Most modern computers have a DVD-drive. You can use this machine to listen tomusic CDs and to watch your favouritefilms. You can also use it to read CD-ROMs.CD-ROMs hold the same information asthousands of pages of a book. Why willpeople buy books from bookshops if theycan read them on their computer screen? Why will they borrow books fromlibraries? Research recently showed thatbooks and newspapers are still verypopular. Computers are expensive, butbooks and newspapers cost very little. Butthe big advantage is that you can pick up abook quickly and easily and then put itdown again. You don’t have to worry aboutopening programs or saving data.

Most experts say that books will continueto exist, but that we will use them in adifferent way. People didn’t stop writingletters after the invention of the telephonein 1876. Firstly, not everyone had atelephone. But, more importantly, peoplestarted sending letters for differentpurposes. Today, people don’t writepersonal letters. They use their mobilephones and e-mail instead. Similarly, before the invention of the camera, weused paintings to record how peoplelooked. Today, we use cameras to do this, but it doesn’t mean that there are no newpaintings and painters.

Mount Everest is in the Himalayas, and it’s part of

Mount Everest, but I haven’t climbed it. I Three

years ago, I went trekking in Nepal and we went to

The people in Nepal were very friendly and I’d like

New Zealand is one of my favourite countries, and

The CamelWhat is special about the camel?

Well, first of all, camels have

humps. Some of them have one

hump and some have two. The

Arabian one-humped camel came

originally from the Middle East;

the two-humped Bactrian camel

was originally from the dry parts

of Asia. Camels are the largest

animals in the desert. Camels are

common in zoos around the

world, but today they’re rare in

the wild. They are between 2.25

and 3.45 metres long, and they

are up to 2.1 metres tall. Arabian

camels have longer legs, but they

aren’t as heavy as Bactrian

camels.

Camels have got thick fur. This

protects them against the hot

days and cold nights of the

desert. Their huge feet, with only

two toes, are ideal for walking on

sand, and they can close their

noses when they are in a

sandstorm.

There isn’t a lot of water in the

desert, so how do camels

survive? Camels have a solution

for this problem. They don’t need

to drink for long periods of time

because they can store water in

their humps. They just drink a lot

before a long journey! In fact,

camels can drink more than 50

litres of water in a short time.

They store this water, and their

food, in their humps.
