Overview Beginning at the Beginning. What a great beginning it is! We are going to spend quite a bit of time on the first few chapters of the Bible in this series, they cover some pretty fundamental concepts, so it’s worth spending the time to try and get these foundation stones concreted in right. We don’t however want to end up being dry and boring; we want to inspire the children with the greatness of God, the wonder of creation, His amazing love for us, and His desire to bring all things back to where they belong and make a more glorious new creation that we will enjoy with Him forever. Whatagreatbeginningitis!WearegoingtospendquiteabitoftimeonthefirstfewchaptersoftheBibleinthisseries,theycoversomeprettyfundamentalconcepts,soit’sworthspendingthetimetotryandgetthesefoundationstonesconcretedinright.Wedon’thoweverwanttoendupbeingdryandboring;wewanttoinspirethechildrenwiththegreatnessofGod,thewonderofcreation,Hisamazingloveforus,andHisdesiretobringallthingsbacktowheretheybelongandmakeamoregloriousnewcreationthatwewillenjoywithHimforever.

Aim

FortheChildrentounderstandthatGodiseternal,HemadeeverythingbySpeakinganditwasallgood!God’swordispowerful,lifegivingandgood.

Wherearewegoing?

Wewanttoestablishimportantfoundationsthatwewillbuildon–God’sgreatness,ruleandgoodness.HerulesallthingsbecauseHemadeallthings,Hisiswordbringslifeandgoodnesssoitcanbetrusted.Godiseternal,aboveandoutsideallthatHemade,soHeknowsthebeginningfromtheend,wecanbeconfidentthatHeisincontrol.Godisgood–onlygoodthingscomefromHim.

Genesis1iswrittenwithpowerfulpictorialandpoeticlanguage,itislikeanartiststretchingwideablankcanvas,andthenfillingitwithbeautyandwonderbeforeoureyes.MajortheologicalfoundationalstonesareputinplaceforusthattherestoftheBiblestorybuildson.God’seternalnature,andcharacterisestablishedinv1,theonewhoalltherestofthisbookisaboutisnotintroducedHeisjustthere,“Inthebeginning,God”.HistriunenatureisanotherfoundationstonesetaswearetoldofthepresenceofHisspirit,v2,andthenthepresenceandpowerofhisword,v3,sointhefirst3verses,wehavethetrinity–father,sonandspirit,asJohnthegospelwriterexplainstous,John1:1-4,14“thewordwaswithGod,andthewordwasGod…ThewordbecamefleshandmadeHisdwellingamongus.”JesusisthewordofGod–hewasthereinthebeginning–heputskinontocomeandbethefullexpressionofwhoGodisinhislifeonearth,deathandresurrection.

SowegettoknowwhoGodis,thenwearetoldwhatGodislike,Hisgoodness,ruleandpoweraredemonstratedintherestofthechapter.Weseethepowerandbeautyofhiswordthatmakesallthings,“andGodsaid…anditwasso”isrepeated.WearealsorepeatedlytoldthatallthatHemadeisgood,thedetail,varietyandwonderofcreationreflectsthepower,majestyandcreativityoftheonethatmadeit.Theseversessparkmuchcontroversyanddebate,evenamongstChristians,howevertheimportantissuethatitaddressesisnothowGodmadetheworld,butwhoGodis,andwhyhemadeallthings.Godiseternal,andgoodandmadeallthingsbyhislifegivingword,forHisglory;thesearethefundamentalprincipleswewanttosetinconcreteintheheartsandmindsofourchildren.

Forthechildrentofullyunderstandthatsinisnotjusteatingthewrongapple,todothistheyneedtohaveafirmgraspofthelessonswehavetriedtoteachoverthelastfewweeks.OnlywhenweunderstandthegoodnessofGod’sword,demonstratedthroughcreation,theuniquenessofourrelationshipwithHim,madetobelongtoGodandthegoodnessofHisrulethatallowsusfreedomunderHiscaredoestheexchangeofHistruthforaSnake’slie,Hisrule,forourownreallystink.

Therearemanyquestionsthatweaskwhenlookingatthis,andthatthechildrenmayask,don’tfudge,remindthemoftheprinciplethatifitseemstouslikeGodhasgotitwrong,weknowthatthatcan’tbetruesothereissomethingthatwehaven’tunderstood,weneedtothink,talk,prayandreadon.TheonethingwecanknowforsureisthatGodisgoodandhiswordistrue.
