Our GoalTo improve The economics, inTegriTy and pleasure of The sporT of Thoroughbred racing on behalf of all owners.

The summer festival of racing follows on from a highly successful Christmas at the Races. The increase in revenue from turnovers from this concept in particular, but also from efficiencies has seen the Racing Board lift the return to codes. The thoroughbred code has elected to pass the majority of this to Owners, via the re-introduction of free nomination fees. This is a very welcome relief to all, and effective from 1/03/13.

During a recently held Members Council Meeting with the NZTR Board, it was expressed by Council members that future relief be directed toward the higher stakes meetings, in particular the Premier stakes. Certainly any increases will relieve the financial pressure on all code participants.

The financial pressures are made all the more serious by the amount of betting being placed through offshore agencies. Money invested with them lessens the return to the TAB. The figures bandied are many and varied. The fact of the matter is however, that for every dollar invested in New Zealand TAB’s, approximately 20% is the return to the TAB, who after costs, allocate funds to respective codes. Our code receives approximately fifty four percent as our share of this. It would be fair to say that three years ago Andrew Brown, the then CEO of the Racing Board, believed the figure was sixty million per annum, in all likelihood, now closer to double that. Whatever the figure, the only way to capture this is by legislation. We need the political foresight of all parties, to see that these monies must be used to foster, and promote New Zealand Racing Codes. It is a two way street, don’t forget our fields are also used to collect revenues around the world. I believe we do have a copyright to this information. The sooner that these revenue streams are channelled into our returns and adding value to our product the better.

All the best in racing, Sydney is almost upon us and the Derby and Oaks will be run by the time this reaches your letterbox.

Regards, Neil.

Nztr Media release: removal of Nomination Fees to save Owners $1.2 million per yearThe Board of New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) has removed the $50 (excluding GST) nomination fee from all races below rating 75 from 1 March 2013. There will be no nomination or acceptance fees for horses that nominate, accept and start in all maiden, rating 65, non-black-type two-year-old, three-year-old, four-year-old, and special conditions races.

NZTR Chairman, Matthew Goodson, stated: “Removing nomination fees from lower tier races will provide direct savings of more than $1.2 million to Owners each year.”

“This decision follows the New Zealand Racing Board’s (NZRB) very welcome announcement of an increase in its forecast profit for FY13 and a projected increase in distributions to the three Racing Codes of $135 million (from $134 million), and continues our phased new structure of racing and prizemoney, which we started in March 2012, designed to maximize field sizes for domestic and international wagering across the week, and to encourage ownership.”

Neil Oldfield, President of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Racehorse Owners Federation

$57.50 (including GST) non-acceptance fee and a scratching fee equivalent to 0.75% (plus GST) of the total prizemoney for that class of race, plus a rider’s engagement fee of $57.50 (including GST) when the rider has been declared for a horse, which is subsequently scratched, provided that the rider is not subsequently declared for another horse in the same race.

(NZTROF) expressed his delight and support, on behalf of owners, for this initiative: “The NZTR Board must be congratulated for following through on their stated intent to remove nomination fees for these races and to reduce owners costs, and the NZRB Board for increasing its profitability and pay-out to the industry.”

“New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing has delivered on its aim, set out in its 2013-15 Business Plan, to reduce owner costs by supporting some elements of free racing.”

The only fees payable for maiden, rating 65 and non-black-type two-year-old, three-year-old, four-year-old, and special conditions races are as follows:

$57.50 (including GST) non-acceptance fee when a nominated horse does not accept for the race;

$57.50 (including GST) non-acceptance fee and a scratching fee equivalent to 0.75% (plus GST) of the total prizemoney for that class of race when a horse accepts but scratches before declaration of the rider;

Obituary

Member – roy robinsonDied 26 January 2013 Jenny cowan

Many members were present to farewell Waikato racing legend, Roy Robinson at Te Rapa Racecourse on 31 January. It was a fitting sendoff for Roy. Folk who knew him well came from afar and approximately 400 were present to celebrate his life. Roy was 82.

Roy was a true-blue everything, bred and born and died on the Robinson property in Matangi, just outside Hamilton. (His father possibly the same) So he started his lifetime love around horses there and to the very end was enjoying his favourite interest, favourite TV channel, favourite chair, favourite tipple and favorite company, wife Colleen. He died peacefully watching Trackside at home.

Roy was a longtime member of Waikato Owners’ and we offer our respects, and condolences to Colleen and family.

We hope there are more than one like him come along to fill his shoes in the racing industry.

Many anecdotes were passed around, as his life after business was full of fun and humour.

Roy and his good mate, Eric Davies, are well remembered for their help at the Waikato Racing Club golf tournaments. They often dressed up and followed each hole offering betting odds on various players. Lesser golfers, and bashers, were a big temptation, to aid the finances of the day.

Their ammunition to just disturb a little the accuracy of players, consisted of firecrackers, duck callers, a school bell, and field glasses for surety in the distance shots.

There are a lot of obituaries in this issue and that is the way life happens sometimes in a community such as racing. Our losses come in groups.

Ours is a “grass roots up” publication and we need to recognise these passings.

