Congratulations on becoming a member of the fi rst-year class at Michigan Technological University, and welcome to our community! We share fi ve values that will provide a framework for your Michigan Tech experience.

Community: During Orientation, you will meet other members of the Michigan Tech community. It is important that you treat one another with kindness, thoughtful consideration, and respect. Be generous in your attitude with one another and support your peers. You will also have the opportunity to learn more about the local Houghton community that you will call home during your time at Michigan Tech.

Scholarship: Academic success is central to your experience at Tech. You will learn about campus resources and hear tips from faculty, staff, and experienced students that will help you excel in your studies.

I am a part of Orientation Executive Staff as Training Coordinator. I am at Michigan Tech to study biology, and I chose to come here for the stunning natural areas the Keweenaw provides, and the research opportunities along with them. I am constantly in pursuit of understanding the unique diversity and intricate systems of living things and ecosystems, especially those of the Great Lakes Region. I hope through Orientation I can inspire a love for learning and introduce incoming students to the variety of opportunities this unique place holds.“

I’m the Logistics Coordinator on this year’s Orientation Executive Staff. When I arrived at Tech, I was the only person double-majoring in theater technology and mechanical engineering. Despite the odd combination, I will graduate having had three internships in the industry, including experience working on machinery for Cirque du Soleil, Disney, and more. I won’t say that anything is possible, but my experience at Michigan Tech makes me have to think twice. My goal for Orientation is to show all the new students how inspiring this place can be.”

As a psychology major at Michigan Tech, I have had great opportunities and experiences such as interning in a community transition class for adults with moderate cognitive impairments, and volunteering as a crisis line specialist. Through Orientation, I hope to help guide students to step out of their comfort zone and become a part of our community.

Studying materials engineering at Tech is incredibly interesting to me, but what really keeps me going is the outdoors. I work for Michigan Tech’s Outdoor Adventure Program and love spending my free time hiking, exploring, and taking photos of the wonderful Keweenaw and the rest of Upper Michigan. This summer I’ve been researching chemical properties at a local business in Hancock, just across the bridge.”

ORIENTATION CHECKLISTUse this handy checklist to stay on track during the fi rst few days of Orientation Week.

Move InThere’s a 20-minute limit for unloading all your belongings into your residence hall in order to keep everything running smoothly.

After unloading, please park student cars in Lot 21. Visitors and parents can park in Lot 10.

HuskyCardYour HuskyCard is your offi cial Michigan Tech photo ID. It grants access to all campus buildings, meals, and events, so make sure you keep it on you at all times.

On Saturday, pick it up in the MUB Ballroom (building 34). You’ll need a photo ID and your Michigan Tech M-Number, found on the cover of this booklet. If you didn’t submit a photo online, you can have it taken there. After Saturday, visit the IT Service Center in the Van Pelt and Opie Library (17).

Parking DecalIf you have a car on campus, bring a valid photo ID and your current vehicle registration to fi nalize your parking arrangements. On Saturday, visit the MUB Ballroom (34). After Saturday, visit the Administration Building (1), Room 100.

Bike RegistrationRegister your bike online at: mtu.edu/publicsafety/crime/bicycle

This helps return lost or stolen bikes to their proper owners. A decal will be mailed to the address you provide, which you should affi x to your bike frame.

Connect Your ComputerIf you need assistance, visit the IT Service Center in the Van Pelt and Opie Library (17) or call 906-487-1111.

I’m a senior year electrical engineering student. I transferred to Michigan Tech two years ago from China. I chose Michigan Tech because I like the beautiful and fascinating landscapes in the Houghton area, and it gave me chances to meet interesting people from all around the world. I like taking pictures and I’m currently taking photos for Michigan Tech’s newspaper, The Lode. I love photographing people and scenes on campus. Here’s me on the top left, and some of my photos.”

PLACEMENT TESTINGModern Language Placement TestsFrench, German, and Spanish

These tests are required for students who have prior experience in French, German, or Spanish. It ensures placement into the appropriate language level/course. You are encouraged to pre-register for the exam at the following link:

mtu.edu/humanities/undergraduate/modern-languages/register

You may also register onsite (please have your ID available). Spatial Visualization TestAll engineering and engineering management students are required to take this test. You must bring your Michigan Tech email address, M-number, and a #2 pencil. It determines placement in First-Year Engineering courses.

ALEKS Math Placement Test

The ALEKS placement assessment will be available for students who did not complete the assessment(s) during the regularly scheduled time. Students will need to bring a credit card with them to pay the $25 fee for the test.

Intensive English as a Second Language (IESL)/TOEFL

Students enrolled in English as a Second Language (ESL) are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) before registering for classes. Bring your M-number and a form of photo ID with you to the test.

I recently returned home from studying abroad in Germany. This experience has changed my scope of the world and it will be an adventure I will never forget.
