‘As pigments are but the vehicle of painting, so is building but the vehicle of architecture, which is the thought behind

form, embodied and realised for the purpose of its manifestation and transmission.’

- W.R.Lethaby

Architecture is all too often seen as an isolated, elitist art-form that often values style over content.

ArtsArchi tecture places architecture within a continuum of heritage, including visual and performing arts. We seek to

create buildings and spaces in which the arts can fl ourish, complementing the art-forms they house.

What We Think

Listening is at the core of our approach. We come to every project with an open

mind and believe that good design arises from a thorough understanding of the

needs and aspirations of the user client. Our job is to help them to visualise

their needs and express their ideas, and to give them concrete form through a

careful balance of innovation and practicality.

That is why we like to be involved in projects from the early stages, helping

develop the brief and preparing options studies before developing appropriate

aesthetic solutions.

As well as designing new buildings and spaces, we are particularly experienced

in working with existing structures, many of them listed or in historic settings. We

believe in design that responds to and complements the existing environment

whilst avoiding self-conscious pastiche. We adopt a pragmatic approach in

resolving potential confl icts in achieving access and DDA compliance in historic

buildings.

We are also committed to design for sustainability and encourage clients to

incorporate sustainable energy principles in the design of their buildings where

possible.

Our passion for heritage and cultural arts, together with a deep commitment

to the fulfi lment of our clients’ individual needs in the creation of their built

environment, lie at the heart of the ArtsArchitecture ethos.

The National Museum

Situated on a prestige site in the centre of Old Muscat, this

National Museum sets out to showcase the cultural heritage

of Oman from prehistoric times to the present day. The

ceremonial entrance faces down a new boulevard to the Al

Alam Palace.

The main public entrance faces a ceremonial square and is

fl anked by arched arcades. A double-height reception hall

leads on to a central courtyard, ‘The Land and the People’

- an air-conditioned triple-height space around which the

galleries are arrayed. The courtyard celebrates the many

regional variations of indigenous Omani architecture. The

surrounding permanent galleries are arranged on two levels.

The ground fl oor galleries include Arms and Armour, explaining

Oman’s military past, Maritime History, showcasing Oman’s

trading heritage, and Civilisation In The Making, highlighting

the architecture of forts and domestic buildings together with

the afl aj irrigation systems.

An Archaeological Timeline - a helical stair giving an overview

of 10,000 years of Omani prehistory and history, surrounding

a circular glass lift - brings people up to the fi rst fl oor galleries,

beginning with the prehistoric tombs of Bat and Al-Khatam,

the Land of Frankincense, Prehistoric Civilisations, The

Splendours of Islam, and Oman and The World (the stories of

its relations with the West, Africa and the Indian Subcontinent).

The story culminates with the Al Bu Said Dynasty and the

creation of modern Oman (‘The Renaissance’).

Further galleries are devoted to fi ne art, including works by

contemporary Omani artists, an ‘Intangible Heritage’ Gallery

devoted to music and oral history, and the Collections Gallery,

a large open storage area with facilities for collection study.

The principal objective is the creation of a new home and study

centre for the Sultan of Brunei’s collection of Qur’ans and

Islamic manuscripts. The Exhibition Gallery will display and

interpret the collection in a series of nine galleries, each taking

the teachings of the Qur’an as a starting point. The collections

also include fossils and minerals, astronomical and scientifi c

instruments, ceremonial walking sticks and prayer beads.

Galleries include ‘The Wisdom of the Mukmin King’(an

introduction based around the present Sultan’s vision for the

country’s Islamic development), ‘The Holy Qur’an’, ‘Al-Anbiyah’

(the story of the Prophets), ‘The Companions and Followers’

(The companions of the Prophet, the Caliphates and the

Imams), ‘Knowledge Heritage’ (the story of Islamic scholarship

and Sufi sm), ‘Al-Haramain’ (The holy sites of Mecca and

Medina and the Haj), ‘The Greatness of God’ (creation of the

universe, geological evolution and natural history), ‘Unveiling

the Mysteries’ (Islamic astronomy, exploration, surveying and

time-keeping) and ‘Islamic Architecture, Art and Design’.

