This warranty is for one year from the date of purchase, and includes only private householdvacuum cleaner use. During the warranty year, when this vacuum cleaner is operated andmaintained according to the owner's manual instructions, Sears will repair any defects inmaterial or workmanship free of charge.

This warranty excludes vacuum cleaner bags, belts, light bulbs, and filters, which areexpendable parts and become worn during normal use.

Always change the dust bag after vacu-uming carpet cleaners or freshener, pow-ders, and fine dust. These products clo(the bag, reduce airflow and can cause thebag to burst, Failure to change the bagpromptly could cause permanent damageto the cleaner.

Do not use the vacuum cleaner to pick upsharp hard objects,small toys, pins,paperclips, etc. They may damagethe cleanerordustbag.

Before assembling your vacuum cleaner, besure you have all the parts as shown inPARTS AND FEATURES.

Attach stretch hoseend to nozzle asshown.

HANDLE ASSEMBLYRemove the screw located just below thetop edge of the back of the vacuum cleaner.

Position the handle as shown in the illustra-tion below.

Slide the handle into the opening at the topof the vacuum cleaner.

Begin to tighten the screw with your fingers.It may be necessary to adjust the handleslightly. Using a screwdriver, tighten thescrew.

Do not overtighten.

Overtightening could strip thescrew holes.

CORD ASSEMBLYMake sure the quick release upper cordI-3ookis in the upright position. Removethe wire tie from the power cord.

Lock the power cordinto the locking notchbase by pressing itinto the quick releaseupper cord hook asshown. This helpskeep the power cordout from under the

vacuum cleaner agi-tator.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

WARNING• To reduce the risk of electric shock,this vacuum cleaner has a polarizedplug (one blade is wider than theother).• The plug will fit in a polarized outletonly one way. If the plug does not fitfully in the outlet, reverse the plug. Ifit still does not fit, contact a qualifiedtechnician to install the proper outlet.Do not change the plug in any way.

2. Detach the power cord plug from thepower cord and pull the cord off the quickrelease upper cord hook. Be sure the powercord is still locked into the locking notch ofthe upper cord hook.

3. Be sure the vacuum cleaner has baginstalled. See DUST BAG REPLACEMENT.

4. Plug the polarized power cord into a 120Volt outlet located near the floor.

5. To replace cord, turn upper hook counter-clockwise pointing up, then wrap cord.

Toselecta pile heightsetting:

Turnoffvacuumcleaner. Select a pile heightsetting by tilting the vacuum cleaner backuntil front wheels are lifted slightly off thefloor.

Slide the adjustment lever to the correctsetting.

There are tour (4) pile height settings on thevacuum cleaner. Use the LOW setting formost low-pile carpets and bare floorcleaning (with agitator OFF), and the HIGHsetting for high-pile carpets like shag carpet,scatter rugs, etc. Use the other settings asneeded for carpet heights in-between lowand high pile.

CAUTION

Do not allow vacuum cleaner to

remain in one spot for any lengthof time when the agitator is turn-ing. Damage to carpet may occur.

SOME MODELS

Bare floor setting: Slide the carpet/barefloor selector all the way back and downtoward the bottom of the nozzle until it

locks into place.

In this position the brush assembly doesnot revolve. This setting should be usedfor cleaning hardwood and tile floors andwhen any attachments (tools) areused.

Carpet setting: Slide the selector all theway forward and up to the carpetposition.

In this position the brush assembly willturn. When carpets are being cleaned theselector should be in this position.

Attention: Refer to your carpet manufac-turers cleaning recommendations. Somemore delicate carpets may require thatthey be vacuumed with the agitator turnedoff, to prevent carpet damage.

! CAUTIONDo not allow vacuum cleaner toremain in one spot for any lengthof time when the agitator is turn-ing. Damage to carpet may occur.

Note: For longer belt life, turn the vacuumcleaner off before moving selector, other-wise make sure the selector is pushedfully and quickly as possible to thedesired position. Failure to do so cancause the belt to rub on the selector shaft

and may result in the belt becoming hotand creating a burning rubber smell.

OFF - Turns OFF the vacuum (suction)motor.

ON - Turns ON the vacuum motor to HIGH

suction level for cleaning of most carpetsand rugs. In order to get MEDIUM andLOW suction levels for cleaning, press theSUCTION button to cycle the vacuummotor through MEDIUM, LOW, and HIGHsuction levels respectively.

SUCTION - Changes the suction level ofthe vacuum cleaner motor. If the unit isOFF, pressing the SUCTION button turnsON the vacuum cleaner motor to HIGH

suction level for cleaning of most carpets,

rugs, and fabrics, if the unit is ON, press-ing the SUCTION button cycles the vacu-um cteaner motor through suction levels.

Place the carpeVbare floor selector in thebare floor setting by rotating the selectorback and down to the bare floor setting.See CARPET/BARE FLOOR SELEC-TOR section.

When returning the bare floor selector tothe carpet setting, use caution as theselector can move quickly to that set-ting due to tension created by the belt.

