Our School Welcome to our school. One World International School offers high quality International education in a nurturing multi-cultural environment. Our students come from many countries around the world and are confident, articulate and often speak other languages, in addition to English.

Our ethos is to deliver a highly personalised education for all students. With a high teacher-student ratio in every class, our teachers have more one-to-one time with each student to provide feedback and improve learning.

One World International School is a special place where every member of our community is valued and respected. This community is at the heart of everything we do, from cultural festivities and celebrations, to our House system and especially in the classroom. As a school we understand that one of the most important aspect of learning is the relationship between teacher and student. This relationship is fundamental for students to feel safe and secure and allows inquiry, experimentation and discovery to take place in the classroom. With these skills being taught in school it enhances and encourages creativity and collaboration for our students and gives them the skills, which are required for an ever-changing world.

For students that relocate during their school life, it is important to be confident that the standards of the school are such that they compare with other similar international schools. At OWIS we undertake the International Schools’ Assessment (ISA), undertaken by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). These are external assessments that are not specific to a single curriculum but evaluate core skills, allowing schools to check the reliability of their internal assessments. From the data received from ACER and our own formative and summative testing we are confident that we are delivering a high quality curriculum in an optimum learning environment.

Our MissionOur motto is: One with the World. One World International School aims to develop independent, inquiring, lifelong learners, whilst fostering internationally minded individuals within the school and the wider community.

Our AffiliationsOne World International School is part of the Global Schools Foundation (GSF), which is a Singaporean based, not-for-profit foundation. GSF was founded in the year 2002 to serve global communities with high quality and affordable education, with the mission to cultivate and nurture young minds into global leaders of the future.

The Foundation school network comprises 20 campuses across seven countries. GSF schools are an international network of award-winning schools offering International Baccalaureate, Cambridge IGCSE and other Asian curriculums.

In the past few years, four GSF school students have secured IB World Topper positions and over 30 GSF school students have scored over 43, and the GSF IB school averages being one of the highest in Singapore Foreign System schools. GSF students have also achieved outstanding results in the IGCSE exams.

In order to serve the wider global communities in ASEAN, South Asia and the Middle East, GSF has a “multiple-brand” approach to allow it to tailor specific educational programmes.

Our StaffOur teaching and support staff comes from many different countries; in particular the UK, Australia, Canada, Singapore and USA. The academic staff are all well qualified professionals, most of who have previously worked at international schools and have experience of an inquiry-based approach to learning. Whilst we are a relatively small school, we have a generous number of support staff including assistant teachers and a full-time qualified nurse and librarian.

OUR CURRICULA

One World International School follows the International Baccalaureate’s Primary Years Programme (PYP), where it is believed that student learning is best done when it is authentic, relevant to the “real” world, and transdisciplinary; where the learning is not confined within the boundaries of traditional subject areas but is supported and enriched by them. In the PYP, each student has the opportunity to be engaged in ways that are physically, emotionally and intellectually appropriate while it is linked to their personal background and previous knowledge.

In the PYP, a balance is sought between acquisition of essential knowledge and skills, development of conceptual understanding, demonstration of positive attitudes and taking of responsible action. Through collaborative planning, teachers suggest central ideas within units of inquiry that are globally significant and conceptually based. This defining of the central idea and the structuring of inquiry to support its understanding is one of the characteristics of the PYP planning process. Throughout the learning process, the prime objective of assessment in the PYP is to provide feedback on the process of learning with less emphasis on the product from the learning and it is for each individual student. Teachers and peers give informative feedback to guide students towards knowledge, skills, and understandings of the programmes’ central ideas.

In the final year of the PYP, students participate in the culminating project, the PYP Exhibition. This requires that each student demonstrate engagement with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and conceptual awareness learned in previous years. The Exhibition additionally provides the opportunity for students to exhibit the attributes of the Learner Profile. The PYP Exhibition is a platform to show to the whole school community the students’ development through their engagement with the PYP.

You can read more about the PYP Curriculum on the IB website at www.ibo.org/pyp/index.cfm

As our school grows into the secondary years, we will be adopting the same philosophy working towards study for the IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education), internationally recognised qualifications for entry into the last two years of higher secondary education.

The focus is on providing personalized education in a multicultural setting. Small class sizes ensure that each student has the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge, discover their talents, have support for their individual learning styles and reach their own potential. We aim for every student to be successful with an education that is a bridge to the future.

Whilst continuing with an inquiry approach to learning, students follow a curriculum that has been developed to address the needs and requirements of our Middle School. This is based upon the UK National Curriculum, adapted for an international school context. Subjects studied include English, Mathematics, Science, Mandarin, Humanities, Physical Education (PE), Art, Music, Drama, Information Literacy, Citizenship and Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE).

