Sandy Bridge “Ring Bus” Optimizes Platform Data Movement
Ring bus architecture delivers an efficient bi-directional highway for data movement
Compared to Xeon 5500/5600:– Lower L3 cache latency (~20%)– Higher bandwidth between cores, L3, Memory & I/O– Up to 8x more L3 to core bandwidth
Dynamically shared LLC– Each core has 2.5MB / core “slice of LLC– Can be dynamically resized on demand– Disabling a core in UEFI does not disalbe that cores

IBM System x3750 M4 – Memory
Memory drives performance: Customers continue to look for ways to increase the return on their IT investments while driving increased system performance. Workloads such as virtualization and database require the highest amount of memory possible for optimal performance The x3750 M4 provides 25% more memory performance at a maximum configuration*
RDIMM: Best balance of price, capacity, reliability, and workload performance. Available in 4GB, 8GB and 16GB.
LRDIMM: Highest performance for workloads needing maximum memory. Available in 16GB and 32GB.
Increasing memory in most applications can increase performance Using fewer larger capacity DIMMs is less expensive and can cut power cost Large DIMM capacities leave room to grow – right size now, expand later
Up to 48 DIMM and 1.5TB of memory capacity
* Up to 1333 MHz DIMM with 3 DIMM per channel (48 DIMM). The industry standard is 1066 MHz DIMM at max configuration

Power and Thermal Design
Better Power and Thermal design - As data centers grow, power and cooling costs are becoming a larger piece of the IT budget. According to EPA's report to Congress, data centers will account for nearly 3% of total US electricity consumption in 2011. IBM has always been focused on help clients reduce their energy consumption through greater efficiency and innovation.
Choice of 2 Redundant Power supplies that are 80PLUS platinum power (94%) efficiency design
(1) Source: US Environmental Protection Agency – Energy Star Website
Free air cooling support:– X3750 M4 processors models support 5o-40oC– Allow customers to save on cooling costs
Zone Cooling: Six independent FAN modules support 5 Thermal Zones. Each zone will adjust fan speed based on the components and thermal conditions in that zone. This provides optimal temperature within the server without wasting energy
Zone 5
N+N Fan Design: These hot-swap, dual-motor cooling fans help maintain a healthy system temperature by keeping internal components cool. These fans are also low wattage keeping energy costs low and have reduced noise levels

IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric ManagerHow it can simplify network management
Updated June 12, 2010
An integrated server I/O portfolio providing a comprehensive set of interconnects and smart management tools to help you run
your business
Supported across virtually all chassis, blades, and switches
What is IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager?
A software utility in the Advanced Management Module (AMM) that assigns and manages MAC and
WWN addresses for blade deployment and re-deployment for
up to 100 chassis. Optional advanced functions I/O address assignment plus policy based
automation including blade failover pools and triggers event action
plans, and I/O parameter and VLAN migration in case of failover
Blade Deployment– LAN and SAN administrators don’t need to
wait for the hardware to arrive in order to determine the MAC and WWNs to use to configure their networks and storage
– MAC address based IP address assignments can be done ahead of time
– SAN zoning can be done ahead of time– Storage LUN masking can be configured
ahead of time – Storage is assigned to blades based on BOFM WWNs
Blade Replacement– No need to reconfigure LAN/SAN resources
when a blade is replaced – SAN zoning and LUN masking is un-affected
– Replacement blades in the same slots retain the BOFM supplied MAC and WWN addresses
Automated Blade failover– No need to reconfigure LAN/SAN resources in
order to support automated blade failover– BOFM Advanced Upgrade automatically
moves the BOFM supplied MAC and WWN addresses from the failed blade to the spare blade so that all LAN/SAN resources and visible to the spare blade immediately
– Optional VLAN configuration on blade ethernet switch modules is also automatically updated so that the spare blade can access the same VLANs as the failed blade

What is Predictive Failure Analysis (PFA)?–Component analysis logic that can predict
an impending failure based on data from the component
–Typically notification is within 24 to 48 hours of a potential failure
Benefits–Less unscheduled downtime–Better overall availability of the servers–Components can be replaced under
warranty prior to a failure
Component
Note: PFA capability shown is typical, and varies by vendor and server model

IBM Light Path DiagnosticsEnabling rapid fault isolation that lowers mean time to repair
Front of Light Path Diagnostics PanelAmber light indicates there is a problem with the server
Pop-Out Light Path Diagnostics PanelIndicates what subsystem has problem
Light Path Diagnostics Component Level LightsIndicates what individual component has PFA alert or has failed
Note: The Light Path Diagnostics implementation will vary based on system type

IBM Calibrated Vectored CoolingProvides more efficient cooling for greater density and more internal components
Updated June 12, 2010
Bezel Design
What is Calibrated Vectored Cooling?– Innovative thermal design that optimizes air intake, fan placement and zone
cooling technologies to maximize the air flow inside the server for optimal cooling efficiency
Benefits– More function in a smaller design– Allows greater internal scalability as heat dissipates more efficiently– Components run at cooler operating temperatures, resulting in improved
reliability
Technologies– Integrated, holistic server design (i.e. planar and mechanical designed together)– Advanced thermal testing and design (i.e. airflow modeling and optimization)– Isolated zone cooling– Fan technologies (i.e. counter rotating fans, variable speed fans)– Vapor chamber heat sinks

IBM Systems Management FrameworkThe integration of systems management innovation
Updated June 12, 2010
Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI)• Single consistent system level code stack with advance setup and configuration• Next-gen replacement for BIOS-based firmware provides richer management experience• Removes limit on number of adapter cards—important to virtualized environments
IBM ToolsCenter• Reduces complexity of choosing, finding, and learning management tools via single
website• Ability to create bootable media (CD, DVD or USB) w/updates customized for clients’
systems• Common look and feel across tool set reduces training
Integrated Management Module (IMM)• Remote control to manage, monitor, and troubleshoot from any corner of the world• Standards-based alerting to enable “out-of-the-box” integration into enterprise management
environments
IBM Systems Director• Easy-to-use, powerful tools for managing both physical and virtual resources• Delivers broad cross-platform support including IBM Power Systems, System z, storage
and non-IBM x86 servers• Use of a shared, common agent with Tivoli provides simpler integration of Systems
