Although it is not making the news headlines asmuch as earlier this year, the Zika viruscontinues to spread, and additional countriessuch as Belize and Saint Lucia have reportedcases of the mosquito-borne Zika virustransmission. Based on a growing body ofresearch, there is scientific consensus that thevirus is a cause of microcephaly and theGuillain-Barré syndrome. On the 1st of February,the WHO declared the outbreak as a publichealth emergency of international concern, andthe EU activated its early warning and responsesystem for medical emergencies.

On March, 3rd 2016, Médecins du Monde inviteda variety of stakeholders to Paris to discuss theresults of studies on unwanted pregnancies andunsafe abortions and their implications. Frenchand African anthropologists, civil societyrepresentatives and policymakers, together withMédecins du Monde’s project implementersengaged in debates, shared findings andexperiences. In particular, the need to betterintegrate and tackle the youth needs wassingled out. Improving the training of medicalstaffs and strengthening quality in SRH servicesalso appears essential, along with theimperative of dismantling restrictive legalframeworks hindering women and girls’ accessto sexual education, contraception and safeabortion.