We roll into Autumn looking back at what seems to have been a summer of wall to wall racing. The field sizes have come down markedly, but a lot of that is due to the hard tracks brought about by an enduring drought. Good horse people are protecting our assets. Like many others I am waiting for our 2yo to trial. But I have lost 2 good horses to tendon injuries in the past and know now it is best to be patient.

The cover this month is of Ruud Awakening and we have a centre spread of the very successful (member) Albert Bosma and by extension, the Go Racing syndicates.

We welcome IRT to our advertisers. They are of course the international airfreight company who airfreight animals around the globe. Many of you will know the NZ director, the experienced and popular David Cole.

JLT are advising owners to insure the fetus as those examination dates come around. Give Luci’ Laxon a call and insure your hopes and dreams. Remember to say you are an Owners association member as our Federation gets a little help from that.

We are very happy to tell you about the amazing Catwalk planned Big Ride to Katmandu. They will need sponsors too and if you can help contact Emma Lowes at [email protected]

Faith Taylor who has sponsored the medical support for this adventure is the Matriarch of the historic and highly successful Trelawney Stud (Ocean Park!).

Faith is so deserving of a stand alone profile story and we hope to do that in time

Our expert farrier Rob Pinkney returns with a comprehensive article on shoeing hind feet of horses. We have put on our site www.racehorseowner.co.nz a link to a video which demonstrates correct practices. Go to our homepage and open NEWS and there it is.

Rob has done sterling work in getting the material to us. He has done this just for the welfare of the horse. We applaud him for that.

Do you know what a Jennet is? No? Well if you read the story about ‘Half Assed Acres’ Homer you will. His Mum is one!

Roy’s real racing world as amateur rider, OWNER and trainer peaked when Van der Hum won the Melbourne Cup. Then there was Bardall, Piko , Senor, Princess Eulogy, and currently, Ted’ll do, as well as many other good horses who raced the length and breadth of the country.

Roy held many, and most, positions in racing and with the late Ken Browne, supported a young George Simon in his foray into race calling.

With brother Leo in a training partnership, they trained more than 880 winners.

harvey Wadham obituary

Ken cramer roberts

The Counties Racing Club and the racing fraternity lost the services of a good man with the passing of Harvey Wadham. His funeral service was held at Pukekohe Park on Friday, 22 February.

Harvey was a popular trainer for many owners and small syndicates. The brilliant Debs Mate ridden by Debbie Healey (formerly Stockwell) made a name for the team.

Harvey was a Director of Counties Racing Club and had a big involvement in the construction of the all weather track and the maintenance of the other tracks.

Jackie his wife has long experience in thoroughbred management (also secretary of the Franklin Show) and will continue to train for the stable clients.

We will all miss Harvey and Owners send their condolences to Jackie and daughters Juliet and Leanne.

Its been a cracking summer of racing in the north headlined by the GO RACING Almighty Dawn Syndicates filly Ruud Awakening comprehensive win in the NZ Bloodstock Karaka Million. That was a little scoop for us as we had written her up in the previous issue. But it wasn’t hard to predict how this race would pan out. She was clearly the fastest horse in the race and was ridden by Australasia’s top jockey Craig Williams.

Williams bounced her out from her mid field start position and set a strong pace.

Straightening up the chasers were flat out keeping in touch and only a few made ground. As such it was a very fair race and few owners could complain about the ‘run.’ I noticed a couple

We value and respect our long-term and long-time members and hope they enjoy and engage in our stories in the Bulletin. One of these is a well known name from near Te Awamutu, Andrew Kay, who lives at Kihikihi.

After a short phone call with names I recall dearly, I wanted to delve deeper into what is racing history.

Andrew, no longer races horses, but he spoke of Gene Tui, trained by Mark Martinovich, one of our characters in the jockeys room, the trainers room, or in a social room. Then there was Gilbert, trained by Mick Brindle and Kara trained by Wally Pratt. Andrew was closely connected with Wally and owner Buster Tims in the Tatua team.

Buster’s father, Martin Tims gave a free service to his stallion Sajakeda, to Leo Cowan and his

Roll on to the Auckland Cup. The Ellerlie track was an oasis of green a visual tribute to the irrigation and work of the track staff. Sangster in at a good weight was favourite and clearly the best stayer in the race and won with authority. One of his owners Matthew Fenwick is the offspring of Allan Fenwick NZTROF exec. Dare I say it Sangster looks like a great Melbourne Cup prospect come November.

Every year just before the end of daylight saving the Auckland Owners Association run a ‘Stud and Stable’ coach tour. brother Ron, the issue was subsequently named Nikeda. Martin’s reason for the gift was ‘young blokes like you should be in racing.’ Both were under 30yrs at the time.

Nikeda only had 4 races. He won the first on a Friday and the 2nd on the following day, both at Whangarei.

At Wanganui, 2 weeks later, he got left 10 lengths and won and at his 4th start got left 10 lengths again, and ran second, beaten by a nose, in the Wanganui Guineas. He had never started behind a ‘strand barrier’ which Wanganui used until the invention of gate openers on stalls became common practice.

