Our Goalto improve tHe eConomiCs, integrity And pleAsure of tHe sport of tHorougHbred rACing on beHAlf of All owners.

Welcome members and readers to the latest edition of the Owners Bulletin. The season continues to highlight the strength of our New Zealand thoroughbred. I do not remember the last time that a New Zealand horse was favourite for the Cox Plate, so early in the markets. Certainly, the dominance of Jimmy Choux, at our recent Hawkes Bay Carnival, has highlighted our form, with the recent placegetters at that Carnival exposing the quality of performance, in their next assignments in Australia. Good luck, to all connections in their respective Melbourne Spring Carnival appearances.

On the local front, members and owners will see the introduction of a revised handicapping schedule. This is to be introduced from the 14th of November 2011, and I encourage you to seek the revised format from either the NZTR Website, which has a brochure. It is also going to be available from Racing Clubs, from their Race Day Offices.

The introduction of a two kg allowance over all grades for fillies and mares, and the anticipated relief of the current bottleneck in Rating 70 grade, are very welcome. This handicapping review, has concluded after widespread industry consultation. All stakeholders were invited to participate, before the final adoption, as outlined. Please make yourself familiar with the new regime through either the online or club information.

All the best for the season, Christmas Racing is but a blink away.

Regards , Neil Oldfield

Its high spring now. A time when foals are feeling the joy of all that spring brings. Its also the Melbourne Cup Carnival time.

Our cover here reflects on that, with the stylized horse memorial sculpture, that honours the sires of our oldest commercial stud in New Zealand. These five stallions left seven progeny, to win a Melbourne Cup.

The stud is of course Trelawney. A beautiful property that lies between Maungatautiri Rd and the Waikato river just below the karapiro Dam.

Thank you Cherry and Brent Taylor for permission to use it and Trish Dunell Photography for the lovely shot.

Also featured is the story of a racetrack warrior of the past who ran in kiwi’s winning Melbourne Cup. Anyone lucky enough to have a horse run in the highest class races (and I have) will know how hard it is to be successful. The highs and the lows are aptly likened to a rollercoaster ride. Also these lucky owners will know how those events stay in the mind, so that it seems important that the stories are told fully with care and respect.

Our “Profile” this month was written by Pam Trustrum of Central South Island. As our Federation is a national organization we want to have these stories come from every region in the country. The world does not finish at the Bombay Hills, or even Tirau.

We are pleased to give some space to Sponsor, Gavelhouse. The principal is Gary Moore and he is an enthusiastic supporter of our publication. Gary tells of the services his company provides.

On pages 8 and 9 we have a special feature on an arrangement that with owners support can be very beneficial to our organization.

Once again we invite your comment and input to help make our Bulletin a reflection of the owners, community in racing.

Our Auckland Owners Association was proud to once again support Counties Racing Club with their Owners Day initiative.

The day dawned to showery weather with a clearance predicted later. The track conditions were heavy and holding. Nonetheless the Oaks Room filled to a comfortable capacity with owners of horses who had raced at Counties in the previous season. Once again there was a happy vibe in the room. It seems that if you get a group of owners together the conversations are more animated.

Our sponsored race the AUCkLAND THOROUGHBRED OWNERS ASSOCIATION 1600 was a fillies and mares maiden event. It is exactly the kind of race we wish to support. The field was 14 strong and remarkably bred from 14 different sires. At the 250 it was anybody’s race but closer to the post it was the keeper mare keepher Close who came down the centre of the track with long strides for a commanding win.

keepher Close was bred by joint owner Julie Mitchell of Howick, from her Grosvenor mare Madam Taka, that she bought as a 3yo. The grandsires of keepher Close are Sir Tristram and Star Way and the next generation sire on the damside is Zamazaan. That is the crème de la crème of breeding here and features many black type winners over a long time. Madam Taka looks an astute purchase

Julie was a Scandrett and her father Doug was a notable builder and racehorse owner in the past. It follows Julie has a lifetime interest in racing and breeding.

The other joint owner is trainer (Class B) Patsy Riley. Patsy is a Counties stalwart and treasure. She claims to be the second oldest person to ride work on Pukekohe Park after Nadine kelly. She says she has implored Nadine to keep riding as she doesn’t want to be the oldest there herself. We don’t know what Nadine thinks of that.

