couple of times when we agreed tobuy it!

“During the three month turn around, waiting for the sander to arriveafter it had been ordered, we felt we could not go back to using the handheld sander, because a wide-belt sander saves so much time, so Carl letus use his sander when necessary. I felt a bit cheeky because we were ar-riving with so much product, but Carl was fine with this, saying use it asmuch as you like while waiting for the machine to arrive. We visitedKündig Ltd five or six times within that period.

“There was one particular evening, we got there 2 pm or 3 pm, I didn’trealise how much stuff we had in the van and we left at 8 pm: we reckonthat the work would have taken one man about 40 hours using the handheld sander, but we did it in about four to five hours on the machine. Itwas pretty unbelievable, really!”

Phillip added, “Carl O’Meara was quite instrumental in our choice ofsander. If you like the person and get on with the person, you are halfwaythere to doing business. Carl was really, really helpful and he went theextra mile. We get on so well with Carl that we have spoken to him sinceconcerning other machinery for our workshop.”

He continued, “We had never had a widebelt sanding machine in ourworkshop before. Whey my brother and I entered the business at differ-ent stages, my Dad had everything the business needed to do the job. There is always bigger and better machinery out there, but we had whatwe needed.

“Over the last few years my brother and I have taken the business overand have replaced a couple of machines that were old and needed re-placing. As we are successful and get a lot of business we have contin-ued to invest, and with the sander we are now at the next level: it hasspeeded up the process. Most people have a wide-belt sander, and sothis was the first thing we invested in for something we have never had.

“We never had any benchmark: we didn’t know what they cost orwhich brand was better. We received a recommendation from the guywho does our maintenance: he spoke highly of Carl and said the Kündigsander was ‘the Rolls Royce of wide-belt sanding’. It was the first one wereally looked at.

“We did make other enquiries, but one advantage of the Kündigsander is that when you get different thicknesses with other machinesyou have to open up and close the machine to the different thicknesses, while on a Kündig the heads move up and down rather than the table, which is an advantage as the working height remains the same. The tech-nology behind it is very precise: it is an excellent machine.”

The Kündig Premium sander is available in widths from 650 mm to1,600 mm, with larger widths available on request: Phillip chose the 1350mm because 75-80% of the windows can go through the machine ascomplete products, and those that are too wide can go through in com-ponent form before assembly, “which speeds things up as well”.

When asked if he would recommend the Kündig Premium sander,Philliip replied: “Yes, highly. I would recommend it to anyone who has gota joiner’s shop.”Kündig LtdTel 0845 833 0565 l [email protected] l www.kundig.co.uk

TIMBAWOOD moved from in-stallation to joinery productioneight years ago, after gettingfed up with poor quality andlead times from other suppliers.Since then it has built up a repu-tation for being experts in tradi-tional windows and doors forperiod properties throughoutLondon. Its handcrafted joineryand excellent customer servicehas ensured that business isgrowing based purely on wordof mouth recommendation.

Timbawood director, Ian Selby, says: “We try to deliver on time andcustomers like our quality,” adding,“We invite everyone to come toour factory to show them ourquality control, productionmethods and to meet our team. All this provides evidence that weare a proper manufacturer.”

Four years ago Ian recognisedthe company needed software tohelp with the time consumingprocess of quoting. He says, “Therecomes a point in your businesswhere if you don’t have the rightsoftware you will fail; I was wast-ing so much time quoting that thecost of not having it outweighedthe cost of purchasing JMS.”

Joinerysoft’s Joinery Manage-ment Software (JMS) was recom-mended by Timbawood’sproduction director, Daniel Mehl -berg, who had used the softwareat a previous company. Ian andDaniel looked at two differentsoftware solutions and chose Join-erysoft because it felt right. Ian

says, “Joinerysoft was moving for-ward, developing new featuresand going somewhere. It seemeda good fit for our business.”

The resulting time and financialsavings as a result of reduced er-rors have enabled Timbawood toexpand further, taking the com-pany to £3,000,000 turnover andforty staff, including fitters, officestaff, design staff and a separateglass company.

