Welcome to Oxford PlayhouseMarch to August 2015

It might take a little imagination in mid-February (when I’m writing this) to conjure up thoughts of glorious midsummer, but Oxford Playhouse starts 2015 in a sunny mood.

Both Woman in Black and Jeeves and Wooster broke box office records, following on from our 5-star panto Beauty and the Beast which was seen by 36,000 people. Should anyone need an incentive to read on and get booking, the long queues for returns at the Ticket Office might convince them to plan ahead…

Spring and Summer bring a wonderful array of first-class entertainment, both on the mainstage and around the corner at the bijou Burton-Taylor Studio. Shakespeare, Stoppard, Miller, Ayckbourn – all the greats are on offer at OP!

I’m especially looking forward to seeing our Resident Company Shared Experience return to the Playhouse stage with Mermaid; a modern adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale which will feature a choir of young women recruited locally - a brilliant chance for participation and self-discovery for young people.

It is opportunities like these, that introduce theatre to new audiences, that might not otherwise be possible without public funding. Some people might think busy theatres like OP could manage without subsidy – after all, our Arts Council grant represents less than 10% of our turnover. Yet that relatively small amount helps us keep prices as low as we can, bring in new talent for old and new audiences to enjoy, and work with young people, schools and children. It’s the difference between the kind of theatre, and world, I want to see and one that knows ‘the price of everything and the value of nothing.’

Arts Council England has launched a campaign, #culturematters, to highlight the contribution the arts make to our national economy, employment, and well-being. Creative industries are the UK’s fastest-growing sector, worth £71.4bn a year and making up 5.6% of the workforce, according to a recent report by from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The theatre industry is also promoting #mytheatrematters to highlight the contribution venues make to local communities throughout the UK.

I know many people value the Playhouse and the many other great cultural organisations we all enjoy in Oxford. Now is the time to let your MP, councillors and other representatives know how much these cultural institutions matter.

I look forward to seeing you at the theatre this summer, rain or shine.

OPINION A new production from Cheek by Jowl is not to be missed so be sure to catch this one on its only UK date outside London. Don’t let the fact that it’s in Russian put you off, Donnellan and Ormerod create shows so rich in imagery that they transcend language.

Katy SnellingProgrammer

By William ShakespeareDirected by Declan DonnellanDesigned by Nick Ormerod Performed in Russian with English surtitles

Deep within the heart of the city lies an underworld of chaotic convents, prisons and brothels, kept hidden by a corrupt authority. As virtue and vice blur dangerously together, Shakespeare dissects the nature of government, love, and justice with humour and insight.

Following its scorching productions of ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore, Ubu Roi and The Tempest, Cheek by Jowl returns with another thrilling reinvention of a classic. Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure is reimagined in a razor-sharp modern production by a critically- acclaimed company of Russian artists, performing in their native tongue.

Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod’s Cheek by Jowl is internationally renowned for its dynamic and beautiful style, with dramatic staging, poetic storytelling and world class actors. In Russia, this production of Measure for Measure was described as “compelling”, “stunning” and “breathtaking” and has been nominated for five Golden Mask Awards, including Best Director and Best Male Performance.

Written by Olivier and Tony Award-winning playwright Alan Ayckbourn, Living Together follows the antics of Norman, a romantic with questionable intentions. During a family weekend at an old country house, Norman attempts to woo his wife’s sister, Annie. But her would-be boyfriend and interfering siblings, not to mention Norman’s own wife, are just some of the obstacles that stand in his way.

Forming part of The Norman Conquests trilogy, widely considered to be one of Ayckbourn’s best works, Living Together plays out the rising tension between family members, and the hilarious chaos that ensues from their misguided attempts at reconciliation.

In an entertaining, bittersweet production, University of Oxford students perform this popular piece by one of the nation’s most prolific playwrights.

Shared Experience and Nottingham Playhouse presents

Oxford Playhouse is delighted to welcome back its Resident Company, Shared Experience, with a bold reimagining of Hans Christian Andersen’s tale of love, loss and desire.