A week later Nikeda broke his shoulder while working on the plough on what is now the Cambridge Trotting Track. These memories seem like yesterday.

of eye catchers that had 3yo stamped on them and the owners of all the runners have a lot to look forward to.

The Derby was taken out by the favourite, the filly Habibi in a strong staying performance. The race was run in a good time due to the strong pace set by Bob Vance and Wayne Larsen’s Castlzeberg who bravely held on for 3rd. These two were split by Gary Harding’s Fix who made Habibi work hard for the win.

You may recall that I had given these fillies a wrap in the previous bulletin. I will get you the Habibi story for the next Bulletin when the Crofskey team come back down to earth.

Shirley died suddenly of cancer she was 87. You have to be very strong to die suddenly from that.

Unmarried and on her own Shirley was a stalwart of the Auckland racing scene being a member of the ARC, the AJC and the CRC. She was a habitual attendee of all. At her funeral CRC president Darrell Buttson and ARC past president Bill Gionotti spoke of what a stalwart she was and her famous irascibility.

Shirley and a group of her great woman friends, that included the late Peggy Nola and Joan Keven, crisscrossed the Auckland and Waikato regions for many years attending race meetings: until only Shirley was left. Then she went on her own. But she made other friends there and became part of another tight group.

There was kind of an imperfect trifecta when Shirley died.

(1) NZRB need to revisit their turnover forecasts as they have taken a hit

(2) Club secretaries realised that Shirley is no longer here to tune up their (perceived by her) miscreant staff and racegoers.

(3) Peter up at the Pearly Gates had an urgent staff meeting at Reception for this incoming soul to sort out any wrinkles in her induction. So that the door was properly managed. There was no one standing in the way.

Shirley we so much enjoyed your company and friendship. You are irreplaceable.

Barbara enjoys following the likes of Taoist Master whom she bred and sold, as these ones are ‘making your mare’. Allanah, currently in work and waiting for some softening in the ground, was bred by Barbara and leased out but she kept an interest in the filly.

Another of her Blue Heaven’s offspring and a favourite with all, is the grey Don Domingo who has an enviable disposition – he has retired from racing to be a Clerk of Course horse for Terry Wenn. Not only was he the right colour, but Don officiated on Matamata Breeders Stakes Day, just 3 weeks out of racing.

Havelock North’s, Jonathan Wallace’s mare Scarlet O’Hara won her fifth race from 17 starts at Wellington.

Napier racing identities Dene Smith and Buddy Beachen returned to the winner’s circle when Peit Rox won at Hokitika.

Hastings breeder Don Gordon and retailer Bryan Hutchinson owner bred the track record breaking mare Quality Street who set a new record for 1020 metres at Reefton. She won by three and a half lengths in 57.70 seconds.

Two Hawkes Bay couples that have never met were on course to see their pride and joy Ruud Awakening win the Karaka Million the countries richest race. Reg and Patsy White from Hastings and Alan and Paula Keall from Taradale are members of The Go Racing ‘Almighty Dawn’ Syndicate who race Ruud Awakening. The Bernardini filly has now won four races and placed a second from her five starts and has won over $600,000 in stakes.

Hastings Owners were to the fore at their local meeting on 14th January winning 4 of the 8 races. Saint Kitt won the maiden 1600 metre for a syndicate of 9 managed by Napier resident Elizabeth Beachen.

Local trainer Patrick Campbell races 1200 metre maiden Er Indoors with Tim Mills of Christchurch. Back in the past Patrick’s father Felix and Tim’s dad Laurie raced many horses together, so it was a walk down memory lane to see the colours in the in the winner’s circle on a horse raced by the next generation.

Another local trainer Guy Lowry, along with cousin Tom and Aucklanders Jeff Dore and Jim McDonald, race Bat Pad who won the 1400 metre maiden.

Second Hope dead heated in the rating 90 1600 metre for owner/breeder/trainer Tim Symes. This was Second Hope’s eighth win.

Sunday 13th January was Owners Day. The Association provided a nice lunch and there were 2 lucky draws for each race. Everybody enjoyed themselves although it was an extremely hot day.

Bi-monthly Trophy winners for October/November were Elliot and Mary Cooper with Hermosa Novia.

Bi-monthly winner for December/January was Steve Ryan with Rockweiler.

Miss Serena opened her winning account at Waipukurau. Trained by Corrina McDougal who races her in partnership with Richard Fenwick the Hastings Racecourse Manager and The Patangata Syndicate and The Ywuree Syndicate.

Other winners at Waipukurau were Turquoise raced by Ann Bary and Cajun raced by The Think Big Synd.

It has taken 20 years for John and Colleen Duncan to owner/breed a Group One winner but that was changed when Fleur de Lune won the $200,000 Railway Handicap on New Years Day. Raced in partnership with Ada Parnwell the tiny mare has had 5 previous Group One placings.

H.B. R. I. Chairman Mick Ormond owner of the brilliant broodmare Gussy Godiva saw another of her progeny win at Woodville. Omana raced by Mick and a syndicate of mainly Hawkes Bay owners is a half sister to A.J.C. Derby winner Roman Emperor and Wellington Guineas winner Rios.