Patsy was sporting an arm in plaster from a fracture. keepher Close had dumped her off at trackwork the week before the race. Patsy had two horses nominated for the race keepher Close and Tsario (a winner since). Her thinking then was to start the latter because of expected track conditions. But that changed after the dumping. Patsy said “I thought if you feel that full of yourself you can darn well start”

keeper Close and the above mentioned Tsario were both very ably ridden in their wins by Derek Nolan who demonstrates very good judgment and is a fine acquisition to the riding ranks here.

Patsy says that keepher Close can make a top stayer on good tracks. Lets hope she builds a good record and becomes a valuable part of our breeding pool.

Later in the day spot prizes were drawn . The weekend for 2 at Castaways Resort at kariotahi was won by Mrs Denise McCaslin of Auckland. Denise also won one of the two memberships presented by our secretary Jim keyte

The free service to Cecconi generously given by Westbury Stud was won by a delighted Paul “Ace” Williams, Course Manager at Whangarei Racing Club. He and his mates had ridden a bus down from Whangarei after a “big night” before. It just turned into a big weekend for Ace. Its just as well these guys are stayers.

Our thanks go to Counties Racing Club Greg Mitchell and staff especially Angela Cumberland for making this a great day. We should do it again!

ellerslie stakes Announcement 20/10/11

Auckland Racing Club today made an announcement regarding its major races for the 2011/12 season.

Chairman of the Auckland Racing Club Board Russell Warwick said “Following on from a successful 2010/11 racing season, I am delighted to announce that Auckland Racing Club will offer stakes $645,000 above New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing’s minimum stake guidelines.”

Included in this announcement are New Zealand’s three richest races – the Group I $750,000 Telecom New Zealand Derby and Group I $500,000 Stella Artois Auckland Cup which complement the Restricted Listed $1,000,000 karaka Million.

Mr Warwick stated that “Running the Telecom New Zealand Derby and Stella Artois Auckland Cup at these new levels are significant milestones for the Club post the cessation of the Racing Minister’s funded feature races.”

Auckland Racing Club also advised that as per last season, its six Group II races held during The New Zealand Herald Christmas Carnival and Auckland Cup Week’s Group III Darley Plate will each continue to be run with a stake of $100,000.

GUEST SPEAkER – Senior Jockey – Mark Hills, with his wife, kerry.

Come and learn of the variances of their working lives. The costs, travel, etc.

Whosyourmaster with owners Judy and Danny Moss

Waikato Jenny Cowan

Judy and Danny Moss are more than racing enthusiasts. They apply themselves in a variety of ways, so valuable to the racing fraternity.

They are Matamata people, living in a new house on their own bit of dirt. The property on Taihoa Rd was at one time Rockfield Stud. It is named for the unique, large rock residing in one of the paddocks.

Stallions and breeding stock ran in those paddocks in years gone by, for Bill Holmes and his brother, Dick. A third brother, Don was a well known barber in town for many years.

Rather strangely, the Moss’s first mare was called Never Lucky and she was that, by name and by nature. However, that has changed in the ensuing years, and their good horse O’Malley’s Boy was one reason, for the change of fortune But another who won on Oct 7th on their home track, is about to step into his shoes is ‘Whosyourmaster’. This colt is a half brother to keep the Peace, out of their mare Peace of Mind. The sire is Captain Rio

Peace of Mind is now 20yrs old, had a filly by keeper last year and visited him again.

Another of the Moss’s is Rockfield Belle which won a maiden at Te Aroha just a couple of weeks ago. By Hawkeye out of Lady Dorothy the filly is trained by Jason Price.

Judy, who was originally from Dunedin, is accountable for all the work with their horses, and Danny seems to do the academics. His 25 years service to the committee of Matamata Racing Club and now Chairman of TRAC consortium, without question, sums up his abilities. Getting even one, replacement, on committees with Danny’s and Judy’s interest seems a long lost hope today.

Although not in it’s original condition, the costly artificial training track the Matamata Club created with Danny’s supervision some 12 years ago, is a valuable facility. Without it, the track could not cope with the 850 horses trained there at the moment.