The display will include a range of interpretive elements such

as touch tables, multi-screen and immersive projections,

sound cones and touch screen interactives to complement

and enhance understanding of the collection. We collaborated

closely with JJA’s Museology consultants in evolving an

interpretive narrative and gallery planning concept.

We have designed a new visitor centre for Hawes in North

Yorkshire working with exhibition designers JJA. The Centre

contains a permanent educational exhibition focussing on the

local sheep farming industry, as well as craft-related retail units

and managed workspaces, temporary exhibition space, and a

100-cover refectory coupled with a multi-purpose community

space. The community space can be used separately for fi lm

shows, talks and exhibitions, or opened up with the refectory

to provide a large space for private functions.

The development has been designed to appear as a series

of individual buildings rather than one large mass, to reduce

the overall visual impact in what is otherwise a domestic-scale

environment. The refectory block draws on Cistercian Abbeys,

with an octagonal form, buttresses and pyramidal roof.

By contrast, the block containing managed workspace

and lettable commercial units has taken the local domestic

vernacular as its cue, using pitched roofs, gables and dressed

stone window and door openings. Two other blocks, a large

one containing the exhibition area and retail units and a

smaller one containing the Community Hall, are steel-framed

structures with fl at roofs behind massive Yorkstone walls.

The development will include sustainability features including

wool Insulation, dry urinals, grey water recycling, solar water

and biomass heating, and a sedum roof.

ArtsArchitecture and JJA have developed a brief and concept

plan for a new permanent headquarters for the Golden Web

Foundation, a worldwide cultural resource and academic

research facility for Islamic art and architecture.

The headquarters building will house a museum and permanent

exhibition showcasing art and architectural development in the

Islamic world, divided into twelve regions, each with their own

gallery and courtyard garden, disposed around a central space

dedicated to the common themes of geometry and pattern.

In addition to the Museum, there will be a 100-room

postgraduate college, a 40-room guest house, a Learning

Centre including a reference library, online study suite and

exhibition area, a 400-seat Auditorium, seminar rooms, cafe,

restaurant, craft souq, Foundation offi ces and a mosque. A

ArtsArchitecture and JJA developed a concept design for a

new memorial museum to the late Sheikh Zayed of Abu Dhabi,

founder of the United Arab Emirates, for a design comptition

run by UNESCO.

The design is an iconic form representing a ‘paradise garden’

or oasis contained between two gently curving walls forming

a raised plinth. The visitor ascends a great fl ight of steps

to the raised level and enters through a formal gate to the

courtyard beyond. Here they fi nd an infi nity pool fl anked by

palm trees, with a golden pavilion in the centre reached by

an elegant bridge.

At the other end of the pool stands the Library, with a tensile

roof inspired by the Bedouin tent. The pavilion gives access

vis escalator and lift to the exhibition galleries that lie partly

underground beneath the pool.

The galleries contain an exhibition celebrating the Sheikh’s

life, a modern art gallery and displays about Abu Dhabi and

the other Emirates, and culminate in a grand staircase that

carries the visitor up again into the Library building.

At the centre of the Library is, a four-storey symbolic ‘casket’

containing the Sheikh Zayed Archive itself. A public reading

room, restaurant and shop are disposed around this core, with

views out to the gardens. In addition, there are a number of

lecture halls and seminar rooms, prayer rooms, curatorial and

collection storage facilities within the plinth.

In 2008-9, ArtsArchitecture worked in collaboration with Theatre

Projects Consultants to produce the outline design and theatre

planning for a new 1800-seat show theatre for the Galaxy

Casino development in Macau, China. ArtsArchitecture’s role

was to develop the front of house and backstage planning

within an envelope prescribed by the overall master-planning

architect, Simon Kwan Associates.

The theatre has been designed to accommodate both regular

entertainment shows for the casino customers as well as

occasional award ceremonies, and the need to accommodate

various levels of VIP guests was an important factor in planning

the circulation and auditorium.

