Background
• Ghana’s healthcare industry is typified by the
public sector under control of the Ministry of
Health (MOH) and its umbrella organisation, the
Ghana Health Service (GHS) and a private sector
that serves approximately 40.0 percent of all
healthcare needs.
• Following a typical pyramidal structure, Ghana’s
healthcare services are provided through
tertiary, secondary, and primary institutions.
• Teaching hospitals operate in an autonomous
manner however the GHS oversees the operation
of the secondary- and primary level hospitals.
The GHS was established to improve and align
the quality of healthcare services and increase
accessibility of healthcare services to the
population.
• In order to reach this goal, government has
various programmes in place to improve and
expand current infrastructure, and develop skill
that poses opportunities for pharmaceutical- and
medical devices manufacturers.
