The academic content covered in the Doctoral SummerSchool is fundamental to all areas of research ineducation, humanities, social and behavioural sciences.The goal is to support and strengthen the capacities ofdoctoral candidates in the College of Humnaities tocomplete their doctoral studies within the minimumrequired enrollment timeframe at UKZN.
The Doctoral Summer School is FREE for all doctoralstudents in the College of Humanities. Acceptedpartiipants are responsible for their own travel andaccommodation arrangements and costs.
The Humanities Doctoral Summer School is a researchsupport and development initiative aimed at providingacademic support to doctoral candidates that are at theadvanced stages (data analysis and write-up) to completeand submit their thesis in 2020. In addition to hands-onacademic writing, data analysis and interpretation training,doctoral candidates will receive individualised academicsupport and mentorship during the five day summer school.
- Academic writing, citation and referencing - Review of related literature (including the social
welfare history of the research problem)- Policies and legislative frameworks- The use of theory in doctoral research - Research paradigms, ontologies and
epistemologies- Qualitative and quantitative data analysis - Qualitative data verification and trustworthiness- Assessing reliability and validity in quantitative
research- Research integrity and ethical considerations- Limitations of the study- Discussion and interpretation of the
findings/results- Writing the conclusion chapter
