This control gives you the flexibility tosave water when washing small loads,

Your washer lets you select a watersetting based on the size of your washload.

• For normal loads, start with theMEDIUM LOAD Setting. Adjust up ordown depending on your load. Clothesshould move freely and roll toward theagitator.

Washers with a variableWater Level Control:

• The variable control lets you select awater level anywhere from SMALLLOAD to LARGE LOAD.

• To change to a higher water levelsetting after the washer has started toagitate, turn the knob to RESET, thento the desired new setting.

MEDIUMLOAD

Washers with 4-position or S-positionWater Level Control:

• To change to a higher water levelsetting after the washer has started toagitate, turn the knob to the desired newsetting.

MEDIUM

LOAD

WATER TEMPERATURE CONTROLYour washer lets you select a wash andrinse water temperature setting based onthe type of load you are washing.

• Using warm rinse water will leave loadsdryer after the spin cycle than if you usecold rinse water. However, warm rinsesmay increase wrinkling when line drying.

• In cold climates, warm rinse water alsoprovides a more comfortable tempera-ture for handling the wash load. Warmrinse is controlled to 75°F (24°C).

SELECTING WATER TEMPERATURES

Wash WaterTemperature Suggested Fabrics Comments

HOT • Work clothes • Best cleaning for heavily soiIed items111°F (44°C) • Sturdy whites/ • Removes oils, perspiration, greasy soilsor above colorfast pasteis and stains

• Diapers • Prevents graying or yellowing

WARM • Dark/non-colorfast colors • Best for moderately soiled to lightly soiled items90°-110°F • Permanent press items • Safe for most fabnc finishes(32°-43°C) • Nylon, polyester, acrylics, • Less fading and dye bleeding

silks, woolens • Reduces wrinkling• Knits/delicate fabrics

COLD* • Extra-sensitive colors • Best for very lightly soiled items70°-90°F • Non-colorfast items • Saves hot water(21°-32°C) • Hand washables

•In wash water tern )eratures coIder than 70°F (21°C), detergents do not dissolve well Also, soilsmay be difficult to remove and some fabrics may retain wear wrinkles and have increased pilling- the formation of small fint-like balls on the surface of garments. Pilling is the natural result ofwearing and washing of garments.

AUTOMATIC TEMPERATURECONTROL (ATC)

ATC takes away the worry ofundissolved detergent and ensuresconsistent cleaning results fromseason to season with warm andcold washes.

ATC electronically senses and maintainsa uniform water temperature byregulating incoming hot and cold water.

• Even in cold wash, some

warm water is let into the i w_'_i_o,c°NT"oLwasher to maintain atemperature minimum of _mCOLD

70°F (21°C). In very cold _=COLD 70'

water, detergent may not ) COLDdissolve and clothes willnot be cleaned completely. = WARM_00

• Warm wash is regulatedat approximately 100°F(38°C). ATC does not control the hotwash water temperature.

• Warm rinse is regulated atapproximately 75°F (24°C) for all warmrinse settings. This may be a coolerwarm rinse than what you are used to,but it saves energy and still gives youproper rinsing and a load that iscomfortable to remove.

SPEEDS DESCRIPTIONS

This section illustrates and describesthe wash/spin speeds you can selectwith the SPEEDS Control. Each speedsetting is designed for different typesof fabrics and soil levels.

HANDWASH PLUS FINE DELICATESUse this speed setting for hand washableand special-care items. Garments arelabeled "Hand Wash" because:

• The fiber or construction may besensitive to agitation.

• The fabric contains sensitive dyesthat may bleed.

The wash action mirrors the way youwould treat hand washable garments in asink. It does this by repeating periods of

extra-slow speed agitation and soaking.Slow spin speeds help reduce wrinkling.Do not use this cycle for large items likeblankets.

NOTE: Some "Hand Wash" items, particularly wool, naturally shrink whenwashed. Keep this in mind when youpurchase items labeled "Hand Wash."Items that shrink should be dried flat.

When still wet, block these items bygently stretching to original measure-ments.

HANDWASH/CASUALUse this speed setting for lingerie andloosely knit items. Setting combinesextra-slow speed agitation for gentle soilremoval and slow spin speeds to reducewrinkling.

DELICATE

Use this speed setting for washableknit fabrics and permanent press fabrics.Setting combines slow speed agitationfor gentle soil removal and slow spin .....speeds to reduce wrinkling.

REGULARUse this speed setting for normally soiledcottons and linens. Setting combines slowspeed agitation and fast spin speeds toshorten drying time.

HEAVY DUTY

Use this speed setting for sturdy orheavily soiled loads. Setting combinesfast speed agitation and fast spin speeds.

The PERMANENT PRESS II Cycleincludes a load cooling processthat reduces wrinkling comparedto other cycles.

You can select up to 10 minutes ofwash time.