Our foyer concept expresses the outer wall of the auditorium

and envelops it in a 3-storey colonnade overlooking a grand

entrance atrium space containing the vertical circulation to

the upper tiers. The side walls of the auditorium continue out

as punctured screens, behind which are positioned a series

of refreshment spaces. A large skylight window set against

the curved auditorium wall allows daylight to fl ood down into

the atrium space.

Backstage and administrative accommodation has also been

comprehensively planned and a fi re strategy including detailed

calculation of means of escape incorporated into the overall

planning of the casino complex.

In 2006 ArtsArchitecture prepared a Concept Design for a

National Theatre, as part of the 20,000m2 Cultural Plaza

development at Seeb, on the outskirts of Muscat, capital of

The main auditorium seats up to 550 in two tiers and is oriented

toward drama, spoken word and smaller musical productions.

It features an adjustable proscenium 10-14m wide opening

onto a 15m x 25m stage with a 40-bar fl y tower, a forestage

elevator capable of forming an orchestra pit for up to 35

musicians and a full stage basement.

Alongside the main theatre there is a fl exible 180-seat studio/

rehearsal room, generous public foyers and VIP/corporate

entertainment spaces. Backstage there are permanent

dressing spaces for up to 50, together with an artists’ lounge,

technical support, scenery and costume storage. Adjacent is a

public restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating areas,

together with prayer rooms serving the whole complex.

The design is based on a simple geometry of the circle within

the square. The circular drum of the auditorium is expressed

within a surrounding double-height foyer space, in turn

enclosed with a two-storey colonnade, alluding to a traditional

internal courtyard space. The auditorium is clad in blue glass

panels, forming a striking contrast with the polished plaster

of the adjacent foyer. The refreshment and circulation areas

Athens Onassis Theatre

In 2007 we acted as sub-consultants to Burrell Foley Fischer for the development

of interior planning of a new performing arts complex in Athens for the Onassis

Foundation. Our work primarily entailed auditorium planning studies for the Studio

Theatre, for which a fl exible space was required, capable of housing drama, smale

scale dance and chamber recitals as well as fi lm shows.

Royal Engineers’ Museum, Gillingham

The Royal Engineers’ Museum and Library are housed in

historic buildings within the grounds of the Royal School of

Military Engineering in Kent. Whilst the museum is open to the

public, the library is currrently housed in unsuitable premises

and the unique collection of books, maps and documents are

stored in poor environmental conditions and are not easily

accessible.

We have helped to prepare a bid for Heritage Lottery funding

to consolidate the Museum and Library collections within the

same building, with new stores and reading rooms for the

library and archives, together with redisplays of the First and

Second World War galleries. Our work included making a 3D

computer ‘fl y-through’ of the scheme.

Thackray Museum, Leeds

The Thackray Museum is the largest medical museum in the

UK and contains a unique collection of artefacts associated

with surgery and medicine. It is housed in a grand Victorian

building that began life as the Leeds Union Workhouse.

In 2003-4 David Wright carried out a Development Study

for the museum whilst with RHWL LLP. The study included

a new Education Centre to cater for the large number of

school parties using the Museum. Proposals were also made

for additional artefact storage, including a new large object

store, open access and research facilities and curatorial

accommodation. After forming ArtsArchitecture, David was

retained as architectural consultant for the project.

David Wright was the Design Team Leader for the

redevelopment of Brighton’s Grade 1 Listed Dome and Corn

Exchange. Originally built in 1804 as a stable block and

riding house for the adjacent Royal Pavilion, these buildings

are of national signifi cance. The Dome was converted into a

concert hall in 1867 whilst the riding house became a fl at fl oor

exhibition hall and one-time roller skating rink.

Major alterations were carried out to the Dome in the 1930s

(Robert Atkinson, architect) resulting in an Art Deco interior

added to the Indian Regency shell.

The 2002 refurbishment included transformation of the 1800-

seat auditorium, yielding vastly-improved sightlines, a much-

enlarged stage area, and the introduction of mobile elements

that allow the space to be used as concert hall, lyric theatre

and fl at fl oor pop venue as required. Completely new technical

systems, seating and interior fi nishes were installed.Photos: Martin Charles