Long time members, Jennifer and Ross Nickel from Te Aroha, are having huge fun and reward with their horse Commanding Oak. Winning two races on end is not done very often. That has brought celebration and further planning to the fore. Ross and Jennifer are owner-trainers and they have had much input into racing over the years. Commanding Oak was ridden in both races by Trudy Thornton. Well done to all!

Waikato ResidentsNZTROF are looking for someone in the Waikato area to care locally for the

advertising and marketing content of their Bulletin. This would be part-time and the requirements would be to liase and promote business with involvement in

racing/breeding or other with links.

It would be an opportunity for someone with initiative, to kick-start a career in this interesting role. Give our Secretary Jim keyte a call on 0800 696 377.

Hastings chemist Barry Smythe had a deserved win when Bally Heights followed up a run of five second placings when winning at Hawkes Bay. Barry races him in partnership with the “I See Red” syndicate.

A $17,000 dollar purchase by well known owner Ivan Grieve; Simpre Arriba followed a first up second when winning at Hawkes Bay. The Pentire gelding was bred by the late Judy Glazebrook and her sister Jill Gould. He is the tenth individual winner of Dolly Disaster and is a grandson of Caulfield Cup winner Leilani.

Belfast Lad won his ninth race for Tony and Penny Ebbett. A good return on the $2500 paid for him with stakes of $83,000 earned so far.

The Hawkes Bay Racehorse Owners Jumping Trophy has been won this year by Richard Cully. Points are allocated to each jockey riding in jumping races held at Hastings on a 3 2 1 basis.

Havelock North’s Mike Bourke, shares the ownership of Victory Morgan who completed a hat trick at Hawera, it was his seventh victory.

Napier Accountant Paddy Murphy won the Hawkes Bay Racehorse Owners Bi-Monthly trophy co-sponsored by Liz and Richard Wood for April and May; with his Hawkes Bay Cup winner Dom Domingo.

Former Hawkes Bay Racing General Manager John McGifford who shares in ownership with ex jumps jockey Graeme Lord in D’llaro were rewarded when the D’Cash 4 year old won at Te Awamutu. He followed this up by winning at Taranaki.

Ranfurly Shield Hawkes Bay lock identity Hilton Meech’s Vamoose completed a hat trick when winning by 12 lengths at Whanganui. The ownership includes his daughter Anna Follett and Brock and Catherine Peddie.

New Hawkes Bay Racing Committeeman Alistair Cumming received the Hawkes Bay Owners and Liz and Richard Wood Bi-Monthly trophy for June and July. Alistair races Borrack the winner of 4 hurdle races in a row during the winter.

The Bi-Monthly trophies were co-sponsored with the Hawkes Bay Owners Assn. and Liz and Richard Wood. The latter have generously re-sponsored for the next two seasons. They are of course are the Breeder- Owners of the champion Jimmy Choux.

Wanganui Rounduprosie Hackett

Our AGM was on September 23rd . We had one of our legends, John Wheeler as Guest Speaker, he was brilliant but the attendance to hear him was disappointing. Those of us there really enjoyed the night, Thank you Wheels and Linda for taking time out of your very busy lives to come and make our night one to treasure.

At our Wanganui Meeting on Oct 16th, the Hospice Cup was won for the second time by Beau Dane. As you can imagine the owners Mr & Mrs O’Dea, P Bardell, P & V Ford, A & B keighley, J Richardson and Janice Webster were very happy. Second was the local Blood Brotha for the Connors family.

The first 2 year old race went to Liberating, she won very well, a great start for sire Iffraaj. She is trained by the Bothwells for long time owners Mark Freeman , S France and M Colson.

San Rafael made it two runs for two wins when he beat the local Taurus who is a smart type.

Local lady Nicki Marshall as well as Ian Shaw are among the owners in Hooks, who has gone some great races this time in. He has been a challenge but has turned the corner and going really well now. Hooks won at Manawatu, ran 3rd at New Plymouth and won at Foxton on Thursday.

Paul Belsham has Maude going really well too. She is raced by a syndicate that includes first time owners. They are enjoying our great game.