Ian believes that JMS has madea big difference to customer serv-ice, but also has improved howstaff feel about their job. “The turn-around of quotes in just three tofour days, rather than the two tothree weeks it took previously, hasgiven staff a new outlook on the

way they work, and gives staff theconfidence that they are betterpositioned within the market.”

JMS has been able to save timein all aspects of Timbawood’s busi-ness including, quoting, job revi-sions, calculations, sendingcutting sheets to the factory, andgenerating orders for glass andtimber. As a result Ian says, “Joinerscan now spend more time withclients and provide better cus-tomer service by keeping a closereye on production checking theright fittings and colours are used.”

The factory joiners have wel-comed the production printoutsfrom JMS, which according to Ianhas brought more order to theworkshop. Because of this Timba-wood has been able to change theway that they order materials. Iansays, “We can now order our mate-rials in batches as JMS allows us tobetter estimate the amount thatwe will need for each job.” He con-tinues, “Ordering in this waymeans that we deal with less paperwork as we are orderingmore, but less frequently.”

Timbawood’s latest investmenthas been the purchase of aSoukup ‘Crafter’ earlier this year. This windowline has enabled thecompany to introduce a newrange of ‘traditional styled’ ma-chined windows, which are moreprice competitive than their handcrafted counterpart, while stillmaintaining the high quality con-trol that Timbawood is known for.Ian says, “From the very beginningwe knew we needed our Join-erysoft software to run this ma-

chine.” He adds, “Fast moving join-ery needs to be accurately pricedto be profitable. JMS calculatesproduction sheets and quicklyfeeds the machine directly, re-moving mistakes and assisting re-cruitment of staff by removing theneed to employ joiners with tradi-tional hand crafting skills whichcan be difficult to source andcostly.”

The extra manufacturing capac-ity this has brought has enabledthe company to add two ap-proved resellers to the group.Based in Brighton and South EastLondon, these resellers will keepthe Soukup Crafter busy in a spe-cially introduced eight hour nightshift, to cope with demand. Tim-bawood’s technical team and cus-tomer support will be fullysupporting these new ventures.

Ian concludes, “JMS has grownwith us as we have moved from asingle user to a three user networkand now purchased a Soukup ma-chining link. I believe JMS is thebest software on the market andworks well because it is designedfor joiners. I certainly would notchange.” He adds, “JMS has helpedus transform from a small businessinto a larger, more organised andprofitable business.”TimbawoodTel 020 8893 [email protected] LtdTel 01608 [email protected]

CONFIDENCE. Flexibility. Visibil-ity. Those are the three key-words that Cabinet Visionsoftware provides for one ofNorthern Ireland’s leadingkitchen, bedroom and cabinetcompanies.

Woodland Kitchens, a family-run business founded in Bally-mena over 30 years ago by BrianMcCloskey, who is still managingdirector, is at the forefront of de-sign, manufacture and installationof high-end, ultra-contemporaryand traditional kitchens and bed-rooms. All the units are created ina purpose-built 90,000 ft2 factoryin Rasharkin, using computer con-trolled manufacturing technologycombined with traditional crafts-manship, and are supplied fullymade up.

Design technician, Sean Quinn, says Cabinet Vision is an essential part of its design process.“It gives us a clear vision of what we are aiming to produce, and the confidence that what wedesign will be replicated in the workshop. We will take an initial brief on the specifications, and Cabinet Vision’s wizard makes it so easy for us to construct a base unit. That’s always ourstarting point.” Then comes the flexibility of bringing in materials of different thicknessesand finishes, regardless of the unit design. “We simply toggle between the materials, andhave total confidence that the unit will fit within the parameters that we set.”

