The pur- pose of the annual celebration is to inform, inspire and in- vest. The Yankton County affil- iate was featured at the celebration as Julie Dykstra took the group on a tour of the Habitat 500 Bike Ride. Team Yankton has been involved in the annual ride for 15 years and this past year raised just under $20,000! Alisa Ruzicka, stole the show as she shared her experience of traveling to Africa on a Habitat Learn and Build experience. The evening concluded with the recogni- tion of the Supporters of the Year from each affiliate. The Yankton County is blessed to have the support of the two local business part- ners. The first is KYNT, KK93 and KDAM Radio, locally owned by Doyle and Carolyn Becker. Riverfront Broadcast- ing has embraced the work of Habitat’s Christian housing ministry throughout the years. The news team is always the first to get the scoop on our Public Service Announce- ments. Whether it’s a request for homeowners or volun- teers, a groundbreaking or house dedication ceremony, special event or reports from the Habitat 500; Habitat of Yankton County knows that they can count on coverage from KYNT, KK93 and KDAM Radio! In addition, this past July the Riverfront Broadcast- ing team pulled together for a very successful event called the Habitat Stud-A-Thon which helped raise awareness for the need of affordable housing and $10,000 to help pay for building materials for house #37 located at 116 Rainbow Street. The second is ProBuild Inc, a local partner for many years. The staff has gone the extra mile to learn the operations of our build. They work with Habitat to save money on the purchase of building materials and offer discounted pricing options. This past summer, they donated materials and space to help Habitat build a shed/playhouse to be raffled. In addition, they volunteered time to deliver and set up the shed/playhouse and the studs to sell at the Stud-A-Thon. Without the support from these businesses and other local business, Habitat for Hu- manity of Yankton County would be unable to provide af- fordable housing for families in need of a “hand up.” This annual event is a time to celebrate statewide accom- plishments throughout the past year. Habitat affiliates in South Dakota completed the construction of 26 new homes. Habitat affiliates reached an additional 55 families through the Neighborhood Revitaliza- tion Initiative and the A Brush With Kindness Program. By the end of 2012, Habitat for Humanity had built 435 homes in South Dakota, values at $43.5 million. The volunteer investment in local communi- ties in South Dakota per year is over $1,656,000. And most importantly, Habitat home- owners in South Dakota paid over $641,000 in property taxes in 2012. Repair Work To Resume On Monday, Dec. 2, work on the concrete slab below the Gavins Point Spillway, near Yankton is set to re- sume, which will close the parking area to the public until the work is completed. The slab was damaged when record amounts of water were released from the spillway during the 2011 flood. This project is a continua- tion of repairs which began in 2012. This stage of the re- pairs will replace substrate in the gravel frost blanket below the slab and make re- pairs to spillway drains. This project is expected to take several months. The project will be staged at the parking lot located on the north side of the spillway, also known as the Fishing Wall parking area, which re- sults in the parking lot clo- sure. This closure will be 24 hours a day.