Wayne Marshment has Secret Service looking great and The Ritz is waiting for a good track as is Regal Ruler. He also has two lovely two year olds by Viking Ruler and keeper.

Alexander Fieldes is taking Gina Hart to Christchurch for the Guineas, and Marea Alta will race there as well.

kevin Myers has as usual a strong team heading down there too. His team always go well at this meeting.

The Hombre returned from a 4 month break to win first up for John Bary, Ivan Grieve, John O’Sullivan and kris Skerman. A $50,000 purchase at the 2008 Ready to Run sales, he has now won $236,000.

No Excuse Maggie won her 4th race from 13 starts when winning the $45,000 Weallens Matamata Cup. A $2500 purchase at the 2007 Weanling sale by Wairoa based Howard and kay Jones she has now won $77,000 for the syndicate that races her.

Jimmy Choux Hawkes Bay’s answer to Dan Carter kicked off his new season with a unlucky second to Mufhasa in the Group One Makfi Challenge Stakes. Three weeks later after Jonathan Riddell managed to extricate him off the rail he proved too strong for Mufhasa when winning the Group One Windsor Park Plate. The plan to go straight into the Cox Plate without another race was scrapped when he started to get above himself. 5 weeks between races might have left him a bit short so it was decided to run him in the Group One N.Z. Bloodstock Insurance Classic. To say he only toyed with the opposition might be an overstatement but the connections had a confident smile on there faces with the Cox Plate 3 weeks away.

All the great plans of cabbages and kings came unstuck at the “Breakfast with the Stars” track gallop. Jimmy was partnered by Rekindled interest and it was planned to be a good hit out over 1200 metres. But instead they only did pacework to the straight and then sprinted. Given a brilliant ride by Riddell in the Cox Plate Jimmy coasted to the front at the top of the straight but had no answer to Pinker Pinker’s finishing burst.

MANAWATU Allan fenwick

The Manawatu Association was pleased to sponsor a race at the Labour Day meeting at Woodville. The sponsorship was in recognition of the relationship the Association has had with the Woodville Pahiatua Racing Club over a number of years. The sponsored race was a maiden event over 2200 metres and was won by the 10 year old Gladstone, trained by Francis Finnegan and raced by the onetime mine host of the Gladstone (Wairarapa) Hotel Mr Carroll. Leading rider Hayden Tinsley dictated the pace in the race and Gladstone’s condition enabled him to hold off all challenges. At his previous start Gladstone had raced in a steeplechase event at Ellerslie. Well aware of the trials and tribulations of racing the owner was delighted that at his 49th start he now had a winning photo to hang on the wall. It was great to see the enjoyment that this win brought Gladstone’s connections.

Runner up to Gladstone was Valley of Pentire, a half sister to the New Zealand Derby winner Hail, bred by Association member Barry Clevelly and his wife Hazel who race the mare in a syndicate.

Veteran Awapuni identity and member Laurie Christensen was back in the winner’s circle at the Feilding Cup meeting when his mare Miss Darley recorded her 2nd win. Laurie has been racing and training at Awapuni for over 40 years and generally has a horse of some ability, racing at any one time. He was one of the earliest to recognise the benefit of using a pool for training purposes and may have been the first in the area to set up a horse pool and make it available for public use.

Woodville owner trainer Neil Connors enjoyed a winning spree in July with 3 winners in the space of 8 days and backed that up with a further 2 wins in August and September. This was a tremendous effort from a small team of 3 horses raced by Association members Neil and Erin Connors.

The Foxton racing community was delighted to see another of their old boys featuring on the Australian racing stage at the highest level. Former Foxton lad Chris Waller has already established himself at the top of the training tree in Australia, having won the Sydney Training Premiership for the 2010/2011 season and a host of group races. Trent Busuttin’s first Australian campaign on his own account could not have ended better when Sangster, part owned by Association member Matthew Fenwick, did enough to win the 2011 Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby. We are sure that past member and now Macau based trainer Paddy Busuttin is justly proud of the results achieved by his former pupils. There was a sense of de ja vu in the Fenwick household as Paddy had trained Plume, part owned by father Allan, to win the 1990 Group 1 N Z One Thousand Guineas.