As well as a fast design time — he says it takes around half an hour to design a full kitchenin Cabinet Vision — it also gives what they call “essential visibility” on how all the cabinetsinterlink. It is this additional detail of the through-section displays that they find to be atremendous advantage. “Most design packages are primarily for floor plan layouts. They showhow the finished cabinets and doors will look, but don’t go into construction detail. Some-one may use software like that to design something which looks good, but it doesn’t workwhen it comes to putting everything together. Cabinet Vision overcomes those issues bygiving me all the details I need to be fully confident that my designs can be machined andconstructed perfectly. With Cabinet Vision I can design a unit that isn’t just a block of a cer-tain height by a certain width and certain depth … I know the position of the shelves, wherethe feet will go and how the fixing components are going to interlock the units together, down to the finest detail.”

And he says because Cabinet Vision shows movement systems such as hinges, drawers, ex-tensions and angles, those can be tested at the CAD design stage, giving confidence thatthe fitters will not have any issues at the customer’s home.

Overall, he feels designing with Cabinet Vision is three times faster than using other soft-ware packages. “And even then, they don’t give the specifics of construction elements. Soit’s not just time saving with Cabinet Vision; we get flexibility and full visibility, which givesthat all important confidence of knowing that what we see at the CAD stage will be faithfullyreplicated when we start cutting wood.” And with Cabinet Vision being fully parametric they

can take an existing design and tweak it to create something new. SeanQuinn keeps all his programs as a starting point, or base program, forother projects. “We can set up rules for how we want a cabinet to respond, and with a couple of mouse clicks we can transform what we have donepreviously into a new program.”

He says whenever they design a cabinet and position a shelf or hingehole, with tooling attached to that operation, Cabinet Vision gives themthe ability to view the part as an individual, rather than just the unit as awhole. Even though their Solid Ultimate edition of Cabinet Vision helpsthem take the business to a different level, they are constantly pushing itsboundaries and asking the support team how it can be stretched toachieve even more time savings. “For example, we attached an attributeto our system to include a specific handle drilling program where we justwanted to click a button to apply it to any panel without having to do itmanually every time. It’s just a little tool that makes life easier.”

“IT WAS like a curtain being infront of us until 2008. Then weinstalled Alphacam and the cur-tains opened.” These are thewords of Gerwyn Lloyd, ownerof family-run innovative joineryand CNC machining companyTimberworks Wales.

“Alphacam has become com-pletely indispensable. I can’t imaginea day in the workshop without it.”

In particular, it has revolu-tionised the company’s staircaseproduction process, in conjunc-tion with Staircon. Gerwyn’s wife,Susan, designs the staircases withthe Staircon Professional suite, and the file is transferred viaAlphaEdit to the uniquely cus-tomised Anderson PTP-3013router. “Alphacam nests the stairtreads and places the strings andnewel posts on the bed,” he says.“It would be almost impossible forus to lay everything out on thebed in conjunction with the laser, without it.”

The laser he refers to is the SLProDirector 6, installed above therouter after consultation with Mar-tin Measures from Alphacam andDerek Coulson from Staircon. Thelaser uses AlphaEdit to find thetoolpaths for the parts, then proj-ects them on to the workpiecebelow. “As it is calibrated specifi-cally for the CNC machine we canput any number of parts on thebed. It increased our productionby up to 40 per cent almostovernight.”

He says using the laser projec-tor frees them from pinstops andallows small parts to be nestedanywhere on the table, optimising

toolpaths and running more partsin each nest. “As it accuratelyshows the toolpath on the bed, wecan place smaller blanks withmuch more precision, saving ma-terial costs and reducing off-cutwaste disposal costs. Projectingpod locations also greatly reducesthe chances of expensive tool andpod collisions.”

The CNC machine itself is an-other example of Timberworks’ in-novation, as it can be used both asa matrix bed and for beam andpod technology. Only havingaround 1,000 square metres acrosstwo floors in the workshopnestling in the hills above Port Tal-bot, Gerwyn Lloyd says the com-pany does not have room for twomachines. But as the companyproduces anything from staircasesto kitchen units, bedrooms andboard products — along with of-fering a subcontract CNC machin-ing service to other joinerycompanies — the company needsthe capability of both cuttingtechniques.

