A small act on the play — The Merchant of Ven-ice — was enacted to mark the birth anniversary of the greatest writer William Shakespeare by the stu-dents blending talent and creativity. Principal M P Philip emphasised about the importance of the day and the language itself to sensitise children on the importance of English language and to inculcate the habit of reading English books and poems.

You can eliminate the risk of salmonella in recipes that call for raw eggs - mousses,

Caesar salad dressings, frothy whis-key sours - by using pasteurized eggs, but they can be difficult to come by. You can create your own using the sous-vide machine. The number of them you can pasteur-ise at one time depends on the size of your sous-vide vessel.

Note that these pasteurized eggs will still be raw but will look differ-ent inside; the whites will be slightly opaque and thickened, which means you’ll need to take care in cracking them to avoid introduc-ing any shell into them. A firm crack on a flat hard surface should do the trick.

This recipe is designed to work with an immersion circulator/sous-vide device.

MAKE AHEAD: The chilled sous-vide eggs can be refrigerated

for up to 2 weeks.Adapted from “Sous-Vide at

Home.”

INGREDIENTS: 1 to 12 large eggs

STEPSFill a deep pot with water. Stand

the immersion circulator/sous-vide device in it, plug it in and set the temperature at 134.6 degrees (57 degrees Celsius).

Once the water temperature is reached, use a slotted spoon to

gently lower each egg into the water, making sure they are all sub-merged. Cook for 2 hours.

Fill a bowl with cool water and ice.

Use that same spoon to trans-fer the eggs to the ice-water bath to cool, which should take about 10 minutes. Use right away, or refrig-erate for up to 2 weeks.

Makes 1/2 cupThe precise temperatures of sous-vide cooking

produce consistently good results in less time than it usually takes to infuse bitters.

This recipe is designed to work with an immersion circulator/sous-vide device.

MAKE AHEAD: The bitters can stored away from sunlight at a cool room temperature for up to 6 months.

Ingredients1/4 cup whole coffee beans, preferably dark roast1 teaspoon whole black peppercorns6 green cardamom pods, lightly crushed1/2 cup dark rum2 tablespoons dark brown sugar

StepsFill a deep pot with water. Stand the immersion

circulator/sous-vide device in it, plug it in and set the temperature at 140 degrees (60 degrees Celsius).

Combine the coffee beans, peppercorns, cardamom, rum and dark brown sugar in a quart-size freezer zip-top bag.

Seal the bag by using a water displacement method: Place the bag into a sink or deep bowl filled halfway with water. Submerge the bag with only the top exposed; the pressure should force most of the air out of the bag. Once the liquid rises to just below the zipper seal, seal the bag.

Once the sous-vide water temperature is reached, add the sealed bag so it is submerged. Set the timer to cook for 1 hour.

Remove the bag from the water bath. Let the bag cool to room temperature, which should take about 30 minutes.

Open the bag and pour its contents through a fine-mesh strainer over a 1/2 pint jar. Discard the solids. Use right away, or seal tightly for storing.

HEALTH TUESDAY 2 MAY 201710

People having a non-O blood group — A, B, AB — may be at 9 per cent higher risk of suffering a heart attack and overall

cardiovascular mortality compared to those with O-blood group, a research has showed.

The findings revealed that the higher risk may be due to having greater concentrations of von Willebrand factor — a blood clotting protein — which has been associated with thrombotic events. People with A blood group are known to have higher cholesterol, which is a leading

risk factor for heart attack. Further, those with non-O blood group also have higher galectin-3, a protein linked to inflammation and worse out-comes in heart failure patients, the researchers said.

“The study demonstrates that having a non-O blood group is associated with a 9 per cent increased risk of coronary events and a 9 per cent increased risk of cardiovascular events, especially myocardial infarction,” said lead author Tessa Kole, student at the

University Medical Centre Groningen in the Netherlands. The study was presented at the Heart Failure 2017 and the 4th World Congress on Acute Heart Failure.

For the study, the team conducted a meta-analysis on O and non-O blood groups and incident cardiovascular events includ-ing myocardial infarction (heart attack), coronary artery disease, ischaemic heart dis-ease, heart failure, cardiovascular events and cardiovascular mortality.