The Central Districts Apprentice Academy will complete their 2011 school year with presentation of certificates and prizes after racing at Awapuni on 10 December. All racing supporters are welcome to attend. Academy Director Sarah Malone and Riding Master Darryl Bradley are justifiably pleased with the results achieved by current apprentices.

The Association AGM is set down for Tuesday, 29 November at Foxton. Further details will be contained in the Notice of Meeting. The Committee is keen to see some new Committee members. This is an opportunity for you to become more involved.

Esther Black and Thelma Foley are proving that the Timaru training track once dominated by the opposite gender, is now an equal and fair playing ground. Two wins to each trainer at recent race meetings just goes to show the fairer sex can hoof it with the best.

Homebred gelding ‘Imthejoker’ looked a good chance in the R80 1700m race at Waimate on the 26th of September for Thelma and that proved to be true with the plucky five year old Le Paillard ex Olini gelding leading from start to finish with the ace barrier draw and four kilo claimer Toni Direen. A very rewarding win for Thelma who still rides her own trackwork each day. Earlier in the day at Waimate, the diminutive filly ‘kerrytown Lady’ showed a big heart against more sizeable opponents in the 3yO 1200m. After a very slow start the Shinko king ex Golden Satchel filly stormed home late to take the win from a small, but nice field of horses.

Esther Black thought the win from knockyasoxoff back in August in a R75 2100 would keep her going for a long while, but she was more than happy to take a double winning effort at Wingatui on the 2nd of October. Mr Scud ridden by Jay Misbah in the R65 1200 won impressively leading from start to finish. The 7yo Cullen ex O’Danza gelding owned by North Islands’ Matt Jolly, has a very tidy race record for his 20 starts. Elated with a win at the start of the day Esther then lined up knockyasoxoff in the Jay Misbah/Shankar Muniandy R75, 2200m. The 5yo Stark South ex Hollywood Star ridden by Jay Misbah had his trainer biting fingernails as he rounded the home turn in last place only to sprint down the outside of the field to take the win and repeat the dose of joy for competent horsewoman, Esther and co-owner and husband, Tim.

Central South Island Owners Association held their annual Awards Evening at the Phar Lap Raceway back in September. A good turn out enjoyed a meal and an informative speech from guest speaker Brian Anderton.

The Trainer of the year Award went to Washdyke pair of Mel and Warwick Coles. Consistent performances from Windwhistle and Flying Petal ensured Mel and Warwick were in the running for the award but it was a late season win from Tristan’s Choice that saw them narrowly take top honours.

The Horse of the year Award was bestowed upon Graeme Dobbs from Orari for his efforts with Pins gelding ‘ya Dreamin Jonesy’. Four wins in January and February of this year including the Dunedin Casino Invercargill Gold Cup proved the purchase of the gelding, to be a great idea, by the very experienced horseman.

When talk arises of “The Race of the Century” the names of Bonecrusher and (Our) Waverley Star come to the fore. But there was another meritorious performance that should be recalled. That of THE FILBERT who was the unlucky horse in the race.

Bred by John and Mrs Shirley Goodman by Souvran GB out of the stout mare Fauxaan the damsire of whom was Zamazaan and the Grandamsire Faux Tirage. This is the “Belle line of the number 18 family. A filbert is a South African hazelnut and noted for being very difficult to crack. John said this was very true of the horse throughout his racing days.

During his auspicious career The Filbert was trained by Don Couchman of Hawera. The Goodmans were farming in kakaramea, South Taranaki. They now live at karapiro and Don is retired at Papamoa. The ownership was shared by Vic French and brothers Clem and Reece Gilbert. John says he is the only surviving owner today.

John refers to the horse as ‘Filbert but his stable name was Bert. His strapper was Rex Burt, so on racedays he became Bertie.

The Filbert began his career with a late 2yo second at Otaki in 1983. This promising start was followed by a series of placing and wins. In fact he weighed in on every one of his first nine starts. Consistency was the pattern of his career.

His 4yo spring saw him over the ditch with wins and placings at Rosehill and Flemington. Then a second at Werribee followed a 5th in the Waterford Crystal Vase at Moonee Valley

Returning home The Filbert carried on racing in hot WFA company. His next 5 starts saw four placings and then came a win in the Air New Zealand Stakes on 23 February 1985, where he beat Silver Elm and Shifnal Prince in a tight finish. The time for the 2000m was a fast 2.01.9. This win earned him an invitation to run in The Japan Cup.

