What is Knowledge Transfer?
Overview and feedback from the Public Health England Knowledge Translation programme
Knowledge transfer – long definition
‘the exchange, synthesis, and ethically-sound application of knowledge – with a complex system of interactions among researchers and users – to accelerate the capture of the benefits of research for [the people we serve] through improved health, more effective services and products, and strengthened healthcare system.’
Canadian Institute for Health Research

Knowledge transfer -short definition
Evidence into policy/practice; policy/practice into evidence
7
Evidence Policybridging the ‘know-do’
gap
Overview and feedback from the Public Health England Knowledge Translation programme
Reasons for the know-do gap in health intelligence
• Don’t know - that the information exists
• Don’t understand – the information is too scientific and it is difficult to decipher what it means and why it is important
• Don’t care – see the information as irrelevant, not beneficial to their agenda, or not in a format that they can readily act on
• Don’t agree – think the information is misguided or false.
