Oxygen in everyday lifeOXYGEN IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PARTICLES on earth. People use it for many different things, other than breathing.

Industries use the gas for cutting, welding and melting metals.Oxygen takes up one-fifth of air volume, two-thirds of the human body and 87% water. Of all the uses for oxygen, sustaining life is the most important

Where does oxygen come from? There are two natural sources of oxygen. The main way is via photosynthesis which creates about 98% of the Earth's oxygen. The other way is breaking down water molecules by ultraviolet radiation and this makes up the other 1-2%.

Oxygen ToxicityThis condition takes place when someone breathes pure oxygen. The gas is essential for living, but only up to a point. Humans can only breathe 21 percent oxygen. The air that humans breathe in is composed of nitrogen and other elements. When too much pure oxygen is inhaled, humans will experience difficulty breathing and tunnel vision.21%

Early experiments, and the discovery of oxygenThe word oxygen comes from two Greek words. oxys which means sharp or acid, and genes which means born or former.

One of the earliest experiments with oxygen was done by a Greekphilosopher,Philo of Byzantium in the 2nd century(BCE).

by using his model, Scientists figured out that oxygen is essential for fire

Oxygen was discovered by a number of scientists. The first discovery was made by a Swedish scientist, Carl Wilhelm Scheele in 1772. In the meantime, a British chemist Joseph Priestley, discovered oxygen independently in 1774.