“We adapted the Anderson our-selves, and Alphacam is perfect for

cutting staircase components, curved windows, and parts suchas chair arms, or anything else re-quiring a lot of tooling.”

The timber used for staircasesincludes oak, walnut, ash, ma-hogany and MDF. Once Susancomplete the full-scale productiondrawings using Staircon’s CADfunction, the dxf files are exportedinto Alphacam with pre-deter-mined layer names, for machining.“They go straight into a folderspecifically for stairs, and I thenuse a bar code reader to find theindividual parts.” CNC programsare generated for individualstrings, treads and newels, alongwith reports for the shop floor.

“The laser uses the same files toproject the position on the bed, sowe never have any issues withparts being out of place.

“Alphacam also gives us a 100per cent total ability to changeanything I need to at the machine, including tooling,” says Gerwyn. “Ifwe are working with a particularlyhard timber I may need to slowthe tool speed right down, and Ican do it instantly with Alphacam.”

It also means they can carry out

swift and accurate prototyping, es-pecially for staircases featuringcomplex turns.

The combination of Alphacamand Staircon provided Timber-works Wales with a low cost solu-tion when their previous staircasesoftware was no longer sup-ported. The strategy was to installStaircon as a specialist front-enddesign and CAD package for stair-cases. The powerful and versatileAlphacam is a generic CAM sys-tem, which is also utilised for con-tracts other than staircases. “Forexample, we recently had an orderfor 63 coffee tables, and we usedAlphacam’s nesting facility to putall the parts out for us.”

They stock over 100 cuttingtools, frequently used in batchesof ten. “We use specific tungstentools for machining solid timberstaircases and windows in a beamand pod operation, with PCD toolsfor our sheet work on the matrixbed.”

Around 70 per cent of the workis for South and West Wales, alongwith London, the South Coast, andnow moving into the Midlands. But they are also starting to deliverfurther afield, as more customerslearn about their guaranteed max-imum turnaround time of 14 daysfor every contract, irrespective ofthe number of components in-volved. COMBILIFT had one less exhibit to ship back to Ireland after thisyear’s Ligna show in Hannover when the Combi-CBE on display onthe stand was snapped up by fellow exhibitor Mebor, a Slo-venian manufacturer of primary wood processing machines.

The compact counterbalance design, electric powered Combi-CBE isbelieved to be the first model of its kind to be in operation in Sloveniaand will be used for transporting steel profiles, semi-finished and finishedsawmilling machinery as well as various sizes of pallets.

The Mebor brand was established in 1982 by Boris Mesecand the company prides itself on being one of the world’sleading manufacturers of machinery for the primary sawingof wood and is believed to have been the first to make a fullyautomatic horizontal band saw. Now catering for small, medium and larger scale sawmills, 95% of the company’sproducts are exported.

Boris Mesec and his son Uroš visited the Combilift standwhen they were exhibiting at this year’s Ligna show. Pro-duction manager Uroš Mesec said: “We need a more com-pact machine for our new production warehouse and wewould like a battery operated machine that is quieter for useindoors but still capable of handling three tonne loadswhich can be up to 9 m long.”

Previously the main handling vehicles used by Meborwere two-directional forklifts which transported wood-working materials around the warehouse. The limited ma-noeuvrability of these trucks was less than ideal whendealing with long and heavy loads and meant that trans-portation was a very time consuming process.

Wanting a more suitable solution for requirements thecompany invested in its first Combilift — a C4000 truck —and in 2011 it acquired a second machine, a 10 tonne ca-

pacity C10,000, both of which are operational at Meribor’s 15,000 m2

warehouse. The multi-directional capability of the Combilifts when han-dling long and heavy loads has resulted in increased space saving, im-prove safety and increased operational flexibility at the warehouse, andthe Mesec family are delighted with the results.Combilift Ltd l Tel 00353 47 80500Email [email protected] l www.combilift.com

A LEICESTERSHIRE joinery company haspurchased a wood waste heater fromWood Waste Technology to save moneyon its operating costs.