On her 16th birthday, a mermaid rises up to the surface, leaving her childhood behind forever when she falls in love with a mortal prince. She knows that she can no longer live at the bottom of the ocean, but must she destroy herself in order to be loved?

Shared Experience is renowned for its thrilling adaptations of literary classics. Plundering this haunting tale for its dark, erotic, mythic power, writer and director Polly Teale (Mary Shelley, Brontë) transports the story to a contemporary setting in this spellbinding new production.

Using a choir of local young women to create an unearthly musical landscape, Shared Experience conjures the magical world of mermaids.

Described by the Times as a “choreographer for whom every dance is a love affair with his chosen music”, Richard Alston brings his acclaimed company back to the Playhouse with a stunning mixed bill.

Alston’s superbly skilled choreography combines three pieces of music by Benjamin Britten and three very different poets.

Rejoice in the Lamb is danced to Britten’s joyous setting of the fervent words of Christopher Smart. Hölderlin Fragments is inspired by Friedrich Hölderlin’s enigmatic lyrics, and Illuminations paints a vivid picture of the wild young genius and misfit Arthur Rimbaud.

The bill is concluded with Associate Choreographer Martin Lawrance’s latest piece, Burning, which is as passionate and turbulent as its music, the Dante Sonata of Franz Liszt, played live on stage.

It’s possibly one of the most gorgeous pieces he’s made…HHHH Guardian

Bernard Shaw’s period drama is full of insight and humane understanding, ranking as one of his masterpieces alongside Pygmalion and Saint Joan. In this sumptuous production, Sue Holderness (Only Fools and Horses, The Green Green Grass) stars as Mrs Warren alongside Christopher Timothy (All Creatures Great and Small, Doctors, Dial M for Murder).

Claudio loves Hero and Hero loves Claudio and nothing seems capable of keeping them apart. Benedick loves Beatrice and Beatrice loves Benedick, but (because neither will admit it) nothing seems capable of bringing them together. Only the intrigues of a resentful prince can force Benedick to question his loyalty and prove where his love lies. Driven along by a romance all the more charming for being in denial, Much Ado About Nothing is a miracle of comic and dramatic suspense and gives us, in the bantering Beatrice and Benedick, one of Shakespeare’s wittiest and most endearing pairs of lovers.

Firmly established as one of Oxford’s cultural highlights, Oxford Playhouse and the Bodleian Library are delighted to welcome back the Globe Theatre on Tour to perform Much Ado About Nothing in the stunning outdoor setting of the Old Schools Quadrangle.

The Mousetrap is famous around the world for being the longest running production in the history of British theatre. Don’t miss this legendary West End show at the Playhouse for one week only.

The scene is set when a group of people gathered in a country house and cut off by the snow discover, to their horror, that there is a murderer in their midst. Who can it be? One by one the suspicious characters reveal their sordid pasts until, at the last, nerve-shredding moment, the identity and the motive are finally revealed.

In her own inimitable style, Dame Agatha Christie creates an atmosphere of shuddering suspense and a brilliantly intricate plot where murder lurks around every corner.

Not to be missed.

Meeting its audience on the bleachers, Hoke’s Bluff is a tale of high school sport, inspiring locker room speeches and an underdog’s story that’s been told a million times before. With a nostalgic yearning for a world that never really existed, Action Hero shift the clichéd narratives of American teen movies to expose what it means to be a winner… on the inside.

With a heartfelt rendition of these schmaltzy, hackneyed tales, they gently reveal both the ambient violence and the genuine beauty that hide within these seemingly innocuous stories.

What was Samuel Beckett really like? This stage version of Mora Grey’s novel gives us a fascinating glimpse of the man behind the writing.

It’s opening night for the latest production of Beckett’s acclaimed play, Krapp’s Last Tape. But Beckett is troubled and his looming presence disturbs the director, designer, wardrobe mistress, flyman and the actor.

On the way to her Grandmother’s house through a forest filled with howling wolves, Little Red Riding Hood must stay alert to the danger surrounding her. Straying from the path, our feisty heroine has to pit her wits against the hungry wolf.

