PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEJosh Richardson

HAPPY DERBY! (It’s strange times to say that in September.) It’shard to believe summer is winding down and fall will soon be in fullswing. Kids are back in school in some form or fashion and we areall crossing our fingers that we can have fall sports in somecapacity. But Owl Creek has lots going on to look forward to…

Labor Day Weekend is fast approaching, and we have Music onthe Lawn for that Saturday evening and Food Trucks at varioustimes throughout the weekend. Please check the website for anupdated schedule.

Fall in Owl Creek is a time I always look forward to with manyevents including Tennis Tournament, Golf Scramble, Campout andOktoberfest being the highlights. As for the Campout, we havefamilies heading back to Otter Creek on Sept 18 -20. We reservedDogwood Blossom a larger section of the campground giving usmore campsites to spread out. We will be asking for volunteers tohelp and will send out a link to Sign-Up Genius very soon.Oktoberfest will follow the rescheduled Golf Scramble on October9th. It will include Food Trucks, Beer Vendors, and 2 bands for yourenjoyment. As a replacement to our Splash Jams around the poollook for a Grass Jam on the lawn at the Pavilion in October. We willshow a movie and provide snacks for the kids. Look for moreinformation about that in October’s newsletter.

Please read the additional article titled “Town Hall and NewResident Reception”.

We, as an HOA Board, understand that the decisions we make aregoing to impact each resident in its own way. Residents will seethose impacts through the eyes of their own family, so we arealways seeking feedback and ways to make the community better. In keeping with this theme, I am challenging each board memberto look in their respective area and ask a few questions as we lookto improve upon this great community:

1. What should we stop doing?2. What should we start doing?3. What should we continue doing and improve upon?

As for some near-term improvements, we are investing in theFitness Center as it has seen a big increase in usage this year. Weare going to be adding a Hoist Fitness Functional Trainer (HD-3000), an additional bench, kettlebells, foam roller, and resistancebands. We will be getting rid of some of the broken/outdatedequipment and reworking the floor plan. We are also researchingoptions for a fence by track and looking to add some landscapingaround the Pavilion.

I would like to give a BIG thank you to our management team,Linda and Lori for their leadership during a challenging pool season.Special thanks to Brian Gahlwyler, our HOA Board VP ofOperations, and our lifeguards for doing a great job working tomake sure we had a fun and safe season for all!

Please feel free to share your ideas via email [email protected] or when you see a boardmember around the neighborhood.

Thanks, Josh

OWL CREEK OKTOBERFESTSaturday, October 10th3 PM – 11 PM

This year marks the Ninth Annual Owl Creek Oktoberfest and whilewe have to be ever mindful of COVID and restrictions relatedthereto, the Oktoberfest Committee has been hard at workplanning one of Owl Creek’s greatest events. As you might expect,we are still finalizing some of the logistics and details. We plan toencourage social distancing, by having fewer and more spacedtables under the tent. We will have multiple sanitizer stations, encourage guests to bring their own chairs and have tables sprayeddown by our OC workers. We also plan to offer food exclusivelythrough food trucks – but which will still include your Germanfavorites. To this end, we plan to encourage our vendors to beprepared for an increased number of to-go orders to accommodatefolks who want to join in on the fun from home.

While it may look a bit different this year, we think the 2020Oktoberfest will be as fun as ever. With the understanding thatsome of these plans may have to be tweaked, we plan to featurethe following:

• Multiple Food Trucks (at this time, we expect those to includeSchnitzelbank, Red Top Gourmet Hot Dogs and Germany’s #1Food Truck)

• 2020 Owl Creek Oktoberfest Mug for sale (limited supplyavailable so we encourage ordering those as soon as possibleby sending an email to the Lodge; cost is $16)

• Multiple Oktoberfest draft beers• 2 live bands (The Rheingolds and the Polecats)• Recorded German music throughout the day• Beer, Wine, Soft Drinks and Water available for purchase• Designated tent area for Seniors

We are hoping to send final details in early September. In themeantime, this is one of the most festive events Owl Creek offers,so plan on joining us under the tents, next to the playground, onOctober 10th for some German fun!

BE A GOOD NEIGHBORWe all can just get along. The key? Communication. It’s often thebest way to prevent and resolve conflict before it reaches the legalsystem. You don’t have to be friends or spend time together toachieve a peaceful coexistence, but you should try to be a goodneighbor and follow these tips:

Say hello. At the mailbox, while walking the dog or when you see amoving van arrive, introduce yourself. Learn your neighbors’names and regularly offer a friendly greeting.

Provide a heads up. If you’re planning a construction project, altering your landscaping or hosting a big party, contact yourneighbors beforehand.

Do unto others. Treat neighbors as you would like to be treated.Be considerate about noise from vehicles, stereos, pets, etc.

Know your differences. Make an effort to understand each other.Differences in age, ethnic background and years in theneighborhood can lead to different expectations ormisunderstandings.

Consider the view. Keep areas of your property that others cansee presentable.

Appreciate them. If the neighbors do something you like, let themknow. They’ll be pleased you noticed, and it’ll be easier to talklater if they do something you don’t like.

Stay positive. Most people don't try to create problems. If aneighbor does something that irritates you, don’t assume it wasdeliberate.

Talk honestly. Tolerance is important, but don’t let a real irritationgo because it seems unimportant or hard to discuss. Let yourneighbors know if something they do annoys.

Be respectful. Talk directly to your neighbors if there’s a problem.Gossiping with others can damage relationships and createtrouble.

Remain calm. If a neighbor mentions an issue, they have with you, thank them for the input. You don’t have to agree or justify anybehavior. Wait for any anger to subside before responding.

Listen carefully. When discussing a problem, try to understandyour neighbor’s position and why he or she feels that way.

Take your time. Take a break to think about what you and yourneighbor have discussed. Arrange to finish the conversation atanother time.

FALL GARDEN TIPS

Fall is just around the corner! It won’t be long until the rakes andleaf blowers are out, but there’s more that can be done thisseason than just wrangle leaves! Now is the time to startplanning - a little work in the fall will guarantee a beautifulgarden in the spring. Below are a few tasks you may want to addto your to-do list:• Plant (small): The fall is a great time to plant trees, shrubs, and

other perennials. Opt for smaller plants! Not only are they lessexpensive and easier to handle, but they can catch up withlarger plants when given a chance to establish roots over thefall and winter. Having a healthy root system will improve thegrowing season in the spring!

• Mulch: Add mulch where needed to insulate the soil toprotect plants’ roots, prevent weeds, and help retainmoisture. Avoid piling it against trunks, crowns, or stems toprevent rot.

• Plant bulbs: This is a simple way to get a head start andensure beautiful spring blossoms. Consider daffodils, tulips, crocus, hyacinth, and snow drops, to name a few.

• Prune: Many shrubs, trees, and ornamental grasses benefitfrom fall pruning. Look up your varieties to determine when isbest.

• Vines on Trees: Consider removing vines that are growing onyour trees to keep them healthy. All vines will cause structuraldamage as they grow on trees. Vines literally glue themselvesto the bark of a tree as they climb, that increasedweight can potentially break branches.

Happy gardening!

All yard waste must be tied, bundled or containerized.

Waste Management picks up yard waste on Mondaymornings at the curb.

They Take:• Leaves• Branches tied and bundled in 4’ lengths

(Duct tape is very easy to use).• No branch larger than 3” in diameter.• Grass• Pretty much anything out of the yard except dirt.

They Do Not Take:• Cut up logs (place the logs at the curb and put a sign on itstating FREE FIREWOOD). It will be gone in less than a day.• No large hedges.