As an accredited Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) School, our Science and Mathematics programme is a well-structured programme based on the CIE syllabus. Our English programme incorporates Literacy and Language, providing stimulating lessons leading to a high level of English competency.

You can read more about the CIE Curriculum on the IGCSE website at www.cie.org.uk

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION AT OWIS

Our Early Childhood classes 1 and 2 provide a comfortable and secure environment for children to take their first educational steps in school. These help form the essential building blocks for children’s future learning. Children learn best through first-hand experience. We provide an interesting, challenging environment with a wide range of opportunities, in which children can be actively involved in their learning through talking, exploring and playing. In this setting, we take great care to support each child’s developing self-esteem.

Whilst children come to school with a range of abilities and experiences, we aim to develop each and every child according to their needs. From the early stages, emphasis is placed on development of gross and fine motor skills, creativity and development of language and social skills.

Throughout the programme, a rich language environment is provided. Their speaking and listening skills are fostered, as they interact with books and stories and become aware of the sounds of language before beginning to learn to read and write. Development of the understanding of simple mathematical ideas, progresses to the introduction of numerals and mathematical symbols.

Through four PYP Units of Inquiry each year, children are helped to understand themselves and their interactions with others, the world around them and their creative potential.

A programme of physical education, daily lessons of Mandarin, regular swimming lessons in EC2, and specialist music and art lessons further enrich classroom learning.

PRIMARY EDUCATION AT OWIS

The Primary Years, from 5-11 years old, are often the most important and most remembered years of school life. At One World International School, we believe in these formative years it is vital to foster natural curiosity, promote confidence and an eagerness for learning in partnership with parents.

Preparatory class is the first grade and provides a smooth transition from the Early Childhood 2 year at One World International School. As children at this stage have gained more independence, they are usually able to communicate and focus attention for longer periods of time. Learning becomes more formalised although still retains an element of play.

From Preparatory to Grade 5, students learn through discrete subjects and integrated Units of Inquiry, the skills, concepts and knowledge related to English, Mathematics, Science and Technology, Social Studies, and Personal and Social Education.

As part of our Primary Years Programme (PYP), all students participate in six different Units of Inquiry each year. Each Unit of Inquiry:

Is a significant, relevant and challenging learning experience

• Builds on the prior knowledge of the students

• Involves students in a range of learning activities

• Requires students to engage in positive action

• Integrates diverse subject areas whenever meaningful and appropriate

Through these Units of Inquiry, the classroom becomes a centre of structured inquiry through which students acquire skills and build new knowledge. These Units of Inquiry become our school’s Program of Inquiry (POI).

Mandarin is taught as both a native and non-native language on a daily basis. The curriculum is further enriched by regular lessons of art, music, speech and drama, and physical education including swimming. To ensure learning is placed in a meaningful context, educational visits and outdoor camps are organized as an important part of the programme. Extra-curricular activities provide an opportunity for students to engage in learning skills and developing talents outside the curriculum. Currently activities include instrumental instruction, stop motion animation, soccer, yoga, karate, choir, graphic novel design and cross country running.

SECONDARY EDUCATION AT OWIS

With a commitment to provide students with continuity into Secondary School we will be extending into Grade 9 and the IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) programme in August 2016.

We are very proud of our Secondary School, of its curriculum, extra curricular activities and pastoral support. We believe at OWIS, students come first. They are the centre of everything we do and our purpose is to develop them into young adults ready to make the next step in their lives. We aim to provide them with the skills, confidence, attributes and qualifications to become high achieving, internationally minded, well-rounded individuals.

As a growing International School we have been able to retain the elements that have made us a unique, exciting and stimulating place to learn and work. We are determined to maintain the ethos as the school grows, ensure the students achieve at the highest levels and continue to offer the highest quality of learning experiences, enrichment activities and pastoral support.

Whilst continuing with an inquiry approach to learning, our students follow the UK National Curriculum accredited by Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), adapted for One World International School. Subjects studied include English, Mathematics, Science, Mandarin, Humanities, Physical Education, Art, Music, Drama, Information Literacy and Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE). We offer a 1:1 MacBook programme in Secondary School to support and facilitate learning.

In the Secondary School we have a number of weekly clubs and activities, which encourage students to either try a new activity/interest or enhance existing skills the students already have. These clubs include a variety of sporting and curriculum based clubs with participation encouraged by awarding participation certificates and merits. Merits are also given for good work, good behaviour etc. and are part of the student centred rewards policy of the school. Pastoral care is such an important part of the school and at OWIS we make sure that every student is seen as an individual and not merely a number.

With each class having a form tutor (a dedicated teacher) who is responsible for solving any issues, which might arise throughout the year. Students are placed into Houses with House Captains being elected from our older students. We also encourage student participation in other school initiatives such as the Student Council where the students work as a team to support the school in improving the opportunities and experiences for all students in the school. Giving students a role with the running of the school or positions of authority is important as this gives the students a sense of ownership of their own learning.

