Ardis Connor Ardis Jane Connor age 70, of Yankton, SD (formerly of Mitchell) died Tuesday, De- cember 23, 2014 at the South Dakota Human Serv- ices Center. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at the Will Funeral Chapel with burial at a later date at Cal- vary Cemetery. Ardis Jane Connor, daughter of John and Evelyn (Bracha) Connor, was born December 11, 1944 in Mitchell, SD. She grew up and attended school in Mitchell at Holy Family Ele- mentary School and later at- tended special education classes at Longfellow Ele- mentary. After her schooling she worked at attended Mitchell Adjustment Train- ing Center. In September of 1986, Ardis moved to Yank- ton and lived in several group homes. She worked at Ability Learning Center in Yankton. Ardis moved to the South Dakota Human Serv- ices Center in the late 2000s. She enjoyed bingo, danc- ing, music, cards, word search and going to McDon- ald’s. Ardis collected angels and music boxes. Grateful for having shared her life are her sister, Connie (Gary) Nelson, Mitchell, SD; two brothers, Larry (Donna) Connor, Arte- sian, SD, Gordon (Mary Jo) Connor, Bakersfield, CA; nu- merous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews. Shirley died on Thurs- day, December 25, 2014 at Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Shirley Ann Schnabel was born on Tuesday, May 6, 1947 to Wilmer and Tal- itha (Schempp) Kirschen- man in Scotland, South Dakota. She graduated from Menno High School. In 1963, Shirley met Dennis Schnabel and united in marriage on May 8, 1966. Together they built a home and a life in Tripp, SD. Dennis and Shirley introduced the birth of their first child, Travis on May 13, 1977. Soon there- after, Staci was born on Au- gust 18, 1979. Shirley’s career included 30 years at Northwestern Public Service and 14 years for the Hutchinson County Highway Department. In her free time, Shirley loved sell- ing Tupperware to her friends and family. She treasured traveling with her family – particularly if it in- volved camping. She truly enjoyed busy days espe- cially when they included rummage sales, gardening, polka dancing or cooking. When Shirley did slow down, she was passionate about playing cards and games. In addition, she was a beloved and active mem- ber of the Frieden’s Re- formed Consistory. Above all else, Shirley enjoyed spending time with the people she loved, espe- cially getting together with her brother, his family and friends. Dennis and Shirley were thrilled to welcome their first grandchild, Brooklyn Ocean, in May of 2013. Many trips were taken to visit and spoil her. Little sister, Madi- son Ferrari, arrived in No- vember of 2014 just in time for grandma and grandpa to visit at Thanksgiving. Many special memories were made, and Shirley loved every minute of being a grandmother. Shirley died with family by her side on Thursday, December 25, 2014 at Avera- McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls having attained the age of 67 years, 7 months, and 19 days. She is remembered and survived by her husband of 48 years, Dennis Schnabel of Tripp; son Travis (Shanna) Schnabel of Savage, MN; daughter Staci (Travis) Krant of Bellevue, WA; grandchildren Brooklyn and Madison Schnabel; brother Ronald (Phyllis) Kirschenman of Freeman; and many other beloved family members including a niece, nephews, an uncle, many great-nieces and nephews, cousins, and very special friends. Johnson, age 89, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton. A joint funeral service for Carl and his wife, Vanice, who passed away on Novem- ber 2, 2013, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, De- cember 30, 2014 at First United Methodist Church in Yankton with Reverend Ron Johnson officiating. Visita- tion is 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, December 29 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Burial for Carl and Vanice with military honors will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, South Dakota in late spring 2015. Hon- orary pall- bearers are members of the Yankton Lions Club. Carl was born March 7, 1925 in Springfield, South Dakota to Alfred and Eliza- beth (Lang) Johnson. He grew up in Springfield where he graduated high school. Carl achieved his dream of joining the Army Air Corp, in which he served as a naviga- tor in England during World War II. After the war, he at- tended Yankton College on the GI Bill, where he met Van- ice Lorene Jones. They mar- ried in Yankton on November 30, 1947 and were blessed with their first son, Carl Jr., the following year. Carl re- turned to military service in the newly formed Air Force and served as a pilot in Japan during the Korean War. Vanice left Japan in 1950 to give birth to Barbara Jo in Yankton. The family then re- located to bases in North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Ne- vada, where Donn Charles was born in 1953. Carl con- tinued his service in Arizona, Florida, and Bermuda, where he and Vanice welcomed their fourth and final child, Steven Curtis, in 1957. Relo- cating nearer his extended family, Carl served with the Strategic Air Command at Of- futt Air Force Base in Belle- vue, NE for six years. The whole family then moved to Okinawa for two years, but Vanice and the kids returned to the US for Carl’s tour in Taiwan during the Vietnam War. Carl’s final assignment was at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, SD. Carl’s military career spanned nearly 27 years, and he re- tired a highly decorated Lieutenant Colonel in March 1970. After retirement, Carl continued to serve his com- munity as a Boy Scout Execu- tive in Huron, SD and Bismarck, ND; his sons joined the Scouts, and Vanice and Barb helped with sum- mer camps at Big Stone Lake, SD. In 1976, Carl and Vanice returned to Yankton, where Carl worked at the Fish Hatchery for several years. Carl fulfilled his love of serv- ice with the Emergency Man- agement Program, including Search and Rescue, Civil De- fense, storm watching, and EMT training. Carl was a member of VFW Post 791, the Lewis and Clark Shrine Club and Elks Lodge in Yank- ton, but his devotion lay with the Yankton Lions Club. He served as President, Secre- tary, and Treasurer of the Club, dedicated 25 years to the Flag Project and 20 years to the Vision Committee, and was chosen Lion of the Year in 2009. Carl also enjoyed marksmanship and hunting with his family and friends, especially fellow Lion Frank Arnesen. Carl and Vanice are sur- vived by four children: Carl Jr. (married to Val) Johnson of Plattsmouth, NE, Barbara (married to Gary) Coles of Williamston, MI, Donn John- son of Superior, CO, and Steven Johnson of Marietta, GA; nine grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren, and Vanice’s brother, Fred Jones of Tuscon, AZ. They were preceded in death by their parents; Carl’s brothers, John and Charles Johnson, and sister Mary Lou Nelson; and Vanice’s sisters, Arlys Jones and Carol Williams. A joint funeral service forCarl and his wife, Vanice,who passed away on Novem-ber 2, 2013, will be held at10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, De-cember 30, 2014 at FirstUnited Methodist Church inYankton with Reverend RonJohnson officiating. Visita-tion is 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. onMonday, December 29 at theWintz & Ray Funeral Home inYankton.