Wanganui roundup rosie hackett

Nashville, as we have said for ages is a very ‘Special Horse’ and he sure was on Saturday at Otaki, when he beat the ‘stars’ and won the Group 1 Haunui Farms WFA. After being unlucky at Trentham, with no room in the Telegraph and missing the start in the Thorndon Mile, he met a very classy field. Ocean Park is heading to the world stage and Veyron is a star and Final Touch has been unbeatable lately.

But on Saturday Nashville gave them all a start and won going away. It couldn’t happen to nicer people, Adrian and Robyn Bull. As well as milking cows, Robyn is a very active Owner always at the stables helping and looking after the horses, always with a smile. It is a family affair with the boys Harry and James and long time friend and staff member Angus Mavor. So many people make the Bull team what it is. They all love Nashville as you would and he loved all of the cuddles and pats and being told how good he is!! But he knows he is good, and he knows he has done well as top horses do.

Robyn said that Saturday was very special, but Christchurch when he won the Couplands Mile was special too because the whole family was there, except for James who was looking after the ones at home. They have a nice team around them at the moment. Borrack another of the stable favorites, with 14 wins is a hard case and he is looking great. Congratulations Team and keep up the good work.

Wayne Marshment has O’Fille looking great as she heads to Trentham for the Cuddle Stakes. She has been honest but hasn’t had a lot of luck lately. He has Brunnhilda nearly ready to go to the races she is a lovely filly. And Finally Ready is nearly finally ready.

Evan & J J Rayner have Taurus looking a picture, he is honest and always tries. Last of the Line is back from a break and looking well.

Paul Belsham has a lot of promising young ones ready to go after a shower of rain as we all are. He has a lovely Stravinsky, a Volksraad and a Towkay all going nicely. He has MacKenzie looking great and Maude is back looking bigger and stronger.

Raymond Connors has his horses looking well and settled in their new home at the Bulls Racecourse. He has Blood Brotha in the Auckland Cup and with the blinkers back on he will go well. He won the Wellington Cup and he has won over $500,000 so that is a very good record.

Well we are well into summer racing, dry tracks, fast times, dust and most of us are praying for rain! This month I was going to write about a local trainer who has achieved a feat not many of us can lay claim to but due to a bit of a mix up you can look forward to reading about him in the next bulletin.

The Central South Island Owners and Trainers Association have just finished running another successful Points Series. To date we have given away $21,000, a great return to owners for their small investment of an annual membership fee.

As I was adding up the points from November 2012 to the end of February 2013 I noticed that the same horses consistently do well in our Points Series but after double checking a few of the ‘newbies’ I was pleasantly surprised to find a new horse and her owner taking first place. Local owner Laurie Howard with his share in the 5yo ‘Pins’ mare ex ‘Azabeel’ will receive a cheque for $2,000. Second place and $1,000 goes to the ever consistent ‘Stormy Rain’ owned by Waimate father and daughter, George and Lucy Hennessy. This year we have two horses sharing third place, these two having featured a few times in past Points Series. Eight year old gelding ‘El Chico’ by ‘Stravinksy’ ex ‘Las Chicas Buenas’ owned by southern couple John and Evelyn Carran and local mare ‘Satisfaction’ by ‘Occidental Tourist’ ex ‘Aim To Please’ owned by Gary, Pam and Andrew Trusttum. Both of these well performed horses receive $500 each.

In the next issue of the bulletin there will be information about the winning owner of the Points Series and also local trainer Brett Inglis.

This season’s Wellington Cup Carnival was run under ideal conditions with fine weather on all 3 days. The victory of Final Touch in the J.R & N Berkett Telegraph was a highlight performance from a top class mare. Already the winner of the Westbury Stud Captain Cook Stakes (Group 1), on the track in December, Final Touch demonstrated her class by following up her Trentham win with victory in the Group 1 Waikato Draught Sprint at Te Rapa in February.

Local members to enjoy success at Trentham included Chris and Susannah Grace with Irish Dream and the Gold Room syndicate with Denlee. Wolverhampton broke through at his 4th start and after a couple of placings to keep the Wellfield Stud team happy and Fay and Ian McSweeney’s Stormy Lass has now had 3 wins.

The promising Tyne Cot scored his second win on Cup Day and followed that up with another victory at his next start at New Plymouth. A narrow victory at Ellerslie on Derby Day made it a hat trick for the Keeper gelding. Boasting a score line of 4 wins and 2 placings from 6 starts Neil Connors and his family have plenty to look forward to with this one. Noel Harris was on board Tyne Cot at Ellerslie bringing back memories of the 2003 Auckland Cup when the same owner/trainer/rider combination triumphed with Bodie.

editors note: TyneCot is from the Traditionally mare Flanders Fields and Tyne Cot is a WW1 cemetery near Passchendaele in Belgium.

Mixed Bloodstock Sale 8, 9 & 10 may 2013 | karaka

It’s a pinhooker’s paradise at New Zealand

Bloodstock’s 2013 National Weanling & Broodmare

Sale. With a host of success stories championing

the merits of pinhooking weanlings from this Sale

to offer as yearlings just a few months later, you too

can get a slice of the action at the 2013 May Sale.

