Events are taking place all over Oxfordshire in 2013 to celebrate the centenary of the production of the first car at the Cowley factory in 1913: On 30 May (10am – 1pm) and 20 August (1pm – 4pm), there’s a chance for everyone to see the special 100 Years of Car Making Centenary Exhibition at MINI Plant Oxford or why not book a tour of the car plant and exhibition at other times by going to the website:

William Morris was the driving force behind this innovative industry and rose from humble beginnings in Oxford to become a multi-millionaire who donated huge sums to medical research and helped found an Oxford college. The first car left the old Military Academy on Hollow Way on 28 March 1913 and from there William Morris’ production plant expanded from its location a few hundred metres from Plant Oxford’s current buildings where the popular MINI is built today.

December 2012 – December 2013

Britten in Oxford, a year-long celebration of his life and work in his centenary year, will promote a wide variety of events, including a Young Britten weekend at The North Wall Arts Centre, a study weekend at Wolfson College, a Choral composition course, talks and master classes. This exciting programme will culminate in a Centenary Birthday Concert at the Sheldonian Theatre on 22 November.

Oxford Castle Unlocked is a 1000-year old castle, which was also used as a place of incarceration for over 800 years. St Giles transforms into Oxford’s Christmas extravaganza on Friday 22 November from 5pm, with an outdoor stage packed with music and dance performances, a children’s lantern parade, food, drink and craft market stalls and a fun fair. Many cultural venues will be open around the city, offering family workshops, experiences and entertainment. The market will continue over the weekend.

Cogges Manor Farmwitney

The Cogges Heritage Trust re-opened Cogges Manor Farm to the public on 17 July 2011. In 2013, Cogges opens up the excavated moat and islands for visitors to explore the natural habitat, with welly walks by the banks of the river Windrush. Check the website for the launch of a fantastic new adventure play area and a ‘mini Cogges’ for weatherproof fun is being created for young children in the new soft play barn.

Founded nearly 50 years ago by a small group of artists and architects Modern Art Oxford has an enviable reputation of presenting leading contemporary artists as part of an exciting contemporary art programme for a broad range of audiences.

Highlights of 2013/14 include from 21 September to 17 November, British artist Tim Head’s work encompassing installation, painting, photography and works for public spaces as well as light, slide and video projections.

The Bullpen Foundry Abingdon

The Bullpen is an artists’ collective, supporting new and emerging artists as well as established sculptors. Moving into a new venue near Abingdon in 2013, The Bullpen hosts artist masterclasses, exhibitions, workshops and iron pour days. Their area of speciality is iron and bronze casting, and they use and teach traditional processes to make contemporary sculpture.

Stradivarius is the only maker of musical instruments whose name ranks alongside those of the great composers. This exhibition will be the first major show in the UK to explore his life and work and will put on show the twenty most important violins in the world, some of which have never before been displayed in public.

Francis Bacon and Henry Moore

12 September 2013 – 5 January 2014

This landmark exhibition will give an insight into the connections between these two great 20th century British artists. The exhibition will include up to 20 sculptures by Moore and 20 paintings by Bacon juxtaposed to bring out both the similarities and differences between their work.

Visit ‘Explore Oxford’ for the only galleries dedicated to the history of the City and University and discover the places, the people and the things that made Oxford today. Theatre Scratch NightThe Old Fire Station

3rd Tuesday of the Month

Theatre Scratch, presented by UnderConstruction Theatre Company and The Old Fire Station, is a monthly platform for artists, performers, writers and directors to share work in a theatre space. The night will usually consist of three short pieces performed with feedback given immediately afterwards in a forum style with group discussion.

Catweazle ClubEast Oxford Community Centre

Every Thursday night

The Catweazle Club has been going for seventeen years and lies somewhere between a folk club and an open mike night, with a really amazing atmosphere of creativity and sharing amongst its dedicated followers. Troubadour Matt Sage set up Catweazle with the deranged fantasy that people of a like mind might come together for inspiration, the sharing of ideas and a real sense of community. This became a reality and Catweazle has reached cult-like status in Oxford.

Science Oxford encourages the pursuit of science and enterprise. In 2013 Science Oxford is collaborating with West Oxford Community Association to present Oxford Festival of Nature, BioBlitz & West Oxford Fun Day in Botley Park on 12 – 13 July. The festival provides recreation, welfare & education opportunities within West Oxford. They have organised a day of wildlife orientated fun and learning with a host of wildlife experts. Come along for birds of prey, bat walks, crayfish trapping, worm charming & much more!

The Oxfordshire Science Festival offers events for young children right through to adults.

There are some events for professional scientists and people with an interest in science, however most events are aimed at regular people who just want to have fun and perhaps explore a topic that is important to them such as climate change, inheritance, music or sport.

Culham Centre Fusion EnergyCulham, Oxfordshire

Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE) is the UK’s national laboratory for fusion research. CCFE (formerly known as UKAEA Culham) is based at Culham Science Centre in Oxfordshire, and is owned and operated by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority. Diamond Light SourceHarwell Science and innovation Campus in Oxfordshire

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. Diamond is a particle accelerator which uses a beam of electrons travelling at almost the speed of light to create intense, powerful beams of light, used to study the atomic and molecular structure of materials. Ultimate Picture PalaceThe Ultimate Picture Palace in East Oxford is a privately owned independent cinema showing a mix of independent, art house, mainstream and classic films. The single screen auditorium has 116 seats and the small bar at the back serves drinks and snacks for you to take to your seats before the start of the film. Open every day of the week for two evening screenings, ‘Friday Late’ during University term time, Baby Club on Thursdays and Kid’s Club on Saturdays.

Human Rights Film FestivalEvery February

In 2014 the Oxford Brookes University Human Rights Film Festival will be celebrating its 12th year. The first festival opened in March 2003, sponsored by Oxfam, and lasted 5 days. The festival is free and hopes to raise awareness about a range of human rights concerns among students and the wider Oxford community. Each year the festival engages academics, film directors, actors and celebrities to present films and take part in the lively audience discussions following the screenings.

Film Oxford & SummerscreenFilm Oxford is Oxford’s centre for film and digital media where you can learn the skills, make the films and show the world. Their popular annual Film Festival, Summerscreen runs from 20th to 28th July in 2013 offering workshops in animation, special effects, news production and short drama alongside film tours, cinema premieres and outdoor screenings. Join Film Oxford and partners and enjoy a week of ‘film, fun and fantasy’ at the beginning of the summer holidays.