JCK Joinery and Spirit Doors, part of Brit-doors Group, manufactures bespoke joineryand timber doors. The company decided topurchase a wood waste heater to utilise thewaste timber and board product it gener-ates daily, reducing expenditure on heatingand waste disposal.

Commercial manager, Anthony Kellett, re-searched the marketplace to find the bestwood waste heater for the company’s needs.Having read favourable reviews about UKmanufacturer Wood Waste Technology, thecompany requested a site survey and fol-lowed up customer references provided bythe managing director of Wood Waste Tech-nology, Kurt Cockroft.

Anthony says: “The range of heaters of-fered by Wood Waste Technology met ourrequirements, and their existing customer’scomments were positive for the product andcustomer service. We had concerns over thelocation of the heater and the flue positionbut we received advice from Kurt and theseissues were resolved quickly.”

Around Easter this year, a WT10 was installed at JCK Joinery’s 5,000 ft2

unit in Leicester by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers. Thecompany also recycles its wood extract waste into briquettes which caneither be used in the heater or sold, depending on the time of year. Boththe briquetter and heater are part of the company’s strategy to reduce

operating costs and its carbon footprint.Anthony continues: “The real benefits will

come as the weather gets colder; howeverwe have been pleasantly surprised at theperformance of the heater and the ease ofoperation. We have a wide variety of timberand board waste and it can all be used tofuel the heater. The WT10 keeps the work-shop warm, even the cold spots adjacent tothe roller shutter doors. As we use more ofour waste for fuel it takes longer to fill thewaste skip which obviously brings addi-tional savings. It will be a full 12 months be-fore we know what savings have beenachieved but it’s looking good so far, as thecost of heating the workshop with gas warmair units was high.”

Managing director of Wood Waste Tech-nology, Kurt Cockroft, says: “It’s great thatthe team can decide whether to burn or bri-quette the waste wood — as it means theyeither make money or save money fromtheir wood waste, instead of paying to haveit taken away.” Wood Waste Technology’syears of expertise in wood waste solutionshave helped many companies reduce theirwaste disposal and heating costs. As well asoffering site survey, design, manufacture, in-

stallation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company alsoservices all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares.JCK Joinery/Spirit Doors l www.britdoorsgroup.comWood Waste Technology l Tel 01785 250400www.woodwastetechnology.com l www.grossuk.co.uk

NORBORD’S SterlingOSB hasbeen chosen for the construc-tion of wall panels at the newvisitor centre for the Kelpies, artist Andy Scott’s enormoussteel horse-head sculpturesnear Falkirk, Scotland.

Construction of the £1.45 m vis-itor centre started earlier in 2015and is due for completion in theautumn. It will include a restau-rant, retail area, visitor informationand facilities and an audio-visual‘experience’.

Designed by Dundee architect,

Nicol Russell Studios, the low-pro-file building is intended to blendseamlessly into the landscape, using grass mounds and profiledroof panels to ensure an uninter-rupted view of the 30 m tall, 300tonne, Kelpie sculptures. Thebuilding comprises a steel frame-work with timber in-fill panels andis covered with a natural larch rain-screen cladding. Timber frameconstruction usually involves themanufacture of panels by special-ists off-site.

But that is not the case on this

project, says Alan Barton, projectmanager with main contractor,Maxi Construction. “We are mak-ing the panels up ourselves, ratherthan have them manufactured bya timber-frame company,” he says.Unlike modern timber frame, thisdesign uses steel for the mainstructural elements and is there-fore not ‘timber frame construc-tion’ in the true sense.

The panels, which are made toclose tolerances, comprise basicsoftwood frames incorporatingthermal insulation and vapourmembranes with SterlingOSB‘skins’ on both sides to providestrength and stiffness.