PLUS broodmares, yearlings, racehorses,

unraced stock, stallion shares and

horses-in-training are all on offer at Karaka

this May. Don’t miss New Zealand’s largest

breeding stock Sale of the year, 8 – 10 May 2013.

If you want to secure your next track star for just a fraction of the price paid at the yearling sales, or pinhook weanlings ahead of Karaka 2014, NZB’s National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale (8-10 May) is the place to look. The last 12 months have seen the May Sale break new ground on the track as graduates of the weanling session excel in the world’s elite races. Last year’s Royal Ascot Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes winner Little Bridge was purchased as a weanling, as was Dubai’s Al Quoz Sprint and HK-1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize winner Joy and Fun who also contested the race. This season has seen the success continue as the Sale’s weanling session has produced the Group 1 Toorak Handicap winner Solzhenitsyn, exciting stakes winning sprinters Solar Great and Mosse, plus black-type winners Savvy Dancer and Amberio. For those looking to pinhook weanlings for

the Karaka Yearling Sales next year, the May Sale delivered some great results for astute buyers. Amongst the highlights was the Thewayyouare weanling colt (Lot 533) offered at the 2013 Select Sale. Purchased by Todd Hartley at the 2012 May Sale from Curraghmore Stud for $61,000, the colt was purchased by Willie Leung’s Magus Equine eight months later for a sale-topping $200,000. Added to the mix in 2011 was the ‘Horses-in-Training’ session for horses that have trialled, raced or breezed up for the NZB Ready to Run Sale in the current season. This session will feature again this year, offering a host of opportunities for those looking for a current racing proposition.A large book of broodmares plus yearlings, two-year-olds, unraced horses and stallion shares will also be on offer and catalogues will be available from the first week of April.

Stud Chat With Sam March 2013Nadeem’s had a summer in Australia to almost match our weather here. His current banner horse, the Hawkes trained 3YO Happy Galaxy (Nadeem-Seven Stars by King’s Best) won a Listed race in Melbourne against his own age in January, then backed up a week later in Sydney to beat the older horses at WFA in the Gr.2 Apollo Stakes and give Nadeem his third individual Gr.2 winner and his seventh individual stakes winner. On the back of that sort of form it wasn’t hard to see why he averaged $102,500 at Karaka.

Thanks to those buyers who bought from us at Karaka. As breeders it is satisfying to know that your horses are going to homes where they will get every opportunity. We were particularly pleased to see Kris and Paul Shailler buy our Darci Brahma – Centaine Gu Li filly for $115,000 to make her the second highest priced Darci Brahma filly at Karaka. Our draft for Sydney Easter consists of two Pins(a filly and a colt), an O’Reilly filly and a lovely Zabeel colt. The Pins filly pedigree had a nice upgrade recently with his half brother Sir Ferrari (Testa Rosa-Generous Nature) running second in listed company and giving LA its seventh individual black-type performer for the season.

Saint Kitt (Keeper-Southern Cry) ran a huge 4th for trainer Kelly Burne in the Gr.1 NZ Derby. The gelding was bred/owned by LA in partnership with Jamie and Don Gordon.

It’s not often you get to see your race colours carried to victory on national news but that was exactly the script on Waitangi Day when in front of an exuberant bunch of our friends and fellow owners, the LA bred/owned Kekova (Elusive City-Racing Waters) raced away to win the Listed Pioneer Finance Wairarapa Breeders Stakes on our local course Tauherenikau. The icing on the cake of course was jockey Lisa Allpress riding her 1000th winner. The excitement at seeing a replay of the win on the news later that night almost matched that of the divvy of $5.40! – Amazing I thought given the mares form behind the likes of Final Touch and MufhasaNashville’s brilliant Gr.1 at Otaki was a thrill as his dam Royal Kiss boards at LA for her owner JML Bloodstock/Lib Petagna. She is back in foal to Darci Brahma.

We’ll be showcasing the first of the Per Incanto weanlings at the National Weanling Sale in May. Come and check them out.

David Martin the very well known maître d’ at the Winners Circle at Ellerslie suggested to Auckland Racing Club Director, Victoria Carter, that the Club should set up Skype on a computer on racedays for offshore or local winning owners to be able to feel part of the fun of winning at Ellerslie. To See the Sponsor as well and just feel a part of the atmosphere.

Mrs Carter said, “I thought it was a fabulous idea so raised it at a Board meeting and the Directors agreed it was worth trialling. Now David can do that. We want to make as many owners and trainers know about it. This is especially important for trainers so they can find out their owners Skype details and then we can look at connecting them.

She took a pound bet and the horse won paying 14 pounds. Thereafter the family became regular race attendees whenever there was racing in Wellington. Albert grew up to love the whole experience of sight sound and smell.

Then there was growing up in Wellington, Victoria University and a double degree in English Literature and Political Science. A beltway job with the Internal Affairs for a year followed. But Albert wanted to do his own thing so he resigned and set up an Immigration consultancy that grew like topsy. Albert sold that to Aussie Malcolm, went and lived in the UK and took over that side of the business for Aussie for 2½ years. Coming home he was the operational manager of the entire business which now had far flung branches.

