Emotional Intelligence: What Is It & Why It’s Important?
Daniel Goleman first coined term (1995). Most successful leaders have high EI:
Self-awareness Social awareness Self-management Social skills
IQ & technical skills do matter, but they are “threshold capabilities” or entry level requirements.
“Without it [EI], a person can have the best training in the world, an incisive, analytical mind, and endless supply of smart ideas, but he still won’t make a great leader.” Daniel Goleman

Demonstrating EI In an Interview
Can you:
Offer examples and stories that demonstrate team work and collaboration in former roles, including how you resolved conflict?
Provide examples of how you built and strengthened relationships internally and/or externally (E.g. bosses, peers, team members, direct reports, customers, vendors, partners etc)?
Share examples of working successfully with culturally diverse colleagues to demonstrate openness to ideas and people who are different to you?
- 34% of employers are placing greater emphasis on hiring and promoting people with emotional intelligence post-recession. - 61% of employers are more likely to promote workers with high emotional intelligence over candidates with high IQ. Source: CareerBuilder Survey - August 2011.

MANAGING YOUR CAREER
Final Thoughts

What AJO Is Seeing
Recommended Response
Growth in short-term contracts/temporary assignments.
Don’t ignore short-term contracts as these may lead to full-time opportunities.
Strong competition from employed as well as unemployed, made easier by LinkedIn.
More than sending a good resume to published job openings and waiting to be called for an interview. ”If it ever was just that, it sure isn't now.” Be proactive: get out there and use networking to uncover opportunities; follow up; build relationships; shake the bushes; have multiple things going on.
One in four has been through transition before.
Never neglect your network. Develop a strong, effective and proactive network – offline and online. Continuously share updates; be seen as a contributor in your field. Use social media (SM) as a tool for networking, pick up the phone, meet others for coffee, etc. If you don't know the proactive resources of SM, connect with someone who does and learn
If you’re in transition

If you’re employed
Broaden expertise
Consider lateral moves that will broaden experience and skills. Learn about career paths others have followed.
Develop your network. Be visible.
Network within your organization. Learn about other functions and roles and career paths. Network externally; develop curiosity and be open to cultures and ideas that are different.
Develop knowledge & skills
Volunteer for special projects, assignments, committees, boards, nonprofits & other opportunities that broaden your horizons. Learn continuously!
Develop 2020 leadership competencies
Technical knowledge & skills are necessary but unlikely to be sufficient. Seek feedback and look for mentoring or coaching opportunities.