Remove the tower end of the stretch hose

from the cleaner by grasping the hosecollar, twisting and pulling straight out.The attachments can now be added tothe hose.

Note: The motor protector may openwhen using attachments or when cleaningnew carpet, due to reduced airflowcaused by the attachments themselves orby new carpet lint filling the bag quickly.See theTROUBLESHOOTING section.

Controldraperies, small S#derugs with low pileand otherdelicate items,twist the suctioncontrol stide to

the openposition. This slide is located on thetelescopic wand, close to the hose.This will reduce suction for ease of cleaning.

Note: Return suction control slide to the

closed position for normal cleaning.

When using attachments, be careful notto overextend the stretch hose when

reaching. Trying to reach beyond thehose stretch capability could cause thevacuum cleaner to tip over, Make sure thecarpet/bare floor selector is in the barefloor position. Damage to the floor sur-face may occur if the carpet setting isused.

Carpet edges.Guide either side or the front of the noz-zle along a baseboard. The full lengthbrushes help remove dirt at carpet edges.

Stairs.

Put handle in full upright position. Slide thecarpet/bare floor selector all the way backand down toward the bottom of the nozzleuntil it locks into place. Use the crevice toolor fabric brush or Handi-Mate Jr.® when

vacuum cleaner is running. Pressing theSUCTION button will cycle the vacuummotor through HIGH, MEDIUM and LOWsuction levels.

MOTOR PROTECTIONSYSTEM

This vacuum cleaner is also equipped witha motor protector by-pass valve whichautomatically opens to provide cooling airto the motor when a clog prevents thenormal flow of air to the motor, if the by-pass valve opens to prevent motoroverheating and possible damage to thevacuum cleaner, you will notice a changeof sound as air rushes through the valveopening.

DIRT SENSORThe electronic dirt sensor is a featurewhich will detect particles as they passthrough the vacuum cleaner.

The dirt sensor indicator is located on thefront of the switch cover.

The red light indicates dirt is being pickedup by the cleaner.

OPERATION

As you vacuum, the red indicator light willcome on and stay on as long as thesensor detects a high concentration ofparticles passing through the vacuumcleaner.

No light indicates that most of thecleaning is complete.

TO CLEAN DIRT SENSOR OPTICS

The dirt sensor optics consist Of two opticcells located inside the bag holder.Occasionally, it may become necessary toclean the two optic cells to assuremaximum performance. It isrecommended the optic cells be cleaned:

•When the red light stays oncontinuously.

•When dirt or dust adheres to theoptic cells.

•Whenever the dust bag is changed.

To clean the sensor, wipe the optic cellswith a soft, dry cloth. Never use cleanersor liquids as they can help speed therecoating of the optic cells and make itnecessary to clean them much soonerthan normal. The dirt sensor area can bereached by removing the dust cover andthe dust bag.

Always follow all safety precautions whencleaning and servicing the vacuumcleaner.

Gather the cord and wrap it looselyaround the upper and lower cord hooks.

Store the vacu-um cleaner in adry, indoor area,on the floor withthe handlelocked in the

uprightposition.

or damage.

Clean exterior using a clean, soft cloth that hasbeen dipped in a solution of mild liquid deter-gent and water, then wrung dry. Wipe dry aftercleaning.

To reduce static electricity and dust build-up,wipe outer surface of vacuum cleaner andattachments.

Wash attachments in warm soapy water, rinseand air dry. Do not clean in dishwasher.

Do not use attachments if they arewet. Attachments used in dirtyareas, such as under a refrigerator,should not be used on other

surfaces until they are washed. Theycould leave marks.

The light bulb socket assembly does nothave to be removed. Lay the agitatorcover over to the side out of the way.

Position hands on the agitator. If the beltis still attached to the agitator, there willbe tension on the agitator. Carefully liftthe right end of the agitator and then theleft end.

Note: It may be necessary to pull theedge of the furniture guard out of the wayto allow the ends of the agitator to beremoved easily.

Remove the belt from the motor driveshaft.

If the vacuum cleaner does not seem tohave adequate suction, first check if thedust bag is full or if a filter is clogged. SeeDUST BAG REPLACEMENT and FIL-TER REPLACEMENT.

If the bag and filter areas are free ofclogs, check the hose area. Remove thelower end of the stretch hose from the

cleaner by grasping the hose collar, twist-ing, and pulling straightout.

Plug in the vacuumcleaner and turn it 4on. Stretch

the hose to Stretchmaximum length HoseInand then allow andOutthe hose to return to itsnatural length.

Turn the unit off and unplugthe unit.

Visually inspect the hose and the basearea into which the hose is inserted.

Remove any visible clog.

Re-insert the hose into the opening onthe lower body from which it wasremoved. Press firmly to assure connec-tion.

If the bag and filter areas and the hoseareas are free of clogs, check the floornozzle area. To check this area, see thesection on BELT REPLACEMENT ANDAGITATOR CLEANING.