We all think we know the tale of Red Riding Hood, but stay alert... events may not unravel as you’d expect.

Written by Tim Kane, this production brings a fresh twist to a well-loved tale – a feast of visual innovation and extraordinary puppet theatre with original music and song by Ben Glasstone.

How can you ‘be yourself’ when you haven’t had any time to discover who you are? Each moment is monitored; every fashion faux-pas photographed, each word saved and every mistake becomes an “epic fail”. Join our 11|15 Young Company as they explore what it means to grow up under constant pressure to prove that you’re living the life everyone else only wishes they were.

This summer, our 16|25 Young Company (recently expanded from 16|22) will be developing short scripts inspired by what happens to our minds and imaginations when physical or social constraints are imposed upon us. These are stories of oppression and rebellion – tales of minds that remain unbowed and imaginations that soar even when the body is chained. These brave new plays are sure to be as entertaining as they are fascinating. A special chance to catch brand new work from the next generation of theatre-makers.

1980. Wimbledon. An epic rivalry comes to a head. A six- year old boy watches and learns.

Bjorn Borg epitomised tennis cool. He was everything Jamie wanted to be. Then John McEnroe came along and Jamie was beaten, along with Borg. Thirty years of torment and self-questioning later, Jamie is ready to face his greatest opponent.

Shortlisted for a Total Theatre Award, Beating McEnroe is about rivalry, love, being a younger brother and a bad loser.

As funny as the best comedy, super-theatrical & entirely unlike anything else.Guardian

Enjoy interesting conversation and a sandwich lunch before taking in the matinee performance. New Spotlighters are always welcome, why not bring a friend?

Oxford Playhouse welcomes young people throughout the year on work experience placements. Students have the opportunity to try their hand in the Ticket Office, Front of House, venture backstage, speak with industry professionals and create resources for the theatre that will be used by our audiences. It is important to note that work experience is administration and management focused. There is no opportunity for performance.

Playwriting workshops aimed at school years 5 and 6, Primary Playmaker helps children to create short plays that will be performed in a week-long festival of theatre presented by Oxford Playhouse Young Companies in 2016.

Led by Renata Allen.

These weekly workshops are for young writers keen to explore the skills required to write a short play.

Sessions begin in September and a selection of the finished plays will be performed by Oxford Playhouse 16|25 Young Company in June 2016. The Young Playmakers will work with a director to understand the process of bringing their words to life.

Led by John Retallack and Renata Allen.

New and emerging playwrights are invited to submit their work to be considered for a place on the Oxford Playhouse Writers on Attachment Programme – Playhouse Playmaker.

Beginning in October, selected writers will be offered six Saturday workshops covering everything from developing an idea to getting it staged with group and individual mentoring from John Retallack.

Try an open access taster session on Sat 2 May for £10. Book via the Ticket Office.

Access FacilitiesOxford Playhouse offers a range of facilities for audience members with access requirements, including level access to the auditorium, low level counters at the Ticket Office and bar, wheelchair spaces (stalls: end of rows E & L and centre of row T), audio described, captioned and signed performances. Look out for these symbols on the show pages of this Guide.

Captioned and signed performances are excellent for people who are deaf, deafened and hard of hearing. During a signed performance an interpreter stands at the side of the stage. Captioned performances may also be of interest for those whose first language isn’t English and for anyone who finds it helpful to follow the text during a show.

Audio described performances are designed for blind or partially sighted audience members. Via headphones, a live narrator describes the action in the pauses between the onstage dialogue. Touch tours accompany audio described performances.

The auditorium has a Sennheiser infrared system for audience members who are hard of hearing. Please ask the Ticket Office at the time of booking to advise you on the best places to sit for using the Sennheiser headsets within the auditorium. Relaxed performances are aimed at anyone who would benefit from a laid back environment including people with an Autistic Spectrum Condition, a learning disability or very young children who might be afraid of the dark. The atmosphere in the auditorium will be relaxed with the house lights partially on. Audience members will be free to come and go as they please throughout the show and make noise if they want to.

Reserve your access tickets by emailing [email protected] or calling the Ticket Office on 01865 305305.