On this project, SterlingOSBwas specified by the project engi-neer, and Alan says that it is widelyused on most of the projects heworks on. “It is in nearly all timberframe systems and is widely usedfor roof sarking, especially here inScotland,” he says.

Alan estimates that this projectwill require approximately 1,000m2 of SterlingOSB for the 100 m-long building. “We are using a lotof OSB on this project — I amlooking at a huge stack of it rightnow in the yard,” he adds.NorbordTel 01786 812921www.norbord.co.uk

POISEDALE Dorset Joinery Ltd hasbeen operating from its current Hin-ton St Mary, Dorset, site since 1989,under the management of AndyTatum and his team of local joinersand cabinet makers. Over the nexttwo decades, the reputation for qual-ity British craftsmanship, technicaljoinery solutions and professionalservices became synonymous withthe name Poisedale. In 2009 thecompany re-branded to PoisedaleLtd, with the intention of increasingits potential market to other sectors.

Recently, the company invested inan OMC press from A12 Machinery.

As a company, Poisedale now hasmany years’ experience working in part-nership with leading designers, archi-tects and prestige property constructioncompanies in the private residence, cor-porate and hospitality sectors, and sodemand the very best from the machin-ery that is purchased. Andy and his “inhouse” team of 21 Poisedale skilled join-ers, machinists, finishers, upholsterers, project managers, CAD and Solidworks 3D designers and office personnelhave continued the tradition for quality, professionalism and dedication, de-livering high-end joinery products on time and budget, and the press was pur-chased to continue to uphold that tradition.

The company enjoys a high level of repeat business from its clients andbelieves the success of its company lies in the care it takes to maintain close, reliable and long-lasting professional relationships backed by its commit-ment to excellence in practice, and Poisedale has such a long standing rela-tionship with Albert Holland of A12 Machinery.

This helps Poisedale deliver high quality sustainable bespoke interior join-ery with sound project management and technical expertise, by ensuringthat the machinery used during the production process is right.

“We needed the ability to do our own pressing,” Andy Tatum told Panel,Wood & Solid Surface. “We are continually pushing to achieve ever higher

quality, and atthe same timewe were tak-ing on bigger contracts which require specialist veneering. Having the press has given usthe ability to take on more work.”

The heavy duty press, with a structure created from fe430 welded beams, is manufac-tured in Europe. The frame is welded and worked with high precision machines to guar-antee a long lifetime. The press can be equipped with different types of platens accordingto production needs, and with different types of heating in order to guarantee the bestworking results. With a pressing area of 3,100 mm x 1,550 mm and ten cylinders each of85 mm, the hydraulic system is composed of a double stage oil submerged pump for quietoperation, and the integrated weekly or daily automatic starting allows pre heating, sothe press is ready for use when required. OMC presses are controlled via a colour touch-screen, which governs the heating and the pressing time, calculates the pressure settingwhen part loading and has an integrated timer for pressing times as well as weekly/dailyautomatic starting to allow pre heating ready for use.

The high quality of the projects Poisedale works on is clearly evident in its brochuresand in the video showing its projects on its website, and when asked what the press wasused for, Andy Tatum replied that the work was very varied: “We press everything frombespoke marquetry panels right the way through to laminate panels. The press copesvery well with sensitive surfaces.”

Describing the company’s relationship with Albert Holland and A12, Andy said: “Wehave dealt with A12 in the past, and found them to be very reliable with an excellentback up ser vice. The OMC press was recommended by A12 and, based on our previousdealings with Albert, we knew we did not need to look anywhere else.”

When asked if he would recommend the OMC press, Andy replied, “Yes, wholeheartedly.”OMC presses are available in the UK from A12 Machinery in the South and from J & C

NO, this is not the lat-est archaeologicalfind, it is about theLondon based familyfirm, Roman Timber.Following the reces-sion, it is now one ofthe few timber mer-chants left in EastLondon supplyingthe local market. Thecompany stocks awide variety of sheetand solid timber sec-tions, supplying boththe trade and retailmarkets.