At his ‘stag do’ Albert stood on a table and spoke to his friends. “Lets buy a horse and race it. Who is in? “ There were 13 starters and they each put in $100 a month. In 9 months they had a stake so Albert got in touch with their mate Chris Waller to select a horse from the South Island Sale. Chris was starting out in Sydney and short of cash so the syndicate paid his way. Chris bought them a nuggety bay for $9000 and in time he was named Silky Red Boxer.

Jimmy as he was known was a great scrapper and he also had a huge turn of foot. Not many horses can come home in under 33 but Jimmy could.

He carried the Australian Nomination to the Singapore Gold Cup but was injured in a lead up race and found to have a spiral fracture in a cannon bone. Jimmy’s life was saved by an operation and subsequently returned home (It cost the syndicate 30k to do that) and now enjoys life in a nice paddock in Levin.

Albert was soon running 4 syndicates and the full time job had to go. Go Racing was born.

GO RACING is not just Albert, there is his partner Pat Vinaccia in Wellington. Helping Albert in Auckland is Anoinette McLeod who does Office and Administration. Then Albert’s wife Melissa works part time. It is a well balanced and cohesive team.

Communication with syndicate members is very important. Every week a 7 page newsletter is sent by email, fax or post. If your horse is racing or trialling you will get individual advice as well. Videos of horses working are also sent.

Stakes are held in account and distributions are made when these exceed 10k. Individual annual accounts are sent detailing the entire years income and expenses.

Pivotal to the success is horse selection. Identification of these is done by Albert and Stephen Marsh and a list is drawn up. An overview is taken by Bruce Marsh who Albert says is the greatest yearling judge he has met. (Every horse that Bruce Marsh has strongly endorsed for Go Racing now has black type.)

The short list is compared with trainers Latta, Marsh, McKee Scott and Waller to see if there is duplication of selections and then bid prices decided.

RUUD AWAKENING was bought by the above formula. Her stable name is Bernie and she is very strong willed but the ultimate professional. Her syndicate members are spread far and wide. The press has made a fuss of “Pinetree Meads” being one of the group but there are also 3 people from Invercargill. The proud gent you see leading Bernie on our front cover is one of those. Jack Faul is 88 years young and was a WW II Spitfire pilot. Jack says Bernie was the first horse he has owned as part of a syndicate and winning that race was the most excitement he has ever had in his life.

Where Bernie takes them is a story yet to be told. Albert says she has come up since the Karaka Million. It’s the Diamond Stakes at Ellersie next and then all going well Sydney and then home for a spell. There is a strong sense that she is still untapped. Craig Williams shares that opinion and said he never went for her in the Ellerslie win.

On the site www.goracing.co.nz there is a lot of material that you can check out. There is button on the homepage, ‘Weekly Audio Update’ and separately you can read about GO RACING section to learn about them or click on the ‘Our Stories’ section to see videos.

note: I don’t have any connection or investment with this enterprise but I think from meeting and talking to Albert as well as noting his success I too would be happy to ‘Go Racing’ – Neil Miller.

This year IRT celebrates 40 years transporting horses internationally.

Whether it’s flying a champion racehorse, shuttle stallion, Olympian or treasured pet, IRT has been committed to serving the international horse community.

As IRT reflects upon its four-decade contribution, company founder Quentin Wallace would like to send a message to its supporters across the world.

“What an amazing journey it’s been. On behalf of the global team at IRT I’d like to say a big thank-you to our many valued customers and friends for your trust and continued support,” said Wallace.

“We are extremely proud of our achievements, but ultimately it’s how we shape and revolutionize the industry over the next 40 years that will ultimately define our legacy.”

The IRT journey is a story of persistence, professionalism and ultimately delivering a world-class service to the equine industry.

It all began after the UK born Wallace first visited Australia in 1966, working briefly as a Jackaroo in Western Victoria.

Noticing a high demand for horses Quentin returned to the UK the following year and began shipping horses to Australia by sea with LEP, a large UK based shipping and forwarding agency.

IRT – an Equine Revolution in the Sky – Celebrates 40 yearsIn early 1972, the shipping of horses came to an abrupt halt due to African Horse Sickness and the Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis.

During this period an opportunity presented itself back in Australia to become involved with the flying of horses from Australia and New Zealand to the United States. It was just the break Wallace was looking for and a permanent move to Australia resulted.

With such an intimate knowledge of routes between the UK, Australia and the US, Wallace was able to facilitate horse traffic in both directions by chartering aircraft in the UK to fly horses to Australia, which were then able to return north with horses to the USA.

IRT was born shortly after and the rest, as they say, is history.

Since its inception, refining the transportation process has always been at the top of the list for Wallace and the IRT team worldwide.

By working closely with government bodies and key industry stakeholders, IRT has been able to streamline the process, and reduce the travel time and risk associated with flying horses.

Today, IRT utilises regular cargo carriers and uses self-contained travelling stalls specifically designed to safeguard the horses during a flight and to make loading and unloading the plane significantly easier.