Visitation will continueone hour prior to the funeralat the church.

1925 in Springfield, SouthDakota to Alfred and Eliza-beth (Lang) Johnson. Hegrew up in Springfield wherehe graduated high school.Carl achieved his dream ofjoining the Army Air Corp, inwhich he served as a naviga-tor in England during WorldWar II. After the war, he at-tended Yankton College onthe GI Bill, where he met Van-ice Lorene Jones. They mar-ried in Yankton on November

30, 1947 and were blessedwith their first son, Carl Jr.,the following year. Carl re-turned to military service inthe newly formed Air Forceand served as a pilot inJapan during the Korean War.Vanice left Japan in 1950 togive birth to Barbara Jo inYankton. The family then re-located to bases in NorthCarolina, Oklahoma, and Ne-vada, where Donn Charleswas born in 1953. Carl con-tinued his service in Arizona,Florida, and Bermuda, wherehe and Vanice welcomedtheir fourth and final child,Steven Curtis, in 1957. Relo-cating nearer his extendedfamily, Carl served with theStrategic Air Command at Of-futt Air Force Base in Belle-vue, NE for six years. Thewhole family then moved toOkinawa for two years, but

Vanice and the kids returnedto the US for Carl’s tour inTaiwan during the VietnamWar. Carl’s final assignmentwas at Ellsworth Air ForceBase in Rapid City, SD. Carl’smilitary career spannednearly 27 years, and he re-tired a highly decoratedLieutenant Colonel in March1970. After retirement, Carlcontinued to serve his com-munity as a Boy Scout Execu-tive in Huron, SD andBismarck, ND; his sonsjoined the Scouts, and Vaniceand Barb helped with sum-mer camps at Big Stone Lake,SD. In 1976, Carl and Vanicereturned to Yankton, whereCarl worked at the FishHatchery for several years.Carl fulfilled his love of serv-ice with the Emergency Man-agement Program, includingSearch and Rescue, Civil De-

fense, storm watching, andEMT training. Carl was amember of VFW Post 791,the Lewis and Clark ShrineClub and Elks Lodge in Yank-ton, but his devotion lay withthe Yankton Lions Club. Heserved as President, Secre-tary, and Treasurer of theClub, dedicated 25 years tothe Flag Project and 20 yearsto the Vision Committee, andwas chosen Lion of the Yearin 2009. Carl also enjoyedmarksmanship and huntingwith his family and friends,especially fellow Lion FrankArnesen.

Carl and Vanice are sur-vived by four children: CarlJr. (married to Val) Johnsonof Plattsmouth, NE, Barbara(married to Gary) Coles ofWilliamston, MI, Donn John-son of Superior, CO, andSteven Johnson of Marietta,

GA; nine grandchildren; 18great grandchildren, andVanice’s brother, Fred Jonesof Tuscon, AZ. They werepreceded in death by theirparents; Carl’s brothers,John and Charles Johnson,and sister Mary Lou Nelson;and Vanice’s sisters, ArlysJones and Carol Williams.

PIERRE — Eight communitiesand an energy company will jointhe South Dakota Governor’s Officeof Economic Development (GOED)in promoting South Dakota at theShooting, Hunting and OutdoorTrade (SHOT) Show in Las VegasJan. 20-23, 2015.

“As South Dakota’s SHOT indus-try continues to grow, the SHOTShow is a great outlet for us andour co-op partners to showcase the

benefits of doing business here,”said Gov. Dennis Daugaard. “It’sone of our most successful tradeshows — which is why we continueto attend the event after 13 years.”