If you want to have a pain-free ride in your golden years, bet-ter ditch the couch now and get walking. According to health experts, failing to adopt

regular exercise regime early may lead to weaker bones later, leading to joint and bone problems such as arthritis and osteoporosis and, even, bone fractures.

Studies suggest that bones respond better to particular types of exercise, including weight-bear-ing exercises, resistance training, high-impact exercise and balance training.

“Resistance training or plyomet-ric training help reduce the levels of protein sclerostin, the excess of which can adversely affect bone density. On the other hand, it increases insulin like growth fac-tor 1 (IGF-1, a hormone that improves bone growth),” Rishabh Telang, a fitness expert and level-2 crossFit trainer with Bengaluru-based Cult fitness chain, said.

“In response to weight bearing activities, Osteo-blasts (bone-form-ing cells) get migrated to the surface of the bone and starts the process of bone modelling. This entire proc-ess of Osteo blast migrating to the bony area improves bone density,” Telang added.

A recent study, published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, found that adolescents who participated in moderate-to intense physical activity during

growth years exhibited greater bone mass in areas that contribute to superior bone strength.

“Bone health is crucial to our fit-ness and it begins with maintaining a healthy bone mass. For young adults, regular exercise, well-bal-anced calcium diet, exposure to sunlight are extremely important,” Rajiv Thukral, Senior Consultant-Orthopedics, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, said.

Muscle-strengthening exercises are any activity that requires your muscles to work harder than nor-mal. This type of resistance exercise works the tendons that attach mus-cle to bone, which in turn boosts bone strength.

Strength training also results into muscle hypertrophy — increase in size of muscle cells — which increases the force exerted on the bones. “In response to that, the

bones must increase in mass and strength to support the structure of hypertrophied muscles. Thus, an increase in muscle mass and strength may result in a corre-sponding increase in bone mineral density,” Telang said.

“People can also start with daily brisk walks and should not exhaust their body by sudden and extreme exercises in the gym,” Thukral cau-tioned. Yoga is another option that can be explored by people who do not want to go to the gym.

“Stretching, yoga and brisk walk, etc. could be extremely beneficial in strengthening the bones,” Thukral added. The experts also warned that women over age 50, especially post-menopausal women, have the greatest risk of developing weaker bones.

“One should also get the regular bone densitometry test done to

know the real status of bone health. Older adults should do some phys-ical activity — let be it a simple morning walk,” noted Ishwar Bohra, Senior Consultant Joint Replace-ment & Arthroscopy Surgeon, BLK Super Speciality Hospital.

It is also pertinent to focus on foods that are rich in calcium, Vita-min D and other nutrients as these are important for bone and overall health. A diet low in calcium can also lead to diminished bone den-sity, early bone loss and susceptibility to fractures.

“It is very important to start exer-cising at an early age as it indirectly keeps joints well lubricated as well as bones strong and healthy by doing load-sharing between bone and shoulders,” added Sanjay Gupta, Associate Director (Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement Department) at Jaypee Hospital.

After Morocco and Vienna, the team of

“Tiger Zinda Hai” will shoot in Abu Dhabi over a 65-day sched-

ule from May 4 at multiple locations in the city. A set is being designed by some of those workers who helped to build the “Star Wars” set in 2013.

The Yash Raj Films (YRF) project is a sequel to the blockbuster film “Ek Tha Tiger”. Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, it features superstar Salman Khan and actress Katrina Kaif, who are both happy to be shooting there.

Salman said in a statement: “’Tiger Zinda Hai’ is a film of sizea-ble scale and context. Abu Dhabi, with a variety of locations, and gra-cious hosts, is ideal to shoot for a film like this one. I hope that the entire unit will enjoy our time here.”

Katrina feels the city fits in per-fectly with the movie’s story. “I look forward to shooting in

eye-catching locations and on the impressive set here,” she added.

Work has begun on the con-struction of a 20,000 sq metres backlot for the movie’s shoot.

The set is being designed by Rajnish Hedao from Acropolis DMG, and over 150 workers will be on site to create the film’s main set, many

twofour54’s Film and TV Serv-ices division will provide production services for the movie, with a crew of 300 expected to work on the

movie. Government support will come from the UAE military, which will provide military equipment, including choppers during the shoot.