The lead up started with 3 close up finishes in NZ then came –

3-13,12 Oct, 1985 Caulfield Stakes 2000m

4-18, 19 Oct, Caulfield Cup 2400m

4-14 , 26 Oct, Cox Plate 2050m

Then it was off to Japan on an all expenses paid trip. This entailed quarantine for the horse and he had the misfortune to suffer colic there. The iron horse rallied bravely from that and in the race to go down in a fighting 3rd to Symboli Rudolf and Rocky Tiger (both JPN), on 24 November 1985. Gary Phillips was the rider for this race as he was a regular rider of the horse.

As a 5yo, a campaign was launched to have the Filbert at the 1986 Melbourne Cup at his prime. The results went like this –

11-11, 6 Sept, Memsie Stakes 1400m

2-7, 20 Sept, Feehan Stakes 1600m

4-13, 25 Sept, Underwood Stakes 2000m

4-6, 11 Oct, Caulfield Stakes 2000m

9-18, 18 Oct, Caulfield Cup 2400m

3-13, 25 Oct, COX PLATE 2000m

tHis is tHe story tHAt JoHn told me of tHe 1986 Cox plAte

“At the time that Gary Stewart made his move on Bonecrusher, The Filbert was holding a handy position on the rails with Drought and Waverley Star outside him.

The forward move caused a tightening with other jockeys trying to improve. The Filbert was hampered on to the rail and then carted to the back of the field by a tiring horse. His rider Gary Murphy set him alight through and around runners and he burst into the clear 4 wide at the top of the straight. From there he made ground on the leaders all the way up the short straight. This was recognized as “the run of the race” and The Filbert was made one of the favourites for the Melbourne Cup.

The first Tuesday of November1986 arrived and The Filbert together with the Caulfield Cup winner Lomondy was floated down to Flemington from Ballarat. They had both been staying at Pat Paynes stable. Lomondy was the short price favourite for the Cup. The connections of The Filbert had juicy odds on Lomondy – The Filbert double and hopes were high with one leg in.

The Filbert was unloaded from the float at Flemington under the glare of media cameras and it was found that he had displaced a front shoe. The plate was quickly replaced but watchers had seen the horse wince at the shoes removal and somebody reported this to race officials. Replated the horse was 100% ready to race and was saddled up when Professor Bourke the VRC vet came to the box. Despite protestations Burke said to Don Couchman.”Sorry son he’s Out. This was the same man who had put kiwi out the year before

The late ken Browne (of jumping fame) who was at Flemington, came to the connections with his commiserations. He advised them that he was the current President of the Waikato Racing Club and he was offering them a late nomination to the pending Waikato Gold Cup.

The Filbert returned home and on 22 November 1986 won the Waikato Gold Cup 2400m carrying 58kg in 2.24, which was a race record. It still stands today.”

Bounty Hawk was second and Run For Cover third. Thence followed a Group 3, 1600 win at Te Aroha on 6 December and a WFA 1600m win at Manawatu.

The Filbert raced on in NZ with his typical toughness and consistency and was retired as a 7yo in 1988 to the lush dairy pastures of kakaramea. He died prematurely at the age of 11 and was buried in a field next to his mother.

The Filbert was honest, durable, adaptable and one very tough nut indeed.

Formerly the pair spent two years in Hong kong where Steven worked in his profession and Lucinda taught English.

you may run across Lucinda at trials and RTR’s, With her sunny smile she is easy to spot. I said to her “If your Dad is the king of Singapore should we call you Princess” She said, “No just call me Luci”

We would greatly appreciate our members seeking quotations from JLT. If this occurs it will encourage them to keep going with us. To keep this Bulletin up to a good standard and increase the content requires funds. In this respect you can help.

Gavelhouse – Trading horses Online : Racing into the FutureThere are many great ideas shared on how to grow the sport of Thoroughbred racing and the Industry’s struggle to attract new and young racing fans is well documented around the world.