These technical advances, combined with safer handling methods by IRT’s professional grooms, enable horses to arrive at their destination in an optimum state.

IRT has grown from a one-man show into a multi-national company now widely regarded as the best in the business.

Through the close partnership between Quentin Wallace and fellow partners, David Cole and Ross Johnson (NZ), Jim Paltridge (UK), Simon Glennie (USA) and Chris Burke (AUS), IRT has steadily built its international coverage.

It now boasts key operational offices in Sydney (Aus), Auckland (NZ), Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami (USA), Newmarket (UK) and most recently in Stadthagen (Germany).

Globally, IRT employs approximately 40 full-time staff, not including part-time professionals that are regularly used for all the hands-on care of the horses.

Founder, Quentin Wallace, is still very much hands-on with the business and continues to instill within the team the core values of integrity, quality, commitment and innovation, the key ingredients to IRT’s longevity.

Today with the development of IRT’s exclusive Flight Manager Software Program, global offices and quarantine facilities, customers are connected to their horses whenever and wherever they are in the world.

Death of Jack Georgetti obituaryallan fenwick

Well known and very successful Marton horse breeder, owner and trainer Jack Georgetti passed away in January after a short battle with bone cancer. Jack celebrated his 70th birthday on 15 December, and fittingly that day his promising galloper Casino triumphed at Awapuni. The ultra consistent Golan gelding had finally broken through for his maiden victory in November. Mr Georgetti was a natural with horses and had a strong work ethic that helped him breed and train good horses.

The Georgetti family has been involved in racing in the Marton area since the mid-1960s, primarily with horses they bred and trained themselves. Early winners were Wavering and Havering and the latter’s daughter Westend, by Copenhagen II was a speedy sort. There was also the high class filly Brazil whose racing career was cut short by injury. Then there was Ligeiro, out of a granddaughter of Brazil and winner of 8 races including the 1993 Auckland Cup. The Lanfranco gelding ridden by Lance O’Sullivan won this in somewhat controversial circumstances. Although there was an enquiry over alleged interference Ligeiro retained the race. Ligeiro’s half sister Cruzeiro was the winner of 9 races including the Awapuni Gold Cup and the Feilding Gold Cup.

Creil was another Group performer, winner of 4 races including the 2005 Avondale Gold Cup. Jack did not breed Creil himself, instead buying her from racing colleague Graeme Hunt allegedly for $500. Apart from her successes on the track Creil has been a solid performer as a broodmare. At the 2012 National Yearling Sale her colt by High Chapparal was knocked down to Hong Kong bloodstock agent Willie Leung for $650,000 and at this year’s National Sale her 2011 Alamosa colt sold for $80,000.

Jack was passionate about his horses and enjoyed spending hours reading up on their breeding. His results speak for themselves.

Brian Dodds wore many hats in racing obituaryallan fenwick

Although he will always be remembered as the light weight rider of a long shot Wellington Cup winner Brian Dodds, who passed away in Palmerston North in February, aged 75, wore many hats in racing. Commencing as an apprentice at Riccarton, Brian rode out his last few months with Fred Hayes at Hastings. The winner of over 300 races Brian will always be synonymous with Simon De Montfort’s Cup victory at massive odds. However he was associated with a number of other good gallopers including Shut (Ashhurst Pohangina Cup), Aquarelle (Wakefield Challenge Stakes) and Roodyvoo (Woodville Cup). Brian then trained a small team at Hastings during which time he was heavily involved with the Hawkes Bay Apprentice School. After retiring from training he worked as an Assistant Stipendiary Steward.

In the late 1970’s Brian moved to Palmerston North to become an agent for Dalgety Bloodstock and during this time he became Director of the Awapuni Apprentice School. Later, whilst working full time in the farm merchandising industry Brian had over 10 years as the assistant stipendiary steward for harness racing in the Central Region.

Brian will be remembered as a popular yet unassuming man whose presentation was always immaculate.

The basics and The mosT common problem

The hind foot is very important for the performance of the horse. Horses produce most of the power and propulsion from their back legs.

To make speed, the toe of the hind foot should dig into the ground to push the horse forward.

The pedal bone, inside a horses hoof, has basically got the shape and concavity of a pointed shovel. A horse‘s foot is designed to use this shape to its advantage. A horse that correctly uses its hind legs will leave small deep shovel like imprints in the ground after travelling at speed.

how can This naTural sTrengTh of The horse be mainTained?

There are four basic points to follow to keep the horse’s feet sound and in the correct place:

1. proportion:

the hoof size is in proportion to the size of the horse

sufficient depth in the hoof capsule to keep the correct angle of the pedal bone and maintain the concave shape of the sole

2. natural foot shape:

Hoof shape matches coronet shape, white line and pedal bone shape

The shape of the hind foot is more pointed than the front foot and has a steeper angle

3. shape and placement of the shoe:

The shape of the shoe resembles the natural shape of the foot

The placement of the shoe is equally placed around the widest past of the hoof being half way between the toe and the heel

4. balance:

Coronet level to the ground

Length from the coronet to the ground same on both sides

whaT is The mosT common problem in The soundness of The hind feeT?