With the upheavaland reconstruction inEast London as a resultof the Olympics, ownerDavid Goodhew knewthat, on relocating, itmade sense to seek toexpand the businessand to be able to offera sheet cutting service. He came to Sagetechand took delivery of one of the Zapkut ZM16 units, capable of cutting 10 ft x 5 ft sheets, attracted by its compact European moving column designand very keen pricing. He recognised that products from the other mainstream vertical panel saw manufacturers were unaffordable for a companyof his size, and that he would not have been able to recover the investment. Any other solution would not have been practical in such a well stockedoperation, where sheet cutting would take up a considerable amount ofroom on conventional table saws.

David’s son Warren, who has now taken over the business, explained:“With not many merchants now offering a cutting service, we gain 20%extra business through this service. After all, we can cut more easily andmore accurately than any builder working out on site, or member of thepublic using their own tools.” Warren also finds that where customers optnot to collect the offcuts, rather than skipping these he can trim themvery profitably for subsequent sale.

Warren highlighted a couple of regular customers, one who comes inand has MDF precisely to size for use in cabinet manufacture, with an-other requiring sheet material to make speaker boxes. As he said of an-other recent job, “The profit we gained covered about 10% of the cost ofthe machine.” He particularly likes the fact that “this seems to work well, and with the extraction, you don’t come away all covered in dust”.

The Zapkut ZM range is just one of the now four ranges of machinesoffered by British company Sagetech, who specialise in vertical panelsaws for the smaller business.

The company offers the Zapkut brand for lighter duties, including a ZKportable unit believed to be unique, and also the heavier duty KF and KKKoolkut machines, where capacities go up to 3.1 x 2.1 m, so are capableof handling the big European “jumbo” sheets.

Sagetech thus provides a very comprehensive range of sizes andmodels, enabling its customers to select the most compact, space-savingsolution appropriate to the business.

So for a timber yard stocking only 8 ft x 4 ft sheets, Sagetech’s modelsare particularly beneficial in saving space.

Roman Timber may be one of the smaller timber merchants, but thatis not to say that it is not very progressive: the company now promotesits products on eBay with the added mention of the cutting service, andthe back-up of local delivery.

As Warren explained, “The machine is particularly useful for cross-cut-ting the big sheets which others find so difficult to do.” He added that hewould be happy for others interested to call him direct on 020 8507 1972.Sagetech Ltd l Tel 0118 970 1950Email [email protected] l www.sagetech.co.uk

DAVID CLOUTING, a leading UK vinyl distribution company, islaunching a new range of vinyl colours. Therange consists of an exten-sive collection of coloursin the latest combinationof B9 texture and printedDecofoil.

B9 is a highly effective tex-ture, which replicates the lookof a solid oak wood panel. LGHausys, as a leading exponentin developing new productsand manufacturing techniques, has successfully developed theB9 emboss to work in tandemwith a subtle print. The overall ef-fect creates a natural lookingpainted wood product that is suit-able for vinyl wrapped doors, fivepiece doors and laminated flatpanels for cut and edge.

Alongside the traditional KBB sec-tors using B9 Painted Oak, the shopfitting and interior design sectors will

benefit from thedurable, functional andflexible capability ofthe B9 Decofoil.

David Clouting isstocking seven B9colours: PorcelainWhite, Ivory, Mussel,

Cashmere, StoneGrey, Light Grey and Graphite Grey.

All colours tie into existing DecofoilGloss foils and complimentary MFCmaterials.

Grey is a tone that is growing rapidlyin popularity in the UK furniture sectorand whilst light grey and graphite grey arerelatively new decors, they are quicklyestablishing themselves as mainstreamgrowth trend colours. Grey can conjure upa cold feeling, but the look is far from this.Light Grey is fresh and clean and GraphiteGrey is quickly taking over as a warmer alter-native to black, and a colour that can bemixed in successfully with lighter tones.

The combination of these colour tones withthe B9 texture is a winning combination thatwill ensure enduring successful product rangesin the coming years.