Officials in Abu Dhabi note Bol-lywood’s increasing attraction towards the city as a shooting destination.

Maryam Al Mheiri, CEO of Media Zone Authority - Abu Dhabi, said: “Abu Dhabi is gaining trac-tion in India as the emerging new home of Bollywood, as a result of what we can offer this dynamic industry: a generous 30 per cent rebate, a huge variety of locations, and crew with Bollywood experience.”

A South India sensation, a Hispanic-focused comedy and the highest-grossing film ever directed by an

African American made up the top three films in North America on a culturally diverse box office weekend.

As expected, it was another run-away weekend for “The Fate of the Furious”, which took No. 1 for the third straight week with $19.4m, according to studio estimates on Sun-day. The Universal Pictures release also throttled past $1bn globally, and passed its predecessor, “Furious 7,” to become the highest-grossing imported film in China with $361m.

The “Fast and the Furious” fran-chise, the latest of which is helmed by F Gary Gray, has always been held up as a model of the diverse block-buster, given its cast led by Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson. But the smaller films that trailed it over the weekend also reflected the box-office might of often underserved audiences.

In second domestically with $12m and drawing an overwhelm-ingly Hispanic crowd was Eugenio Derbez’s comedy, “How to Be a Latin Lover”. The film is easily the biggest success yet for Pantelion, the Latino-oriented joint venture of Lionsgate and Grupo Televisa.

“How to Be a Latin Lover” co-stars Salma Hayek, Rob Lowe and Kristen Bell. But its top draw is Der-bez, whose “Instructions Not

Included” was the highest-gross-ing Spanish-language film in North America in 2013. The audience for

“How to be a Latin Lover” was 89 percent Hispanic.

In third was “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion”, a so-called Tollywood (Telugu language) film from South India, which pulled in a remarka-ble $10.1m despite playing on just 420 screens. (“The Fate of the Furi-ous” played on more than 4,000.)

“Baahubali 2” even bested a pair of Hollywood’s biggest stars in Emma Watson and Tom Hanks. Their terri-bly reviewed thriller “The Circle,” distributed by STX Films on behalf of EuropaCorp, opened with $9.3m.

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for comScore, said

such global weekends at the box office will become more common. “In what is a slow and would otherwise be unremarkable weekend, this is a really interesting lineup of films,” said Dergarabedian. “This is the final weekend before the summer season kicks off and the blockbusters hit theaters. But this weekend is marked by an incredible amount of multicul-tural content. It reflects the world that we’re living in.”

“Baahubali 2” follows the 2015 original that set box-office records in India, a breakthrough for a non-Hindi film. The 2015 film grossed $9.3m in the US and more than $100m worldwide. With $1.8m on domestic IMAX screens, a record for a foreign language film on IMAX,

“Baahubali 2” may break more records. Its success isn’t surprising to everyone.

“We were expecting exactly the numbers we’re seeing right now. We’re happy our expectations were

right,” said Soma Kancherla of the film’s North American distributor, Great India Films. “I know for a few people they’re like, ‘Wow,’ but to break even, we needed to make that kind of money.”

The summer movie season begins next week with “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”. With the Marvel behemoth on deck, few new films were released in an otherwise quiet weekend. Disney’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” sequel began its international rollout over the weekend, opening in 37 territories ahead of its North American debut. It earned an esti-mated $101.2m, a promising start for what’s expected to be one of the sum-mer’s biggest hits.

“Guardians” will likely be the third $1bn movie in 2017, following

“Beauty and the Beast” and “The Fate of the Furious”. Disney said

“Vol. 2” is running 57 percent ahead of the pace of the original, which made $773.3m in 2014.