While the traditional Auction method will be with us forever, online trading not only brings the Industry in line with current computer age trends, but also offers considerable benefits to buyers and sellers. The no commission service, low advertising costs and the ability to reach a wide range of potentially new clients, means the internet is becoming a valuable resource for every small owner and breeder.

With the economic environment, in addition to the continued growth in broadband, it makes good sense to capitalise on every available opportunity to expand the sale ring and develop new markets. In downturns, buyers are more willing to search for bargains, and there is no better way to search for a bargain than online.

The researches tell us quite clearly, that people are going online in droves, so breeders and owners should be embracing technology, to provide an ever increasing accessibility to information, on their young and breeding stock, for sale. Many horses are bought and sold online that never reach the Auction house. Vendors can list a horse anytime and from anywhere, eliminating costly delays of waiting for scheduled auctions and expensive associated costs.

Exposure creates awareness and now is a wonderful opportunity for New Zealand owners and breeders, to add to their current marketing strategies and use the online platform, as an additional selling tool and build their web presence.

Meet Richie at Three Days OldBorn on World Cup Final night, as Richie “the Great One” was holding the cup aloft, was this Pins colt, from the top racemare Boundless.

Boundless was bred by Trelawney Stud and raced by Trevor Mckee, Cherry Taylor, Paul Dallimore and Neil Miller. As reported recently Boundless was bought back by Trelawney Stud.

Cherry says the big boy shall be known as Ritchie McHorse.

Mount Aspiring – a recent sale to Australia

Fay Bailey is the most enthusiastic and passionate member of our local Association. At 77 years of age, she is always the first person to book a seat on the bus for the annual Stud and yearling Tour, and to buy her ticket for our Phar Lap Awards evening.

Her interest in racing was nurtured at an early age, with both of her grandfathers, and various other family members, owning and training racehorses.

Fay’s father owned and trained greyhounds, but Fay was not a fan, she thought “It was an insult to a horse and if they had had a monkey on their backs she would have been more interested”

Fay and her late husband Jack, raised their family of four children on their 500 acre farm at Maungati. One regret Fay has is that she was never given the opportunity to learn to ride, so when her daughter Joanne became an accomplished horsewoman, she was thrilled.

For twelve years Fay was an active member in the Order of St John, Timaru, and attended many race meetings and trials, for both the Galloping and Trotting codes, as a First Aider. She was always concerned with the safety of the jockeys and drivers during the racing, and in particular the jumping races, but what she loved most about the job was it gave her the opportunity of being up close to the beautiful horses.

In 1986 Fay was offered a share in her first racehorse kijana, who was trained by kevin Miller at Ashburton. kevin shifted to Australia and kijana was taken over by Steven Woodsford. kijana brought Fay a lot of pleasure winning on two occasions, including the 1988 Geraldine Cup.

Her next racing interest was a share in the Steven Woodsford trained Menacious, who was also a winner. Fay said, “Having a horse with Steven was wonderful because I became great friends with him and his family and was able to stay with them on numerous occasions and help out around the stables.”

Of later years Fay has had shares in horses trained by Michael Daly at Washdyke, with varying levels of success. Her best performer to date has been the D’Cash mare Martina, who won four races and was a consistent placegetter.

Fay appreciates the many hours of hard work the trainers and their stable staff put in with the horses to achieve success on the racetrack.

In younger days, Fay and her husband Jack went to the kranji races in Singapore. They found it a wonderful experience, and couldn’t believe the millions of people that appeared to be there. They were told to purchase food and to put their bets on before going up into the grandstand as they would be unable to move around freely once the races started.

Last year Fay’s daughter Cynthia took her on a surprise trip to Hong kong and whilst there they went to race meetings at both Sha Tin and Happy Valley. At Sha Tin they were taken to a corporate room and seated with other guests including an English jumps trainer and his daughter. They were given a tour of the parade ring and able to see the winning jockey coming in after the race. Fay said, “I felt so privileged to be there, it was amazing.”

Fay thoroughly enjoys her days at the races, chatting with other owners, trainers and jockeys, and catching up with friends. Watching her horse racing in the stable colours gives her a great sense of pride and immense pleasure, and she loves them no matter how they perform on the day.