NOTE: When the timer reaches PAUSE,the washer will drain and pause for nomore than two minutes while some of thewash water is drained and replaced withrinse water.

ULTRA CLEAN

Use this cycle for most loads to getbetween 6 and 16 minutes of washtime.

PREWASHUse this cycle to get up to 4 minutesof agitation to help remove heavy soilsand stains that need pretreatment.PREWASH Cycle should be followedby an ULTRA CLEAN or PERMANENTPRESS II Cycle with additionaldetergent added.

SOAKSOAK Cycle features 4 minutes ofagitation followed by an unlimited soaktime to help remove heavy soils andstains that need pretreatment. You willneed to reset the washer to a SPIN

setting to remove water. SOAK Cycleshould be followed by an ULTRA CLEAN,PERMANENT PRESS II, or PREWASHCycle with additional detergent.

NOTE: We do not recommend hot waterfor soaking. It may set some stains.

SELF-CLEANING LINT FILTER TOTAL CARE TM AGITATOR

Lint is filtered from the load

automatically - there's nomessy cleanup.

Your washer features a self-cleaningfilter that traps lint from the water whilethe washer is washing and deep rinsingthe laundry. The trapped lint is flusheddown the drain automatically. You don'thave to clean the filter.

QUIET PAK TM II

The QUIET PAK TM II System is designedto reduce water sounds and ringingnoises. The cabinet is insulated withthree sound-dampening materials forsuperior vibration and sound-dampeningcharacteristics.

Kenmore's exclusive TOTAL CARE TM

Agitator has triple action agitation togive you the most flexible fabric carefor even your largest loads.

The TOTAL CARE TM Agitator moves inthree directions, dependingon load size, to ensure prop-er cleaning. The best clean-ing action in your washertakes place at the bottomwhere the agitator vanesmove back and forth to flexthe fabric, loosening thesoil.

The upper portion of theagitator features specialvanes that push theclothes down in a spiralingpattern to where the cleaning action is,displacing the clothes that are there witha "roll-over" motion.

For your largest loads, the TOTAL CARE TM

Agitator offers a load-sensing feature thatactually senses when you are washing avery large load and responds with a third, vertical motion that senses the load sizeand guides items to the bottom.

UNDERSTANDING NORMALWASHER SOUNDS

Your new washer may make soundsthat your old one didn't. Because thesounds are unfamiliar, you may beconcerned about them.

The following describes some of thenormal sounds you may hear and whatcauses them.

During WashingWhen you select a small load size settingfor a small wash load, your washer has alower water level. With this lower waterlevel, you may hear a clicking sound fromthe upper portion of the agitator.

During DrainThe rate that water is drained from yourwasher depends on your installation. Ifwater is drained quickly from the washer, you may hear air being pulled throughthe pump. This happens during the endof draining.

After Drain and Before SpinWhen the cycle changes from drainingto spinning, you may hear a noise as thegearcase shifts.

USING THE LIQUID CHLORINEBLEACH DISPENSER

The liquid chlorine bleach dispenserautomatically dispenses bleach at theproper time in the cycle to ensure thecleanest and brightest loads.

Always measure liquid chlorinebleach. Use a measuring cup, do notguess. De net pour directly from bottle.Never use more than 1 cup (250 mL) fora full load. Use less with smaller loads.Fellow manufacturer's directions for safeuse. A cup with a pouring spout will helpyou avoid spilling.

After loading the washer, pour measuredliquid chlorine bleach carefully into thedispenser.

• Do not let bleach splash, drip, or rundown into washer basket. Undilutedbleach will damage any fabric it touches.

• Start the washer. Bleach will be

dispensed automatically after thedetergent has had time to work.

• Do not overfill. Look for the level

markings on the dispenser cover.Dispenser holds 1 cup (250 mL) ofliquid chlorine bleach.

NOTE: Do not use this dispenser to addpowdered chlorine or color-safe bleach toyour washer load. The dispenser is forliquid chlorine bleach only.

USING THE LIQUID FABRICSOFTENER DISPENSERAfter loading the washer, measure andadd the recommended amount of fabric

softener into the dispenser. Followmanufacturer's directions.

NOTE: Pouring too much fabric softenerinto the dispenser will cause the fabricsoftener to dispense instantly into theload due to siphoning action. This instant"dump" could damage fabrics and willmake it appear that your dispenser isnot working correctly.

• Add warm water to fill the dispenseruntil it reaches the bottom of theopening of the funnel-shaped portionof the dispenser.

• Fabric softener is dispensed into the firstdeep rinse water automatically.

NOTE: Fabric softeners are not com-patible with detergents. This dispensershould never be used in the PREWASHCycle since it would dispense fabricsoftener into a wash load that has notbeen rinsed. Undiluted fabric softenerspilled on fabric may result in spots thatlook like oil stains.

