Developing expert analyticalmethods

Picture clear method editorThe editor of methods allows easily definingthe elements you need to analyze and theassociated parameters for excitation, acquisition and concentration calculation. The internal standards definition and theline selection are also very simple. Thenecessary Setting-Up Samples, with theType Standards and Control Samples can bealso clearly defined together with theassociated actions to be taken.

Advanced analysis featuresYou can include in your method theacquisition of instrument status duringquantitative analysis. Values measured ordefined outside the instrument can also beincluded as manual input values inyour methods.

Comprehensive mathematical formulaecalculate pseudo values based on measuredchannels, status or manual inputs: the userselects the values to include in the formulaefrom the raw intensity up to the finalconcentration.

For some alloy analysis applications, the Type Standardization supplies ultimateaccuracy for specific alloy types against acalibration.

The automatic method choicefunction selects the optimum analyticalmethod, grade or type standard according tothe analysis result without requiring anyoperator input. Particularly suited for thecalibration curves selection per alloy family.

The recalculation of results helps yousave time and operating costs. Without re-measuring samples, you can verifystandardization, update a type standard, check unknown samples or include anyvalue obtained by other techniques.

Defining standards and calibratingyour methodsOXSAS incorporates a comprehensivefunction allowing you to create and updatecalibrations at any time.

The correction model used for opticalemission compensates for spectralinterferences and for matrix interferences anduses the concentration of interfering elementsfor corrections. This enhances accuracy incomparison to intensity based models.

Calibration curves are calculated forabsolute or ratio concentrations, dependingon the definition of each component in themethod’s editor.

Calibration curves are calculated usingthe multi-variable regression (MVR)algorithm. It uses the least squaresregression to find the polynomial coefficientsof the best fit curve. Additive ormultiplicative corrections are simultaneouslycalculated together with the calibrationcurve, using linear or power model. Thebreak point between successive curves ofthe same component can be graphically set-up. Calibration curves can be calculated forphysical components or formulae calculatedpseudos. The line overlap for intensitycorrections and background correction canalso be performed.

Batches allow defining in advance the data and analysis parameters for unknownand standard sample lists. With powerful batch operation and monitoring tools.

The graphical User Interface is easy, flexible and clear: it displays the curves ofmultiple analytes combined with theirnumerical data, it allows comparing onscreen the calibration among severaldifferent methods, it calculates and savesall base curves on one click, etc.

Calibration standards are defined usingan effective editor. You can import or exportthem using files in XML or CSV format, directly compatible with Microsoft® Excelfor instance.

Curve fit correlation displays analyticalinformation such as: Standard Error ofEstimate, Correlation Coefficient andBackground Equivalent Concentration, andshows samples excluded from thecalculations.

Performing your analyses

Pre-defined parameters simplify yourroutine analysesOXSAS assists your operators in achievingthe analyses easily and quickly. EachOXSAS task includes a template ofparameters including the sampleidentification, how to perform the analysis, how to display and process their result tomeet the specific requirements for eachcategory of your samples. Thanks to thesemechanisms, running repeated jobs can beeasily done by selecting the matchinganalysis template and introducing thepredefined identity.Parameters that can be controlled:• Selection of the default analytical method.

Alternatively, type standard calibration canbe used. If a grade is selected, theanalysis result is checked against thistarget upon completion of the analysis

• Management of the number ofmeasurement runs and of the averagingmethod. The run averaging can be selectedto be controlled manually by the operator.Or it can be controlled automatically withno check, using reproducibility checkagainst fluctuation tolerance limits orusing statistical reproducibility check

• Sample identification with unlimitednumber of fields and up to 255 characterseach. Data types are various:alphanumeric, numeric, auto-incrementing, date & time, fix text andoperator name. Default value andmaximum length can be defined

• Content and format of the display: e.g.element, grade limits, layout, colorscheme, font details, element precisionand units

• Manual or automatic processing of theresult at the end of the analysis such aschecking the result against grade limitsand sending it

Routine analysesFor an even easier routine operation, shortcuts can start the analysis of sampleson one click or one key press. The matchinganalysis template is preselected and youcan predefine the value of parameters suchas the method or the sample identification. You can also select which parameters youroperators are allowed to edit.

Flexible batchesOXSAS introduces the concept of batch. Abatch is a list of samples and associatedoperations such as routine analysis orstandardization update. Any change inmeasuring order and inserting or appendingsamples to a running batch, modifyingsample data and measurement parametersis done easily and quickly. A batch can beinterrupted and restarted at anytime.

Batches can be prepared in advancewithout limitation.

The analysis of calibration standards,setting-up samples, type standards and controlsamples can also be grouped in batches.

The recurring measurement of samplessuch as control samples can be saved insample lists for later re-use and instantinsertion in any running or waiting batch.Sample lists can also be used as templates:they speed up the definition of the samplesand the selection of their measurementparameters.

Several functions can define batcheswith minimum or no user input. Thanks tothe built-in templates, most of thedefinitions are automatic. For instance:• Calibration sample measurements• Setting-up, control, or type standards that

need to be measured: e.g. if their validityperiod has expired

Speed functions allow incrementing orcopying the value of an analytical parameter,an ID field or a sample position in one go.

Viewing, editing, validating andprocessing analysis resultsUpon completion of the analysis, the result isdisplayed according to the predefined format. The user can apply other formats for instanceto check full details, such as calculation stepsand non reported elements.

Concentration values are displayedwith up to 25 attributes (flags) with userdefinable colors and font styles, e.g. whenvalues are out-of-calibration or above thechecked grade range, etc.

The identity and the concentration ofthe analysis can be edited, if enabled. Aresult can also be recalculated, for instanceusing another calibration, or changing theselection of the runs to average.

The result processing such as on-linetransmission and grade checking, isperformed directly after the analysis whenset to automatic. This mode is ideal forroutine analyses and batches. Theprocessing can also be applied on useraction and repeated as necessary. Anoperator validation can be made mandatory.

Recent analyses are shown in theanalysis screen and are put in tabs next tothe current one. Their access is very quick,e.g. for comparison. The next sample caneven be started before processing thecurrent analysis result.

Instrument Quality Assurance

Integrated SPC-Basic: pro-activecontrol cannot be simplerSPC-Basic performs the routine check of theinstrument using Statistical Process Controltechniques. SPC-Basic features: • The interval between control analyses

can be set per sample. A schedulerreminds when the timer is over