Actress-filmmaker Angelina Jolie has reportedly made a Google alert on actor and estranged husband Brad Pitt’s name to keep tabs on him. “Ange-lina wants to know exactly what Brad is up to at all times. To say she isn’t

able to move on would be an understatement,” a source told hollywoodlife.com.“She likes to always be in control and she knows that once the divorce is final-

ised she will have no hold over him any more. It’s pretty sad really, seeing as she was the one who wanted the divorce in the first place. I suspect she was actually shocked he didn’t try and fight more for her, her whole plan pretty much back-fired,” added the source. Jolie decided to end the marriage in September. Since then, the two have been in divorce and custody battle. Although the “Maleficent” actress is the one who wanted to split, she is “terrrified Brad will move on and find love with someone new”. “It’s one of those she can’t live with him, and she can’t live without him, things. Brad and Angie had scorching chemistry and she just can’t handle seeing him with another woman. She definitely gets very jealous.”

Dubai has become the first city in the world to get its own Microsoft font, the media

reported. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai’s Crown Prince and Chair-man of the Executive Council, launched the Dubai font on Sunday.

He directed government insti-tutions all across the city to adopt the font, saying it is considered a positive shift that will boost the emirate’s competitiveness in smart technology.

“This should be a commitment from the Dubai government to guarantee the dissemination and success of this initiative on a local and global level,” Sheikh Hamdan said, noting that the font is the new tool for a more tolerant and happy world.

The font, now available to more than 100 million users of Microsoft Office 365 around the world, is the first font to be created by a city and named after it. Designed for more than 180 countries and 23 lan-guages integrating Arabic and Latin

typefaces, the Dubai Font, which will expand over the next phase to include more languages, is aimed to reflect the city’s symbols of tol-erance, happiness and respect, enabling people to express, com-municate and connect.

The Executive Council of Dubai also enabled individuals to down-load the font from the website: www.dubaifont.com and integrate it into the system for free.

Sheikh Hamdan had directed the General Secretariat of the Exec-utive Council in January 2016 to

work on the design of a package of electronic fonts bearing the name of Dubai to include a distinc-tive font for the Emirate in both Arabic and English, later expand-ing to 21 other languages.

Nadine Chahine, Type Direc-tor and Legibility Expert at Monotype UK, led the design team of six who worked on developing the font.

The font, available in three styles as ‘Dubai’, ‘Dubai Medium’ and ‘Dubai Light’, can be in italics, underlined and bold.

Google is preparing to introduce an ad-blocker to

Chrome browser despite fears that it would hit their online advertising revenues — a move that has been hailed by pub-lishers in the US and Europe, the Financial Times reported.

The move comes after Google was recently criticised for placement of ads on its video host-ing platform YouTube.

In March this year, several major brands boycotted YouTube and have their ads out from the platform as they protested the placement of ads which were appearing next to offensive con-tent, including videos posted by terrorism-affiliated groups.

According to the experts, the boycott could cost YouTube’s par-ent company Google nearly $750m in revenue.

Google, at that time, promised that it was taking steps to deal with the problem and the move to intro-duce ad-blockers in Chrome seems

one of the steps the company has taken to resolve the issue.

Details of the plan have not been disclosed but Google has said it held “initial conversations” on the idea with publishers.

According to NetMarketShare — a company that provides market share statistics for internet tech-nologies — Chrome is a dominant player in the internet browsing market with a near 60 per cent share.

“The blocker would be likely to

target certain types of ads that have been found to frustrate read-ers, such as pop-ups and auto-playing videos,” the Finan-cial Times report said on Sunday.

Initially, it was expected that the company’s ad-blocking plan was a blow to the publishers who are struggling to compete with Google and Facebook for online ad revenues. But the report said publishers are encouraged by the company’s move as a way to clean up online advertising.

Micro-blogging website Twitter has partnered with Bloomberg Media

to stream news round-the-clock on the social networking plat-form. “It is going to be focused on the most important news for an intelligent audience around the globe and it’s going to be broader in focus than our exist-ing network,” The Wall Street Journal quoted Justin Smith, Bloomberg Media’s Chief Exec-utive Officer, as saying.

The news service which is yet to be named will be sup-ported by ads and Bloomberg will have control over the con-tent of the feed. The service is expected to go live later this year.

The service will be made up of live news reporting from the news outlet’s bureaus around the world, as well as a curated and verified mix of video posted on Twitter by the social-media plat-form’s users. To stream tournaments and other e-sports events live, Twitter last month announced its partnership with ESL and Dreamhack -- two of the biggest organisations in the pro-gaming world.