If you ever use your dispenser this wayby mistake, rewash the load with extradetergent to remove these deposits.

To Remove the Fabric SoftenerDispenser for Cleaning:

STEP 1. Pull up on the Fabric SoftenerDispenser to remove the dispenser fromthe agitator.

STEP 2. Grasp both ends of the dis-penser. Pull to separate.

=)

STEP 3. Remove internal holding cup.

STEP 4. Rinse all three parts withwarm water.

STEP 5. Place the holding cup in the topouter portion of the dispenser. ....STEP 6. Snap the bottom and the top ofthe Fabric Softener Dispenser together.

STEP 7. Replace the dispenser on theagitator; press firmly to snap into place.

PREPARING CLOTHESFOR WASHING

Follow these recommendationsto help you prolong the life ofyour garments.

• Close zippers, snaps, and hooks toavoid snagging other items. Removepins, buckles, and other hard objectsto avoid scratching the washer interior.Remove non-washable trim andornaments.

• Empty pockets and turn theminside out.

• Turn down cuffs, brush away lintand dirt.

• Turn synthetic knits inside out toavoid pilling.

• Tie strings and sashes so they willnot tangle.

• Mend tears, loose hems, and seams.

• Treat spots and stains.

• Stained or wet garments should bewashed promptly for best results.

SORTING

• Separate heavily soiled items from lightlysoiled ones, even if they would normallybe washed together. Separate lint givers(towels, chenille) from lint takers(corduroy, synthetics, permanent press). When possible, turn lint givers inside out.

• Separate dark colors from light colors, colorfast items from non-colorfast items.

• Sort by fabric and construction(sturdy cottons, knits, delicate items).

LOADING * Reduce wash time by using a lowerwater level setting, Loads with only afew small items need less wash time.

Proper loading of your washercontributes to proper cleaning andfabric care and reduces machinenoise,

• Drop items into washer loosely. Fill tothe top of the basket (top row of holes).Do not wrap items around the agitator.Items should move easily throughwash water for best cleaning andwrinkle-free results. Items should sinkand reappear later.

• Load washer properly and selectcorrect water level setting. Overloadingor packing the machine, and selecting asetting too small for the wash load can:

- cause poor cleaning

- increase wrinkling- create excessive lint

- wear out items faster(because of pilling)

• Load by the amount of space itemstake up, not by their weight.

• Mix large and small items in each load.Load evenly to maintain washerbalance. An off-balance load can makethe washer vibrate during spin.

• Use a higher water level setting toreduce wrinkling with permanent pressclothes and some synthetic knits. Theseitems should have more room to movein the water than heavy items (towels, jeans).

Loading Suggestions

For these suggested full-sized loads, set the WATER LEVEL selector to thehighest water level setting.

CLEANING YOUR WASHER

Exterior

Wipe up detergent, bleach, and otherspills with a soft, damp cloth or spongeas they occur. Occasionally wipe theoutside of the washer to keep it lookinglike new.

Do not put sharp or metal objects in yourwasher. They can damage the finish.Check all pockets for pins, clips, money, bolts, nuts, etc. Do not lay these objectson your washer after emptying pockets.

Interior

Clean interior with 1 cup (250 mL) ofchlorine bleach mixed with 2 cups(500 mL) of detergent. Run washerthrough a complete cycle using hot water.Repeat process if necessary.

NOTE: Remove hard water deposits usingonly cleaners labeled as washer safe.

WATER INLET HOSES

Replace inlet hoses after five yearsof use to reduce the risk of hosefailure. Periodically inspect andreplace inlet hoses if bulges, kinks, cuts, wear or leaks are found, Whenreplacing your inlet hoses, mark thedate of replacement on the label witha permanent marker.

WINTER STORAGE ORMOVING CARE

Install and store your washer whereit will not freeze. Because some watermay stay in the hoses and pump, freezing can damage your washer. Ifstoring or moving your washer duringfreezing weather, winterize it.

To winterize washer:

1. Shut off both water faucets.

2. Disconnect and drain water inlet hoses.

3. Put 1 qt (1 L) of R.V.4ype antifreezein the basket,

4. Run washer on a SPIN setting forabout 30 seconds to mix the anti-freeze and water. Some of the mixturewill pump out while the washer spins.

5. Unplug the power supply cord.

To use washer again:

1. Flush water pipes and hoses.2. Reconnect water inlet hoses.

3. Turn on both water faucets.

4. Reconnect power supply cord,

5. Run the washer through a completecycle with 1 cup (250 mL) of detergentto clean out antifreeze.

NON-USE OR VACATION CARE

Operate your washer only when youare at home. If you will be on vacation ornot using your washer for an extendedperiod of time, you should:

• Unplug the power supply cord or turn offelectrical power to the washer.

• Turn off the water supply to the washer. This helps avoid accidental flooding(due to a water pressure surge) whileyou are away.
