Detailed Hosting Capacity Analysis – What We Found

No two feeders are alike – feeder clustering not sufficient

Locations within each feeder vary considerably. Difficult to consider all possible locations.

Detailed analysis not easily replicable across large number of feeders

Running load flow on all possible scenarios not feasible across large numbers of

feeders when considering all locations (3P and 1P), various load levels, feeder

reconfigurations, DER types, etc

EPRI’s  Streamlined  Hosting  Capacity Method – What is it? Works within existing planning tools

(CYME, Synergi, Milsoft, PowerFactory, OpenDSS)

Developed from years of detailed hosting capacity analysis

Considers DER size and location– Small distributed and large

centralized DER

Considers DER technology and impacts– PV, wind, storage, etc– Voltage, thermal, protection

Hosting Capacity MethodsVariations, Validation, Application, and Evolution No two methods are the same

– Detailed methods vary (SCE, SDG&E, EPRI, PEPCO, ComEd are different)

– Streamlined methods vary (PG&E, EPRI, etc. are different)

Regardless of approach, similar if not same results can be realized

Validation/benchmarking is a critical component– Allows for understanding of capabilities

and limitations of any methodology– Impacts method application (planning,

screening, input to LNBA, etc.)

Hosting capacity methods will evolve over time, for example,– EPRI’s  initial  technique  generally

resulted in conservative results (2014)– Through implementation, testing, and

validation,  EPRI’s  method  now  yields  very similar results to detailed (benchmarked with SCE detailed methodology and others)

Accuracy

Where is streamlined? – Depends upon how the method is implemented

Summary

Different methods can yield similar results– Validation/benchmarking is critical– Hosting capacity methods evolve

over time EPRI’s  streamlined  approach  was

developed from detailed analysis and has seen considerable refinements over the past 2 years

EPRI has been working with utility partners to use the streamlined method to– Assist in screening process– Perform system-wide planning– Cost-benefit analysis– Analyze reconfiguration impacts– Work within their existing planning

tools– Identify smart inverter

applications/uses