At One World International School (OWIS), the Mandarin programme is a coherent, clearly articulated curriculum for all students from EC1 to Grade 8.

The curriculum has been developed and designed to incorporate the attainment targets in essential knowledge, key skills, breadth of learning and curriculum progression in Mandarin learning and follow three strands:

Page 9: OWIS Prospective Parent Pack

Youth Chinese TestOur curriculum ensures that students develop, oral, reading and writing skills essential to achieve performance standards consistent with the Youth Chinese Test (YCT). Hanban launched the YCT test in an effort to encourage foreign young students to learn Mandarin and improve their language proficiency.

The YCT is an international standardized test of Chinese language proficiency. It assesses young foreign students’ abilities to use Chinese in their daily and academic lives. The writing test is divided into four levels:

• Students who pass the YCT (Level I) can understand and use some of the most common Chinese phrases and sentences and possess the ability to further their Chinese language studies.

• Students who pass the YCT (Level II) can understand and use some simple Chinese phrases and sentences and cope with basic level communications.

• Students who pass the YCT (Level III), having reached an excellent level in basic Chinese, can communicate on familiar daily topics in a simple manner.

• Students who pass the YCT (Level IV) can communicate in Chinese at a basic level in their daily, academic and professional lives. When travelling in China, they can manage most forms of communication in Chinese.

ENHANCING SKILLS T H R O U G H

ARTSPerforming Arts | Drama

At One World International School (OWIS), the focus of the drama programme is to develop problem solving and decision-making skills among students. The study of drama teaches the use of specific theatrical approaches and conventions in a structured way for effective exploration of ideas, texts, issues and themes.

Students work on developing their skills and techniques both verbally and non-verbally, making room for a sense of creativity. Students practice and build upon various communication skills through the use of body language, facial expressions and voice modulation.

The curriculum is designed to improve performance skills and techniques. They employ various techniques in a practical situation and learn to work on relevant projects, which improves the standard of presentation. The effectiveness of a range of dramatic techniques and conventions is developed, adapted and evaluated.

OWIS also offers drama enrichment activities. Students can take part in drama clubs, workshops, school productions and experience trips to the theatre.

Visual ArtsThe study of Visual Arts encourages creative thinking, problem solving, perseverance and an understanding of various processes. It teaches students various techniques and provides them with relevant materials, which helps them create a range of innovative and exciting outcomes in a variety of disciplines.

Children from Early Childhood through to Middle School explore the key elements of line, colour, tone, shape, form, pattern, and texture, which support all areas of art and design. We aim to give students the opportunity to acquire a broad range of techniques and skills, exploring different materials, in both 2D and 3D.

We deliver a comprehensive Arts curriculum, developed by combining the subject areas of Art and Design Technology. We combine the study of technique with the work of artists who typify that technique, for example while learning about colour and line students study the work of Piet Mondrian, and also look at the work of M.C. Escher while learning about pattern and shape. Students have a number of opportunities to visit art galleries and exhibitions, where they develop an appreciation for art and different artists throughout history.

Primary SchoolIn Primary School, the music curriculum takes an inquiry-based approach that allows students to have a sound understanding of various elements by applying concepts in a practical context and to discover links between music and other aspects of life.

Concepts of pitch, rhythm, dynamics, timbre, notation and purpose are taught through performing and composing music with a wide variety of stimuli, including classical music, pop music and folk music from around the world.

Music beyond the Classroom

In addition to the weekly curriculum lessons, students have numerous opportunities to participate in music outside of the classroom. Students aged 6 years and above who wish to learn a musical instrument may sign up for additional one-to-one tuition with specialist tutors from Cristofori Music and Partners in Brass within school hours. This gives students an opportunity to learn piano, violin, guitar, singing, recorder, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and euphonium.

B U I L D I N G CONFIDENCE WITH

MUSIC

One World International SchoolCPE Registration No: 200800495N Period of Registration: 25 Feb 2015 - 25 Feb 2016

At OWIS, we encourage students to explore all aspects of music and gain a greater understanding of the art. All students have 80 minutes of music lessons per week conducted by a specialist teacher. Students may also get involved in a number of other extra-curricular activities to guide them on their musical journey. In learning and practising music, students gain valuable self-confidence and discover new ways to express themselves.

Middle SchoolIn the Middle School, students are encouraged to seek a greater understanding of the function and purpose of music within a variety of cultures and contexts, while furthering their own abilities within the realm of performance and composition. Through a process of guided learning, students explore a number of approaches to music. By the end of Grade 8, students have the experience and knowledge to begin studying IGCSE, in which theoretical knowledge is expanded and applied in the contexts of listening, composition, and performance.