A typical example of a sound hoof of the performance horse is shown in figure 1 and image 1.

An example of what happens when not maintaining the correct toe shape and not placing the shoe around the widest part of the foot is shown in figure 2 and image 2.

This will result in the foot pulling forward, loosing foot depth and developing a negative angle in the hind pedal bone. The toe quarters pull the opposite side heel quarters inward and forward. This causes the foot to migrate forward and the heels to become low.

In the photo we can see that the hind foot has travelled forward of the center of the leg. The back line has dropped off towards the tail and the heels have become low.

Negative rotation can be found by observing the angle of the cornet. When drawing a line along the cornet it should hit the knee or just below the back of the front knee as in image 1.

If this line hits above the knee, there is a good chance the horse has lost its natural and healthy angle in the hind pedal bone.

Some horses are predisposed to this condition and for those horses correct farrier practice is imperative.

thank you to Faith taylor The CatWalk Spinal Cord Injury Trust would like to take this opportunity to thank Faith Taylor for her incredibly generous and ongoing support of the Trust.

CatWalk is dedicated to raising funds to support the body of scientific opinion that says a cure for spinal cord injury will be found. By challenging the pace and boundaries of research our goal is to enable SCI sufferers to walk again. A cure is no longer a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’. We want those affected by spinal cord injury out of wheelchairs and back on their feet.

Faith Taylor and her family have been committed supporters of the Trust for several years, attending events, donating auction prizes and spreading the word about CatWalk to their friends, family and contacts. Recently Faith once again stepped up to show her support by providing sponsorship for a doctor to travel to the Himalayas with The BIG Cycle team.

The BIG Cycle is CatWalk’s biggest challenge to date. A team of 13 cyclists will complete a high altitude 1000km ride from Lhasa to Kathmandu – a route which includes 10 mountain passes (5 which are over 5,000m elevation) and a trip to Everest Base Camp. Three tetraplegics are completing the ride on handcycles and there was serious concern from their families, friends and doctors about how people with spinal cord injuries and decreased lung function would cope with the altitude at which this trip will take place.

We were lucky enough to find a doctor, Dr Piotr Szawarski who has an interest in Mountain Medicine and has climbed, worked and rescued in the Himalayas before. His experience and expertise is a huge reassurance and his presence could quite possibly make the difference between the success or failure of the trip. Without Faith Taylor’s generous sponsorship Piotr would not be making the trip. CatWalk would like to extend a HUGE thank you to Faith, on behalf of Piotr, the BIG Cycle team, their friends and families and everyone in a wheelchair who stands to benefit from our fundraising!

Early this fall, I got a frantic call from one of my friends. One of her jennets had a foal and just left it in the pasture. The baby was with their horse and “momma donkey” was nowhere to be found. Immediately they took the foal to the barn then found the jennet that had him and took her to the barn. She was a maiden jennet and wanted nothing to do with the foal plus she didn’t have much milk.

The vet came out and checked out the foal and jennet and gave her Oxytocin and something to calm her down so the baby could nurse, however, it didn’t work. I told her to milk the jennet and give the foal the milk. He needed the colostrum.

They milked her and gave the foal the colostrum and throughout the day and night, they would either milk the jennet or try to restrain her so the foal could nurse and “hopefully” she would accept him. ‘No way Jose’. She didn’t like the foal and continually tried to kick him so they were forced to take the foal out of the stall with his mother.

After about 3 days of bottle feeding the foal with milk replacer, my friend and her husband were just about to collapse from exhaustion. Between taking care of their other animals, feeding the foal, and both working, they were desperate for help.

I remembered a story that our farrier had shared with us and also another friend had used successfully. I immediately got on the internet and emailed it to my friend.

You get an Igloo cooler (or something like it) and remove the spigot. Get a piece of PVC pipe that will screw in where the spigot was. Use a lamb’s nipple over the end of the PVC pipe and secure it with a ty-wrap or a hose clamp. Mix up your milk replacer and put it in the cooler and replace the lid. This not only will keep the milk warm but will also keep the flies out. You can hang it on the fence or on the inside of the stall. Then it’s just teaching the foal to suck from it instead of the bottle.

It wasn’t long until she emailed me back. The foal had latched on to Momma Igloo and was doing great. He would run and play and when he got hungry he would run over to Momma Igloo and fill his tummy and go back to playing. They were able to get some sleep and were doing much better too.

Don’t forget this helpful story. You might need it someday if you have foal rejection, a jennet with no milk or a desperate friend.

Why insure your fetus? When purchasing a mare in foal from the broodmare sale, the live foal guarantee may become void.

Not all stallions come with a live foal guarantee, so if your mare was to abort the fetus or if the foal was still born you would not be covered for your loss. Financially you would lose your income from selling your mares foal for that year and you would have to pay for another service fee for the next season.

What options are there?JLT Bloodstock offer the following options when taking out fetus insurance

• 42 day scan to 30 days after birth

• 42 day scan to 6 months after birth

• 42 day scan to 12 months after birth

How do I take out fetus insurance? When you have decided to take out fetus insurance call the team at JLT Bloodstock
